Forward photoproduction of $π^+π^-$ pairs with invariant mass of the order of $m_ρ\sim 770$ MeV is traditionally understood to be produced via Pomeron exchange. Based on a detailed analysis of the CLAS photoproduction data, it is shown that the dynamics of two-pion photoproduction for $|t|\gtrsim 0.5$ GeV$^2$ cannot be explained by Pomeron exchange alone. This motivates the development of a new theoretical model of two-pion photoproduction which incorporates both two-pion and pion-nucleon resonant contributions. After fitting free parameters, the model provides an excellent description of the low moments of the angular distribution measured at CLAS, and enables an assessment of the relative contributions of particular production mechanisms and an interpretation of the various features of the data in terms of these mechanisms.

Inclusive production processes will be important for the first observations of $XYZ$ states at new generation electron-hadron colliders, as they generally benefit from larger cross sections than their exclusive counterparts. We make predictions of semi-inclusive photoproduction of the $χ_{c1}(1P)$ and $X(3872)$, whose peripheral production is assumed to be dominated by vector exchanges. We validate the applicability of Vector Meson Dominance in the axial-vector charmonium sector and calculate production rates at center-of-mass energies relevant for future experimental facilities. We find the semi-inclusive cross sections near threshold to be enhanced by a factor of $\sim 2-3$ compared to the exclusive reaction and well suited for a first observation in photoproduction.

Abstract:
A theoretical model of two-pion photoproduction is presented. The model encodes the prominent $ρ(770)$ resonance and the expected leading background contribution coming from the Deck mechanism. To validate the model, angular moments are computed and compared with the CLAS dataset. After fitting a number of free parameters, the model provides a good description of the data.

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

The study of $J/ψ$ photoproduction at low energies has consequences for the understanding of multiple aspects of nonperturbative QCD, ranging from mechanical properties of the proton, to the binding inside nuclei, and the existence of hidden-charm pentaquarks. Factorization of the photon-$c \bar c$ and nucleon dynamics or Vector Meson Dominance are often invoked to justify these studies. Alternatively, open charm intermediate states have been proposed as the dominant mechanism underlying $J/ψ$ photoproduction. As the latter violates this factorization, it is important to estimate the relevance of such contributions. We analyse the latest differential and integrated photoproduction cross sections from the GlueX and $J/ψ$-007 experiments. We show that the data can be adequately described by a small number of partial waves, which we parameterize with generic models enforcing low-energy unitarity. The results suggest a nonnegligible contribution from open charm intermediate states. Furthermore, most of the models present an elastic scattering length incompatible with previous extractions based on Vector Meson Dominance, and thus call into question its applicability to heavy mesons. Our results indicate a wide array of physics possibilities that are compatible with present data and need to be disentangled.

We study the decay $J/ψ\toπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ within the framework of the Khuri-Treiman equations. We find that the BESIII experimental di-pion mass distribution in the $ρ(770)$-region is well reproduced with a once-subtracted $P$-wave amplitude. An analysis is presented of elastic $P$-wave $ππ$ phase shifts and inelasticities up to 2 GeV, aimed at identifying the corresponding $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ excited $ρ$ resonances and focusing on the $ρ(1250)$ vs. $ρ(1450)$ controversy. The approach employs an improved parametrization in terms of a manifestly unitary and analytic three-channel $S$-matrix with its complex-energy pole positions. The included channels are $ππ$, $\rho2π$, and $ρρ$, the latter two being effective in the sense that they mimic several experimentally observed decay modes with nearby thresholds. In an alternative fit, the $\rho2π$ mode is replaced by $ωπ$, which is also an experimentally relevant channel. The improvement with respect to prior work amounts to the enforcement of maximum crossing symmetry through once-subtracted dispersion relations called GKPY equations. A separate analysis concerns the pion electromagnetic form factor, which again demonstrates the enormous importance of guaranteeing unitarity and analyticity when dealing with very broad and highly inelastic resonances. In the case of $ρ(1250)$ vs. $ρ(1450)$, the failure to do so is shown to give rise to an error in the predicted mass of about 170 MeV. A clear picture emerges from these analyses, identifying five vector $ρ$ states below 2 GeV, viz. $ρ(770)$, $ρ(1250)$, $ρ(1450)$, $ρ(1600)$, and $ρ(1800)$, with $ρ(1250)$ being indisputably the most important excited $ρ$ resonance. The stability of the fits as well as the imposition of unitarity, analyticity, and approximate crossing symmetry in the analyses lend very strong support to these assignments. The possibly far-reaching consequences for meson spectroscopy are discussed.

We consider the unsteady thin-film dynamics of a long bubble of negligible viscosity that advances at a uniform speed in a cylindrical capillary tube. The bubble displaces a viscous, nonwetting fluid, creating a thin film between its interface and the tube walls. The film is considered thin enough that intermolecular forces in the form of van der Waals attractions are significant and thin-film rupture is possible. In the case of negligible intermolecular forces, a steady-state solution exits where a film of uniform thickness is deposited in the annular region between the bubble interface and the tube walls. However, once intermolecular interactions are important, the interface is perturbed out of its steady state and either (i) the perturbation grows sufficiently before reaching the rear meniscus of the bubble such that rupture occurs; or (ii) the perturbation remains small due to weak intermolecular forces until it leaves the bubble interface through the rear meniscus. We obtain, both numerically and asymptotically, the time-scale over which rupture occurs, and thus, we find a critical capillary number, depending on the bubble length and the strength of the intermolecular forces, below which the film is predicted to rupture.

The dynamics of a thin liquid film on the underside of a curved cylindrical substrate is studied. The evolution of the liquid layer is investigated as the film thickness and the radius of curvature of the substrate are varied. A dimensionless parameter (a modified Bond number) that incorporates both geometric parameters, gravity, and surface tension is identified, and allows the observations to be classified according to three different flow regimes: stable films, films with transient growth of perturbations followed by decay, and unstable films. Experiments and theory confirm that, below a critical value of the Bond number, curvature of the substrate suppresses the Rayleigh-Taylor instability.
