High pressure shear band formation is a critical phenomenon in energetic materials due to its influence on both mechanical strength and mechanochemical activation. While shear banding is know to occur in a variety of these materials, the governing dynamics of the mechanisms is not well defined for molecular crystals. We conduct molecular dynamics simulations of shock wave induced shear band formation in the energetic material 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) to assess shear band nucleation processes. We find, that at high pressures, the initial formation sites for shear bands 'over-nucleate' and rapidly lower deviatoric stresses prior to shear band formation and growth. This results in the suppression of plastic deformation. A local cluster analysis is used to quantify and contrast this mechanism with a more typical shear banding seen at lower pressures. These results demonstrate a mechanism that is reversible in nature and that supersedes shear band formation at increased pressures. We anticipate that these results will have a broad impact on the modeling and development of high strain rate application materials such as those for high explosives and hypersonic systems.

Neutron star mergers are astrophysical `gold mines,' synthesizing over half of the elements heavier than iron through rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis. The observation of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, detected both in gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation, marked a breakthrough. One electromagnetic component of this event, the gamma ray burst GRB 170817A, has an unresolved aspect: the characteristics of its prompt gamma-ray emission spectrum. In this work, we propose that gamma-ray spectra in such GRBs may be influenced by de-excitations from isomeric transitions. Our study begins with a review of current knowledge on GRB structure and of r-process nucleosynthesis in neutron star collisions, focusing on the role of nuclear isomers in these settings. We then test our hypothesis by develo** criteria to select representative isomers, based on known solar element abundances, for modeling GRB spectral characteristics. We integrate these criteria into an interactive web page, facilitating the construction and analysis of relevant gamma-ray spectra from isomeric transitions. Our analysis reveals that three isomers (zirconium, lead and yttrium) stand out for their potential to impact the prompt GRB spectrum due to their specific properties. This information allows us to incorporate nuclear isomer data into astrophysical simulations and calculate isomeric abundances generated by astrophysical r-processes in neutron star mergers and their imprint on the detected signal.

We investigate the benefit of combining blind audio recordings with 3D scene information for novel-view acoustic synthesis. Given audio recordings from 2-4 microphones and the 3D geometry and material of a scene containing multiple unknown sound sources, we estimate the sound anywhere in the scene. We identify the main challenges of novel-view acoustic synthesis as sound source localization, separation, and dereverberation. While naively training an end-to-end network fails to produce high-quality results, we show that incorporating room impulse responses (RIRs) derived from 3D reconstructed rooms enables the same network to jointly tackle these tasks. Our method outperforms existing methods designed for the individual tasks, demonstrating its effectiveness at utilizing 3D visual information. In a simulated study on the Matterport3D-NVAS dataset, our model achieves near-perfect accuracy on source localization, a PSNR of 26.44 dB and a SDR of 14.23 dB for source separation and dereverberation, resulting in a PSNR of 25.55 dB and a SDR of 14.20 dB on novel-view acoustic synthesis. Code, pretrained model, and video results are available on the project webpage (https://github.com/apple/ml-nvas3d).

The gravitational waves produced by binary neutron star mergers offer a unique window into matter behavior under extreme conditions. In this context, we model analytically the effect of matter on the gravitational waves from binary neutron star mergers. We start with a binary black hole system, leveraging the post-Newtonian formalism for the inspiral and the Backwards-one-Body model for the merger. We combine the two methods to generate a baseline waveform and we validate our results against numerical relativity simulations. Next, we integrate tidal effects in phase and amplitude to account for matter and spacetime interaction, by using the NRTidal model, and test its accuracy against numerical relativity predictions, for two equations of state, finding a mismatch around the merger. Subsequently, we lift the restriction on the coefficients to be independent of the tidal deformability, and recalibrate them using the numerical relativity predictions. We obtain better fits for phase and amplitude around the merger, and are able to extend the phase modeling beyond the merger. We implement our method in a new open-source Python code, steered by a Jupyter Notebook. Our research offers new perspectives on analytically modeling the effect of tides on the gravitational waves from binary neutron star mergers.

However, there are numerous mechanisms in play that can be dependent on a variety of microstructural features. Machine learning techniques such as neural networks offer a ubiquitous method to develop models for physical processes. Limiting what kinds of microstructural information is used as input and assessing normalized changes in network error, the relative importance of different mechanisms can be inferred. Here we utilize binned, initial density information as network inputs to predict local shock heating in a granular high explosive trained from large scale, molecular dynamics simulations. Numerous crystal- and microstructural-level mechanisms are at play in the formation of hotspots, which are known to govern high explosive initiation behavior. Most of these mechanisms, including pore collapse, interfacial friction, and shear banding, involve both compressive and shear work done within the material and have thus far remained difficult to separate. We assess hotspots formed at shocked crystal-crystal interfaces using quasi-1D molecular dynamics simulations that isolate effects due to compression and shear. Two high explosive materials are considered (TATB and PETN) that exhibit distinctly different levels of molecular conformational flexibility and crystal packing anisotropy. Temperature and intra-molecular strain energy localization in the hotspot is assessed through parametric variation of the crystal orientation and two velocity components that respectively modulate compression and shear work. The resulting hotspots are found to be highly localized to a region within 5-20 nm of the crystal-crystal interface. Compressive work plays a considerably larger role in localizing temperature and intra-molecular strain energy for both materials and all crystal orientations considered. Shear induces a moderate increase in energy localization relative to unsheared cases only for relatively weak compressive shock pressures of approximately 10 GPa. These results help isolate and rank the relative importance of hotspot generation mechanisms and are anticipated to guide the treatment of crystal-crystal interfaces in coarse-grained models of polycrystalline high explosive materials.

These force fields are computationally inexpensive as compared to electronic structure calculations and allow for simulations of millions of atoms. However, the accuracy of traditional force fields is limited by their functional forms, preventing continual refinement and improvement. Therefore, we develop a neural network based reactive interatomic potential for the prediction of the mechanical, thermal, and chemical response of energetic materials at extreme conditions for energetic materials. The training set is expanded in an automatic iterative approach and consists of various CHNO materials and their reactions under ambient and under shock loading conditions. This process is moderately understood for isolated molecules and uni-molecular processes. However, in condensed matter processes such as phase transformations, material properties and structure may influence typical mechanochemical effects. Therefore, we utilize steered molecular dynamics to induce out of plane strains in graphite and compress the system under a constant strain rate to induce phase transformation. We show that the out of plane strain allows for phase transformations to initiate at lower amounts of compressive strain. Yet, in contrast to typical mechanochemical results, the sum of compressive and out of plane work needed to form diamond has a local minimum due to altered defect formation processes during phase transformation. Additionally, these altered processes slow the kinetics of the phase transformation, taking longer from initiation to total material transformation.

Mechanophores, stimuli-responsive molecules that respond chromatically to mechanochemical reactions, are important for understanding the coupling between mechanics and chemistry as well as in engineering applications. However, the atomic-level understanding of their activation originates from gas phase studies or under simple linear elongation forces directly on molecules or polymer chains containing mechanophores. The effect of many-body distortions, pervasive in condensed-phase applications, is not understood. Therefore, we performed large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of a PMMA-spiropyran co-polymer under dynamic mechanical loading and studied the activation of the mechanophore under various conditions from dynamical compression to tension during unloading. Detailed analysis of the all-atom MD trajectories shows that the mechanophore blocks experience significant many-body intra-molecular distortion that can significantly decrease the activation barrier as compared to when deformation rates are slow relative to molecular relaxation timescales. We find that the reactivity of mechanophores under material compression states is governed by many-body effects of intra-molecular torsions, whereas under tension the reactions are governed by tensile stresses.

Atomistic and continuum scale modeling efforts have shown that shock induced collapse of porosity can occur via a wide range of mechanisms dependent on pore morphology, shockwave pressure, and material properties. The mechanisms that occur under weaker shocks tend to be more efficient at localizing thermal energy, but do not result in high, absolute temperatures or spatially large localizations compared to mechanisms found under strong shock conditions. However, the energetic material TATB undergoes a wide range of collapse mechanisms that are not typical of similar materials, leaving the collapse mechanisms and the resultant energy localization from collapse, i.e., hotspots, relatively uncharacterized. Therefore, we present pore collapse simulations of cylindrical pores in TATB for a wide range of pore sizes and shock strengths that trigger viscoplastic collapses that occur almost entirely perpendicular to the shock direction for weak shocks and hydrodynamic-like collapses for strong shocks that do not break the strong hydrogen bonds of the TATB basal planes. The resulting hotspot temperature fields from these mechanisms follow trends that differ considerably from other energetic materials; hence we compare them under normalized temperature values to assess the relative efficiency of each mechanism to localize energy. The local intra-molecular strain energy of the hotspots is also assessed to better understand the physical mechanisms behind the phenomena that leads to a latent potential energy.

Mounting computational evidence points to accelerated chemistry in hotspots from large intramolecular strains induced via the interactions between the shockwave and microstructure. However, definite evidence map** intramolecular strain to accelerated or altered chemical reactions has so far been elusive. From a large-scale reactive molecular dynamics simulation of the energetic material TATB, we map molecular temperature and intramolecular strain energy prior to reaction to decomposition kinetics. A detailed analysis of the atomistic trajectory shows that intramolecular strain can induce a mechanochemical alteration of decomposition mechanisms. Merging black holes produce the loudest signal in the detectors. However, this is the most difficult signal to accurately predict with analytical techniques. Only computer simulations can account for the nonlinear physics during the collision, but they are inherently complex, costly, and affected by numerical errors. In order to bypass this problem, two analytical models for the merger have been developed: the Implicit Rotating Source (IRS) and the newer Backwards one Body (BoB). In this work, we assess the performance of the BoB model by comparing it with the older IRS model and with the numerical data, identifying its strengths and weaknesses. Our main finding reveals discrepancies in amplitude, but overall excellent accord in frequency. The BoB model is comparable with the IRS and NR simulations, having the added advantage that it depends only indirectly on numerical data, it accounts for spin, and it offers a seamless fit with the analytical formalisms for the inspiral. By independently evaluating and testing those models, we bring evidence of their reproducibility, thus upholding high scientific standards, and make available our implementation, enabling readers to evaluate our results themselves.

Gravitational waves (GW) from eccentric binaries have intricate signals encoding important features about the location, creation and evolution of the sources. Eccentricity shortens the merger time, making the emitted GW statistically predominant in the observed data once detectors will reach the required sensitivity. We present a novel implementation of fully analytical GW templates from eccentric binary black hole (BBH) mergers within the \texttt{Wolfram Mathematica} software. We increase the accuracy by identifying and minimizing the possible source of errors. We start with an overview of the physics involved in eccentric mergers, then assemble the strain for the inspiral by employing up to six post-Newtonian (PN) corrections. We complete the eccentric inspiral with the quasi-circular Backwards one Body (BoB) merger model in frequency, amplitude and phase, then we build the hybrid GW strain for the whole evolution of the binary. For low eccentricity we reach coincidence in the overlap, with no ambiguity in the time interval, a remarkable improvement from the usual matching techniques. For high-eccentricity we compensate for the implicit quasi-circular assumption of the BOB approach, by introducing a small rescaling in amplitude. Our streamlined implementation is relevant for the new field of GW astronomy and is straightforward to understand, use and extend, offering researchers in the field a valuable open resource tool.

The complex polycrystalline structure of these materials leads to a network of hotspot that can coalesce into deflagration and detonation waves. Significant progress has been made on the formation and potency of hotspots using atomistic simulations, but most of the work has focused on ideal and isolated defects. Hence, developed a method, denoted PBXGen, to build realistic PBX microstructures for all-atom simulations. PBXGen is generally applicable, and we demonstrate it with two systems: an RDX-polystyrene PBX with a 3D microstructure and a TATB-polystyrene with columnar grains. In energetic materials, the localization of energy into "hotspots" when a shock wave interacts with the material's microstructure is known to dictate the initiation of chemical reactions and detonation. Recent results have shown that, following the shock-induced collapse of pores with circular cross-sections, more energy is localized as internal potential energy (PE) than can be inferred from the kinetic energy (KE) distribution. This leads to a complex thermo-mechanical state that is typically overlooked. The mechanisms associated with pore collapse and hotspot formation and the resulting energy localization are known to be highly dependent on material properties, especially its ability to deform plastically and alleviate strain energy, as well as the size and shape of the pore. Therefore, we use molecular dynamics simulations to characterize shock-induced pore collapse and the subsequent formation of hotspots in TATB, a highly anisotropic molecular crystal, for various defect shapes, shock strengths and crystallographic orientations. We find that the the localization of energy as PE is consistently higher and its extent larger than as localized as KE. A detailed analysis of the MD trajectories reveal the underlying molecular process that govern the effect of orientation and pore shape on the resulting hotspots. We find that the regions of highest PE for a given KE relate to not the impact front of the collapse, but the areas of maximum plastic deformation, while KE is maximized at the point of impact. A comparison with previous results in HMX reveal less energy localization in TATB which could be a contributing factor to its insensitivity.

To date, hotspots have been described via their temperature fields. Nonreactive, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of shock-induced pore collapse in a molecular crystal show that more energy is localized as potential energy (PE) than can be inferred from the temperature field and that PE localization persists through thermal diffusion. The British Geological Survey's global geomagnetic model, Model of the Earth's Magnetic Environment (MEME), is an important tool for calculating the earth's magnetic field, which is continually in flux. Whilst the ability to collect data from ground based observation sites and satellites has grown, the memory bound nature of the code has proved a limitation in modelling problem sizes required by modern science. In this paper we describe work replacing the bespoke, sequential, eigen-solver with that of the SLEPc package for solving the system of normal equations. This work had a dual purpose, to break through the memory limit of the code, and thus support the modelling of much larger systems, by supporting execution on distributed machines, and to improve performance. But when adopting SLEPc it was not just the solving of the normal equations, but also fundamentally how we build and distribute the data structures. We describe an approach for building symmetric matrices in a way that provides good load balance and avoids the need for close co-ordination between processes or replication of work. We also study the memory bound nature of the code and combine detailed profiling with software cache prefetching to significantly optimise. Performance and scaling are explored on ARCHER, a Cray XC30, where we achieve a speed up for the solver of 294 times by replacing the model's bespoke approach with SLEPc. This work also provided the ability to model much larger system sizes, up to 100,000 model coefficients. Some of the challenges of modelling systems of this large scale are explored, and mitigations including hybrid MPI+OpenMP along with the use of iterative solvers are also considered. The result of this work is a modern MEME model that is not only capable of simulating problem sizes demanded by state of the art geomagnetism but also acts as further evidence to the utility of the SLEPc libary.

The dominant contributions in the $π^\pm K^\mp$ and $K^{+}K^{-}$ systems are the nonresonant and the $B^\pm \to ρ(1450)^{0}π^{\pm}$ amplitudes, respectively, with fit fractions around $30\%$. For the rescattering contribution, a sizeable fit fraction is observed. This component has the largest $CP$ asymmetry reported to date for a single amplitude of $(-66 \pm 4 \pm 2)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant $CP$ violation is observed in the other contributions.

An untagged and time-integrated amplitude analysis of $B^0_{(s)} \to (K^+π^-)(K^-π^+) $ decays in two-body invariant mass regions of 150 MeV$/c^2$ around the $K^{*0}$ mass is performed. A stronger longitudinal polarisation fraction in the ${B^0 \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}}$ decay, ${f_L = 0.724 \pm 0.051 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.016 \,({\rm syst})}$, is observed as compared to ${f_L = 0.240 \pm 0.031 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.025 \,({\rm syst})}$ in the ${B^0_s\to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}}$ decay. The ratio of branching fractions of the two decays is measured and used to determine $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}) = (8.0 \pm 0.9 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.4 \,({\rm syst})) \times 10^{-7}$.

For this search, the $τ$ lepton is reconstructed in the $τ^{-}\toπ^{-}π^{+}π^{-}ν_τ$ channel. No significant signal is observed. Assuming no contribution from $B^{0}\toτ^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ decays, an upper limit is set on the $B^{0}_{s}\toτ^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}\left( B^{0}_{s}\toτ^{\pm}μ^{\mp}\right) < 4.2\times 10^{-5}$ at $95\%$ confidence level. If instead no contribution from $B^{0}_{s}\toτ^{\pm}μ^{\mp}$ decays is assumed, a limit of $\mathcal{B}\left( B^{0}\toτ^{\pm}μ^{\mp}\right) < 1.4\times 10^{-5}$ is obtained at $95\%$ confidence level. These are the first limit on $\mathcal{B}\left( B^{0}_{s}\toτ^{\pm}μ^{\mp}\right)$ and the world's best limit on $\mathcal{B}\left( B^{0}\toτ^{\pm}μ^{\mp}\right)$.

The measurement is based on a sample of $pp$ collision data recorded with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb$^{-1}$ at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The measured values are \begin{align*} S_{φγ} &= 0.43 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.11, \\ C_{φγ} &= 0.11 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.11, \\ \mathcal{A}^Δ_{φγ} &= -0.67 \, ^{+0.37}_{-0.41} \pm 0.17, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the first measurement of the observables $S$ and $C$ in radiative $B_s^0$ decays. The results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.

The production of charged hadrons within jets recoiling against a $Z$ boson is measured in proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment. The charged-hadron structure of the jet is studied longitudinally and transverse to the jet axis for jets with transverse momentum $p_{\mathrm{T}}>20$ GeV and in the pseudorapidity range $2.5<η<4$. These are the first measurements of jet hadronization at these forward rapidities and also the first where the jet is produced in association with a $Z$ boson. In contrast to previous hadronization measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, which are dominated by gluon jets, these measurements probe predominantly light-quark jets which are found to be more longitudinally and transversely collimated with respect to the jet axis when compared to the previous gluon dominated measurements. Therefore, these results provide valuable information on differences between quarks and gluons regarding nonperturbative hadronization dynamics.

Proximity of the $Σ_c^+\bar{D}^{0}$ and $Σ_c^+\bar{D}^{*0}$ thresholds to the observed narrow peaks suggests that they play an important role in the dynamics of these states.

The observed peak has a mass of $6841.2 \pm 0.6 {\,\rm (stat)\,} \pm 0.1 {\,\rm (syst)\,} \pm 0.8\,(B_c^+) \mathrm{\,MeV}/c^2$, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the $B_c^+$ mass. It is consistent with expectations of the $B_c^{*}(2^{3}S_{1})^+$ state reconstructed without the low-energy photon from the $B_c^{*}(1^{3}S_{1})^+ \to B_c^+ γ$ decay following $B_c^{*}(2^{3}S_{1})^+ \to B_c^{*}(1^{3}S_{1})^+ π^+ π^-$. A second state is seen with a global (local) statistical significance of $2.2\,σ$ ($3.2\,σ$) and a mass of $6872.1 \pm 1.3 {\,\rm (stat)\,} \pm 0.1 {\,\rm (syst)\,} \pm 0.8\,(B_c^+) \mathrm{\,MeV}/c^2$, and is consistent with the $B_c(2^{1}S_{0})^+$ state. The flavor of the charm meson is inferred from the charge of the pion in $D^*(2010)^+ \to D^0 π^+$ decays or from the charge of the muon in $\overline{B} \to D^0 μ^-\barν_μX$ decays. The difference between the $C\!P$ asymmetries in $D^0 \to K^- K^+$ and $D^0 \to π^- π^+$ decays is measured to be $ΔA_{C\!P} = [ -18.2 \pm 3.2\,(\rm stat.) \pm 0.9\,(\rm syst.) ] \times 10^{-4}$ for $π$-tagged and $ΔA_{C\!P} = [ -9 \pm 8\,(\rm stat.) \pm 5\,(\rm syst.) ] \times 10^{-4} $ for $μ$-tagged $D^0$ mesons. Combining these with previous LHCb results leads to $$ΔA_{C\!P} = ( -15.4 \pm 2.9) \times 10^{-4},$$ where the uncertainty includes both statistical and systematic contributions. The measured value differs from zero by more than five standard deviations. This is the first observation of $C\!P$ violation in the decay of charm hadrons.

A search for $CP$ violation in charmless four-body decays of $Λ_b$ and $Ξ_b^0$ baryons with a proton and three charged mesons in the final state is performed. To cancel out production and detection charge-asymmetry effects, the search is carried out by measuring the difference between the $CP$ asymmetries in a charmless decay and in a decay with an intermediate charmed baryon with the same particles in the final state. The data sample used was recorded in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3 {\rm fb}^{-1}$. A total of 18 $CP$ asymmetries are considered, either accounting for the full phase space of the decays or exploring specific regions of the decay kinematics. No significant $CP$-violation effect is observed in any of the measurements.

A time-dependent amplitude analysis is used to determine the final-state resonance contributions, the $CP$-violating phase $φ_s=-0.057\pm 0.060\pm 0.011$ rad, the decay-width difference between the heavier mass $B_{s}^{0}$ eigenstate and the $B^{0}$ meson of $-0.050\pm 0.004\pm 0.004$ ps$^{-1}$, and the $CP$-violating parameter $|λ|=1.01_{-0.06}^{+0.08}\pm0.03$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These results are combined with previous LHCb measurements in the same decay channel using 7 TeV and 8 TeV $pp$ collisions obtaining $φ_s =0.002\pm0.044\pm0.012$ rad, and $|λ| =0.949\pm0.036\pm0.019$.

We report a measurement of the mass difference between neutral charm-meson eigenstates using a novel approach that enhances sensitivity to this parameter. We use $2.3\times 10^6$ $D^0\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays reconstructed in proton-proton collisions collected by the \lhcb experiment in 2011 and 2012. Allowing for $CP$ violation in mixing and in the interference between mixing and decay, we measure the $CP$-averaged normalized mass difference $x_{CP} = \left[2.7\pm1.6\text{(stat)}\pm0.4\text{(syst)}\right]\times10^{-3}$ and the $CP$-violating parameter $Δx = \left[-0.53\pm0.70\text{(stat)}\pm0.22\text{(syst)}\right]\times10^{-3}$. The results are consistent with $CP$ symmetry. These determinations are the most precise from a single experiment and, combined with current world-average results, yield the first evidence that the masses of the neutral charm-meson eigenstates differ.

High-yield samples of kinematically and topologically similar Cabibbo-favored $D_{(s)}^+$ decays are analyzed to subtract nuisance asymmetries due to production and detection effects, including those induced by $CP$ violation in the neutral kaon system. The results are \begin{align*} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D_s^+\to K_S^0 π^+) &=\left(\phantom{-}1.3\phantom{0}\pm1.9\phantom{0}\pm0.5\phantom{0}\right)\times10^{-3},\\ \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^+\to K_S^0 K^+) &=\left(-0.09\pm0.65\pm0.48\right)\times10^{-3},\\ \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^+\to φπ^+) &=\left(\phantom{-}0.05\pm0.42\pm0.29\right)\times10^{-3}, \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These ratios, averaged over the $b$-hadron transverse momenta from 4 to 25 GeV and pseudorapidity from 2 to 5, are $0.122 \pm 0.006$ for $\overline{B}_s^0$, and $0.259 \pm 0.018$ for $Λ_b^0$, where the uncertainties arise from both statistical and systematic sources. The $Λ_b^0$ ratio depends strongly on transverse momentum, while the $\overline{B}_s^0$ ratio shows a mild dependence. Neither ratio shows variations with pseudorapidity. The measurements are made using semileptonic decays to minimize theoretical uncertainties. In addition, the ratio of $D^+$ to $D^0$ mesons produced in the sum of $\overline{B}^0$ and $B^-$ semileptonic decays is determined as $0.359\pm0.006\pm 0.009$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic.

The production of $B^+$, $B^0$ and $Λ_b^0$ hadrons is studied in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=8.16\,{\rm TeV}$ recorded with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The measurement uses a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $12.2\pm0.3\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ for the case where the proton beam is projected into the LHCb detector (corresponding to measuring hadron production at positive rapidity) and $18.6\pm0.5\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ for the lead beam projected into the LHCb detector (corresponding to measuring hadron production at negative rapidity). Nuclear effects are probed through double-differential cross-sections, forward-to-backward cross-section ratios and nuclear modification factors of the beauty hadrons. The double-differential cross-sections are measured as a function of the beauty-hadron transverse momentum and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame. Forward-to-backward cross-section ratios and nuclear modification factors indicate a significant nuclear suppression at positive rapidity. The ratio of $Λ_b^0$ over $B^0$ production cross-sections is reported and is consistent with the corresponding measurement in $pp$~collisions.

The first observation of the decays $B^0_{(s)} \to J/ψp \overline{p}$ is reported, using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.2{\text{\,fb}}^{-1}$, collected with the \mbox{LHCb}\xspace detector. These decays are suppressed due to limited available phase space, as well as due to Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka or Cabibbo suppression. The measured branching fractions are \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(B^0 \to J/ψp \overline{p}) &= (4.51\pm 0.40\; \text{(stat)} \pm 0.44\; \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-7}, \\ \mathcal{B}(B^0_s \to J/ψp \overline{p}) &= (3.58\pm 0.19\; \text{(stat)} \pm 0.39\; \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-6}. \end{align*} For the $B^0_s$ meson, the result is much higher than the expected value of $ {\cal O} (10^{-9})$. The small available phase space in these decays also allows for the most precise single measurement of both the $B^0$ mass as ${5279.74 \pm 0.30\; ({\rm stat})\pm 0.10\; ({\rm syst})}$ MeV, and the $B^0_s$ mass as ${5366.85 \pm 0.19\; ({\rm stat})\pm 0.13\; ({\rm syst})}$ MeV.

In the kinematic region $2 < η< 6$ and $p_{\rm T}<20$ GeV/$c$, we measure \begin{align*} \frac{f_{Ξ_b^-}}{f_{Λ_b^0}}\frac{\mathcal{B}(Ξ_b^-\to J/ψΞ^-)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)} &= (10.8\pm0.9\pm0.8)\times10^{-2}~~[\sqrt{s}=7,8~{\rm TeV}],\\ \frac{f_{Ξ_b^-}}{f_{Λ_b^0}}\frac{\mathcal{B}(Ξ_b^-\to J/ψΞ^-)}{\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)} &= (13.1\pm1.1\pm1.0)\times10^{-2}~~[\sqrt{s}=13~{\rm TeV}], \end{align*} where $f_{Ξ_b^-}$ and $f_{Λ_b^0}$ are the fragmentation fractions of $b$ quarks into $Ξ_b^-$ and $Λ_b^0$ baryons, respectively, ${\mathcal{B}}$ represents branching fractions, and the uncertainties are due to statistical and experimental systematic sources. The values of $f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0}$ are obtained by invoking SU(3) symmetry in the $Ξ_b^-\to JψΞ^-$ and $Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ$ decays. Production asymmetries between $Ξ_b^-$ and $\barΞ_b^+$ baryons are also reported.
The mass of the $Ξ_b^-$ baryon is also measured relative to that of the $Λ_b^0$ baryon, from which it is found that \begin{align*} m(Ξ_b^-) &= 5796.70\pm0.39\pm0.15\pm0.17~{\rm MeV}/c^2, \end{align*} where the last uncertainty is due to the precision on the known $Λ_b^0$ mass. This result represents the most precise determination of the $Ξ_b^-$ mass.

An angular analysis of $B^0\to J/ψK^+π^-$ decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3~${\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $m(K^+π^-)$ spectrum is divided into fine bins. In each $m(K^+π^-)$ bin, the hypothesis that the three-dimensional angular distribution can be described by structures induced only by $K^\ast$ resonances is examined, making minimal assumptions about the $K^+π^-$ system. The data reject the $K^\ast$-only hypothesis with a large significance, implying the observation of exotic contributions in a model-independent fashion. Inspection of the $m(J/ψπ^-)$ versus $m(K^+π^-)$ plane suggests structures near $m(J/ψπ^-)=4200$~MeV and 4600~MeV.

We present work in progress to craft open-sourced numerical tools that will enable the calculation of electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational waveforms: the {\tt GiRaFFE} (General Relativistic Force-Free Electrodynamics) code. {\tt GiRaFFE} numerically solves the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics system of equations in the force-free limit, to model the magnetospheres surrounding compact binaries, in order (1) to characterize the nonlinear interaction between the source and its surrounding magnetosphere, and (2) to evaluate the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational waves, including the production of collimated jets. We apply this code to various configurations of spinning black holes immersed in external magnetic field, in order to both test our implementation, and to explore the effect of strong gravitational field, high spins and of misalignment between the magnetic field lines an black hole spin, on the electromagnetic output and the collimation of Poynting jets.
We will extend our work to collisions of black holes immersed in external magnetic field, which are prime candidates for coincident detection in both gravitational and electromagnetic spectra.

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHC's flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras.

The analysis uses 3 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The $CP$ averages and asymmetries are measured for the magnitudes and phase differences of the contributing amplitudes. The $CP$-averaged longitudinal polarisation fractions of the vector-vector modes are found to be $\tilde{f}^0_{ρK^{*}} = 0.164 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.022$ and $\tilde{f}^0_{ωK^{*}} = 0.68 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.16$, and their $CP$ asymmetries, $\mathcal{A}^0_{ρK^{*}} = -0.62 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.09$ and $\mathcal{A}^0_{ωK^{*}} = -0.13 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.13$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

A search for $CP$ violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed $D^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^- π^+ π^-$ decay mode is performed using an amplitude analysis. The measurement uses a sample of $pp$ collisions recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$. The $D^0$ mesons are reconstructed from semileptonic $b$-hadron decays into $D^0μ^- X$ final states. The selected sample contains more than 160000 signal decays, allowing the most precise amplitude modelling of this $D^0$ decay to date. The obtained amplitude model is used to perform the search for $CP$ violation. The result is compatible with $CP$ symmetry, with a sensitivity ranging from 1% to 15% depending on the amplitude considered.
