The junctions were fabricated on polished surfaces of UPt_3 single crystals. The shape of the resulting diffraction patterns provides phase sensitive information on the superconducting order parameter. Our corner junction data show asymmetric patterns with respect to magnetic field, indicating a complex order parameter, and both our junction and SQUID measurements point to a phase shift of Pi, supporting the E_2u representation of the order parameter.

The Ba-based pnictide crystals contain significant amounts of Sn in their structure, $\sim 1$%, giving rise to magnetic impurity effects evident in the NMR spectrum and in the magnetization. Our experiments show that the large impurity magnetization is broadly distributed on a microscopic scale, generating substantial magnetic field gradients. There is a concomitant 20% reduction in the transition temperature which is most likely due to magnetic electron scattering. We suggest that the relative robustness of superconductivity ($x=0.45$) in the presence of severe magnetic inhomogeneity might be accounted for by strong spatial correlations between impurities on the coherence length scale.

An overview of impurity effects is presented with emphasis on those experiments which have a quantitative interpretation in terms of theoretical models for homogeneous and inhomogeneous scattering. The latter can account successfully for most experimental results.

We have developed a novel procedure for constructing high surface area silver sinter heat exchangers. Our recipe incorporates nylon fibers having a diameter of ~ 50 microns and thin wires of bulk silver in the heat exchanger. In order to increase the thermal conductance of liquid helium within the heat exchanger, prior to sintering, the nylon fibers are dissolved with an organic acid leaving a network of channels. In addition, the silver wires reinforce the structural integrity, and reduce the resistance, of the silver sinter. We have constructed a 3-He melting curve thermometer (MCT) with this type of heat exchanger and measured the thermal time response of the liquid 3-He inside the MCT in the temperature range T = 2-150 mK. We find a thermal relaxation time of ~ 490 s at T ~ 1 mK. We have used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterize the heat exchanger and BET absorption for determination of the specific surface area.

Measurements of superfluid $^3$He in 98% aerogel demonstrate the existence of a metastable \emph{A}-like phase and a stable \emph{B}-like phase. It has been suggested that the relative stability of these two phases is controlled by anisotropic quasiparticle scattering in the aerogel. Anisotropic scattering produced by axial compression of the aerogel has been predicted to stabilize the axial state of superfluid $^3$He. To explore this possiblity, we used transverse acoustic impedance to map out the phase diagram of superfluid $^3$He in a $\sim 98$% porous silica aerogel subjected to 17% axial compression. We have previously shown that axial anisotropy in aerogel leads to optical birefringence and that optical cross-polarization studies can be used to characterize such anisotropy. Consequently, we have performed optical cross-polarization experiments to verify the presence and uniformity of the axial anisotropy in our aerogel sample. We find that uniform axial anisotropy introduced by 17% compression does not stabilize the \emph{A}-like phase. We also find an increase in the supercooling of the \emph{A}-like phase at lower pressure, indicating a modification to \emph{B}-like phase nucleation in \emph{globally} anisotropic aerogels.

Changes in the transverse phase velocity near pair-breaking have been explained in terms of an order parameter collective mode that arises from f-wave pairing interactions, the so-called J=4- mode. Using these measurements, we establish lower bounds on the energy gap in the B-phase. Measurement of attenuation of longitudinal sound at low temperature and energies far above the pair-breaking threshold, are in agreement with the lower bounds set on pair-breaking. Finally, we discuss our estimations for the strength of the f-wave pairing interactions and the Fermi liquid parameter, F4s.

Order parameter collective modes are the fingerprint of a condensed phase. The spectroscopy of these modes in superfluid $^3$He and unconventional superconductors can provide key information on the symmetry of the condensate as well as the microscopic pairing mechanism responsible for the ground state and excitation energies. We report the discovery of a new collective mode in superfluid $^3$He-B which we identify as an excited bound state of Cooper pairs. We use interferometry within an acoustic cavity that is very sensitive to changes in the velocity of transverse sound. Our measurements of sound velocity and mode frequency, together with the observation of acoustic birefringence indicate that this new mode is weakly bound with an excitation energy within 1% of the pair-breaking edge of $2Δ$. Based on the selection rules for coupling of transverse sound to a collective mode in $^3$He-B, combined with the observation of acoustic birefringence near the collective mode frequency, we infer that the new mode is most likely a spin-triplet (S=1), $f$-wave pair exciton (L=3) with total angular momentum, J=4. The existence of a pair exciton with J=4 suggests an attractive, sub-dominant, $f$-wave pairing interaction in liquid $^3$He.

In the Ginzburg-Landau theory of superfluid $^{3}$He, the free energy is expressed as an expansion of invariants of a complex order parameter. Strong coupling effects, which increase with increasing pressure, are embodied in the set of coefficients of these order parameter invariants\cite{Leg75,Thu87}. Experiments can be used to determine four independent combinations of the coefficients of the five fourth order invariants. This leaves the phenomenological description of the thermodynamics near $T_{c}$ incomplete. Theoretical understanding of these coefficients is also quite limited. We analyze our measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and the NMR frequency shift in the $B$-phase which refine the four experimental inputs to the phenomenological theory. We propose a model based on existing experiments, combined with calculations by Sauls and Serene\cite{Sau81} of the pressure dependence of these coefficients, in order to determine all five fourth order terms. This model leads us to a better understanding of the thermodynamics of superfluid $^{3}$He in its various states. We discuss the surface tension of bulk superfluid $^{3}$He and predictions for novel states of the superfluid such as those that are stabilized by elastic scattering of quasiparticles from a highly porous silica aerogel.

Superconductors have two key characteristics. They expel magnetic field and they conduct electrical current with zero resistance. However, both properties are compromised in high magnetic fields which can penetrate the material and create a mixed state of quantized vortices. The vortices move in response to an electrical current dissipating energy which destroys the zero resistance state\cite{And64}. One of the central problems for applications of high temperature superconductivity is the stabilization of vortices to ensure zero electrical resistance. We find that vortices in the anisotropic superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) have a phase transition from a liquid state, which is inherently unstable, to a two-dimensional vortex solid. We show that at high field the transition temperature is independent of magnetic field, as was predicted theoretically for the melting of an ideal two-dimensional vortex lattice\cite{Fis80,Gla91}. Our results indicate that the stable solid phase can be reached at any field as may be necessary for applications involving superconducting magnets\cite{Has04,Sca04,COHMAG}. The vortex solid is disordered, as suggested by previous studies at lower fields\cite{Lee93,Cub93}. But its evolution with increasing magnetic field displays unexpected threshold behavior that needs further investigation.

The composite spectra in the superconducting state can be understood in terms of anisotropy of the upper critical field, $γ_{H}$, which is determined to be 5.4 at low temperature. Using Brandt's algorithm\cite{Brandt} the full spectrum, including satellites, was simulated for the temperature 8 K and a magnetic field of 1.97 T. The penetration depth $λ$ was determined to be $1,152\pm50$ Å, and the anisotropy of the penetration depth, $γ_λ$, was estimated to be close to one at low temperature. Therefore, our findings establish that there are two different anisotropies for upper critical field and penetration depth at low temperatures.

Strong-coupling contributions to the quasiparticle interactions are known to account for this effect and they are manifest in the five $β$-coefficients of the fourth order Ginzburg-Landau free energy terms. The Ginzburg-Landau free energy also has a coefficient $g_{z}$ to include magnetic field coupling to the order parameter. From NMR susceptibility experiments, we find the deviation of $g_{z}$ from its weak-coupling value to be negligible at all pressures. New results for the pressure dependence of four different combinations of $β$-coefficients, $β$_{345}, $β$_{12}, $β$_{245}, and $β$_{5} are calculated and comparison is made with theory.

A second method generates anisotropy during the growth and drying stages. We have grown cylindrical $\sim$98% aerogels with anisotropy indicated by preferential radial shrinkage after supercritical drying and find that this shrinkage correlates with small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The growth-induced anisotropy was found to be $\sim90^\circ$ out of phase relative to that induced by strain. This has implications for the possible stabilization of superfluid phases with specific symmetry.

Abstract:
High resolution measurements of the specific heat of liquid $^{3}$He in the presence of a silver surface have been performed at temperatures near the superfluid transition in the pressure range of 1 to 29 bar. The surface contribution to the heat capacity is identified with Andreev bound states of $^{3}$He quasiparticles that have a range of half a coherence length.

Using 8.69 MHz continuous wave excitation, we measured the acoustic shear impedance as a function of temperature for the sample pressure of 28.4 and 33.5 bar. We observed the A-B transition on warming in zero magnetic field. Our observations show that the A and B phases in aerogel coexist in a temperature range of about 100 micro-Kelvin in width. We propose that the difference in the relative stability of the A and B phases, arising from anisotropic scattering, can account for our observations.

The specific heat of superfluid $^{3}$He, disordered by a silica aerogel, is found to have a sharp discontinuity marking the thermodynamic transition to superfluidity at a temperature reduced from that of bulk $^{3}$He. The magnitude of the discontinuity is also suppressed. This disorder effect can be understood from the Ginzburg-Landau theory which takes into account elastic quasiparticle scattering suppressing both the transition temperature and the amplitude of the order parameter. We infer that the limiting temperature dependence of the specific heat is linear at low temperatures in the disordered superfluid state, consistent with predictions of gapless excitations everywhere on the Fermi surface.

We describe methods for the measurement of translational diffusion in very large static magnetic field gradients by NMR. The techniques use a "hole-burning" sequence that, with the use of fringe field gradients of 42 T/m, can image diffusion along one dimension on a submicron scale. Two varieties of this method are demonstrated, including a particularly efficient mode called the "hole-comb," in which multiple diffusion times comprising an entire diffusive evolution can be measured within the span of a single detected slice. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed, as well as their potential for addressing non-Fickian diffusion, diffusion in restricted media, and spatially inhomogeneous diffusion.

The phase diagram of the superfluid phases of $^{3}$He in 98% aerogel was determined in the range of pressure from 15 to 33 bars and for fields up to 3 kG using high-frequency sound. The superfluid transition in aerogel at 33.4 bars is field independent from 0 to 5 kG and shows no evidence of an $A_{1}-A_{2}$ splitting. The first-order transition between the A and B-phases is suppressed by a magnetic field, and exhibits strong supercooling at high pressures. We show that the equilibrium phase in zero applied field is the B-phase with at most a region of A-phase {\small $\alt$} 20 $μ$K just below T${_c}$ at a pressure of 33.4 bars. This is in contrast to pure $^{3}$He which has a large stable region of A-phase and a polycritical point. The quadratic coefficient for magnetic field suppression of the AB-transition, $g_{a}(β)$, was obtained. The pressure dependence of $g_{a}(β)$ is markedly different from that for the pure superfluid, $g_{0}(β)$, which diverges at a polycritical pressure of 21 bars. We compare our results with calculations from the homogeneous scattering model for $g_{a}(β)$, defined in a Ginzburg-Landau theory in terms of strong-coupling parameters $β$. We find qualitatively good agreement with the experiment if the strong-coupling corrections are rescaled from known values of the $β$'s for pure $^{3}$He, reduced by the suppression of the superfluid transition temperature. The calculations indicate that the polycritical pressure in the aerogel system is displaced well above the melting pressure and out of experimental reach. We cannot account for the puzzling supercooling of the aerogel AB-transition in zero applied field within the framework of known nucleation scenarios.

We have studied this nucleation for 3He confined to a very dilute silica aerogel. This dirty superfluid behaves in a manner similar to previous reports for the pure superfluid. But we have discovered a novel magnetically driven nucleation switch acting on the pure superfluid B-phase. Lastly, we find the surprising result that the proximity effect between the pure and dirty superfluids at their interface is insufficient to nucleate the B-phase in either superfluid.

One of the puzzling aspects of high temperature superconductors is the prevalence of magnetism in the normal state and the persistence of superconductivity in very high magnetic fields. Generally, superconductivity and magnetism are not compatible. But recent neutron scattering results indicate that antiferromagnetism can appear deep in the superconducting state in an applied magnetic field. Magnetic fields penetrate a superconductor in the form of quantized flux lines each one representing a vortex of supercurrents. Superconductivity is suppressed in the core of the vortex and it has been suggested that antiferromagnetism might develop there. To address this question it is important to perform electronic structural studies with spatial resolution. Here we report on implementation of a high field NMR imaging experiment that allows spatial resolution of the electronic behavior both inside and outside the vortex cores. Outside we find strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and localized inside there are electronic states rather different from those found in conventional superconductors.

Together these measurements enable us to test the magnetic field dependence of the pseudogap effect on the spin susceptibility in different regions of the Brillouin zone using the known form factors for different nuclei as filters. Thus, we study the momentum dispersion of the pseudogap behavior. We find that near the antiferromagnetic wave vector the pseudogap is insensitive to magnetic fields up to 15 T. In the remaining region, away from the $(π,π)$ point, the pseudogap shows a magnetic field dependence at fields less then 10 T. The first result is indicative of the opening of a spin-pseudogap that suppresses antiferromagnetic correlations below a temperature $T^*$; whereas, the second result shows the effect of pairing fluctuations on the spin susceptibility as a precursory effect of superconductivity.

In superfluid 3He-B the off-resonant coupling of the J=2-, M=+/- 1 order parameter collective modes to transverse current excitations stabilizes propagating transverse waves with low dam** for frequencies above that of the J=2- modes. Right- (RCP) and left circularly polarized (LCP) transverse modes are degenerate in zero field; however, a magnetic field with H || q lifts this degeneracy giving rise to the acoustic analog of circular birefringence and an acoustic Faraday effect for linearly polarized transverse sound waves. We present theoretical results for the temperature, pressure and field dependence of the Faraday rotation angle, and compare the theory with recent measurements. The analysis provides a direct measurement of the Lande' g-factor for the J=2- modes, and new information on the magnitude of f-wave pairing correlations in 3He-B.
