We show with first-principles molecular dynamics the persistence of intrinsic $\langle111\rangle$ Ti off-centerings for BaTiO$_3$ in its cubic paraelectric phase. Intriguingly, these are inconsistent with the Pm$\bar 3$m space group often used to atomistically model this phase using density functional theory or similar methods. Therefore we deploy a systematic symmetry analysis to construct representative structural models in the form of supercells that satisfy a desired point symmetry but are built from the combination of lower-symmetry primitive cells. We define as structural prototypes the smallest of these that are both energetically and dynamically stable. Remarkably, two 40-atom prototypes can be identified for paraelectric BaTiO$_3$; these are also common to many other $AB$O$_3$ perovskites. These prototypes can offer structural models of paraelectric phases that can be used for the computational engineering of functional materials. Last, we show that the emergence of B-cation off-centerings and the primitive-cell phonon instabilities are controlled by the equilibrium volume, in turn dictated by the filler A cation.

Abstract:
We present a density functional theory investigation of strained Ca$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$. We have determined the structure and polarization for a number of arrangements of Ca and Sr in a 2$\times$2$\times$2 supercell. The a and b lattice vectors are strained to match the lattice constants of the rotated Si(001) face. To set the context for the CSTO study, we also include simulations of the Si(…

To set the context for the CSTO study, we also include simulations of the Si(001) constrained structures for CaTiO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$. Our primary findings are that all Ca$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ structures examined except one are ferroelectric, exhibiting polarizations ranging from 0.08 C/m$^2$ for the lowest energy configuration to about 0.26 C/m$^2$ for the higher energy configurations. We find that the configurations with larger polarizations have lower c/a ratios. The net polarization of the cell is the result of Ti-O ferroelectric displacements regulated by A-site cations.

Abstract:
The stability and bonding of the ternary complex K$_2$PtCl$_6$ structure hydrides is discussed using first principles density functional calculations. The cohesion is dominated by ionic contributions, but ligand field effects are important, and are responsible for the 18-electron rule. Similarities to oxides are discussed in terms of the electronic structure. However, phonon calculations for Sr…

However, phonon calculations for Sr$_2$RuH$_6$ also show differences, particularly in the polarizability of the RuH$_6$ octahedra. Nevertheless, the yet to be made compounds Pb$_2$RuH$_6$ and Be$_2$FeH$_6$ are possible ferroelectrics. The electronic structure and magnetic properties of the decomposition product, FeBe$_2$ are reported. Implications of the results for H storage are discussed.
