The weak ferromagnet FeBO$_3$ is well known for being a unique system for modelling and testing magnetic dynamics primarily due to relatively simple and localized magnetic structure and its interesting spin wave dynamics. At room temperature, it has slightly canted iron moments lying in the a-b plane that result in a strong antiferromagnetic moment and a weak ferromagnetic moment, which results in pronounced ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin modes. However, some previous studies have shown unusual low-temperature behavior that suggests a phase transition. By performing low-temperature magnetization measurements, both in bulk and on the mesoscale, we have observed a low temperature magnetic texture in this material in which a large c-axis magnetization occurs. Magnetic fields along the c-axis as high as 1300 Oe were observed close to the sample surface. This presents evidence for the onset of a Morin transition or another type of spin-reorientation phase transition wherein the Fe3+ moments would acquire a c-axis component to their canting below a critical temperature. The observation of this c-axis magnetization suggests that there is a different ground state in this material than has been previously expected and could be due to as yet unexplored intricacies of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Abstract:
Ferroelectric tungsten-based Aurivillius oxides are naturally stable superlattice structures, in which A-site deficient perovskite blocks [WnO3n+1]-2 (n = 1, 2, 3, ...) interleave with fluorite-like bismuth oxide layers [Bi2O2]+2 along the c -axis. In the n = 2 Bi2W2O9 phase, an in-plane antipolar distortion dominates but there has been controversy as to the ground state symmetry. Here we show, us…

In the n = 2 Bi2W2O9 phase, an in-plane antipolar distortion dominates but there has been controversy as to the ground state symmetry. Here we show, using a combination of first-principles density functional theory calculations and experiments, that the ground state is a non-polar phase of Pnab symmetry. We explore the energetics of metastable phases and the potential for antiferroelectricity in this n=2 Aurivillius phase.

The magnetic, thermodynamic, and pyroelectric properties of LiFeP$_2$O$_7$ single crystals are investigated with emphasis on the magnetoelectric interaction of the electrical polarization with the magnetic order parameter. The magnetic, thermodynamic, and pyroelectric properties of LiFeP$_2$O$_7$ single crystals are investigated with emphasis on the magnetoelectric interaction of the electrical polarization with the magnetic order parameter. The magnetic order below T$_N\simeq$ 27 K is found to be a canted antiferromagnet with a weak ferromagnetic component along the $b-$axis. A sharp peak of the pyroelectric current at T$_N$ proves the strong internal magnetoelectric interaction resulting in a sizable polarization decrease at the onset of magnetic order. The magnetoelectric effect in external magnetic fields combines a linear and a quadratic field dependence below T$_N$. Thermal expansion data show a large uniaxial magnetoelastic response and prove the existence of strong spin lattice coupling. LiFeP$_2$O$_7$ is a polar compound with a strong interaction of the magnetic order parameter with the electric polarization and the lattice.

A new charge-ordered magnetically frustrated mixed-metal fluoride with a pyrochlore-related structure has been synthesized and characterized. The material, RbFe2F6 (RbFe2+Fe3+F6) was synthesized through mild hydrothermal conditions. The material exhibits a three-dimensional pyrochlore-related structure consisting of corner-shared Fe2+F6 and Fe3+F6 octahedra. In addition to single crystal diffraction data, neutron powder diffraction and magnetometry measurements were carried out. Magnetic data clearly reveal strong antiferromagnetic interactions (a Curie-Weiss temperature of -270 K) but sufficient frustration to prevent ordering until 16 K. No structural phase transformation is detected from the variable temperature neutron diffraction data. Infrared, UV -vis, thermogravimetric, and differential thermal analysis measurements were also performed. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations were also done. Crystal data: RbFe2F6, orthorhombic, space group Pnma (No. 62), a = 7.0177(6) Å, b = 7.4499(6) Å, c = 10.1765(8) Å, V = 532.04(8) Å3, Z = 4.
