Abstract:
The invariant mass method is used to identify the $^8$Be and $^9$B nuclei and Hoyle state formed in dissociation of relativistic nuclei in a nuclear track emulsion. It is shown that to identify these extremely short-lived states in the case of the isotopes $^9$Be, $^{10}$B, $^{10}$C, $^{11}$C, $^{12}$C, and $^{16}$O, it is sufficient to determine the invariant mass as a function of the angles in pairs and triples of He and H fragments in the approximation of the conservation of momentum per nucleon of the parent nucleus. According to the criteria established in this way, the contribution of these three unstable states was evaluated in the relativistic fragmentation of the $^{28}$Si and $^{197}$Au nuclei.

On this ground searching for the Hoyle state and more complex $α$-particle states in the dissociation of the heavier nuclei is suggested. A detailed study of a low-density baryonic matter arising in dissociation of the heaviest nuclei is forthcoming long-term problem. An analysis of nuclear fragmentation induced by relativistic muons is proposed to examine the mechanism dissociation.

In the DsTau experiment at the CERN SPS, an independent and direct way to measure tau neutrino production following high energy proton interactions was proposed. As the main source of tau neutrinos is a decay of Ds mesons, produced in proton-nucleus interactions, the project aims at measuring a differential cross section of this reaction. The experimental method is based on a use of high resolution emulsion detectors for effective registration of events with short lived particle decays. Here we present the motivation of the study, details of the experimental technique, and the first results of the analysis of the data collected during test runs, which prove feasibility of the full scale study of the process in future.

Stacks of nuclear track emulsion pellicles exposed to ${}^{12}$C with an energy from hundreds MeV to a few GeV per nucleon serve as the material for studies. The Hoyle state decays are reconstructed via measurement of emission angles of $α$ particles with the precision sufficient for identification of the unstable ${}^{8}$Be nucleus. The estimate of the contribution of Hoyle's state to the ${}^{12}$C $\to$ 3$α$ dissociation is 10-15\%.

A study of Event by Event analysis of maximum Pseudo-rapidity Gap Fluctuation in heavy-ion collisions in terms of the scaled variance ω has been carried out for relativistic AA collisions with multiplicity cut (N >10) using nuclear emulsion data at 4.5 AGeV/c. The values of scaled variance are found to be greater than zero indicating the presence of strong fluctuation of maximum rap gap values in the multiparticle production process. The event by event fluctuations are found to decrease with the increase of average multiplicity of the interactions. Experimental analysis has been compared with the results obtained from the analysis of events simulated by generating random numbers (MC-RAND events) and also by Ultra Relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. UrQMD model simulated values of event by event fluctuations of maximum rapidity gap are less than the corresponding experimental values.

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25$^{th}$ of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Finally, we present a first reconstruction of the direction of the laser tracks relative to the detector.

Experimental results have been compared with the prediction of Ultra Relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. Our analysis reveals the presence of multifractality in the multiparticle production process in high energy nucleus-nucleus interactions. Degree of multifractality is found to be higher for the experimental data and it increases with the increase of projectile mass. The investigation of quark-hadron phase transition in the multiparticle production in 16O-AgBr, 28Si-AgBr and 32S-AgBr interactions at 4.5 AGeV/c in the framework of Ginzburg-Landau theory from the concept of multifractality has also been presented. Evidence of constant multifractal specific heat has been obtained for both experimental and UrQMD simulated data.

The DsTau project proposes to study tau-neutrino production in high-energy proton interactions. The outcome of this experiment are prerequisite for measuring the $ν_τ$ charged-current cross section that has never been well measured. Precisely measuring the cross section would enable testing of lepton universality in $ν_τ$ scattering and it also has practical implications for neutrino oscillation experiments and high-energy astrophysical $ν_τ$ observations. $D_s$ mesons, the source of tau neutrinos, following high-energy proton interactions will be studied by a novel approach to detect the double-kink topology of the decays $D_s \rightarrow τν_τ$ and $τ\rightarrowν_τX$. Directly measuring $D_s\rightarrow τ$ decays will provide an inclusive measurement of the $D_s$ production rate and decay branching ratio to $τ$. The momentum reconstruction of $D_s$ will be performed by combining topological variables. This project aims to detect 1,000 $D_s \rightarrow τ$ decays in $2.3 \times 10^8$ proton interactions in tungsten target to study the differential production cross section of $D_s$ mesons. To achieve this, state-of-the-art emulsion detectors with a nanometric-precision readout will be used. The data generated by this project will enable the $ν_τ$ cross section from DONUT to be re-evaluated, and this should significantly reduce the total systematic uncertainty. Furthermore, these results will provide essential data for future $ν_τ$ experiments such as the $ν_τ$ program in the SHiP project at CERN. In addition, the analysis of $2.3 \times 10^8$ proton interactions, combined with the expected high yield of $10^5$ charmed decays as by-products, will enable the extraction of additional physical quantities.

Energy dependence of positive kaon to pion and negative kaon to pion show different behavior in case of UrQMD and DPMJET III model. The presence of the horn like structure in the variation of positive kaon to pion and negative kaon to pion ratio with energy for the experimental data is supported by the DPMJET III model. Experimentally it has been observed that as energy increases, the total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio increases systematically for pp collisions at lower energies and becomes independent of energy in LHC energy regime. Our analysis on total kaon to pion multiplicity ratio with UrQMD data is well supported by the experimental results obtained by different collaborations in different times. In case of DPMJET III data, the saturation of kaon to pion ratio at LHC region has not been observed.

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process.
For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections.
The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

We investigate a possible new method of separating interactions of electromagnetic origin. We provide the values of several parameters evaluated in a sample selected using the classical method, and the method proposed in this paper.

The technique of nuclear track emulsions is used to explore the fragmentation of light relativistic nuclei down to the most peripheral interactions - nuclear "white" stars. A complete pattern of therelativistic dissociation of a $^8$B nucleus with target fragment accompaniment is presented. Relativistic dissociation $^{9}$Be$\to2α$ is explored using significant statistics and a relative contribution of $^{8}$Be decays from 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ states is established. Target fragment accompaniments are shown for relativistic fragmentation $^{14}$N$\to$3He+H and $^{22}$Ne$\to$5He. The leading role of the electromagnetic dissociation on heavy nuclei with respect to break-ups on target protons is demonstrated in all these cases. It is possible to conclude that the peripheral dissociation of relativistic nuclei in nuclear track emulsion is a unique tool to study many-body systems composed of lightest nuclei and nucleons in the energy scale relevant for nuclear astrophysics.

The fragmentation was analyzed by means of an invariant approach. The momentum and correlation characteristics of $α$ particles for the $^{14}$N$\to3α$+X channel in the laboratory system and the rest systems of 3$α$ particles were considered.
The results obtained for the $^{14}$N nucleus are compared with similar data for the $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O nuclei.

In the present paper, experimental observations of the multifragmentation processes of light relativistic nuclei carried out by means of emulsions are reviewed. Events of the type of "white" stars in which the dissociation of relativistic nuclei is not accompanied by the production of mesons and the target-nucleus fragments are considered.
A distinctive feature of the charge topology in the dissociation of the Ne, Mg, Si, and S nuclei is an almost total suppression of the binary splitting of nuclei to fragments with charges higher than 2. The growth of the nuclear fragmentation degree is revealed in an increase in the multiplicity of singly and doubly charged fragments with decreasing charge of the non-excited part of the fragmenting nucleus.
The processes of dissociation of stable Li, Be, B, C, N, and O isotopes to charged fragments were used to study special features of the formation of systems consisting of the lightest $α$, d, and t nuclei. Clustering in form of the $^3$He nucleus can be detected in "white" stars via the dissociation of neutron-deficient Be, B, C, and N isotopes.

The results of investigations dealing with the charge topology of the fragments produced in peripheral dissociation of relativistic $^8$B nuclei in emulsion are presented. 55 events of peripheral dissociation of the $^8$B nucleus were selected from the events which do not involve the production of the target-nucleus fragments and mesons (`` white\rq\rq ~stars). A leading contribution of the $^8$B$\to^7$Be+p mode having the lowest energy threshold was revealed on the basis of those events. Information on the relative probability of dissociation modes with a larger multiplicity was obtained. The dissociation of a $^7$Be core in $^8$B indicates an analogy with that of the free $^7$Be nucleus.\par The transverse momentum distributions of the fragments from the $^8$B$\to^7$Be+p dissociation mode were obtained. Their small average value, $<$P$_t>$= 52 MeV/c, in the c.m.s. suggests a low binding energy of the external proton in the $^8$B nucleus.
An indication for a strong azimuthal correlation of the $^7$Be and p fragments was got.

We give an overview of results and prospects of nuclear clustering studies on the grounds of the observations of interactions of light stable and radioactive nuclei with an initial energy above 1 A GeV in nuclear emulsions. Thank to the best spatial resolution and the full solid angle acceptance provided by nuclear emulsions, such an approach allows one to obtain unique and evident observations reecting cluster-like features in light nuclear structures. New results on dissociation of $^7$Be in very peripheral interactions with emulsion nuclei are presented. The importance of this research for the physics of few body nuclear systems and the related problems of nucleosynthesis is noted. The paper is illustrated with characteristic images obtained by means of a microscope equipped with a CCD camera. The discussed explorations are provided with the beams of the Synchrophasotron and Nuclotron of JINR, Dubna. Future investigations are suggested to be carried out in relativistic beams of He, Be, B, C, and N isotopes.

The relativistic invariant approach is applied to analyzing the 3.3 A GeV $^{22}$Ne fragmentation in a nuclear track emulsion. New results on few-body dissociations have been obtained from the emulsion exposures to 2.1 A GeV $^{14}$N and 1.2 A GeV $^{9}$Be nuclei. It can be asserted that the use of the invariant approach is an effective means of obtaining conclusions about the behavior of systems involving a few He nuclei at a relative energy close to 1 MeV per nucleon. The first observations of fragmentation of 1.2 A GeV $^{8}$B and $^{9}$C nuclei in emulsion are described. The presented results allow one to justify the development of few-body aspects of nuclear astrophysics.
