Practical Benchmarking of Randomized Measurement Methods for Quantum Chemistry Hamiltonians
Abstract: Many hybrid quantum-classical algorithms for the application of ground state energy estimation in quantum chemistry involve estimating the expectation value of a molecular Hamiltonian with respect to a quantum state through measurements on a quantum device. To guide the selection of measurement methods designed for this observable estimation problem, we propose a benchmark called CSHOREBench (Comm… ▽ More

Approximate Solutions of Combinatorial Problems via Quantum Relaxations
Abstract: Combinatorial problems are formulated to find optimal designs within a fixed set of constraints. They are commonly found across diverse engineering and scientific domains. Understanding how to best use quantum computers for combinatorial optimization is to date an open problem. Here we propose new methods for producing approximate solutions for the maximum cut problem and its weighted version, whi… ▽ More

Second-quantized fermionic operators with polylogarithmic qubit and gate complexity
Abstract: We present a method for encoding second-quantized fermionic systems in qubits when the number of fermions is conserved, as in the electronic structure problem. When the number $F$ of fermions is much smaller than the number $M$ of modes, this symmetry reduces the number of information-theoretically required qubits from $Θ(M)$ to $O(F\log M)$. In this limit, our encoding requires $O(F^2\log^4 M)$ q… ▽ More

Adaptive Pauli Shadows for Energy Estimation
Abstract: Locally-biased classical shadows allow rapid estimation of energies of quantum Hamiltonians. Recently, derandomised classical shadows have emerged claiming to be even more accurate. This accuracy comes at a cost of introducing classical computing resources into the energy estimation procedure. This present note shows, by adding a fraction of this classical computing resource to the locally-biased… ▽ More

Decision Diagrams for Quantum Measurements with Shallow Circuits
Abstract: We consider the problem of estimating quantum observables on a collection of qubits, given as a linear combination of Pauli operators, with shallow quantum circuits consisting of single-qubit rotations. We introduce estimators based on randomised measurements, which use decision diagrams to sample from probability distributions on measurement bases. This approach generalises previously known unifo… ▽ More

Doubling the size of quantum simulators by entanglement forging
Abstract: Quantum computers are promising for simulations of chemical and physical systems, but the limited capabilities of today's quantum processors permit only small, and often approximate, simulations. Here we present a method, classical entanglement forging, that harnesses classical resources to capture quantum correlations and double the size of the system that can be simulated on quantum hardware. Measurements of Quantum Hamiltonians with Locally-Biased Classical Shadows
Abstract: Obtaining precise estimates of quantum observables is a crucial step of variational quantum algorithms. We consider the problem of estimating expectation values of molecular Hamiltonians, obtained on states prepared on a quantum computer. We propose a novel estimator for this task, which is locally optimised with knowledge of the Hamiltonian and a classical approximation to the underlying quantum… ▽ More

Spectral theory of the frame flow on hyperbolic 3-manifolds (with an appendix by Charles Hadfield)
Abstract: We study the spectral theory and the resolvent of the vector field generating the frame flow of closed hyperbolic 3-dimensional manifolds on some family of anisotropic Sobolev spaces. We show the existence of a spectral gap and prove resolvent estimates using semiclassical methods.

Ruelle zeta function from field theory
Abstract: We propose a field-theoretic interpretation of Ruelle zeta function, and show how it can be seen as the partition function for $BF$ theory when an unusual gauge fixing condition on contact manifolds is imposed. This suggests an alternative rephrasing of a conjecture due to Fried on the equivalence between Ruelle zeta function and analytic torsion, in terms of homotopies of Lagrangian submanifolds.

Zeta Function at Zero for Surfaces with Boundary
Abstract: We study the Ruelle zeta function at zero for negatively curved oriented surfaces with boundary. At zero, the zeta function has a zero and its multiplicity is shown to be determined by the Euler characteristic of the surface. This is shown by considering certain Ruelle resonances and identifying their multiplicity with dimensions of the relative cohomology of the surface.

Ruelle and Quantum Resonances for Open Hyperbolic Manifolds
Abstract: We establish a direct classical-quantum correspondence on convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds between the spectrums of the geodesic flow and the Laplacian acting on natural tensor bundles. This extends previous work detailing the correspondence for cocompact quotients.

Local Geometry of Even Clifford Structures on Conformal Manifolds
Abstract: We introduce the concept of a Clifford-Weyl structure on a conformal manifold, which consists of an even Clifford structure parallel with respect to the tensor product of a metric connection on the Clifford bundle and a Weyl structure on the manifold. We show that the Weyl structure is necessarily closed except for some "generic" low-dimensional instances, where explicit examples of non-closed Cli… ▽ More

Resonances for Symmetric Tensors on Asymptotically Hyperbolic Spaces
Abstract: On manifolds with an even Riemannian conformally compact Einstein metric, the resolvent of the Lichnerowicz Laplacian, acting on trace-free, divergence-free, symmetric 2-tensors is shown to have a meromorphic continuation to the complex plane, defining quantum resonances of this Laplacian. For higher rank symmetric tensors, a similar result is proven for (convex cocompact) quotients of hyperbolic… ▽ More

Twistor Spaces of Riemannian Manifolds with Even Clifford Structures
Abstract: In this paper we introduce the twistor space of a Riemannian manifold with an even Clifford structure. This notion generalizes the twistor space of quaternion-Hermitian manifolds and weak-Spin(9) structures. We also construct almost complex structures on the twistor space for parallel even Clifford structures and check their integrability. Moreover, we prove that in some cases one can give Kähler… ▽ More
