We consider smooth vector bundles over smooth manifolds equipped with non-smooth geometric data. For nilpotent differential operators acting on these bundles, we show that the kernels of induced Hodge-Dirac-type operators remain isomorphic under uniform perturbations of the geometric data. We consider applications of this to the Hodge-Dirac operator on differential forms induced by so-called rough Riemannian metrics, which can be of only measurable coefficient in regularity, on both compact and non-compact settings. As a consequence, we show that the kernel of the associated non-smooth Hodge-Dirac operator with respect to a rough Riemannian metric remains isomorphic to smooth and singular cohomology when the underlying manifold is compact.

The task of Visual Place Recognition (VPR) is to predict the location of a query image from a database of geo-tagged images. Recent studies in VPR have highlighted the significant advantage of employing pre-trained foundation models like DINOv2 for the VPR task. However, these models are often deemed inadequate for VPR without further fine-tuning on task-specific data. In this paper, we propose a simple yet powerful approach to better exploit the potential of a foundation model for VPR. We first demonstrate that features extracted from self-attention layers can serve as a powerful re-ranker for VPR. Utilizing these features in a zero-shot manner, our method surpasses previous zero-shot methods and achieves competitive results compared to supervised methods across multiple datasets. Subsequently, we demonstrate that a single-stage method leveraging internal ViT layers for pooling can generate global features that achieve state-of-the-art results, even when reduced to a dimensionality as low as 128D. Nevertheless, incorporating our local foundation features for re-ranking, expands this gap. Our approach further demonstrates remarkable robustness and generalization, achieving state-of-the-art results, with a significant gap, in challenging scenarios, involving occlusion, day-night variations, and seasonal changes.

Biomedical image analysis is of paramount importance for the advancement of healthcare and medical research. Although conventional convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are frequently employed in this domain, facing limitations in capturing intricate spatial and temporal relationships at the pixel level due to their reliance on fixed-sized windows and immutable filter weights post-training. These constraints impede their ability to adapt to input fluctuations and comprehend extensive long-range contextual information. To overcome these challenges, a novel architecture based on self-attention mechanisms as an alternative to conventional CNNs.The proposed model utilizes attention-based mechanisms to surpass the limitations of CNNs. The key component of our strategy is the combination of non-overlap** (vanilla patching) and novel overlapped Shifted Patching Techniques (S.P.T.s), which enhances the model's capacity to capture local context and improves generalization. Additionally, we introduce the Lancoz5 interpolation technique, which adapts variable image sizes to higher resolutions, facilitating better analysis of high-resolution biomedical images. Our methods address critical challenges faced by attention-based vision models, including inductive bias, weight sharing, receptive field limitations, and efficient data handling. Experimental evidence shows the effectiveness of proposed model in generalizing to various biomedical imaging tasks. The attention-based model, combined with advanced data augmentation methodologies, exhibits robust modeling capabilities and superior performance compared to existing approaches. The integration of S.P.T.s significantly enhances the model's ability to capture local context, while the Lancoz5 interpolation technique ensures efficient handling of high-resolution images.

Batch Normalization is an important approach to advancing deep learning since it allows multiple networks to train simultaneously. A problem arises when normalizing along the batch dimension because B.N.'s error increases significantly as batch size shrinks because batch statistics estimates are inaccurate. As a result, computer vision tasks like detection, segmentation, and video, which require tiny batches based on memory consumption, aren't suitable for using Batch Normalization for larger model training and feature transfer. Here, we explore Group Normalization as an easy alternative to using Batch Normalization A Group Normalization is a channel normalization method in which each group is divided into different channels, and the corresponding mean and variance are calculated for each group. Group Normalization computations are accurate across a wide range of batch sizes and are independent of batch size. When trained using a large ImageNet database on ResNet-50, GN achieves a very low error rate of 10.6% compared to Batch Normalization. when a smaller batch size of only 2 is used. For usual batch sizes, the performance of G.N. is comparable to that of Batch Normalization, but at the same time, it outperforms other normalization techniques. Implementing Group Normalization as a direct alternative to B.N to combat the serious challenges faced by the Batch Normalization in deep learning models with comparable or improved classification accuracy. Additionally, Group Normalization can be naturally transferred from the pre-training to the fine-tuning phase. .

This study proposes a physics-informed convolutional neural network (CNN) for identifying dynamical systems' time series near a fold bifurcation. The peculiarity of this work is that the CNN is trained with a relatively small amount of data and on a single, very simple system. In contrast, the CNN is validated on much more complicated systems. A similar task requires significant extrapolation capabilities, which are obtained by exploiting physics-based information. Physics-based information is provided through a specific pre-processing of the input data, consisting mostly of a transformation into polar coordinates, normalization, transformation into the logarithmic scale, and filtering through a moving mean. The results illustrate that such data pre-processing enables the CNN to grasp the important features related to approaching a fold bifurcation, namely, the trend of the oscillation amplitude, and neglect other characteristics that are not particularly relevant, such as the vibration frequency. The developed CNN was able to correctly classify trajectories near a fold for a mass-on-moving-belt system, a van der Pol-Duffing oscillator with an attached tuned mass damper, and a pitch-and-plunge wing profile. The results obtained pave the way for the development of similar CNNs effective in real-life applications.

With the rapid development of computer vision, Vision Transformers (ViTs) offer the tantalizing prospect of unified information processing across visual and textual domains. But due to the lack of inherent inductive biases in ViTs, they require enormous amount of data for training. To make their applications practical, we introduce an innovative ensemble-based distillation approach distilling inductive bias from complementary lightweight teacher models. Prior systems relied solely on convolution-based teaching. However, this method incorporates an ensemble of light teachers with different architectural tendencies, such as convolution and involution, to instruct the student transformer jointly. Because of these unique inductive biases, instructors can accumulate a wide range of knowledge, even from readily identifiable stored datasets, which leads to enhanced student performance. Our proposed framework also involves precomputing and storing logits in advance, essentially the unnormalized predictions of the model. This optimization can accelerate the distillation process by eliminating the need for repeated forward passes during knowledge distillation, significantly reducing the computational burden and enhancing efficiency.

Gait Recognition is a computer vision task aiming to identify people by their walking patterns. Although existing methods often show high performance on specific datasets, they lack the ability to generalize to unseen scenarios. Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) tries to adapt a model, pre-trained in a supervised manner on a source domain, to an unlabelled target domain. There are only a few works on UDA for gait recognition proposing solutions to limited scenarios. In this paper, we reveal a fundamental phenomenon in adaptation of gait recognition models, caused by the bias in the target domain to viewing angle or walking direction. We then suggest a remedy to reduce this bias with a novel triplet selection strategy combined with curriculum learning. To this end, we present Gait Orientation-based method for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (GOUDA). We provide extensive experiments on four widely-used gait datasets, CASIA-B, OU-MVLP, GREW, and Gait3D, and on three backbones, GaitSet, GaitPart, and GaitGL, justifying the view bias and showing the superiority of our proposed method over prior UDA works.

The robustness of dynamical systems against external perturbations is crucial in engineering; however, it is often overlooked for the lack of methods for rapidly computing it. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for estimating the robustness of systems subject to time delay. More precisely, the algorithm iteratively estimates the so-called local integrity measure (LIM), that is, the radius of the largest hypersphere centered at the fixed point and located within its basin of attraction. Since time-delayed systems are infinite dimensional, initial conditions are restricted to a constrained type of initial functions. The semi-discretization method is used for rapidly simulating the dynamics of the systems, while trajectories are classified as converging or diverging using a subdivision of the reduced phase space into cells. The algorithm was tested on four different mechanical systems, and in all cases it very quickly provided an accurate estimation of the LIM. Moreover, it enabled the study of LIM trends in a multi-dimensional parameter space, which would have been unfeasible with alternative methods. This breakthrough in computational efficiency has important implications for engineering design, allowing for careful consideration of dynamical integrity and enhancing the safety and reliability of engineered systems, especially in the presence of time delays.

This formula is expressed in terms of another local density built from the symbol of the logarithm of a limit of rescaled differential operators acting on differential forms. When applied to complex powers of the square of a Dirac operator, it amounts to expressing the index of a Dirac operator in terms of a local density involving the logarithm of the Getzler rescaled limit of its square.

In Natural Language Processing (NLP), Transformers have already revolutionized the field by utilizing an attention-based encoder-decoder model. Recently, some pioneering works have employed Transformer-like architectures in Computer Vision (CV) and they have reported outstanding performance of these architectures in tasks such as image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation. Vision Transformers (ViTs) have demonstrated impressive performance improvements over Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) due to their competitive modelling capabilities. However, these architectures demand massive computational resources which makes these models difficult to be deployed in the resource-constrained applications. Many solutions have been developed to combat this issue, such as compressive transformers and compression functions such as dilated convolution, min-max pooling, 1D convolution, etc. Model compression has recently attracted considerable research attention as a potential remedy. A number of model compression methods have been proposed in the literature such as weight quantization, weight multiplexing, pruning and Knowledge Distillation (KD). However, techniques like weight quantization, pruning and weight multiplexing typically involve complex pipelines for performing the compression. KD has been found to be a simple and much effective model compression technique that allows a relatively simple model to perform tasks almost as accurately as a complex model. This paper discusses various approaches based upon KD for effective compression of ViT models. The paper elucidates the role played by KD in reducing the computational and memory requirements of these models. The paper also presents the various challenges faced by ViTs that are yet to be resolved.

Mammography and ultrasound are extensively used by radiologists as complementary modalities to achieve better performance in breast cancer diagnosis. However, existing computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for the breast are generally based on a single modality. In this work, we propose a deep-learning based method for classifying breast cancer lesions from their respective mammography and ultrasound images. We present various approaches and show a consistent improvement in performance when utilizing both modalities. The proposed approach is based on a GoogleNet architecture, fine-tuned for our data in two training steps. First, a distinct neural network is trained separately for each modality, generating high-level features. Then, the aggregated features originating from each modality are used to train a multimodal network to provide the final classification. In quantitative experiments, the proposed approach achieves an AUC of 0.94, outperforming state-of-the-art models trained over a single modality. Moreover, it performs similarly to an average radiologist, surpassing two out of four radiologists participating in a reader study. The promising results suggest that the proposed method may become a valuable decision support tool for breast radiologists.

Given a compact Riemannian manifold (M n , g) with boundary $\partial$M , we give an estimate for the quotient $\partial$M f d$μ$ g M f d$μ$ g , where f is a smooth positive function defined on M that satisfies some inequality involving the scalar Laplacian. By the mean value lemma established in [37], we provide a differential inequality for f which, under some curvature assumptions, can be interpreted in terms of Bessel functions. As an application of our main result, a direct proof is given of the Faber-Krahn inequalities for Dirichlet and Robin Laplacian. Also, a new estimate is established for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator that involves a positive root of Bessel function besides the scalar curvature. Independently, we extend the Robin Laplacian on functions to differential forms. We prove that this natural extension defines a self-adjoint and elliptic operator whose spectrum is discrete and consists of positive real eigenvalues. Given a smooth foliation on a closed manifold, basic forms are differential forms that can be expressed locally in terms of the transverse variables. The space of basic forms yields a differential complex, because the exterior derivative fixes this set. The basic cohomology is the cohomology of this complex, and this has been studied extensively. Given a Riemannian metric, the adjoint of the exterior derivative maps the orthogonal complement of the basic forms to itself, and we call the resulting cohomology the "antibasic cohomology". Although these groups are defined using the metric, the dimensions of the antibasic cohomology groups are invariant under diffeomorphism and metric changes. If the underlying foliation is Riemannian, the groups are foliated homotopy invariants that are independent of basic cohomology and ordinary cohomology of the manifold. For this class of foliations we use the codifferential on antibasic forms to obtain the corresponding Laplace operator, develop its analytic properties, and prove a Hodge theorem. We then find some topological and geometric properties that impose restrictions on the antibasic Betti numbers.

A bistable nonlinear energy sink conceived to mitigate the vibrations of host structural systems is considered in this paper. The hosting structure consists of two coupled symmetric linear oscillators (LOs) and the nonlinear energy sink (NES) is connected to one of them. The peculiar nonlinear dynamics of the resulting three-degree-of-freedom system is analytically described by means of its slow invariant manifold derived from a suitable rescaling, coupled with a harmonic balance procedure, applied to the governing equations transformed in modal coordinates. On the basis of the first-order reduced model, the absorber is tuned and optimized to mitigate both modes for a broad range of impulsive load magnitudes applied to the LOs. On the one hand, for low-amplitude, in-well, oscillations, the parameters governing the bistable NES are tuned in order to make it functioning as a linear tuned mass damper (TMD); on the other, for high-amplitude, cross-well, oscillations, the absorber is optimized on the basis of the invariant manifolds features. The analytically predicted performance of the resulting tuned bistable nonlinear energy sink (TBNES) are numerically validated in terms of dissipation time; the absorption capabilities are eventually compared with either a TMD and a purely cubic NES. It is shown that, for a wide range of impulse amplitudes, the TBNES allows the most efficient absorption even for the detuned mode, where a single TMD cannot be effective.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are a promising approach for text generation that, unlike traditional language models (LM), does not suffer from the problem of ``exposure bias''. However, A major hurdle for understanding the potential of GANs for text generation is the lack of a clear evaluation metric. In this work, we propose to approximate the distribution of text generated by a GAN, which permits evaluating them with traditional probability-based LM metrics. We apply our approximation procedure on several GAN-based models and show that they currently perform substantially worse than state-of-the-art LMs. Our evaluation procedure promotes better understanding of the relation between GANs and LMs, and can accelerate progress in GAN-based text generation.

In this paper, we consider a Riemannian manifold (M, g) endowed with a Riemannian flow and we study the curvature term in the Bochner-Weitzenb{ö}ck formula of the basic Laplacian on M. We prove that this term splits into two parts. The first part depends mainly on the curvature operator of the underlying manifold M and the second part is expressed in terms of the O'Neill tensor of the flow. After getting a lower bound for this term, depending on these two parts, we establish an eigenvalue estimate of the basic Laplacian on basic forms. We then discuss the limiting case of the estimate and prove that when equality occurs, the manifold M is a local product. This paper follows mainly the approach in [21].

On a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary, we give an estimate for the eigenvalues $(λ\_k(τ,α))\_k$ of the magnetic Laplacian with the Robin boundary conditions. Here, $τ$ is a positive number that defines the Robin condition and $α$ is a real differential 1-form on $M$ that represents the magnetic field. We express these estimates in terms of the mean curvature of the boundary, the parameter $τ$ and a lower bound of the Ricci curvature of $M$ (see Theorem \ref{estimate1} and Corollary \ref{corestimate}). The main technique is to use the Bochner formula established in \cite{ELMP} for the magnetic Laplacian and to integrate it over $M$ (see Theorem \ref{bochnermagnetic1}). In the last part, we compare the eigenvalues $λ\_k(τ,α)$ with the first eigenvalue $λ\_1(τ)=λ\_1(τ,0)$ (i.e. without magnetic field) and the Neumann eigenvalues $λ\_k(0,α)$ (see Theorem \ref{thm:comp}) using the min-max principle.

We study the properties of the Volterra and Cesàro operators viewed on the $L^1$-Müntz space $M_Λ^1$ with range in the space of continuous functions. These operators are neither compact nor weakly compact. We estimate how far from being (weakly) compact they are by computing their (generalized) essential norm. It turns out that this latter does not depend on $Λ$ and is equal to $1/2$.

Bifurcation theory and continuation methods are well-established tools for the analysis of nonlinear mechanical systems subject to periodic forcing. We illustrate the added value and the complementary information provided by singularity theory with one distinguished parameter. While tracking bifurcations reveals the qualitative changes in the behaviour, tracking singularities reveals how structural changes are themselves organised in parameter space. The complementarity of that information is demonstrated in the analysis of detached resonance curves in a two-degree-of-freedom system.

This paper develops a principle of similarity for the design of a nonlinear absorber, the nonlinear tuned vibration absorber (NLTVA), attached to a nonlinear primary system. Specifically, for effective vibration mitigation, we show that the NLTVA should feature a nonlinearity possessing the same mathematical form as that of the primary system. A compact analytical formula for the nonlinear coefficient of the absorber is then derived. The formula, valid for any polynomial nonlinearity in the primary system, is found to depend only on the mass ratio and on the nonlinear coefficient of the primary system. When the primary system comprises several polynomial nonlinearities, we demonstrate that the NLTVA obeys a principle of additivity, i.e., each nonlinear coefficient can be calculated independently of the other nonlinear coefficients using the proposed formula.

The nonlinear tuned vibration absorber (NLTVA) is a recently-developed nonlinear absorber which generalizes Den Hartog's equal peak method to nonlinear systems. If the purposeful introduction of nonlinearity can enhance system performance, it can also give rise to adverse dynamical phenomena, including detached resonance curves and quasiperiodic regimes of motion. Through the combination of numerical continuation of periodic solutions, bifurcation detection and tracking, and global analysis, the present study identifies boundaries in the NLTVA parameter space delimiting safe, unsafe and unacceptable operations. The sensitivity of these boundaries to uncertainty in the NLTVA parameters is also investigated.

We prove a Weitzenbock formula involving complex basic forms on Kähler foliations and we apply this formula for pointing out some properties of transverse Calabi-Yau structures. This allows us to prove that links provide examples of compact simply-connected contact Calabi-Yau manifolds. Moreover, we show that a simply-connected compact manifold with a Kähler foliation admits a transverse hyper- Kähler structure if and only if it admits a compatible transverse hyper-Hermitian structure. This latter result is the "foliated version" of a theorem proved by Verbitsky. In the last part of the paper we adapt our results to the Sasakian case, showing in addition that a compact Sasakian manifold has trivial transverse holonomy if and only if it is a compact quotient of the Heisenberg Lie group.
