Radiation hardness of ultrabroadband spintronic terahertz emitters: en-route to a space-qualified terahertz time-domain gas spectrometer
Abstract: The radiation hardness of ultrabroadband, spintronic terahertz emitters against gamma and proton irradiation is investigated. We find that irradiation doses equivalent to those experienced by a space instrument en-route to and operated on Mars have a minor effect on the performance of the emitter. In particular, the ultrawide emission spectrum 0.1-30 THz, which covers a large part of the vibration… ▽ More

External Energy Paradigm For Black Holes
Abstract: A new paradigm for black holes is introduced. It is known as the External Energy Paradigm. The paradigm asserts that all energies of a black hole are external quantities; they are absent inside the horizon. These energies include constituent mass, gravitational energy, electrostatic energy, rotational energy, heat energy, etc. As a result, quantum particles with charges and spins cannot exist insi… ▽ More

Weighing the Black Hole via Quasi-local Energy
Abstract: We set to weigh the black holes at their event horizons in various spacetimes and obtain masses which are substantially higher than their asymptotic values. In each case, the horizon mass of a Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m, or Kerr black hole is found to be twice the irreducible mass observed at infinity. The irreducible mass does not contain electrostatic or rotational energy, leading to th… ▽ More

The Horizon Energy of a Black Hole
Abstract: We investigate the energy distribution of a black hole in various spacetimes as reckoned by a distant observer using the quasi-local energy approach. In each case the horizon mass of a black hole: neutral, charged or rotating, is found to be twice the irreducible mass observed at infinity. This is known as the Horizon Mass Theorem. As a consequence, the electrostatic energy and the rotational ener… ▽ More

Weighing The Black Holes Of GW150914
Abstract: We evaluate the mass of the black holes of GW150914 at their event horizons via quasi-local energy approach and obtain the values of 71 and 57 solar masses, compared to their asymptotic values of 36 and 29 units, respectively, as reported by LIGO. A higher mass at the event horizon is compulsory in order to overcome the huge negative gravitational potential energy surrounding the black holes and a… ▽ More

Bosonization and Lie Group Structure
Abstract: We introduce a concise quantum operator formula for bosonization in which the Lie group structure appears in a natural way. The connection between fermions and bosons is found to be exactly the connection between Lie group elements and the group parameters. Bosonization is an extraordinary way of expressing the equation of motion of a complex fermion field in terms of a real scalar boson in two di… ▽ More

Symmetries in Bosonization
Abstract: Two-dimensional quantum field theories are important in many problems in physics because they contain exact symmetries and are often completely integrable. We demonstrate the power of bosonization in elucidating the structure of a multi-component fermion theory with chiral and internal symmetries. Many remarkable features and quantum symmetries in such a system are most readily uncovered in the bo… ▽ More

An Underlying Theory for Gravity
Abstract: A new direction to understand gravity has recently been explored by considering classical gravity to be a derived interaction from an underlying theory. This underlying theory would involve new degrees of freedom at a deeper level and it would be structurally different from classical gravitation. It may conceivably be a quantum theory or a non-quantum theory. The relation between this underlying t… ▽ More

Severe Challenges In Gravity Theories
Abstract: Gravity is specifically the attractive force between two masses separated at a distance. Is this force a derived or a fundamental interaction? We believe that all fundamental interactions are quantum in nature but a derived interaction may be classical. Severe challenges have appeared in many quantum theories of gravity. None of these theories has thus far attained its goal in quantizing gravity a… ▽ More

Is There Unification in the 21st Century?
Abstract: In the last 100 years, the most important equations in physics are Maxwell's equations for electrodynamics, Einstein's equation for gravity, Dirac's equation for the electron and Yang-Mills equation for elementary particles. Do these equations follow a common principle and come from a single theory? Despite intensive efforts to unify gravity and the particle interactions in the last 30 years, the… ▽ More

Are Black Holes Elementary Particles?
Abstract: Quantum black holes are the smallest and heaviest conceivable elementary particles. They have a microscopic size but a macroscopic mass. Several fundamental types have been constructed with some remarkable properties. Quantum black holes in the neighborhood of the Galaxy could resolve the paradox of ultra-high energy cosmic rays detected in Earth's atmosphere. They may also play a role as dark m… ▽ More

Quantum Black Holes As Elementary Particles
Abstract: Are black holes elementary particles? Are they fermions or bosons? We investigate the remarkable possibility that quantum black holes are the smallest and heaviest elementary particles. We are able to construct various fundamental quantum black holes: the spin-0, spin 1/2, spin-1, and the Planck-charge cases, using the results in general relativity. Quantum black holes in the neighborhood of the… ▽ More

A new theorem for black holes
Abstract: A new theorem for black holes is established. The mass of a black hole depends on where the observer is. The horizon mass theorem states that for all black holes: neutral, charged or rotating, the horizon mass is always twice the irreducible mass observed at infinity. The horizon mass theorem is crucial for understanding the occurrence of Hawking radiation. Without black hole radiation, the Seco… ▽ More

The Gravitational Energy of a Black Hole
Abstract: An exact energy expression for a physical black hole is derived by considering the escape of a photon from the black hole. The mass of the black hole within its horizon is found to be twice its mass as observed at infinity. This result is important in understanding gravitational waves in black hole collisions.

Coupling of Gravity to Matter via SO(3,2) Gauge Fields
Abstract: We consider gravity from the quantum field theory point of view and introduce a natural way of coupling gravity to matter by following the gauge principle for particle interactions. The energy-momentum tensor for the matter fields is shown to be conserved and follows as a consequence of the dynamics in a spontaneously broken SO(3,2) gauge theory of gravity. All known interactions are described b… ▽ More
