We report measurements of the dissipation in the Superfluid Helium high REynold number von Karman flow (SHREK) experiment for different forcing conditions, through a regime of global hysteretic bifurcation. Our macroscopical measurements indicate no noticeable difference between the classical fluid and the superfluid regimes, thereby providing evidence of the same dissipative anomaly and response to asymmetry in fluid and superfluid regime. %In the latter case, A detailed study of the variations of the hysteretic cycle with Reynolds number supports the idea that (i) the stability of the bifurcated states of classical turbulence in this closed flow is partly governed by the dissipative scales and (ii) the normal and the superfluid component at these temperatures (1.6K) are locked down to the dissipative length scale.

Abstract:
We present velocity spectra measured in three cryogenic liquid 4He steady flows: grid and wake flows in a pressurized wind tunnel capable of achieving mean velocities up to 5 m/s at temperatures above and below the superfluid transition, down to 1.7 K, and a "chunk" turbulence flow at 1.55 K, capable of sustaining mean superfluid velocities up to 1.3 m/s. Depending on the flows, the stagnation pre…

Depending on the flows, the stagnation pressure probes used for anemometry are resolving from one to two decades of the inertial regime of the turbulent cascade. We do not find any evidence that the second order statistics of turbulence below the superfluid transition differ from the ones of classical turbulence, above the transition.

Abstract:
In a recent preprint (cond-mat/0601398), D. Funfschilling and G. Ahlers describe a new effect, that they interpret as non-Boussinesq, in a convection cell working with ethane, near its critical point. They argue that such an effect could have spoiled the Chavanne {\it et al.} (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 79} 3648, 1997) results, and not the Niemela {\it et al.} (Nature, {\bf 404}, 837, 2000) ones, whi…

We show that:-i)Restricting the Chavanne's data to situations as far from the critical point than the Niemela's one, the same discrepancy remains.-ii)The helium data of Chavanne show no indication of the effect observed by D. Funfschilling and G. Ahlers.

Ultimate Regime of Convection: robustness to poor thermal properties of the plates

Abstract:
A transition to Kraichnan ultimate regime of convection has been reported in very high Rayleigh numbers experiments, but not in all of them. These apparently contradictory results can be explained by a recent phenomenological model which accounts for the non-ideality of the plate thermal properties [Chillà et al, Physics of Fluids 16:2452 (2004)]. In this paper, we present a direct test of this…

These apparently contradictory results can be explained by a recent phenomenological model which accounts for the non-ideality of the plate thermal properties [Chillà et al, Physics of Fluids 16:2452 (2004)]. In this paper, we present a direct test of this model, using a low conductivity plate. We found an unaltered transition, not compatible with the model's predictions.

A Rayleigh-Bénard cell has been designed to explore the Prandtl (Pr) dependence of turbulent convection in the cross-over range $0.7<Pr<21$ and for the full range of soft and hard turbulences, up to Rayleigh number $Ra\simeq 10^{11}$. The set-up benefits from the favourable characteristics of cryogenic helium-4 in fluid mechanics, in-situ fluid property measurements, and special care on thermometry and calorimetric instrumentation. The cell is cylindrical with $diameter/height=0.5$. The effective heat transfer $Nu(Ra,Pr)$ has been measured with unprecedented accuracy for cryogenic turbulent convection experiments in this range of Rayleigh numbers. Spin-off of this study include improved fits of helium thermodynamics and viscosity properties. Three main results were found. First the $Nu(Ra)$ dependence exhibits a bimodality of the flow with $4-7 %$ difference in $Nu$ for given $Ra$ and $Pr$. Second, a systematic study of the side-wall influence reveals a measurable effect on the heat transfer. Third, the $Nu(Pr)$ dependence is very small or null : the absolute value of the average logarithmic slope $(dlnNu/dlnPr)_{Ra}$ is smaller than 0.03 in our range of $Pr$, which allows to disciminate between contradictory experiments [Ashkenazi \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev.Lett. 83:3641 (1999)][Ahlers \textit{et al.}, Phys.Rev.Lett. 86:3320 (2001)].

Abstract:
Transition temperature data obtained as a function of particle density in the $^4$He-Vycor system are compared with recent theoretical calculations for 3D Bose condensed systems. In the low density dilute Bose gas regime we find, in agreement with theory, a positive shift in the transition temperature of the form $ΔT/T_0 = γ(na^{3})^{1/3}$. At higher densities a maximum is found in the ratio of $T_c /T_0$ for a value of the interaction parameter, na$^3$, that is in agreement with path-integral Monte Carlo calculations.
