The magneto-transport properties are systematically measured under c-direction fields up to 33 T for a series of single-crystal films of intercalated iron-selenide superconductor (Li,Fe)OHFeSe. The film samples with varying degree of disorder are grown hydrothermally. We observe a magnetic-field-enhanced shoulder-like feature in the mixed state of the high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe films with weak disorder, while the feature fades away in the films with enhanced disorder. The irreversibility field is significantly suppressed to lower temperatures with the appearance of the shoulder feature. Based on the experiment and model analysis, we establish a new vortex phase diagram for the weakly disordered high-Tc (Li,Fe)OHFeSe, which features an emergent dissipative vortex phase intermediate between the common vortex glass and liquid phases. The reason for the emergence of this intermediate vortex state is further discussed based on related experiments and models.

With molecular beam epitaxy and topotactic chemical reaction, we prepared NdFeAs(O,H) epitaxial thin films with various hydrogen concentrations on 5° vicinal cut MgO substrates. By measuring the resistivities along the longitudinal and transversal directions, the ab plane and the c axis resistivities (\{rho}_ab and \{rho}_c) were obtained. The resistivity anisotropy γ_\{rho}=\{rho}_c \ \{rho}_ab of NdFeAs(O,H) with various hydrogen concentrations was compared with that of NdFeAs(O,F). At the H concentrations which led to superconducting transition temperatures Tc over 40 K, γ_\r{ho} recorded ~100-150 at 50 K. On the other hand, a low γ_\{rho} value of 9 was observed with the mostly doped sample. The exponent \{beta} of the ab plane resistivity obtained by fitting a power law expression \{rho}_{ab}(T)=\{rho}_0+AT^\{beta} to the data was close to unity down to low temperature in the vicinity where the second antiferromagnetic phase locates, which may be related to the quantum critical point discussed at the over-doped side of the phase diagram.

This paper reports the nanoscale texture and microstructure of a high-performance NdFeAs(O,F) superconducting thin film grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a textured MgO/Y$_2$O$_3$/Hastelloy substrate. The NdFeAs(O,F) film forms a highly textured columnar grain structure by epitaxial growth on the MgO template. Although the film contains stacking faults along the $ab$-plane as well as grain boundaries perpendicular to the $ab$-plane, good superconducting properties are measured: a critical temperature, $T _{\rm c}$, of 46 K and a self-field critical current density, $J_{\rm c}$, of $2 \times 10^6 \,{\rm A/cm^2}$ at 4.2 K. Automated crystal orientation map** by scanning precession electron diffraction in transmission electron microscopy is employed to analyze the misorientation angles between adjacent grains in a large ensemble (247 grains). 99% of the grain boundaries show in-plane misorientation angles ($Δγ$) less than the critical angle $θ_{\rm c}$, which satisfies one of the necessary conditions for the high $J_{\rm c}$. Comparing the columnar grain size distribution with the mean distance of the flux line lattice, the triple junctions of low-angle grain boundaries are found to be effective pinning centers, even at high temperatures ($\ge$35 K) and/or low magnetic fields.

The recent realisations of hydrogen doped $Ln$FeAsO ($Ln$=Nd and Sm) superconducting epitaxial thin films call for further investigation of their structural and electrical transport properties. Here, we report on the microstructure of a NdFeAs(O,H) epitaxial thin film and its temperature, field, and orientation dependencies of the resistivity and the critical current density $J_{\rm c}$. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is comparable to NdFeAs(O,F). Transmission electron microscopy investigation supported that hydrogen is homogenously substituted for oxygen. A high self-field $J_{\rm c}$ of over 10 MA/cm$^2$ was recorded at 5 K, which is likely to be caused by a short London penetration depth. The anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau scaling for the angle dependence of $J_{\rm c}$ yielded temperature-dependent scaling parameters $γ_{\rm J}$ that decreased from 1.6 at 30 K to 1.3 at 5 K. This is opposite to the behaviour of NdFeAs(O,F). Additionally, $γ_{\rm J}$ of NdFeAs(O,H) is smaller than that of NdFeAs(O,F). Our results indicate that heavily electron do** by means of hydrogen substitution for oxygen in $Ln$FeAsO is highly beneficial for achieving high $J_{\rm c}$ with low anisotropy without compromising $T_{\rm c}$, which is favourable for high-field magnet applications.

Most commercial high-temperature superconducting coated conductors based on ion beam assisted MgO deposited templates use $\mathrm{LaMnO_3}$ (LMO) films as the terminating buffer layer. In contrast, coated conductors based on inclined substrate deposition (ISD)-MgO technology are still produced with homoepitaxial (homoepi)-MgO as the cap layer. In this work we report on the deposition of LMO buffer layers on ISD-MgO/homoepi-MgO by electron beam physical vapor deposition. The growth parameters of textured LMO films were studied systematically and their properties were optimized regarding the critical current densitiy ($J_\mathrm{c}$) of the subsequently deposited $\mathrm{DyBa_2Cu_3O}_{\mathrm{7-}δ}$ (DyBCO) superconducting films. LMO films without outgrowths at the surface were obtained at growth rates of up to $4\,\mathrm{Å/s}$. Despite the formation of non-stoichiometric LMO films containing $59\,\%$ La, single-phase films were obtained at substrate temperatures below $775^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ and at oxygen partial pressures of up to $4\times10^{-4}\,\mathrm{mbar}$ due to a large homogeneity region towards La. The $J_\mathrm{c}$ values of DyBCO films deposited on LMO were found to be independent of the LMO thickness in a range from $50\,\mathrm{nm}$ to $450\,\mathrm{nm}$. DyBCO films on LMO reach $J_\mathrm{c}=0.83\,\mathrm{MA/cm^2}$ at $77\,\mathrm{K}$ in zero applied field. This value is up to $30\,\%$ higher than those of DyBCO films grown directly on homoepi-MgO. The wide range of LMO growth parameters and higher $J_\mathrm{c}$ values of DyBCO on LMO compared to DyBCO on homoepi-MgO make this material attractive for its use in manufacturing coated conductors based on ISD-MgO technology.

Understanding the nature of grain boundary (GB) characteristics in combination with creating low-energy GBs by modifying the processing conditions, so-called GB engineering, is of great importance for controlling and reducing the defect density, leading to improved functionalities of polycrystalline metals and ceramics. For superconductors particularly, including both low- and high-temperature superconductors, GB engineering has been developed to improve especially the critical current densities, Jc, across these GBs. The intrinsic physical properties of a given superconductor such as the coherence length, the order parameter symmetry, and their anisotropies would determine the strategy of GB engineering. In this topical review, we present an overview of the GB characteristics and GB engineering of Fe-based superconductors (FBS) in the form of polycrystalline bulks and wires, and thin films with application potential, e.g. for high-field magnet wires. Prior to the FBS, GB engineering of the cuprates and MgB2 are also briefly covered.

The discovery of Fe-based superconductors (FBS) as the second class of high-temperature superconducting transition (high-Tc) materials after the cuprates generated a significant impact on the community of fundamental and applied superconductivity research. Whenever a new class of high-Tc superconducting materials is discovered, a lot of effort is devoted to growing single crystals and epitaxial thin films for exploring basic physical quantities. Although several properties of FBS are similar to the cuprates (large upper critical fields, resulting from a short coherence lengths, and small carrier density), others are distinctly different. For instance, in FBS the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter is most likely not a d-wave but an s+-wave, depending on the stoichiometry, crystallographic system, and do** level. Additionally, the critical current densities of FBS are less sensitive to the presence of grain boundaries (GBs) than those of the high-Tc cuprates. These features are highly beneficial for the realization of cheaper conductors for high-field magnets at low temperatures. Indeed, several groups have demonstrated FBS thin films on technical metallic substrates and powder-in-tube processed FBS wires as proof-of-principle studies for conductor applications. FBS on technical substrates also give many opportunities for studying how GB networks affect the critical current and how uniaxial strain impacts the superconducting properties. In this article, we review FBS thin films, especially on technical metallic substrates, and focus on application-relevant properties like pinning improvement by natural and artificial defects as well as the transparency of GBs and GB networks. The recent development of FBS thin films on technical substrates and their superconducting properties are presented and the performance gap with respect to films on single crystals is discussed.

A quantum critical point (QCP) is currently being conjectured for the BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ system at the critical value $x_{\rm c} \approx$ 0.3. In the proximity of a QCP, all thermodynamic and transport properties are expected to scale with a single characteristic energy, given by the quantum fluctuations. Such an universal behavior has not, however, been found in the superconducting upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$. Here we report $H_{\rm c2}$-data for epitaxial thin films extracted from the electrical resistance measured in very high magnetic fields up to 67 Tesla. Using a multi-band analysis we find that $H_{\rm c2}$ is sensitive to the QCP, implying a significant charge carrier effective mass enhancement at the do**-induced QCP that is essentially band-dependent. Our results point to two qualitatively different groups of electrons in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. The first one (possibly associated to hot spots or whole Fermi sheets) has a strong mass enhancement at the QCP, and the second one is insensitive to the QCP. The observed duality could also be present in many other quantum critical systems.

High temperature (high-Tc) superconductors like cuprates have superior critical current properties in magnetic fields over other superconductors. However, superconducting wires for high-field-magnet applications are still dominated by low-Tc Nb3Sn due probably to cost and processing issues. The recent discovery of a second class of high-Tc materials, Fe-based superconductors, may provide another option for high-field-magnet wires. In particular, AEFe2As2 (AE: Alkali earth elements, AE-122) is one of the best candidates for high-field-magnet applications because of its high upper critical field, Hc2, moderate Hc2 anisotropy, and intermediate Tc. Here we report on in-field transport properties of P-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films grown on technical substrates (i.e., biaxially textured oxides templates on metal tapes) by pulsed laser deposition. The P-doped Ba-122 coated conductor sample exceeds a transport Jc of 10^5 A/cm^2 at 15 T for both major crystallographic directions of the applied magnetic field, which is favourable for practical applications. Our P-doped Ba-122 coated conductors show a superior in-field Jc over MgB2 and NbTi, and a comparable level to Nb3Sn above 20 T. By analysing the E-J curves for determining Jc, a non-Ohmic linear differential signature is observed at low field due to flux flow along the grain boundaries. However, grain boundaries work as flux pinning centres as demonstrated by the pinning force analysis.

The Fe-based superconductors (FBS) present a large variety of compounds whose properties are affected to different extents by their crystal structures. Amongst them, the $\it{RE}$FeAs(O,F) ($\it{RE}$1111, where $\it{RE}$ is a rare earth element) is the family with the highest critical temperature $T_c$ but also with a large anisotropy and Josephson vortices as demonstrated in the flux-flow regime in Sm1111 ($T_c$ $\sim$ 55 K). Here we focus our attention on the pinning properties of the lower-$T_c$ Nd1111 in the flux-creep regime. We demonstrate that for H//c critical current density $J_c$ at high temperatures is dominated by point-defect pinning centres, whereas at low temperatures surface pinning by planar defects parallel to the $\it{c}$-axis and vortex shearing prevail. When the field approaches the $\it{ab}$-planes, two different regimes are observed at low temperatures as a consequence of the transition between 3D-Abrikosov and 2D-Josephson vortices: one is determined by the formation of a vortex staircase structure and one by lock-in of the vortices parallel to the layers. This is the first study on FBS showing this behaviour in a full temperature, field, and angular range and it demonstrates that, despite the lower $T_c$ and anisotropy of Nd1111 with respect to Sm1111, this compound is substantially affected by intrinsic pinning generating a strong $\it{ab}$-peak in $J_c$.

The Hall effect is a powerful tool for investigating carrier type and density. For single-band materials, the Hall coefficient is traditionally expressed simply by $R_H^{-1} = -en$, where $e$ is the charge of the carrier, and $n$ is the concentration. However, it is well known that in the critical region near a quantum phase transition, as it was demonstrated for cuprates and heavy fermions, the Hall coefficient exhibits strong temperature and do** dependencies, which can not be described by such a simple expression, and the interpretation of the Hall coefficient for Fe-based superconductors is also problematic. Here, we investigate thin films of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with compressive and tensile in-plane strain in a wide range of Co do**. Such in-plane strain changes the band structure of the compounds, resulting in various shifts of the whole phase diagram as a function of Co do**. We show that the resultant phase diagrams for different strain states can be mapped onto a single phase diagram with the Hall number. This universal plot is attributed to the critical fluctuations in multiband systems near the antiferromagnetic transition, which may suggest a direct link between magnetic and superconducting properties in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system.

FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on CaF2, LaAlO3 and MgO substrates and structurally and electro-magnetically characterized in order to study the influence of the substrate on their transport properties. The in-plane lattice mismatch between FeSe0.5Te0.5 bulk and the substrates shows no influence on the lattice parameters of the films, whereas the type of substrates affects the crystalline quality of the films and, therefore, the superconducting properties. The film on MgO showed an extra peak in the angular dependence of critical current density Jc(θ) at θ = 180° (H || c), which arises from c-axis defects as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. In contrast, no Jc(θ) peaks for H || c were observed in films on CaF2 and LaAlO3. Jc(θ) can be scaled successfully for both films without c-axis correlated defects by the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (AGL) approach with appropriate anisotropy ratio γJ. The scaling parameter γJ is decreasing with decreasing temperature, which is different from what we observed in FeSe0.5Te0.5 films on Fe-buffered MgO substrates.

The U.S. Virtual Astronomical Observatory was a software infrastructure and development project designed both to begin the establishment of an operational Virtual Observatory (VO) and to provide the U.S. coordination with the international VO effort. The concept of the VO is to provide the means by which an astronomer is able to discover, access, and process data seamlessly, regardless of its physical location. This paper describes the origins of the VAO, including the predecessor efforts within the U.S. National Virtual Observatory, and summarizes its main accomplishments. These accomplishments include the development of both scripting toolkits that allow scientists to incorporate VO data directly into their reduction and analysis environments and high-level science applications for data discovery, integration, analysis, and catalog cross-comparison. Working with the international community, and based on the experience from the software development, the VAO was a major contributor to international standards within the International Virtual Observatory Alliance. The VAO also demonstrated how an operational virtual observatory could be deployed, providing a robust operational environment in which VO services worldwide were routinely checked for aliveness and compliance with international standards. Finally, the VAO engaged in community outreach, develo** a comprehensive web site with on-line tutorials, announcements, links to both U.S. and internationally developed tools and services, and exhibits and hands-on training .... All digital products of the VAO Project, including software, documentation, and tutorials, are stored in a repository for community access. The enduring legacy of the VAO is an increasing expectation that new telescopes and facilities incorporate VO capabilities during the design of their data management systems.

Microstructura lly clean, isov alently P-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) single crystalline thin films have been prepared on MgO (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. These films show a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of over 30 K although P content is around 0.22, which is lower than the optimal one for single crystals (i.e., 0.33). The enhanced Tc at this do** level is attributed to the in-plane tensile strain. The strained film shows high transport self-field critical current densities (Jc) of over 6 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K, which are among the highest for Fe based superconductors (FeSCs). In-field Jc exceeds 0.1 MA/cm2 at m0H = 35 T for H||ab and m0H = 18 T for H||c at 4.2 K, respectively, in spite of moderate upper critical fields compared to other FeSCs with similar Tc. Structural investigations reveal no defects or misoriented grains pointing to strong pinning centers. We relate this unexpected high Jc to a strong enhancement of the vortex core energy at optimal Tc, driven by in-plane strain and do**. These unusually high Jc make P-doped Ba-122 very favorable for high-field magnet applications.

The ASCL has recently moved a new infrastructure into production. The new site provides a true database for the code entries and integrates the WordPress news and information pages and the discussion forum into one site. Previous capabilities are retained and permalinks to ascl.net continue to work. This improvement offers more functionality and flexibility than the previous site, is easier to maintain, and offers new possibilities for collaboration. This presentation covers these recent changes to the ASCL.

The oxypnictide coated conductors showed a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 43 K with a self-field critical current density (Jc) of 7.0 x 104 A/cm2 at 5 K, more than 20 times higher than powder-in-tube processed SmFeAs(O,F) wires. Albeit higher Tc as well as better crystalline quality than Co-doped BaFe2As2 coated conductors, in-field Jc of NdFeAs(O,F) was lower than that of Co-doped BaFe2As2. These results suggest that grain boundaries in oxypnictides reduce Jc significantly compared to that in Co-doped BaFe2As2 and, hence biaxial texture is necessary for high Jc.

Angle-resolved transport measurements revealed that planar defects dominate flux pinning in the investigated Co-doped BaFe2As2 thin film. For any given field and temperature, the critical current depends only on the angle between the crystallographic c-axis and the applied magnetic field but not on the angle between the current and the field. The critical current is therefore limited only by the in-plane component of the Lorentz force but independent of the out-of-plane component, which is entirely balanced by the pinning force exerted by the planar defects. This one-dimensional pinning behavior shows similarities and differences to intrinsic pinning in layered superconductors.

The discovery of superconductivity (SC) with a transition temperature, Tc, up to 65K in single-layer FeSe (bulk Tc =8K) films grown on SrTiO3 substrates has attracted special attention to Fe-based thin films. The high Tc is a consequence of the combined effect of electron transfer from the oxygen-vacant substrate to the FeSe thin film and lattice tensile strain. Here we demonstrate the realization of SC in the parent compound BaFe2As2 (no bulk Tc) just by tensile lattice strain without charge do**. We investigate the interplay between strain and SC in epitaxial BaFe2As2 thin films on Fe-buffered MgAl2O4 single crystalline substrates. The strong interfacial bonding between Fe and the FeAs sublattice increases the Fe-Fe distance due to the lattice misfit which leads to a suppression of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave and induces SC with bulk-Tc ?10K. These results highlight the role of structural changes in controlling the phase diagram of Fe-based superconductors.

The anisotropy of the critical current density Jc depends in general on both the properties of the flux lines (such as line tension, coherence length and penetration depth) and the properties of the defects (such as density, shape, orientation etc.). Whereas the Jc anisotropy in microstructurally clean films can be scaled to an effective magnetic field containing the Ginzburg-Landau anisotropy term, it is in general not possible (or only in a limited field range) for samples containing extended defects. Here, the Jc anisotropy of a Co-doped BaFe2As2 sample with 45° [001] tilt grain boundaries (GBs), i.e. grain boundaries created by 45° in-plane rotated grains, as well as extended Fe particles is investigated. This microstructure leads to c-axis correlated pinning, both due to the GBs and the Fe particles and manifests in a c-axis peak in the Jc anisotropy at low magnetic fields and a deviation from the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau scaling at higher fields. Strong pinning at ellipsoidal extended defects, i.e. the Fe particles, is discussed, and the full Jc anisotropy is fitted successfully with the vortex path model. The results are compared to a sample without GBs and Fe particles. 45° GBs seem to be good pinning centers rather than detrimental to current flow.

The recently discovered oxypnictide superconductor SmFeAs(O,F) is the most attractive material among the Fe-based superconductors due to its highest transition temperature of 56 K and potential for high-field performance. In order to exploit this new material for superconducting applications, the knowledge and understanding of its electro-magnetic properties are needed. Recent success in fabricating epitaxial SmFeAs(O,F) thin films opens a great opportunity to explore their transport properties. Here we report on a high critical current density of over 10^5 A/cm^2 at 45 T and 4.2 K for both main field orientations, feature favourable for high-field magnet applications. Additionally, by investigating the pinning properties, we observed a dimensional crossover between the superconducting coherence length and the FeAs interlayer distance at 30-40 K, indicative of a possible intrinsic Josephson junction in SmFeAs(O,F) at low temperatures that can be employed in electronics applications such as a terahertz radiation source and a superconducting Qubit.

While software and algorithms have become increasingly important in astronomy, the majority of authors who publish computational astronomy research do not share the source code they develop, making it difficult to replicate and reuse the work. In this paper we discuss the importance of sharing scientific source code with the entire astrophysics community, and propose that journals require authors to make their code publicly available when a paper is published. That is, we suggest that a paper that involves a computer program not be accepted for publication unless the source code becomes publicly available. The adoption of such a policy by editors, editorial boards, and reviewers will improve the ability to replicate scientific results, and will also make the computational astronomy methods more available to other researchers who wish to apply them to their data.

We report on the transport properties of clean, epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films prepared on Fe-buffered MgO (001) single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Near Tc a steep slope of the upper critical field for H||ab was observed (74.1 T/K), leading to a very short out-of-plane coherence length, ξc, of 0.2 nm, yielding 2ξc(0) approximately 0.4 nm. This value is shorter than the interlayer distance (0.605 nm) between Fe-Se(Te) planes, indicative of modulation of the superconducting order parameter along the c-axis. An inverse correlation between the power law exponent N of the electric field-current density (E-J) curve and the critical current density, Jc, has been observed at 4 K, when the orientation of H was close to the ab-plane. These results prove the presence of intrinsic pinning in Fe(Se,Te). A successful scaling of the angular dependent Jc and the corresponding exponent N can be realized by the anisotropic Ginzburg Landau approach with appropriate Γvalues 2~3.5. The temperature dependence of Γbehaves almost identically to that of the penetration depth anisotropy.

Progress is being made in code discoverability and preservation, but as discussed at ADASS XXI, many codes still remain hidden from public view. With the Astrophysics Source Code Library (ASCL) now indexed by the SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS), the introduction of a new journal, Astronomy & Computing, focused on astrophysics software, and the increasing success of education efforts such as Software Carpentry and SciCoder, the community has the opportunity to set a higher standard for its science by encouraging the release of software for examination and possible reuse. We assembled representatives of the community to present issues inhibiting code release and sought suggestions for tackling these factors.
The session began with brief statements by panelists; the floor was then opened for discussion and ideas. Comments covered a diverse range of related topics and points of view, with apparent support for the propositions that algorithms should be readily available, code used to produce published scientific results should be made available, and there should be discovery mechanisms to allow these to be found easily. With increased use of resources such as GitHub (for code availability), ASCL (for code discovery), and a stated strong preference from the new journal Astronomy & Computing for code release, we expect to see additional progress over the next few years.

The YBCO thin-film detectors were characterized with continuous wave radiation at 0.65 THz. Responsivity values as high as 710 V/W were found for the YBCO nanobridges. Pulsed measurements in the THz frequency range were performed at the electron storage ring ANKA from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Due to the high responsivities of the nanobridges no biasing was required for the detection of the coherent synchrotron radiation pulses achieving very good agreement between the measured pulse shapes and simulations.

Operation of the US Virtual Astronomical Observatory shares some issues with modern physical observatories, e.g., intimidating data volumes and rapid technological change, and must also address unique concerns like the lack of direct control of the underlying and scattered data resources, and the distributed nature of the observatory itself. In this paper we discuss how the VAO has addressed these challenges to provide the astronomical community with a coherent set of science-enabling tools and services. The distributed nature of our virtual observatory-with data and personnel spanning geographic, institutional and regime boundaries-is simultaneously a major operational headache and the primary science motivation for the VAO. Most astronomy today uses data from many resources. Facilitation of matching heterogeneous datasets is a fundamental reason for the virtual observatory. Key aspects of our approach include continuous monitoring and validation of VAO and VO services and the datasets provided by the community, monitoring of user requests to optimize access, caching for large datasets, and providing distributed storage services that allow user to collect results near large data repositories. Some elements are now fully implemented, while others are planned for subsequent years. The distributed nature of the VAO requires careful attention to what can be a straightforward operation at a conventional observatory, e.g., the organization of the web site or the collection and combined analysis of logs. Many of these strategies use and extend protocols developed by the international virtual observatory community.

The Virtual Observatory (VO) is realizing global electronic integration of astronomy data. One of the long-term goals of the U.S. VO project, the Virtual Astronomical Observatory (VAO), is development of services and protocols that respond to the growing size and complexity of astronomy data sets. This paper describes how VAO staff are active in such development efforts, especially in innovative strategies and techniques that recognize the limited operating budgets likely available to astronomers even as demand increases. The project has a program of professional outreach whereby new services and protocols are evaluated.

Superconducting and normal state transport properties in iron pnictides are sensitive to disorder and impurity scattering. By investigation of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 thin films with varying Co concentration, we demonstrate that in the dirty limit the superconducting dome in the electronic phase diagram of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 shifts towards lower do** concentrations, which differs significantly from observations in single crystals. We show that especially in the underdoped regime superconducting transition temperatures higher than 27 K are possible.

The photoresponse of YBa2Cu3O7-d thin film microbridges with thicknesses between 15 and 50 nm was studied in the optical and terahertz frequency range. The voltage transients in response to short radiation pulses were recorded in real time with a resolution of a few tens of picoseconds. The bridges were excited by either femtosecond pulses at a wavelength of 0.8 μm or broadband (0.1 - 1.5 THz) picosecond pulses of coherent synchrotron radiation. The transients in response to optical radiation are qualitatively well explained in the framework of the two-temperature model with a fast component in the picosecond range and a bolometric nanosecond component whose decay time depends on the film thickness. The transients in the THz regime showed no bolometric component and had amplitudes up to three orders of magnitude larger than the two-temperature model predicts. Additionally THz-field dependent transients in the absence of DC bias were observed. We attribute the response in the THz regime to a rearrangement of vortices caused by high-frequency currents.

A resistor network array sufficiently reproduces this effect, assuming an increase of the electrical conductance between tape and film with decreasing buffer layer thickness. Based on this model we evaluated the influence of this effect on the critical current density and successfully reconstructed the superconducting transition of the bilayer.

The angular-dependent critical current densities exhibit peaks positioned at H // ab similar to other pnictide thin films. The volume pinning force of FeSe1-xTex in this direction is very strong compared with that of Co-doped BaFe2As2, due to a good matching between the interlayer distance in the c direction and the out-of-plane coherence length.

We have investigated the influence of the superconducting layer thickness, d, on the structural and transport properties of Co-doped BaFe2As2 films deposited on Fe-buffered MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The superconducting transition temperature and the texture quality of Co-doped BaFe2As2 films improve with increasing d due to a gradual relief of the tensile strain. For d>90 nm an additional 110 textured component of Co-doped BaFe2As2 was observed, which leads to an upward shift in the angular dependent critical current density at H // c. These results indicate that the grain boundaries created by the 110 textured component may contribute to the c-axis pinning.

A self-field critical current density of over 10^5 A/cm2 has already been achieved even at 8 K. We demonstrate the growth of epitaxial Fe/Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 (Fe/Ba-122) bilayers on MgO(001) and LSAT(001) single crystal substrates using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). By exploiting the metallic nature of the FeAs tetrahedron in the Ba-122 crystal structure, we achieve a coherent interfacial bond between bcc iron and Co-doped Ba-122. Tc values for both bilayers were close to that of the PLD target. Direct observation of interfacial bonding between Fe and the Ba-122 FeAs sublattice by atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy implies that this bilayer architecture may work for other iron pnictide systems and pave the way for the fabrication of superconducting/ferromagnetic heterostructures.

Investigating the anisotropy of superconductors permits an access to fundamental properties. Having succeeded in the fabrication of epitaxial superconducting LaFeAs(O,F) thin films we performed an extensive study of electrical transport properties. In face of multiband superconductivity we can demonstrate that a Blatter scaling of the angular dependent critical current densities can be adopted, although being originally developed for single band superconductors. In contrast to single band superconductors the mass anisotropy of LaFeAs(O,F) is temperature dependent. A very steep increase of the upper critical field and the irreversibility field can be observed at temperatures below 6K, indicating that the band with the smaller gap is in the dirty limit. This temperature dependence can be theoretically described by two dominating bands responsible for superconductivity. A pinning force scaling provides insight into the prevalent pinning mechanism and can be specified in terms of the Kramer model.

No Jc(theta) peaks for H || c were observed regardless of temperatures and magnetic fields. In contrast, Jc(theta) showed a broad maximum at theta=90 degree, which arises from intrinsic pinning. All data except at theta=90 degree can be scaled by the Blatter plot. Hc2(theta) near Tc follows the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau expression. The mass anisotropy increased from 1.5 to 2 with increasing temperature, which is an evidence for multi-band superconductivity.

All the films, except on YAO, have been grown epitaxially without buffer layers. The films deposited on YAO contained 45 degree in-plane rotated grains and showed a broad superconducting transition. The onset Tc of the films is observed to increase from 16.2 K to 24.5 K with increasing c/a, mainly due to a slight distortion of the AsFe4 tetrahedron. From this correlation, we expect that higher superconducting transition temperatures than 24.5 K in a strained epitaxial film may be possible.

Superconducting and epitaxially grown LaFeAsOF thin films were successfully prepared on (001)-oriented LaAlO3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition. The prepared thin films show exclusively a single in-plane orientation with epitaxial relation (001)[100] parallel to (001)[100] and a FWHM value of 1deg. Furthermore, resistive measurement of the superconducting transition temperature revealed a Tc90 of 25K with a high residual resistive ratio of 6.8. The applied preparation technique, standard thin film pulsed laser deposition at room temperature in combination with a subsequent post annealing process, is suitable for fabrication of high quality LaFeAsO1-xFx thin films. A high upper critical field of 76.2 T was evaluated for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the c-axis and the anisotropy was calculated to be 3.3 assuming single band superconductivity.
