A technique for measuring high-energy electrons using Si detectors of various thicknesses that are much smaller than the range of the examined electrons is presented. The advantages of the method are discussed on the basis of electron-positron pair creation recently studied in deuteron-deuteron fusion reactions at very low energies. Careful Geant 4 Monte Carlo simulations enabled the identification of the main spectral contributions of emitted electrons and positrons resulting from the energy loss mechanisms and scattering processes within the target, detector and their holders. Significant changes in the intensity of the detected electrons, depending on the detector thickness and the thicknesses of absorption foils placed in the front of the detector could be observed. The corresponding correction factors have been calculated and can be used for different applications in basic and applied research.

The $^6$Li(n,$γ$)$^7$Li cross sections in the neutron energy range of 0.6 to 4 MeV have been measured by the experimental implementation of the direct capture formalism. This was done by measuring the $γ$ transition probability experimentally and accounting for the spin factor by theoretical calculation. The electromagnetic transition probabilities from $^7$Li$^*$ analogous to the initial neutron capture states of $^6$Li$+n$ were measured by populating the J$_i$ states of $^7$Li through $^7$Li($p,p'$)$^7$Li$^*$ reaction. The impact of coupling of resonant states, above neutron separation threshold of $^7$Li, in the neutron capture, is observed from the capture $γ$ spectrum. The measured cross sections were reproduced through {\sc fresco} and Talys-1.95 Direct Capture Calculations.

The period-change rate (PCR) of pulsating variable stars is a useful probe of changes in their interior structure, and thus of their evolutionary stages. So far, the PCRs of Classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been explored in a limited sample of the total population of these variables. Here we use a template-based method to build observed minus computed (O-C) period diagrams, from which we can derive PCRs for these stars by taking advantage of the long time baseline afforded by the Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard (DASCH) light curves, combined with additional data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), the MAssive Compact Halo Object (MACHO) project, Gaia's Data Release 2, and in some cases the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS). From an initial sample of 2315 sources, our method provides an unprecedented sample of 1303 LMC Classical Cepheids with accurate PCRs, the largest for any single galaxy, including the Milky Way. The derived PCRs are largely compatible with theoretically expected values, as computed by our team using the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) code, as well as with similar previous computations available in the literature. Additionally, five long-period (P>50 d) sources display a cyclic behavior in their O-C diagrams, which is clearly incompatible with evolutionary changes. Finally, on the basis of their large positive PCR values, two first-crossing Cepheid candidates are identified.

The result is presented for 2.5 $<p_{\rm T}<$ 10 GeV/$c$ with an improved precision above 6 GeV/$c$ with respect to the previous measurements, providing more constraints on perturbative QCD calculations. Moreover, this measurement also provides a high-precision reference for measurements of nuclear modification factors for inclusive electrons from open-charm and -bottom hadron decays in heavy-ion collisions.

Freezing of Gait (FoG) is a common gait deficit among patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (PD). In order to help these patients recover from FoG episodes, Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS) is needed. The authors propose a ubiquitous embedded system that detects FOG events with a Machine Learning (ML) subsystem from accelerometer signals . By making inferences on-device, we avoid issues prevalent in cloud-based systems such as latency and network connection dependency. The resource-efficient classifier used, reduces the model size requirements by approximately 400 times compared to the best performing standard ML systems, with a trade-off of a mere 1.3% in best classification accuracy. The aforementioned trade-off facilitates deployability in a wide range of embedded devices including microcontroller based systems. The research also explores the optimization procedure to deploy the model on an ATMega2560 microcontroller with a minimum system latency of 44.5 ms. The smallest model size of the proposed resource efficient ML model was 1.4 KB with an average recall score of 93.58%.

The unpolarised transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions are extracted from HERMES and COMPASS experimental measurements of SIDIS multiplicities for charged hadron production. The data are grouped into independent bins of the kinematical variables, in which the TMD factorisation is expected to hold. A simple factorised functional form of the TMDs is adopted, with a Gaussian dependence on the intrinsic transverse momentum, which turns out to be quite adequate in shape. HERMES data do not need any normalisation correction, while fits of the COMPASS data much improve with a $y$-dependent overall normalisation factor. A comparison of the extracted TMDs with previous EMC and JLab data confirms the adequacy of the simple Gaussian distributions. The possible role of the TMD evolution is briefly considered.

By applying wavelet analysis, we find a strong decadal modulation of African dust on Category 5 hurricanes and an annual modulation on all other categories of hurricanes. We identify the formation of Category 5 hurricanes occurring mainly around the decadal minimum variation of African dust and in deep water areas of the Atlantic Ocean, where hurricane eyes have the lowest pressure. According to our results, future tropical cyclones will not evolve to Category 5 until the next decadal minimum that is, by the year 2015 +/- 2.

From the solution we find the explicit energy dependence on $t=\ln E/μ$ of the evolution of the {\em down} quark masses $q=d,s,b$ from the grand unification scale down to the top quark mass $m_{t}$. These results together with the earlier published evolution of the {\em up} quark masses completes the pattern of the evolution of the quark masses. We also find the energy dependence of the absolute values of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix $|V_{ij}|$. The interesting property of the evolution of the CKM matrix and the ratios of the quark masses: $m_{u,c}/m_{t}$ and $m_{d,s}/m_{b}$ is that they all depend on $t$ through only one function of energy $h(t)$.

We analyze the two loop renormalization group equations in the standard model and its extensions for the coupling constants and the quark Yukawa couplings. The key point of our analysis is the observed hierarchy of the quark masses and the CKM matrix. For the one loop evolution we find the explicit solution for the evolution of the Yukawa couplings and show the following: 1. the CKM matrix depends on the energy on only one function of energy; 2. the ratios of the down quark masses depend on the energy through the same function as the CKM matrix; 3. the diagonalizing matrices of the biunitary transformation of the up quarks are energy independent. Next we give the explicit form of the two loop corrections to the evolution of the quark Yukawa couplings and show that the relative corrections are of the order (λ^{4}) for the quark Yukawa couplings and of the order (λ^{5}) for the CKM matrix. Finally we give the equations of the one loop evolution of the squares of the matrix elements of the CKM matrix and their explicit solution.
