The REFLEX Galaxy Cluster Survey IV: The X-ray Luminosity Function

Abstract: The X-ray galaxy cluster sample from the REFLEX Cluster Survey, which covers the X-ray brightest galaxy clusters detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey in the southern sky, is used to construct the X-ray luminosity function of clusters in the local Universe. With 452 clusters detected above an X-ray flux-limit of 3 10^(-12) erg s^(-1) cm^(-2) in 4.24 sr of the sky, this sample is the most comprehe… ▽ More The X-ray galaxy cluster sample from the REFLEX Cluster Survey, which covers the X-ray brightest galaxy clusters detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey in the southern sky, is used to construct the X-ray luminosity function of clusters in the local Universe. Non-Gaussian morphology on large scales: Minkowski functionals of the REFLEX cluster catalogue

BMW: a ROSAT-HRI source catalogue obtained with a wavelet transform detection algorithm

Abstract: In collaboration with the Observatories of Palermo and Rome and the SAX-SDC we are constructing a multi-site interactive archive system featuring specific analysis tools. In this context we developed a detection algorithm based on the Wavelet Transform (WT) and performed a systematic analysis of all ROSAT-HRI public data (~3100 observations +1000 to come). The WT is specifically suited to detect… ▽ More In collaboration with the Observatories of Palermo and Rome and the SAX-SDC we are constructing a multi-site interactive archive system featuring specific analysis tools. In this context we developed a detection algorithm based on the Wavelet Transform (WT) and performed a systematic analysis of all ROSAT-HRI public data (~3100 observations +1000 to come). The WT is specifically suited to detect and characterize extended sources while properly detecting point sources in very crowded fields. Moreover, the good angular resolution of HRI images allows the source extension and position to be accurately determined. This effort has produced the BMW (Brera Multiscale Wavelet) catalogue, with more than 19,000 sources detected at the ~4.2sigma level. For each source detection we have information on the position, X-ray flux and extension. This allows for instance to select complete samples of extended X-ray sources such as candidate clusters of galaxies or SNR's. Details about the detection algorithm and the catalogue can be found in Lazzati et al. (1999), Campana et al. (1999) and Panzera et al. (2001). The main aim is to provide the students with the information and tools to familiarize with a few basic questions: 1) What are the scaling laws followed by the clustering of luminous objects over almost four decades of scales; 2) How galaxy motions distort the observed maps in redshift space, and how we can correct and use them to our benefit; 3) Is the observed clustering of galaxies suggestive of a fractal Universe; and consequently, 4) Is our faith in the Cosmological Principle still well placed, i.e. do we see evidence for a homogeneous distribution of matter on the largest explorable scales, in terms of the correlation function and power spectrum of the distribution of luminous objects. The BMW Deep X-ray Cluster Survey

Abstract: We briefly describe the main features of the Brera Multi-Wavelet (BMW) survey of serendipitous X-ray clusters, based on the still unexploited ROSAT-HRI archival observations. Cluster candidates are selected from the general BMW catalogue of 20,000 sources based exclusively on their X-ray extension. Contrary to common wisdom, a clever selection of the HRI energy channels allows us to significantl… ▽ More We briefly describe the main features of the Brera Multi-Wavelet (BMW) survey of serendipitous X-ray clusters, based on the still unexploited ROSAT-HRI archival observations. Cluster candidates are selected from the general BMW catalogue of 20,000 sources based exclusively on their X-ray extension. Contrary to common wisdom, a clever selection of the HRI energy channels allows us to significantly reduce the background noise, thus greatly improving the ability to detect low surface-brightness sources as clusters. The resulting sample of ~250 candidates shows a very good sky coverage down to a flux \~3x10^-14 erg/s/cm^2 ([0.5-2.0] keV band), i.e comparable to existing PSPC-based deep survey, with a particularly interesting area of ~100 sq.deg. around fluxes ~10^-13 erg/s/cm^2, i.e. where highly-luminous, rare systems at z~0.6-1 can be detected. At the same time, the superior angular resolution of the instrument should avoid biases against intrinsically small systems, while easing the identification process (e.g. by spotting blends and AGN contaminants). While about 20% of the candidates are already identified with groups/clusters at z<0.3 on the DSS2 images, we have started a deep CCD imaging campaign to observe all sources associated to "blank fields". First results from these observations reveal a distant (z>0.5) bonafide cluster counterpart for ~80% of the targets. △ Less

X-ray Clusters of Galaxies as Tracers of Structure in the Universe

If we observe the sky in X rays, clusters of galaxies stand out as cosmic lighthouses by virtue of a thin gas trapped and heated within their gravitational potential wells. In the paper we document the process by which the primary cluster candidate catalogue is constructed prior to the opt… ▽ More We describe the construction of an X-ray flux-limited sample of galaxy clusters, the REFLEX survey catalogue, to be used for cosmological studies. The survey is based on the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and on extensive follow-up observations conducted in the frame of an ESO key program. In the paper we document the process by which the primary cluster candidate catalogue is constructed prior to the optical follow-up observations. We describe the reanalysis of the RASS source catalogue which enables us to impose a proper flux limit cut to the X-ray source list without introducing a severe bias against extended sources. We discuss the correlation of the X-ray and optical (COSMOS) data to find galaxy density enhancements at the RASS X-ray source positions and the further evaluation of the nature of these cluster candidates. Based also on the results of the follow-up observations we provide a statistical analysis of the completeness and contamination of the final cluster sample and show results on the cluster number counts. The final sample of identified X-ray clusters reaches a flux limit of 3e-12 erg s-1 cm-2 in the 0.1 - 2.4 keV band and comprises 452 clusters. The results imply a completeness of the REFLEX cluster sample well in excess of 90% and a contamination by non-cluster X-ray sources of less than 9%, an accuracy sufficient for the use of this cluster sample for cosmological tests. △ Less

Abstract: We present a measure of the power spectrum on scales from 15 to 800 Mpc/h using the ROSAT-ESO Flux-Limited X-Ray(REFLEX) galaxy cluster catalogue. The REFLEX survey provides a sample of the 452 X-ray brightest southern clusters of galaxies with the nominal flux limit S=3.0 10^{-12}erg/s/cm2 for the ROSAT energy band (0.1-2.4)keV. Several tests are performed showing no significant incompletenesse… ▽ More We present a measure of the power spectrum on scales from 15 to 800 Mpc/h using the ROSAT-ESO Flux-Limited X-Ray(REFLEX) galaxy cluster catalogue. The REFLEX survey provides a sample of the 452 X-ray brightest southern clusters of galaxies with the nominal flux limit S=3.0 10^{-12}erg/s/cm2 for the ROSAT energy band (0.1-2.4)keV. Several tests are performed showing no significant incompletenesses of the REFLEX clusters with X-ray luminosities brighter than 10^{43}erg/s up to scales of about 800 Mpc/h. They also indicate that cosmic variance might be more important than previous studies suggest. We regard this as a warning not to draw general cosmological conclusions from cluster samples with a size smaller than REFLEX. Power spectra, P(k), of comoving cluster number densities are estimated for flux- and volume-limited subsamples. The most important result is the detection of a broad maximum within the comoving wavenumber range 0.022<k<0.030 h/Mpc. The data suggest an increase of the power spectral amplitude with X-ray luminosity. Compared to optically selected cluster samples the REFLEX P(k)is flatter for wavenumbers k<0.05 h/Mpc thus shifting the maximum of P(k) to larger scales. The smooth maximum is not consistent with the narrow peak detected at k=0.05 h/Mpc using the Abell/ACO richness $\ge 0$ data. In the range 0.02<k<0.4 h/Mpc general agreement is found between the slope of the REFLEX P(k) and those obtained with optically selected galaxies. A semi-analytic description of the biased nonlinear power spectrum in redshift space gives the best agreement for low-density Cold Dark Matter models with or without a cosmological constant. △ Less

Optical follow-up of the REFLEX survey: a new perspective in cluster studies

We have already observed in B, V, R, 9 of the about 50 clusters of the subsample, with 0.15 \le z \le 0.18. More time has been allocated by ESO for our project in March 2001. We w… ▽ More After the completion of the catalogue built with ESO key program (REFLEX), we are beginning to explore the multiband optical characteristics of a subsample of those clusters selected in a statistically independent way. We will therefore be able to compare X-ray and optical morphologies and luminosities and, thanks to the large field of view of the WFI instrument, assess the luminosity function and the color segregation in the cluster on a robust statistical basis. The ROSAT-ESO Flux Limited X-ray (REFLEX) Galaxy Cluster Survey II: The Spatial Correlation Function

The REFLEX cluster sample is flux limited to 3x10^{-12} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} in the ROSAT energy band (0.1-2.4 keV) and spans 3 decades in X-ray… ▽ More We report the results of the spatial two-point correlation function xi(r) for the new X-ray galaxy cluster survey REFLEX, which comprises of 452 X-ray selected clusters (449 with redshifts) detected by the ROSAT satellite during the ROSAT All-Sky-Survey. The REFLEX cluster sample is flux limited to 3x10^{-12} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} in the ROSAT energy band (0.1-2.4 keV) and spans 3 decades in X-ray luminosity (10^{42} - 10^{45} h^{-2} erg s^{-1}), containing galaxy groups and rich clusters out to a redshift z~0.3. Covering a contiguous area of 4.24 sr REFLEX is the largest X-ray cluster sample to date for which spatial clustering has been analysed. Correlation studies using clusters selected on the basis of their X-ray emission are particularly interesting as they are largely free from the projection biases inherent to optical studies. For the entire flux-limited sample we find that the correlation length (the scale at which the correlation amplitude passes through unity) r_0~20 h^{-1}Mpc. For example, if a power-law fit is made to xi(r) over the range 4-40 h^{-1} Mpc then r_0=18.8+-0.9. An indication of the robustness of this result comes from the high degree of isotropy seen in the clustering pattern on scales close to the correlation length. On larger scales xi(r) deviates from a power-law, crossing zero at ~45h^{-1} Mpc. From an examination of 5 volume-limited cluster sub-samples we find no significant trend of r_0 with limiting X-ray luminosity. A comparison with recent model predictions for the clustering properties of X-ray flux-limited samples, indicates that Cold Dark Matter models with the matter density Omega_m=1 fail to produce sufficient clustering to account for the data, while Omega_m~0.3 models provide an excellent fit. △ Less

Power Spectrum Analysis of the ESP Galaxy Redshift Survey

We develope a technique to describe the survey window function analytically, and then deconvolve it from the measured power spectrum using a variant of the Lucy method. We test the whole deconvolution procedure on ESP mock catalogues drawn from large N-body simulations, and find that i… ▽ More We measure the power spectrum of the galaxy distribution in the ESO Slice Project (ESP) galaxy redshift survey. We develope a technique to describe the survey window function analytically, and then deconvolve it from the measured power spectrum using a variant of the Lucy method. We test the whole deconvolution procedure on ESP mock catalogues drawn from large N-body simulations, and find that it is reliable for recovering the correct amplitude and shape of $P(k)$ at $k> 0.065 h$ Mpc$^{-1}$. In general, the technique is applicable to any survey composed by a collection of circular fields with arbitrary pattern on the sky, as typical of surveys based on fibre spectrographs. The estimated power spectrum has a well-defined power-law shape $k^n$ with $n\simeq -2.2$ for $k\ge 0.2 h$ Mpc$^{-1}$, and a smooth bend to a flatter shape ($n\simeq -1.6$) for smaller $k$'s. The smallest wavenumber, where a meaningful reconstruction can be performed ($k\sim 0.06 h$ Mpc$^{-1}$), does not allow us to explore the range of scales where other power spectra seem to show a flattening and hints for a turnover. We also find, by direct comparison of the Fourier transforms, that the estimate of the two-point correlation function $ξ(s)$ is much less sensitive to the effect of a problematic window function as that of the ESP, than the power spectrum. Comparison to other surveys shows an excellent agreement with estimates from blue-selected surveys. In particular, the ESP power spectrum is virtually indistinguishable from that of the Durham-UKST survey over the common range of $k$'s, an indirect confirmation of the quality of the deconvolution technique applied. △ Less

Large-Scale Structure at the Turn of the Millennium

Abstract: I review the current status of studies of the large-scale structure of the Universe using redshift surveys of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. I first summarise the advances we have made in our knowledge of the cosmography of the z<0.2 Universe during the last 25 years, as well as the status of the major surveys in progress. The question of how the "a priori" selection of some classes of objec… ▽ More I review the current status of studies of the large-scale structure of the Universe using redshift surveys of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. I first summarise the advances we have made in our knowledge of the cosmography of the z<0.2 Universe during the last 25 years, as well as the status of the major surveys in progress. The question of how the "a priori" selection of some classes of objects "biases" the map** of the underlying mass density field is discussed in some detail. I then emphasise the advantages of using clusters of galaxies selected in the X-ray band as tracers of large--scale structure, summarising the most recent results of the REFLEX survey, which is under completion. The strong potential of using X-ray clusters to study the evolution of structure to large redshifts is underlined. I then summarise some of the most recent statistical results on the clustering of galaxies and clusters, using the two-point correlation function xi(s) and the power spectrum P(k). In particular, I concentrate on the increased information available on the detailed shape of these functions on large scales, lambda~100/h Mpc. I argue that significant evidence is accumulating from different observations that P(k) has a well-defined and possibly narrow peak around k~0.05 h/Mpc. I conclude with a glimpse into the future of large-scale structure surveys at high redshifts, describing the features of the VIRMOS deep survey, which will soon start collecting redshifts with the ESO VLT for ~150,000 galaxies at a typical depth of z=1. △ Less

Deep observations, down to a limiting magnitude of about 27 and 24 in the Bessel-R and Gunn-I band, respectively, were obtained between May 16 and 18 from the ESO NTT-SUSI2 telescope and on May 20 from the ESO 3.6 m (EFOSC2) telescope. No obvious host associated to the GRB990510 optical afterglow was found in the R and I band images. By comparing the light curves with respect to the theoretical colors of galaxies with different morphology we derived a lower limit of R about 26.6 for the host galaxy. △ Less

A Flux-limited Sample of Bright Clusters of Galaxies from the Southern Part of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey: the Catalog and the LogN-LogS

The sample is constructed starting from an identification of candidate clusters in RASS1, and their X-ray fluxes are remeasured using the Steepness Ratio Technique. This method is better suited than the RASS1 st… ▽ More We describe the selection of an X-ray flux-limited sample of bright clusters of galaxies in the southern hemisphere, based on the first analysis of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey data (RASS1). The sample is constructed starting from an identification of candidate clusters in RASS1, and their X-ray fluxes are remeasured using the Steepness Ratio Technique. This method is better suited than the RASS1 standard algorithm for measuring flux from extended sources. The final sample is count-rate-limited in the ROSAT hard band (0.5-2.0 keV), so that due to the distribution of NH, its effective flux limit varies between about 3-4 x 10**-12 ergs cm**-2 s**-1 over the selected area. This covers the Decl<2.5 deg part of the south Galactic cap region (b<-20 deg) - with the exclusion of patches of low RASS1 exposure time and of the Magellanic Clouds area - for a total of 8235 deg**2. 130 candidate sources fulfill our selection criteria for bonafide clusters of galaxies in this area. Of these, 101 are Abell/ACO clusters, while 29 do not have a counterpart in these catalogs. Of these clusters, 126 (97%) clusters have a redshift and for these we compute an X-ray luminosity. 20% of the cluster redshifts come from new observations, as part of the ESO Key Program REFLEX Cluster Survey that is under completion. Considering the intrinsic biases and incompletenesses introduced by the flux selection and source identification processes, we estimate the overall completeness to be better than 90%. The observed number count distribution, LogN-LogS, is well fitted by a power law with slope alpha = 1.34 +/- 0.15 and normalization A = 11.87 +/- 1.04 sr**-1 (10**-11 ergs cm**-2 s**-1)**alpha, in good agreement with other measurements. △ Less

From the redshift-space correlation function xi(s), we see positive clustering out to separations ~50/h Mpc, with a smooth break on larger scales and zero-crossing between 60 and 80/h Mpc. xi(s) is reasonably well described by a shallow power law with γ~1.5 between 3 and 50/h Mpc, while on smaller scales (0.2-2/h Mpc) it has a shallower slope (γ~ 1). We examine the full effect of redshift-space distortions through the two-dimensional correlation function xi(rp,pi), from which we project out the real-space xi(r) below 10/h Mpc. This function is well described by a power-law model (r/r_o)^{-γ}, with r_o=4.15^{+0.20}_{-0.21} h^{-1} Mpc and γ=1.67^{+0.07}_{-0.09}. Comparison to other redshift surveys shows a consistent picture in which clustering remains positive out to separations of 50/h Mpc or larger, in substantial agreement with the results obtained from angular surveys like the APM and EDSGC. Also the shape of the two-point correlation function is remarkably unanimous among these data sets, in all cases requiring more power above 5/h Mpc (a `shoulder'), than a simple extrapolation of the canonical xi(r)=(r/5)^{-1.8}. xi(s) for volume-limited subsamples shows evidence of luminosity segregation only for the most luminous sample with M_{b_J}\le -20.5. When redshift-space distortions are removed through projection of xi(rp,pi), however, a weak dependence on luminosity is seen at small separations also at fainter magnitudes. This effect is masked in redshift space, as the mean pairwise velocity dispersion experiences a parallel increase, basically erasing the effect of the clustering growth on xi(s). △ Less

The X-ray Luminosity Function of Bright Clusters in the Local Universe

We investigate possible evolutionary effects within the sample, out to our redshift limit (z ~ 0.3), finding no evidence for evolution. Our results are in good agreement with other local estimates of the XLF, implying that this statistic for the local universe is now well determined. Comparison with XLFs for distant clusters (0.3 < z < 0.6), shows that no evolution is present for L_X < 10^{44} ergs/s. However, we detect differences at the 3 sigma level, between our local XLF and the distant one estimated by Henry et al. for the EMSS sample. We find 231 groups above the number overdensity threshold delta(rho)/rho=80 in the redshift range 5000<cz <60000 km/s. These groups contain 1250 members, 40.5% of the 3085 ESP galaxies within the same redshift range. The median velocity dispersion (corrected for measurement errors and computed at the redshift of the group) is sigma_{ESP,median} = 194 km/s. We show that our result is reliable in spite of the particular geometry of the ESP survey (two rows of tangent circular fields of radius 15 arcmin), which causes most systems to be only partially surveyed. In general, we find that the properties of ESP groups are consistent with those of groups in shallower (and wider) catalogs (e.g. CfA2N and SSRS2). As in shallower catalogs, ESP groups trace very well the geometry of the large scale structure. Our results are of particular interest because the depth of the ESP survey allows us to sample group properties over a large number of structures. We also compare luminosity function and spectral properties of galaxies that are members of groups with those of isolated galaxies. We find that galaxies in groups have a brighter M* with respect to non--member galaxies; the slope αis the same, within the errors, in the two cases. We find that 34% of ESP galaxies with detectable emission lines are members of groups. The fraction of galaxies without detectable emission lines in groups is significantly higher: 45%. More generally, we find a gradual decrease of the fraction of emission line galaxies among members of systems of increasing richness. This result confirms that the morphology-density relation found for clusters also extends toward systems of lower density. △ Less

On smaller scales (0.2-2/h Mpc), the slope is shallower, mostly due to redshift-space depression by virialized structures. This effect is found to be enhanced by the J3 optimal-weighting estimator for xi. We explicitly evidence these effects by computing xi(r_p,pi) and the projected function w_p(r_p). In this way we recover the real-space correlation function xi(r), which we fit below 10/h Mpc with a power-law model. This gives a reasonable fit, with r_o=4.15^{+0.20}_{-0.21} /h Mpc and γ=1.67^{+0.07}_{-0.09}. This results on xi(r) and xi(s), and the comparison with other surveys, clearly confirm how the shape of spatial correlations above ~3/h Mpc is characterised by a significant `shoulder' with respect to the small-scale ~ -1.8 power law, corresponding to a steepening of P(k) near the turnover. △ Less

We have investigated in detail many possible sources of such a discrepancy, and we can exclude possible zero-point shifts or calibration problems. We have detected and measured systematic velocity differences produced by the different templates used in the cross-correlation. We conclude that such differences can in principle explain the effect, but in this case the non-trivial implication would be that the best-fitting template does not necessarily give the best velocity estimate. As we do not have any a priori reason to select a template different from the best-fitting one, we did not apply any correction to the ESO Slice Project velocities. However, as for a small number of galaxies the effect is so large that it is likely to have a physical explanation, we have also taken into account the possibility that the discrepancy can be partly real: in this case, it might help to understand the role of gas outflows in the process of galaxy evolution. In view of the future large spectroscopic surveys, we stress the importance of using different templates and making them publicly available, in order to assess the amplitude of systematic effects, and to allow a direct comparison of different catalogues. △ Less

Therefore, results conflicting with the ``canonical'' picture would be of the utmost importance. In a number of recent papers it has been suggested that strong evidence of a fractal distribution with dimension D~2 exists in several samples, including Abell clusters [ACO] and galaxies from the ESO Slice Project redshift survey [ESP].Here we report the results of an independent analysis of the radial density run,N(<R)~R^D, of the ESP and ACO data. For the ESP data the situation is such that the explored volume, albeit reasonably deep, is still influenced by the presence of large structures. Moreover, the depth of the ESP survey (z<0.2) is such to cause noticeable effects according to different choices of k-corrections, and this adds some additional uncertainty in the results. However, we find that for a variety of volume limited samples the dimensionality of the ESP sample is D~3, and the value $D = 2$ is always excluded at the level of at least five (bootstrap) standard deviations. The only way in which we reproduce D~2 is by both unphysically ignoring the galaxy k-correction and using Euclidean rather than FRW cosmological distances. In the cluster case the problems related to the choice of metrics and k-correction are much lessened, and we find that ACO clusters have D_{ACO} = 3.07 +- 0.18 and D_{ACO} = 2.93 +- 0.15 for richness class R \geq 1 and R \geq 0, respectively. Therefore D=2 is excluded with high significance also for the cluster data. △ Less

In a series of papers, these authors assert that observations are consistent with a fractal distribution of objects extending to the lim… ▽ More I critically discuss in a pedagogical and phenomenological way a few crucial tests challenging the claims by Pietronero and collaborators that there is no evidence from available galaxy catalogues that the Universe is actually homogeneous above a certain scale. In a series of papers, these authors assert that observations are consistent with a fractal distribution of objects extending to the limit of the present data. I show that while galaxies are indeed clustered in a scale-free way on small and intermediate scales, this behaviour does not continue indefinitely. Although the specific wavelength at which the galaxy distribution apparently turns to homogeneity is dangerously close to the size of the largest samples presently available, there are serious hints suggesting that this turnover is real and that its effects are detected in the behaviour of statistical estimators. The most recent claims of a continuing fractal hierarchy up to scales of several hundreds Mpc seem to be abscribable to the use of incomplete samples or to an improper treatment of otherwise high- quality data sets. The fractal perspective, nevertheless, can represent a fruitful way to look at the clustering properties of galaxies, when properly coupled to the traditional gravitational instability scenario. In the last part of this paper I therefore try to clarify, at a very simple level, some of the confusion existing on the actual scaling properties of the galaxy distribution. In this context, I shall discuss how these can provide hints on the evolution of the large-scale structure of the Universe, when one properly takes into account the effect of both initial conditions and nonlinear gravitational growth in producing the presently observed distribution. △ Less

Redshift-Space Distortions and the Real-Space Clustering of Different Galaxy Types

Redshift-space distortions affect early- and late-type galaxies in different ways. In particular, at small separations, the dominant effect comes from virialized cluster cores, where ellipticals are the dominant population. The net result is that a meaningful comparison of the clustering strength of different morphological types can be performed only in real space, i.e., after projecting out the redshift distortions on the two-point correlation function xi(r_p,pi). A power-law fit to the projected function w_p(r_p) on scales smaller than 10/h Mpc gives r_o = 8.35_{-0.76}^{+0.75} /h Mpc, γ= 2.05_{-0.08}^{+0.10} for the early-type population, and r_o = 5.55_{-0.45}^{+0.40} /h Mpc, γ= 1.73_{-0.08}^{+0.07} for spirals and irregulars. These values are derived for a sample luminosity brighter than M_{Zw} = -19.5. We detect a 25% increase of r_o with luminosity for all types combined, from M_{Zw} = -19 to -20. In the framework of a simple stable-clustering model for the mean streaming of pairs, we estimate sigma_12(1), the one-dimensional pairwise velocity dispersion between 0 and 1 /h Mpc, to be 865^{+250}_{-165} km/s for early-type galaxies and 345^{+95}_{-65} km/s for late types. This latter value should be a fair estimate of the pairwise dispersion for ``field'' galaxies; it is stable with respect to the presence or absence of clusters in the sample, and is consistent with the values found for non-cluster galaxies and IRAS galaxies at similar separations. △ Less

Abstract: We have re-examined the nature of the cluster galaxy luminosity function using the data from the Edinburgh-Durham Southern Galaxy Catalogue and the Edinburgh-Milano Redshift Survey. We derive a best fit luminosity function over the range M(bj)=-18 to -21, for a composite sample of 22 of the richer clusters that has M*=-20.16+/-0.02 and alpha=-1.22+/-0.04. The dominant error in these values resul… ▽ More We have re-examined the nature of the cluster galaxy luminosity function using the data from the Edinburgh-Durham Southern Galaxy Catalogue and the Edinburgh-Milano Redshift Survey. We derive a best fit luminosity function over the range M(bj)=-18 to -21, for a composite sample of 22 of the richer clusters that has M*=-20.16+/-0.02 and alpha=-1.22+/-0.04. The dominant error in these values results from the choice of background subtraction method. From extensive simulations we can show that when the LF is fitted over this narrow range, it is difficult to discriminate against bright values of M*in the single cluster fits, but that faint values provide a strong test of the universality of the luminosity function. We find that all the individual cluster data are well fit by a Schechter function with alpha fixed at -1.25, and that <=10% of these have fitted values of M* that disagree from the average at the 99% confidence level. We further show that fitting only a single parameter Schechter function to composite subsets of the data can give erroneous results for the derived M*. By considering two parameter fits, the results of Monte-Carlo simulations and direct two-sample chi-squared tests we conclude that there is only weak evidence for differences between the data when broken down into subsets based on physical properties (Bautz-Morgan class, richness, velocity dispersion): from our simulations, only the evidence for a difference between subsets based on velocity dispersion may in fact be significant. We find no evidence at all that a Schechter function is not a good model for the intrinsic cluster luminosity function over this absolute magnitude range. Models that invoke strong evolution of galaxy luminosity of all galaxies within clusters are inconsistent with our results. △ Less

The ESP survey is intermediate between shallow, wide angle samples and very deep, one-dimensional pencil beams: spanning a volume of ~ 5 x 10^4 Mpc^3 at the sensitivity peak (z ~ 0.1), it provides an accurate determination of the "local" luminosity function and the mean galaxy density. We find that, although a Schechter function is an acceptable representation of the luminosity function over the entire range of magnitudes (M < -12.4), our data suggest the presence of a steepening of the luminosity function for M > -17. The amplitude and the alpha and M^* parameters of our luminosity function are in good agreement with those of the AUTOFIB redshift survey (Ellis et al. 1996). Viceversa, our amplitude is significantly higher, by a factor ~ 1.6 at M ~ M^*, than that found for both the Stromlo-APM (Loveday et al. 1992) and the Las Campanas (Lin et al. 1996) redshift surveys. Also the faint end slope of our luminosity function is significantly steeper than that found in these two surveys. Large over- and under- densities are clearly seen in our data. In particular, we find evidence for a "local" underdensity (for D < 140 Mpc) and a significant overdensity at z ~ 0.1. When these radial density variations are taken into account, our derived luminosity function reproduces very well the observed counts for b_J < 19.4, including the steeper than Euclidean slope for b_J < 17. △ Less

The ESP covers 23.3 square degrees in a region close to the South Galactic Pole. The survey is nearly complete (85%) to the limiting magnitude b_J=19.4 and consists of 3342 galaxies with reliable redshift determination. In this paper, the first in a series that will present the results of the ESP survey, we describe the main characteristics of the survey and briefly discuss the properties of the galaxy sample. From a preliminary spectral analysis of a large sub-sample of 2550 galaxies we find that the fraction of actively star-forming galaxies increases from a few percent for the brightest galaxies up to about 40% for the galaxies fainter than M= -16.5. The most outstanding feature in the ESP redshift distribution is a very significant peak at z ~ 0.1. The detection of similar peaks, at the same distance, in other surveys in the same region of the sky, suggests the presence of a large bidimensional structure perpendicular to the line of sight. The minimum size of this structure would be of the order of 100 x 50 Mpc, comparable with the size of the Great Wall. △ Less

Taken alone, however, this peak would not be statistically distinguishable from a noise fluctuation. Nevertheless, the statistical significance of the detection raises to 99% when one considers the CONDITIONAL probability of finding a peak around THE SAME scale measured by Broadhurst et al. △ Less

Discovery of an Arc System in the Brightest ROSAT Cluster of Galaxies

Its luminosity is $(6.2\pm0.6) \cdot10^{45}$erg s$^{-1}$ (in the range 0.1--2.4~keV). The arcs are most probably gravitationally lensed images of background galaxies. They were found serendipitously during our ongoing large--scale redshift survey of X--… ▽ More We report the discovery of two bright arcs in what turns out to be the brightest X--ray cluster in the ROSAT band ever observed, RXJ1347.5-1145. Its luminosity is $(6.2\pm0.6) \cdot10^{45}$erg s$^{-1}$ (in the range 0.1--2.4~keV). The arcs are most probably gravitationally lensed images of background galaxies. They were found serendipitously during our ongoing large--scale redshift survey of X--ray clusters detected by the ROSAT All Sky Survey. The arcs are almost opposite to each other with respect to the cluster centre, with a distance from it of about $35''$ ($=240 h^{-1}_{50}$ kpc), a radius that enables the probing of a rather large cluster volume. In this Letter we limit ourselves to the discussion of the general optical and X--ray features of this cluster and to the potential implications of the gravitational arcs. A more detailed discussion of the different mass estimates and of the cosmological implications for this exceptional object are left for future work based on more accurate optical and X--ray data, which are currently being collected. △ Less

What is the Small-Scale Velocity Dispersion of Galaxy Pairs?

We have estimated xi(r_p,pi) from the Perseus-Pisces redshift survey, which is now virtually 100\% complete for all morphological types to m_B = 15.5. We detect strong distortions of the iso-correlation contours in xi(r_p,pi). These correspond to a g… ▽ More We present some new results from an ongoing investigation of the anisotropy of the two--point correlation function for optically selected galaxies. We have estimated xi(r_p,pi) from the Perseus-Pisces redshift survey, which is now virtually 100\% complete for all morphological types to m_B = 15.5. These correspond to a global (`cluster' plus `field') pairwise velocity dispersion at 1 h^{-1} Mpc, sigma(1), which is about a factor of two higher than the canonical value \sim 350 km s^{-1} obtained from the CfA1 survey and recently from the 1.2 Jy IRAS redshift survey. However, the variance of this value is still rather strong even within the relatively large volumes surveyed (typically 90$^\circ$ $\times$ 45$^\circ$ $\times$ 100 h^{-1} Mpc). From the largest volume explorable (126 h^{-1} Mpc depth), the best bet for the `cosmic' value of sigma(1) seems to be between 600 and 700 km s^{-1}. However, for a hopefully robust determination of its value we will have to wait for the analyses of the next generation of larger {\tenbf optical} redshift surveys (such as, e.g., the now completed ESP or the forthcoming Sloan Digital Sky Survey). △ Less

A total of 777 galaxy redshifts have been measured in 94 clusters extracted from the digitised Edinburgh Durham Cluster Catalogue. We also present the radial velocity dispersions for 37 clusters. Observational and data reduction techniques are discussed in detail, together with the strategy adopted to determine the mean redshift of a cluster and to identify and discard plausible phantom clusters. Some 10% of our clusters show heavy contamination, indicating that projection is a serious problem for optically selected rich clusters. The median velocity dispersion estimated for a sub--sample of richness R \geq 1 clusters is 742 \pm63 km/sec From a simple comparison with Omega=1 Cold Dark Matter models of structure formation, these results favour a biasing parameter b=1.6-2.0 and are inconsistent with a bias outside of the range b=1.3-2.5. △ Less

Cluster Alignments in the Edinburgh/Milano Cluster Redshift Survey

Sizes of Voids as a test for Dark Matter Models

Abstract: We use the void probability statistics to study the redshift-space galaxy distribution as described by a volume-limited subsample of the Perseus-Pisces survey. We compare the results with the same analysis realized on artificial samples, extracted from high-resolution N-body simulations by reproducing the observational biases of the real data set. Simulations are run for the Cold+HotDM model (CH… ▽ More We use the void probability statistics to study the redshift-space galaxy distribution as described by a volume-limited subsample of the Perseus-Pisces survey. We compare the results with the same analysis realized on artificial samples, extracted from high-resolution N-body simulations by reproducing the observational biases of the real data set. Simulations are run for the Cold+HotDM model (CHDM) and for unbiased and biased (b=1.5) CDM models in a 50 Mpc/h box. We identify galaxies as residing in peaks of the evolved density field. We fragment overmerged structures into individual galaxies so as to reproduce both the correct luminosity function (after assuming M/ L values for the resulting galaxy groups) and the two-point correlation function. Our main result is that a void-probability function (VPF) from the standard CHDM model with fractions 60% cold, 30% hot, 10% barions, exceeds the observational VPF with a high confidence level. CDM models produce smaller VPF independent of the biasing parameter. We verify the robustness of this result against changing the observer position in the simulations and the galaxy identification in the evolved density field. △ Less

Deviations from Hierarchical Clustering in Real and Redshift Space

We use both the Perseus--Pisces redshift survey and the results of high--resolution N--body simulations to explore the consequences of working in redshift space on the detection of deviations from hierarchical clustering. Both for real and simulated data, significant deviations from… ▽ More We discuss the effects of redshift--space distortions on the estimate of high order galaxy correlation functions. We use both the Perseus--Pisces redshift survey and the results of high--resolution N--body simulations to explore the consequences of working in redshift space on the detection of deviations from hierarchical clustering. Both for real and simulated data, significant deviations from hierarchical clustering seem to be present in real space. Their behaviour is coherent with that expected from an initially biased galaxy field, once the displacement from the sites where galaxies formed, due to the nonlinear gravitational evolution, is taken into account. The passage to redshift space has the net effect of filtering out the higher powers required to fit the distribution in real space. This magnifies the distortions operated by nonlinear evolution on the initial distribution, erasing the residual narrow scale range (2--5~$h^{-1}$Mpc) where deviations from hierarchical clustering are still detectable in real space. We conclude that such deviations can hardly be estimated using data in redshift space. △ Less

Modelling the Power Spectrum of Density Fluctuations: A Phenomenological Approach

We first relate the observed large-scale shape of xi(r) to a power-law form for the power spectrum, P(k)\propto k^{-2.2}. For a plausible value of the bia… ▽ More We show how, based on considerations on the observed form of the galaxy 2-point spatial correlation function xi(r), a very simplified -- yet surprisingly effective -- model for the linear density fluctuations power spectrum can be constructed. We first relate the observed large-scale shape of xi(r) to a power-law form for the power spectrum, P(k)\propto k^{-2.2}. For a plausible value of the bias parameter b = 1/sigma_8 ~ 1.8, one has (delta_rho / rho)_{rms} ~ 1 r ~ 3.5/h Mpc, suggesting that the change of slope observed in xi(r) around this scale marks the transition between the linear and nonlinear gravitational regimes. Under this working hypothesis, we use a simple analytical form to fit the large-scale correlations constraints together with the COBE CMB anisotropy measurement, thus constructing a simple phenomenological model for the linear power spectrum. Despite its simplicity, the model fits remarkably well directly estimated power spectra from different optical galaxy samples, and when evolved through an N-body simulation it provides a good match to the observed galaxy correlations. One of the most interesting features of the model is the small-scale one-dimensional velocity dispersion produced: sigma_{1d} = 450 Km s^{-1} at 0.5/h Mpc and sigma_{1d} = 350 Km s^{-1} for separations larger than ~ 2/h Mpc. △ Less
