In this paper, we review and compare HPM sources operating without a magnetic field to guide the electron beam that are capable of producing high-power microwave (HPM) pulses with a duration of about 100 ns. The proposed analysis summarizes multi-year research carried with three types of HPM sources: a split-cavity oscillator (SCO); an axial vircator; and a virtual cathode oscillator in Reflex Triode geometry. These options were simulated for electron beam energy $\sim$400 keV and for pulsers with demonstrated capability to provide high power microwave pulses with the required pulse duration. Designed sources were experimentally tested, and their advantages and weaknesses are discussed with respect to high output power, long pulse duration, and good operating stability.

Until recently, the interaction of electromagnetic waves with crystals built from parallel metallic wires (wire media) was analyzed in the approximation of isotropic scattering of the electromagnetic wave by a single wire. However, if the wires are thick (kR~1), electromagnetic wave scattering by a wire is anisotropic, i.e., the scattering amplitude depends on the scattering angle. In this work, we derive the equations that describe diffraction of electromagnetic waves and spontaneous emission of charged particles in wire media, and take into account the angular dependence of scattering amplitude. Numerical solutions of these equations show that the radiation intensity increases as the wire radius is increased and achieves its maximal value in the range kR~1. The case when the condition kR~1 is fulfilled in the THz frequency range is considered in detail. The calculations show that the instantaneous power of Cherenkov and parametric (quasi-Cherenkov) radiations from electron bunches in the crystal can be tens--hundreds megawatts, i.e., high enough to allow experimental observation as well as possible practical applications.

Abstract:
Triode reflex geometry vircator operating within 3.0 - 4.2 GHz range with efficiency up to 6% is developed and experimentally investigated. Shiftable reflectors are shown to enable frequency tuning and output power control. Radiation frequency and power are analyzed for different cathode-anode gap values and varied reflector positions.

This paper considers the refraction and diffraction of waves in three-dimensional crystals formed by anisotropically scattering centers. The partial wave expansion method is used to consider the effect of multiple rescattering of waves by centers composing a crystal. The expression for the refractive index of a crystal is derived. It is shown that instead of the diagonal elements of the scattering matrix $\mathbf{T}$, appearing in the expression for the refractive index of a chaotic medium, the derived expression includes the diagonal elements of the reaction matrix $\mathbf{K}$. This fact is taken into account in writing the equations describing the dynamical diffraction of waves in a crystal.
The results can be of interest for research into, e.g., diffraction of cold neutrons and photons in crystals, nanocrystalline materials, as well as for the description of parametric and diffraction radiation in electromagnetic crystals formed by anisotropically scattering centers.

Refraction and diffraction of waves in natural crystals and artificial crystals formed by anisotropically scattering centers are considered. A detailed study of the electromagnetic wave refraction in a two-dimensional photonic crystal formed by parallel threads is given by way of example. The expression is derived for the effective amplitude of wave scattering by a thread (in a crystal) for the case when scattering by a single thread in a vacuum is anisotropic. It is established that for a wave with orthogonal polarization, unlike a wave with parallel polarization, the index of refraction in crystals built from metallic threads can be greater than unity, and Vavilov-Chrernkov radiation becomes possible in them. The set of equations describing the dynamical diffraction of waves in crystals is derived for the case when scattering by a single center in a vacuum is anisotropic. Because a most general approach is applied to the description of the scattering process, the results thus obtained are valid for a wide range of cases without being restricted to either electromagnetic waves or crystals built from threads.

The radiative instability of the relativistic electron beam in a periodic dielectric-filled cylindrical waveguide is considered. The dependence of the beam instability increment on the radiated wave frequency near the region of dispersion equation roots degeneracy is studied. It is shown that sharp change in the instability of the beam under the conditions of two-wave diffraction in Compton generation regime, making the increment proportional to the fourth root from the beam density $ρ^{1/4}$ in contrast to conventional law $ρ^{1/3}$, brings radiation generation (amplification) in the considered system to be essentially improved in comparison with conventional devices (BWO, TWT, FEL etc). Numerical calculations of the instability increment for various parameters of the system are performed.
