The MUonE experiment aims at providing a new independent evaluation of the leading hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The proposed method is based on the measurement of the running of the QED coupling in the space-like momentum region, through the elastic scattering of high-energy muons on atomic electrons. In this proceeding, the status of the theoretical effort for the MUonE experiment is reviewed. In order to achieve a competitive determination, the differential cross section of muon-electron scattering must be computed with an unprecedented precision of 10 ppm, which requires at least next-to-next-leading order corrections and the resummation of large logarithms. In addition, the simulation of the experiment needs an exhaustive theoretical description of the possible background processes, such as the lepton pair production in muon-nucleus scattering. All these processes must be implemented in a fully exclusive Monte Carlo event generator in order to be used in the MUonE data analysis.

The MUonE experiment aims at providing a novel determination of the leading hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment through the study of elastic muon-electron scattering. Since the initial-state electrons are bound in a low-$Z$ atomic target, the interaction between the incoming muons and the nuclei is expected to be the main source of experimental background. In this article, we study the production of a real lepton pair from the muon-nucleus scattering, discussing its numerical impact in the MUonE kinematic configuration. The process is described as a scattering of a muon in an external Coulomb field with the addition of a form factor to describe the nuclear charge distribution. The calculation is implemented in the fully differential Monte Carlo event generator MESMER, without introducing any approximation on the angular variables.

Looking for an axion in a haystack of muons
Authors:
A. Gurgone
Abstract:
The search for axion-like particles $X$ in muon decays is an excellent opportunity for the MEG II and Mu3e experiments to extend their horizons beyond $μ^+ \to e^+ γ$ and $μ^+ \to e^+ e^- e^+$. A suitable process for both experiments is the two-body decay $μ^+ \to e^+ X$, whose only signature is a monochromatic peak close to the kinematic endpoint of the positron energy spectrum of the…

The search for axion-like particles $X$ in muon decays is an excellent opportunity for the MEG II and Mu3e experiments to extend their horizons beyond $μ^+ \to e^+ γ$ and $μ^+ \to e^+ e^- e^+$. A suitable process for both experiments is the two-body decay $μ^+ \to e^+ X$, whose only signature is a monochromatic peak close to the kinematic endpoint of the positron energy spectrum of the $μ^+ \to e^+ ν_e \barν_μ$ background. The hunt for such an elusive signal in a vast amount of irreducible background requires extremely accurate theoretical predictions to be implemented in a Monte Carlo event generator. This work presents a new state-of-the-art computation of $μ^+ \to e^+ ν_e \barν_μ$ for polarised muons, accomplished with the McMule framework. The calculation includes next-to-next-leading order QED corrections and logarithmically enhanced terms at even higher orders. The results are also used to estimate the sensitivity of both experiments on the branching ratio of $μ^+ \to e^+ X$, in order to evaluate the impact of the theoretical error.

Abstract:
The physics programme of the MEG II experiment can be extended with the search for new invisible particles produced in rare muon decays. The hunt for such elusive signals requires accurate simulations to characterise the detector response and estimate the experimental sensitivity. This work presents an improved simulation of muon decay in MEG II, based on McMule and Geant4.

We present an improved theoretical prediction of the positron energy spectrum for the polarised Michel decay $μ^+\to e^+ ν_e\barν_μ$. In addition to the full next-to-next-to-leading order correction of order $α^2$ in the electromagnetic coupling, we include logarithmically enhanced terms at even higher orders. Logarithms due to collinear emission are included at next-to-leading accuracy up to order $α^4$. At the endpoint of the Michel spectrum, soft photon emission results in large logarithms that are resummed up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We apply our results in the context of the MEG II and Mu3e experiments to estimate the impact of the theory error on the branching ratio sensitivity for the lepton-flavour-violating decay $μ^+\to e^+ X$ of a muon into an axion-like particle $X$.
