Signal-dependent beamformers are advantageous over signal-independent beamformers when the acoustic scenario - be it real-world or simulated - is straightforward in terms of the number of sound sources, the ambient sound field and their dynamics. However, in the context of augmented reality audio using head-worn microphone arrays, the acoustic scenarios encountered are often far from straightforward. The design of robust, high-performance, adaptive beamformers for such scenarios is an on-going challenge. This is due to the violation of the typically required assumptions on the noise field caused by, for example, rapid variations resulting from complex acoustic environments, and/or rotations of the listener's head. This work proposes a multi-channel speech enhancement algorithm which utilises the adaptability of signal-dependent beamformers while still benefiting from the computational efficiency and robust performance of signal-independent super-directive beamformers. The algorithm has two stages. (i) The first stage is a hybrid beamformer based on a dictionary of weights corresponding to a set of noise field models. (ii) The second stage is a wide-band subspace post-filter to remove any artifacts resulting from (i). The algorithm is evaluated using both real-world recordings and simulations of a cocktail-party scenario. Noise suppression, intelligibility and speech quality results show a significant performance improvement by the proposed algorithm compared to the baseline super-directive beamformer. A data-driven implementation of the noise field dictionary is shown to provide more noise suppression, and similar speech intelligibility and quality, compared to a parametric dictionary.

A two-stage multi-channel speech enhancement method is proposed which consists of a novel adaptive beamformer, Hybrid Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR), Isotropic-MVDR (Iso), and a novel multi-channel spectral Principal Components Analysis (PCA) denoising. In the first stage, the Hybrid-MVDR performs multiple MVDRs using a dictionary of pre-defined noise field models and picks the minimum-power outcome, which benefits from the robustness of signal-independent beamforming and the performance of adaptive beamforming. In the second stage, the outcomes of Hybrid and Iso are jointly used in a two-channel PCA-based denoising to remove the 'musical noise' produced by Hybrid beamformer. On a dataset of real 'cocktail-party' recordings with head-worn array, the proposed method outperforms the baseline superdirective beamformer in noise suppression (fwSegSNR, SDR, SIR, SAR) and speech intelligibility (STOI) with similar speech quality (PESQ) improvement.

Super-Resolution (SR) is a technique that seeks to upscale the resolution of a set of measured signals. SR retrieves higher-frequency signal content by combining multiple lower resolution sampled data sets. SR is well known both in the temporal and spatial domains. It is widely used in imaging to reduce aliasing and enhance the resolution of coarsely sampled images. This paper applies the SR technique to the bi-dimensional wavefront reconstruction. In particular, we show how SR is intrinsically suited for tomographic multi WaveFront Sensor (WFS) AO systems revealing many of its advantages with minimal design effort. This paper provides a direct space and Fourier-optics description of the wavefront sensing operation and demonstrate how SR can be exploited through signal reconstruction, especially in the framework of Periodic Nonuniform Sampling. Both meta uniform and nonuniform sampling schemes are investigated. Then, the SR bi-dimensional model for a Shack Hartmann (SH) WFS is provided and the characteristics of the sensitivity function are analyzed. The SR concept is finally validated with numerical simulations of representative multi WFS SH AO systems. Our results show that combining several WFS samples in a SR framework grants access to a larger number of modes than the native one offered by a single WFS and that despite the fixed sub-aperture size across samples. Furthermore, we show that the associated noise propagation is not degraded under SR. Finally, the concept is extended to the signal produced by single Pyramid WFS. In conclusion, SR applied to wavefront reconstruction offers a new parameter space to explore as it decouples the size of the subaperture from the desired wavefront sampling resolution. By cutting short with old assumptions, new, more flexible and better performing AO designs become now possible.

We study the asymptotic dynamics of piecewise contracting maps defined on a compact interval. For maps that are not necessarily injective, but have a finite number of local extrema and discontinuity points, we prove the existence of a decomposition of the support of the asymptotic dynamics into a finite number of minimal components. Each component is either a periodic orbit or a minimal Cantor set and such that the $ω$-limit set of (almost) every point in the interval is exactly one of these components. Moreover, we show that each component is the $ω$-limit set, or the closure of the orbit, of a one-sided limit of the map at a discontinuity point or at a local extremum.

We also prove that the growth rate of the complexity is bounded from above by the number $N-1$ of discontinuities of the map. To show that this bound is optimal, we construct piecewise affine contracting maps whose itineraries all have the complexity $(N-1)n +1$. In these examples, the asymptotic dynamics takes place in a minimal Cantor set containing all the discontinuities.

We study the asymptotic dynamics of maps which are piecewise contracting on a compact space. These maps are Lipschitz continuous, with Lipschitz constant smaller than one, when restricted to any piece of a finite and dense union of disjoint open pieces. We focus on the topological and the dynamical properties of the (global) attractor of the orbits that remain in this union. As a starting point, we show that the attractor consists of a finite set of periodic points when it does not intersect the boundary of a contraction piece, which complements similar results proved for more specific classes of piecewise contracting maps. Then, we explore the case where the attractor intersects these boundaries by providing examples that show the rich phenomenology of these systems. Due to the discontinuities, the asymptotic behaviour is not always properly represented by the dynamics in the attractor. Hence, we introduce generalized orbits to describe the asymptotic dynamics and its recurrence and transitivity properties. Our examples include transitive and recurrent attractors, that are either finite, countable, or a disjoint union of a Cantor set and a countable set. We also show that the attractor of a piecewise contracting map is usually a Lebesgue measure-zero set, and we give conditions ensuring that it is totally disconnected. Finally, we provide an example of piecewise contracting map with positive topological entropy and whose attractor is an interval.

We study the global dynamics of integrate and fire neural networks composed of an arbitrary number of identical neurons interacting by inhibition and excitation. We prove that if the interactions are strong enough, then the support of the stable asymptotic dynamics consists of limit cycles. We also find sufficient conditions for the synchronization of networks containing excitatory neurons. The proofs are based on the analysis of the equivalent dynamics of a piecewise continuous Poincaré map associated to the system. We show that for strong interactions the Poincaré map is piecewise contractive. Using this contraction property, we prove that there exist a countable number of limit cycles attracting all the orbits drop** into the stable subset of the phase space. This result applies not only to the Poincaré map under study, but also to a wide class of general n-dimensional piecewise contractive maps.

The present work investigates free damped oscillations of an oil drop in water after its release from a capillary tube. Both pure heptane drops and diluted crude oil drops are considered (in the second case the interface is covered by amphiphilic species, natural components of crude oil). Shadowgraph images of the drops are taken by means of a high speed camera and the drop contour is detected by image processing. The axisymmetric drop shape is then decomposed into spherical harmonics, which constitute the eigenmodes of oscillations predicted by the Rayleigh-Lamb theory. Time evolution of each mode is then obtained. The frequency and the dam** rate of the principal mode (n=2) are accurately determined and compared with theoretical values for an immobile clean drop oscillating around spherical shape. For pure heptane drops, theoretical value of the frequency agrees well with experiments whereas the dam** rate is significantly underestimated by theory. The experimental results clearly show that the different modes are coupled. Energy is thus transfered from mode n=2 to n=3, which probably explains the observed enhancement of the dam** rate. The effect of the interface viscoelastic behaviour, induced by adsorbed amphiphilic species on the free oscillations was examined. No significant effect was observed in the experiments conditions (small amplitude oscillations and moderate aging).

This potential splits into an interaction potential and a potential induced by an underlying substrate which is a quasicrystal. Under standard hypotheses, we show that every minimal configuration has a rotation number, that the rotation number varies continuously with the minimal configuration, and that every non negative real number is the rotation number of a minimal configuration. This generalizes well known results obtained by S. Aubry and P.Y. le Daeron in the case of a crystalline substrate.

Two-dimensional map**s obtained by coupling two piecewise increasing expanding maps are considered. Their dynamics is described when the coupling parameter increases in the expanding domain. By introducing a coding and by analysing an admissibility condition, approximations of the corresponding symbolic systems are obtained. These approximations imply that the topological entropy is located between two decreasing step functions of the coupling parameter. The analysis firstly applies to map**s with piecewise affine local maps which allow explicit expressions and, in a second step, is extended by continuity to map**s with piecewise smooth local maps.
