Recently achieved chiral condensates open intriguing avenues for the study of the chiral properties induced by current-density interactions. An attempt to include these features in a spinor system is presented, which gives rise to a nonlinear, effective spin-orbit coupling that emerges from the differential orbital currents, along with constraints in the conserved quantities due to the linear coupling between spin components. Chirality pervades the resulting spectrum of stationary states and their dynamical stability, which are explored in plane waves, dark and bright solitons, and Josephson vortices. Our analytical and numerical results reveal the destabilizing role of polarization and Josephson currents, and support the existence of stable nonlinear states built of linear superpositions of plane waves.

By diagonalizing the extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we investigate the ground state properties of the system as we rotate the dipole angle and vary the on-site and dipole-dipole interaction strengths. We find that the anisotropic character of the dipolar interactions, as well as the competition between dipole and on-site interactions lead to different ground states and that the entanglement between sites also depends on the number of particles. We further characterize the system by studying the condensed fraction and coherence properties for different polarization angles, highlighting the possible effect of the dipolar interaction as manipulation tool.

Persistent currents in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates become chiral in the presence of current-density interactions. This phenomenon is explored in ultracold atoms loaded in a rotating ring geometry, where diverse current-carrying stationary states are analytically found to generalize previously known solutions to the mean-field equations of motion. Their dynamical stability is tested by numerical simulations that show stable currents for states with both constant and modulated density profiles, while decaying currents appear only beyond a unidirectional velocity threshold. We show that a mixture of two antiparallel dipolar condensates allows for the creation of potentially large, self-bound crystals which, resembling ionic crystals in solid-state physics, are maintained by the mutual dipolar attraction between the components, with no need of transversal confinement. This opens intriguing novel possibilities, including three-dimensionally self-bound droplet-ring structures, stripe/labyrinthic patterns, and self-bound crystals of droplets surrounded by an interstitial superfluid, resembling the case of superfluid Helium in porous media.

We first analyze the effects of the anisotropic nature of the dipolar interactions, which already appear in the absence of gravity and are enhanced when the polarization axis of the dipoles and the gravity are slightly misaligned. Then, in the small gravity context, we investigate the dynamics of small oscillations of these thin, shell-shaped condensates triggered either by an instantaneous tilting of the gravity direction or by a sudden change of the gravity strength. We analyze a notable class of states relevant to an immiscible bosonic binary mixture loaded in a rotating box-like circular trap, i.e. states where vortices in one species host the atoms of the other species, which thus play the role of massive cores. Within a fully-analytical framework, we calculate the equilibrium distance distinguishing the motion of precession of two corotating massive vortices, the angular momentum of each component, the vortices healing length and the characteristic size of the cores. We then compare these previsions with the measures extracted from the numerical solutions of the associated coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Interestingly, making use of a suitable change of reference frame, we show that vortices drag the massive cores which they host thus conveying them their same motion of precession, but that there is no evidence of tangential entrainment between the two fluids, since the cores keep their orientation constant while orbiting.

The quantum dynamics of population-balanced fractional vortices and population-imbalanced vortices in an effective two-state bosonic system, made of two coupled discrete circuits with few sites, is addressed within the Bose-Hubbard model. % We show that for low on-site interaction, the tunneling of quantized vortices between the rings performs a coherent, oscillating dynamics connecting current states with chiral symmetry. The vortex-flux transfer dually follows the usual sinusoidal particle current of the Josephson effect, in good agreement with a mean-field approximation. Within such regime, the switch of persistent currents in the rings resembles flux-qubit features, and is feasible to experimental realization. On the contrary, strong interatomic interactions suppress the chiral current and lead the system into fragmented condensation.

The stacks of Bose-Einstein condensates coupled by long Josephson junctions present a rich phenomenology feasible to experimental realization and specially suitable for technological applications as the nonlinear-optics and superconducting analogues have already proved. Among this, we show that transverse Bloch waves excited in arrays of one-dimensional coupled condensates can carry tunneling superflows whose dynamical stability depends on the quasimomentum. Across the stacks with periodic boundary conditions, forming closed ring-shaped systems, such Bloch states yield transverse Josephson vortices with a generic non-integer circulation in units of $h/m$. Additionally, the superpositions of degenerate linear Bloch waves can suppress the supercurrents and give rise to families of nonlinear standing-wave states with strong (transverse) spatial localization. Stable states of this type can also be found in finite size systems.

We have investigated self-bound binary ultra dilute bosonic mixtures at zero temperature within Density Functional Theory using a Local Density Approximation. We provide the explicit expression of the Lee-Huang-Yang correction in the general case of heteronuclear mixtures, and investigate the general thermodynamic conditions which lead to the formation of self-bound systems. We have determined the conditions for stability against the evaporation of one component, as well as the mechanical and diffusive spinodal lines. We have also calculated the surface tension of the self-bound state as a function of the inter-species interaction strength. We find that relatively modest changes of the latter result in order-of-magnitude changes in the calculated surface tension. We suggest experimental realizations which might display the metastability and phase separation of the mixture when entering regions of the phase diagram characterized by negative pressures. Finally, we show that these droplets may sustain stable vortex and vortex dimers.

We report on the existence and stability of multidimensional bound solitonic states in harmonically-trapped scalar Bose-Einstein condensates. Their equilibrium separation, as a measure of the strength of the soliton-soliton or the solitonic vortex-vortex interaction, is provided for varying chemical potential $μ$. Static bound dark solitons are shown to be dynamically stable in elongated condensates within a range of intermediate (repulsive) interparticle-interaction strength. Beyond this range the snaking instability manifests during the time evolution of the planar solitons and produces the decay into non-stationary vortex states. A subsequent dynamical recurrence of solitons and vortices can be observed at low $μ$. At equilibrium, the bifurcations of bound dark solitons are bound solitonic vortices. Among them, both two-open and two-ring vortex lines are demonstrated to exist with both counter- and co-rotating steady velocity fields. The latter flow configurations evolve, for high chemical potential, into a stationary 3D-chain-shaped vortex and a three vortex-antivortex-vortex ring sequence that arrest the otherwise increasing angular or linear momentum respectively. As a common feature to the bifurcated vortex states, their excitation spectra present unstable modes with associated oscillatory dynamics.

Bosonic two-ring ladders constitute an important class of atomtronic circuits, where coherent current flows not only can offer a new insight into many-body physics, but also can play the role of actual degrees of freedom, and hence allow for a viable implementation of cold-atom based devices and qubit systems. In this work, we exhaustively investigate the ground state properties and the low-lying energy spectrum of two linearly coupled Bose-Hubbard rings. We show that the competition among interactions, intra- and inter-ring hop** processes gives place to a rather rich physical scenario, where Mott-like states and (different kinds of) superfluid-like states emerge. The latter ones depend also on the (in)commensurate filling of the atoms. Our analysis, carried out within a simple analytical framework and by means of the exact numerical diagonalization of the system Hamiltonian, provides one with a rather complete characterization of the static properties of the two-ring ladder, including, but not limited to, coherence, fragmentation, correlations, and entanglement. We complement our investigation by studying how these indicators depend on the commensurability of the total number of bosons with respect to the total number of sites and show that the two stacked rings are always entangled for an odd number of atoms.

We study the quantum hydrodynamical features of exciton-polaritons flowing circularly in a ring-shaped geometry. We consider a resonant-excitation scheme in which the spinor polariton fluid is set into motion in both components by spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion. We show that this scheme allows to control the winding number of the fluid, and to create two circulating states differing by two units of the angular momentum. We then consider the effect of a disorder potential, which is always present in realistic nanostructures. We show that a smooth disorder is efficiently screened by the polariton-polariton interactions, yielding a signature of polariton superfluidity. This effect is reminiscent of supercurrent in a superconducting loop.

Lattice gases in the strongly correlated regime have been proven to simulate quantum magnetic models under certain conditions: the map** of the double-well system onto the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick spin model is a paradigmatic case. A suitable definition of the length in the Hilbert space of the system leads to the concept of a correlation length, whose divergence is a characteristic property of continuous quantum phase transitions. We calculate the finite-size scaling of some observables like e.g. the magnetization or the population imbalance, as well as of the Schmidt gap, obtaining in this way the critical exponents associated to such transitions. The systematic definition of the Schmidt gap in extended Hamiltonians provides a good tool to analyze the set of critical exponents associated to transitions in systems formed by a larger number of traps. This demonstrates, thus, the potential use of mesoscopic Bose-Einstein condensates as quantum simulators of condensed matter systems.

We analyze the generation of persistent currents in Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold gases confined in a ring. This phenomenon has been recently investigated in an experiment [Nature \textbf{506}, 200 (2014)], where hysteresis loops have been observed in the activation of quantized persistent currents by rotating weak links. In this work, we demonstrate the existence of 3D stationary currents with non-quantized angular momentum. They are generated by families of solitary waves that show a continuous variation in the angular momentum, and provide a bridge between different winding numbers. We show that the size of hysteresis loops is determined by the range of existence within the weak link region of solitary waves which configure the energy barrier preventing phase slips. The barrier vanishes when the critical rotation leads winding numbers and solitonic states to a matching configuration. At this point, Landau and Feynman criteria for phase slips meet: the fluid flow reaches the local speed of sound, and stationary vortex lines (which are the building blocks of solitons) can be excited inside the system.

We consider a Bose-Hubbard trimer, i.e. an ultracold Bose gas populating three quantum states. The latter can be either different sites of a triple-well potential or three internal states of the atoms. The bosons can tunnel between different states with variable tunnelling strength between two of them. This will allow us to study; i) different geometrical configurations, i.e. from a closed triangle to three aligned wells and ii) a triangular configuration with a $π$-phase, i.e. by setting one of the tunnellings negative. By solving the corresponding three-site Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we obtain the ground state of the system as a function of the trap topology. We characterise the different ground states by means of the coherence and entanglement properties. For small repulsive interactions, fragmented condensates are found for the $π$-phase case. These are found to be robust against small variations of the tunnelling in the small interaction regime. A low-energy effective many-body Hamiltonian restricted to the degenerate manifold provides a compelling description of the $π$-phase degeneration and explains the low-energy spectrum as excitations of discrete semifluxon states.

Mesoscopic interacting Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a few traps display phase transitions that cannot be explained with a mean field theory. By describing each trap as an effective site of a Bose-Hubbard model and using the Schwinger representation of spin operators, these systems can be mapped to spin models. We show that it is possible to define correlations between bosons in such a way that critical behavior is associated to the divergence of a correlation length accompanied by a gapless spectrum in the thermodynamic limit. The latter is now defined as the limit in which the mean field analysis becomes valid. Such description provides critical exponents to the associated phase transitions and encompasses the notion of universality demonstrating thus the potential use of mesoscopic Bose-Einstein condensates as quantum simulators of condensed matter systems.

We investigate long-range effects of the dipolar interaction in Bose-Einstein condensates by solving the time-dependent 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We study the propagation of excitations between non-overlap** condensates when a collective mode is excited in one of the condensates. We obtain the frequency shifts due to the long-range character of the dipolar coupling for the bilayer and also the trilayer system when the dipolar mode is excited in one condensate. The propagation of the monopolar and quadrupolar modes are also investigated. The coupled-pendulum model is proposed to qualitatively explain the long range effects of the dipolar coupling.

A dipolar condensate confined in a toroidal trap constitutes a self-induced Josepshon junction when the dipoles are oriented perpendicularly to the trap symmetry axis and the s-wave scattering length is small enough. The ring-shaped double-well potential coming from the anisotropic character of the mean-field dipolar interaction is robust enough to sustain self-trap** dynamics, which takes place when the initial population imbalance between the two wells is large. We show that in this system the self-trap** regime is directly related to a vortex-induced phase-slip dynamics. A vortex and antivortex are spontaneously nucleated in the low density regions, before a minimum of the population imbalance is reached, and then cross the toroidal section in opposite directions through the junctions. This vortex dynamics yields a phase slip between the two weakly linked condensates causing an inversion of the particle flux.

Polarizing the atoms perpendicularly to the trap symmetry axis, an effective ring-shaped, double-well potential is achieved which is induced by the dipolar interaction. We present a study of binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a double-well potential within the framework of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We reexamine both the single component and the binary mixture cases for such a potential, and we investigate in which situations a simpler two-mode approach leads to an accurate description of their dynamics. We also estimate the validity of the most usual dimensionality reductions used to solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. To this end, we compare both the semi-analytical two-mode approaches and the numerical simulations of the 1D reductions with the full 3D numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our analysis provides a guide to clarify the validity of several simplified models that describe mean field non-linear dynamics, using an experimentally feasible binary mixture of an F=1 spinor condensate with two of its Zeeman manifolds populated, m=+1 and m=-1.

We study a Bose-Einstein condensate of 52Cr atoms confined in a toroidal trap with a variable strength of s-wave contact interactions. We analyze the effects of the anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction by considering the magnetization axis to be perpendicular to the trap symmetry axis. In the absence of a central repulsive barrier, when the trap is purely harmonic, the effect of reducing the scattering length is a tuning of the geometry of the system: from a pancake-shaped condensate when it is large, to a cigar-shaped condensate for small scattering lengths. For a condensate in a toroidal trap, the interaction in combination with the central repulsive Gaussian barrier produces an azimuthal dependence of the particle density for a fixed radial distance. We find that along the magnetization direction the density decreases as the scattering length is reduced but presents two symmetric density peaks in the perpendicular axis. For even lower values of the scattering length we observe that the system undergoes a dipolar-induced symmetry breaking phenomenon. The whole density becomes concentrated in one of the peaks, resembling an origin-displaced cigar-shaped condensate. In this context we also analyze stationary vortex states and their associated velocity field, finding that this latter also shows a strong azimuthal dependence for small scattering lengths. The expectation value of the angular momentum along the z direction provides a qualitative measure of the difference between the velocity in the different density peaks.

The behavior of the condensate is studied under three different situations concerning the interactions: only s-wave, s-wave plus dipolar and only dipolar. The energy barrier for the nucleation of a vortex is calculated as a function of the vortex displacement from the rotation axis in the three cases. These results are compared to those obtained for contact interaction condensates in the Thomas-Fermi approximation, and to a pseudo-analytical model, showing this latter a very good agreement with the numerical calculation.

We derive two-mode equations relating the population imbalances, the phase differences among the condensates at each side of the barrier and the time evolution of the different Zeeman populations for the case of small population imbalances. The case of zero total magnetization is scrutinized in this limit demonstrating the ability of a two mode analysis to describe to a large extent the dynamics observed in the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. It is also demonstrated that the time evolution of the different total populations fully decouples from the Josephson tunneling phenomena. All the relevant time scales are clearly identified with microscopic properties of the atom-atom interactions.

We investigate the properties of a single vortex and calculate the critical angular velocity for different values of the s-wave scattering length. We show that, whereas the standard variational approach breaks down in the limit of pure dipolar interactions, exact solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation can be obtained for values of the s-wave scattering length down to zero. The energy barrier for the nucleation of a vortex is calculated as a function of the vortex displacement from the rotation axis for different values of the angular velocity of the rotating trap.

In the balanced population case the Josephson oscillations unveal a dependence with the different spin collision channels. This effect could be used to experimentally measure the distinct scattering lengths entering in the description of a spinor condensate. We consider that the fermions are in the degenerate regime and that the laser intensities are such that quantum coherence across the condensate is ensured. We discuss the effect of the optical lattice on the critical rotational frequency for vortex line creation in the Bose-Einstein condensate, as well as how it affects the stability of the boson-fermion mixture. A reduction of the critical frequency for nucleating a vortex is observed as the strength of the applied laser is increased. The onset of instability of the mixture occurs for a sizeably lower number of fermions in the presence of a deep optical lattice.

Our calculations indicate that the existence of ring vortices in the mixture is a possible mechanism to understand the rather small degree of critical supersaturation found in the experiments.

The density of states of a Bose-condensed gas confined in a harmonic trap is investigated. The predictions of Bogoliubov theory are compared with the ones of Hartree-Fock theory and of the hydrodynamic model. We show that the Hartree-Fock scheme provides an excellent description of the excitation spectrum in a wide range of energy, revealing a major role played by single-particle excitations in these confined systems. The crossover from the hydrodynamic regime, holding at low energies, to the independent particle regime is explicitly explored by studying the frequency of the surface mode as a function of their angular momentum. The applicability of the semiclassical approximation for the excited states is also discussed. We show that the semiclassical approach provides simple and accurate formulae for the density of states and the quantum depletion of the condensate.

Abstract:
We study the scattering of atoms, rotons and phonons at the free surface of $^4$He at normal incidence and calculate the evaporation, condensation and reflection probabilities. Assuming elastic one-to-one processes and using general properties of the scattering matrix, such as unitarity and time reversal, we argue that all nonzero probabilities can be written in terms of a single energy-dependen…

We study the scattering of atoms, rotons and phonons at the free surface of $^4$He at normal incidence and calculate the evaporation, condensation and reflection probabilities. Assuming elastic one-to-one processes and using general properties of the scattering matrix, such as unitarity and time reversal, we argue that all nonzero probabilities can be written in terms of a single energy-dependent parameter. Quantitative predictions are obtained using linearized time dependent density functional theory.
