We define Hochschild cohomology of the second kind for differential graded (dg) or curved algebras as a derived functor in a compactly generated derived category of the second kind, and show that it is invariant under Morita equivalence of the second kind. A bimodule version of Koszul duality is constructed and used to show that Hochschild cohomology of the second kind is preserved under (nonconilpotent) Koszul duality. Hochschild cohomology of the second kind of an algebra often computes the ordinary Hochschild cohomology of geometrically meaningful dg categories. Examples include the category of infinity local systems on a topological space, the bounded derived category of a complex algebraic manifold and the category of matrix factorizations.

We prove that the (homotopy) hypercommutative algebra structure on the de Rham cohomology of a Poisson or Jacobi manifold defined by several authors is (homotopically) trivial, i.e. it reduces to the underlying (homotopy) commutative algebra structure. We do so by showing that the DG operads which codify the algebraic structure on the de Rham complex of Poisson and Jacobi manifolds, generated by the exterior product and the interior products with the structure polyvector fields, are quasi-isomorphic to the commutative suboperad. Hence, there is no hope to endow the de Rham cohomology of such manifolds with any (higher) structure beyond the well-known (homotopy) commutative algebra structure, which exists for any smooth manifold. We proceed similarly with the commutative Batalin-Vilkovisky-infinity algebra structure on the de Rham complex of a generalized Poisson supermanifold.

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model on a two-dimensional square lattice has been considered as a significant platform for studying topological multipole insulators. However, due to the highly-degenerate bulk energy bands protected by $ C_{4v} $ and chiral symmetry, the discussion of the zero-energy topological corner states and the corresponding physical realization have been rarely presented. In this work, by tuning the hop** terms to break $ C_{4v} $ symmetry down to $ C_{2v} $ symmetry but with the topological phase invariant, we show that the degeneracies can be removed and a complete band gap can be opened, which provides robust protection for the spectrally isolated zero-energy corner states. Meanwhile, we propose a rigorous acoustic crystalline insulator and therefore these states can be observed directly. Our work reveals the topological properties of the robust zero-energy states, and provides a new way to explore novel topological phenomena.

Acoustic systems that are without limitations imposed by the Fermi level have been demonstrated as significant platform for the exploration of fruitful topological phases. By surrounding the nontrivial domain with trivial "environment", the domain-wall topological states have been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. In this work, based on the topological crystalline insulator with a kagome lattice, we rigorously derive the corresponding Hamiltonian from the traditional acoustics perspective, and exactly reveal the correspondences of the hop** and onsite terms within acoustic systems. Crucially, these results directly indicate that instead of applying the trivial domain, the soft boundary condition precisely corresponds to the theoretical models which always require generalized chiral symmetry. These results provide a general platform to construct desired acoustic topological devices hosting desired topological phenomena for versatile applications.

The bulk band topology of symmetry invariant adiabatic systems in the thermodynamic limit are considered to be determined by the hop** energy. In this work, we present that in closed classical systems, due to generalized chiral symmetry broken, the on-site energy cannot always be regarded as identical and can crucially impact the topological properties of the systems. Based on a finite one-dimensional chain, we demonstrate that the non-equivalent on-site energy of bulk lattices affects the topological phases of the bands, and the on-site energy of end lattices affects the existence of the topological states. Along these lines, the correspondence with generalized chiral symmetry in acoustic system is rigorously proposed. Our work provides a new degree of freedom for topological classical systems, and can be generalized to higher-dimensions and non-Hermitian conditions.

Abstract:
We give a general treatment of deformation theory from the point of view of homotopical algebra following Hinich, Manetti and Pridham. In particular, we show that any deformation functor in characteristic zero is controlled by a certain differential graded Lie algebra defined up to homotopy, and also formulate a noncommutative analogue of this result valid in any characteristic.

Then we recall the graded Lie algebras and graded associative algebras that characterize these algebraic structures as Maurer-Cartan elements. The corresponding Maurer-Cartan element equips the graded Lie or associative algebra with a differential. Then the deformations of the given algebraic structures are characterized as the Maurer-Cartan elements of the resulting differential graded Lie or associative algebras. We also recall the relation between the cohomologies and the differential graded Lie and associative algebras that control the deformations.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are uniquely-qualified materials for photonics because they combine well defined tunable direct band gaps and selfpassivated surfaces without dangling bonds. However, the atomic thickness of these 2D materials results in low photo absorption limiting the achievable photo luminescence intensity. Such emission can, in principle, be enhanced via nanoscale antennae resulting in; a. an increased absorption cross-section enhancing pump efficiency, b. an acceleration of the internal emission rate via the Purcell factor mainly by reducing the antennas optical mode volume beyond the diffraction limit, and c. improved impedance matching of the emitter dipole to the freespace wavelength. Plasmonic dimer antennae show orders of magnitude hot-spot field enhancements when an emitter is positioned exactly at the midgap. However, a 2D material cannot be grown, or easily transferred, to reside in mid-gap of the metallic dimer cavity. In addition, a spacer layer between the cavity and the emissive material is required to avoid non-radiative recombination channels. Using both computational and experimental methods, in this work we show that the emission enhancement from a 2D emitter- monomer antenna cavity system rivals that of dimers at much reduced lithographic effort. We rationalize this finding by showing that the emission enhancement in dimer antennae does not specifically originate from the gap of the dimer cavity, but is an average effect originating from the effective cavity crosssection taken below each optical cavity where the emitting 2D film is located. In particular, we test an array of different dimer and monomer antenna geometries and observe a representative 3x higher emission for both monomer and dimer cavities as compared to intrinsic emission of Chemical Vapor Deposition synthesized WS2 flakes.

Microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip technologies have made it possible to manipulate small volume liquids with unprecedented resolution, automation and integration. However, most current microfluidic systems still rely on bulky off-chip infrastructures such as compressed pressure sources, syringe pumps and computers to achieve complex liquid manipulation functions. Here, we present a handheld automated microfluidic liquid handling system controlled by a smartphone, which is enabled by combining elastomeric on-chip valves and a compact pneumatic system. As a demonstration, we show that the system can automatically perform all the liquid handling steps of a bead-based sandwich immunoassay on a multi-layer PDMS chip without any human intervention. The footprint of the system is 6 by 10.5 by 16.5cm, and the total weight is 829g including battery. Powered by a 12.8V 1500mAh Li battery, the system consumed 2.2W on average during the immunoassay and lasted for 8.7 hrs. This handheld microfluidic liquid handling platform is generally applicable to many biochemical and cell-based assays requiring complex liquid manipulation and sample preparation steps such as FISH, PCR, flow cytometry and nucleic acid sequencing. In particular, the integration of this technology with read-out biosensors may help enable the realization of the long-sought Tricorder-like handheld in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) systems.
