Magnetic field is one of the key agents that play a crucial role in sha** molecular clouds and regulating star formation, yet the complete information on the magnetic field is not well constrained due to the limitations in observations. We study the magnetic field in the massive infrared dark cloud G035.39-00.33 from dust continuum polarization observations at 850 $\micron$ with SCUBA-2/POL-2 at JCMT. The magnetic field tends to be perpendicular to the densest part of the main filament (F$_{M}$), whereas it has a less defined relative orientation in the rest of the structure, where it tends to be parallel to some diffuse regions. A mean plane-of-the-sky magnetic field strength of $\sim$50 $μ$G for F$_{M}$ is obtained using Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. Based on $^{13}$CO (1-0) line observations, we suggest a formation scenario of F$_{M}$ due to large-scale ($\sim$10 pc) cloud-cloud collision. Using additional NH$_3$ line data, we estimate that F$_{M}$ will be gravitationally unstable if it is only supported by thermal pressure and turbulence. The northern part of F$_{M}$, however, can be stabilized by a modest additional support from the local magnetic field. The middle and southern parts of F$_{M}$ are likely unstable even if the magnetic field support is taken into account. We claim that the clumps in F$_{M}$ may be supported by turbulence and magnetic fields against gravitational collapse. Finally, we identified for the first time a massive ($\sim$200 M$_{\sun}$), collapsing starless clump candidate, "c8", in G035.39-00.33. The magnetic field surrounding "c8" is likely pinched, hinting at an accretion flow along the filament.

We present X-ray source catalogs for the $\approx7$ Ms exposure of the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S), which covers a total area of 484.2 arcmin$^2$. Utilizing WAVDETECT for initial source detection and ACIS Extract for photometric extraction and significance assessment, we create a main source catalog containing 1008 sources that are detected in up to three X-ray bands: 0.5-7.0 keV, 0.5-2.0 keV, and 2-7 keV. A supplementary source catalog is also provided including 47 lower-significance sources that have bright ($K_s\le23$) near-infrared counterparts. We identify multiwavelength counterparts for 992 (98.4%) of the main-catalog sources, and we collect redshifts for 986 of these sources, including 653 spectroscopic redshifts and 333 photometric redshifts. Based on the X-ray and multiwavelength properties, we identify 711 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the main-catalog sources. Compared to the previous $\approx4$ Ms CDF-S catalogs, 291 of the main-catalog sources are new detections. We have achieved unprecedented X-ray sensitivity with average flux limits over the central $\approx1$ arcmin$^2$ region of $\approx1.9\times10^{-17}$, $6.4\times10^{-18}$, and $2.7\times10^{-17}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the three X-ray bands, respectively. We provide cumulative number-count measurements observing, for the first time, that normal galaxies start to dominate the X-ray source population at the faintest 0.5-2.0 keV flux levels. The highest X-ray source density reaches $\approx50\,500$ deg$^{-2}$, and $47\%\pm4\%$ of these sources are AGNs ($\approx23\,900$ deg$^{-2}$).

A detailed analysis is carried out with existing multi-wavelength data in this field. Three of the 56 H$α$ ELGs are detected in Chandra 4 Ms X-ray observation and two of them are classified as AGNs. The rest-frame UV and optical morphologies revealed by HST/ACS and WFC3 deep images show that nearly half of the H$α$ ELGs are either merging systems or with a close companion, indicating that the merging/interacting processes play a key role in regulating star formation at cosmic epoch z=2-3; About 14% are too faint to be resolved in the rest-frame UV morphology due to high dust extinction. We estimate dust extinction from SEDs. We find that dust extinction is generally correlated with H$α$ luminosity and stellar mass (SM). Our results suggest that H$α$ ELGs are representative of star-forming galaxies (SFGs). Applying extinction correction for individual objects, we examine the intrinsic H$α$ luminosity function (LF) at $z=2.24$, obtaining a best-fit Schechter function characterized by a faint-end slope of $α=-1.3$. This is shallower than the typical slope of $α\sim -1.6$ in previous works based on constant extinction correction. We demonstrate that this difference is mainly due to the different extinction corrections. The proper extinction correction is thus key to recovering the intrinsic LF as the extinction globally increases with H$α$ luminosity. Moreover, we find that our H$α$ LF mirrors the SM function of SFGs at the same cosmic epoch. This finding indeed reflects the tight correlation between SFR and SM for the SFGs, i.e., the so-called main sequence.

We present galaxy spectroscopic data on a pencil beam of $10.75' \times7.5'$ centered on the X-ray cluster RXJ0054.0-2823 at $z = 0.29$. We study the spectral evolution of galaxies from $z=1$ down to the cluster redshift in a magnitude-limited sample at $\rm R\leq23$, for which the statistical properties of the sample are well understood. We divide emission-line galaxies in star-forming galaxies, LINERs, and Seyferts by using emission-line ratios of [OII], $\rm Hβ$, and [OIII], and derive stellar fractions from population synthesis models. We focus our analysis on absorption and low-ionization galaxies. For absorption-line galaxies we recover the well known result that these galaxies have had no detectable evolution since $z\sim0.6-0.7$, but we also find that in the range $z=0.65-1$ at least 50% of the stars in bright absorption systems are younger than 2.5Gyr. Faint absorption-line galaxies in the cluster at $z = 0.29$ also had significant star formation during the previous 2-3Gyr, while their brighter counterparts seem to be composed only of old stars. At $z\sim0.8$, our dynamically young cluster had a truncated red-sequence. This result seems to be consistent with a scenario where the final assembly of E/S0 took place at $z<1$. In the volume-limited range $0.35\leq z\leq0.65$ we find that 23% of the early-type galaxies have LINER-like spectra with $\rm Hβ$ in absorption and a significant component of A stars. The vast majority of LINERs in our sample have significant populations of young and intermediate-aged stars and are thus not related to AGN, but to the population of `retired galaxies' recently identified by Cid-Fernandes et al. (2010) in the SDSS. Early-type LINERs with various fractions of A stars, and E+A galaxies appear to play an important role in the formation of the red sequence.

A sample of 36 elliptical galaxies is selected from the Palomar spectroscopic survey. We detect nuclear non-stellar infrared emission in 9 of them. There is unambiguous evidence of circumnuclear dust in these 9 galaxies in their optical images. We also find a remarkable correlation between the infrared excess emission and the nuclear radio/X-ray emission, suggesting that infrared excess emission is tightly related with nuclear activity. Possible origin of infrared excess emission from hot dust heated by the central AGN is supported by spectral indices of IR excess emission.

After wavelength and flux calibration, they are classified by the degree of nuclear activity: nine Seyfert 2 and three Seyfert 3 galaxies. In addition, by using the data from de Grijp et al.(1992), we find that (1) there exists a tight correlation between luminosities of far-infrared ($L_{FIR}$) and \Ha ($L_{Hα}$) for both Seyfert and HII-like (starburst) galaxies; (2) the median value of \Ha luminosities of Seyfert 1s is one magnitude larger than that of Seyfert 2s and starburst galaxies; (3) the cumulative distributions of FIR luminosities and infrared spectral index $α(100,60)$ for Seyfert 1s and 2s are similar to that of starburst galaxies. We conclude that most of the far-infrared emission from Seyfert 2 galaxies is due to the violent nuclear/circumnuclear starburst, rather than the nonthermal activity in the nucleus, this may also be the case for many Seyfert 1s as well.

New test-particle simulations have been performed to study the secular evolution of the gaseous distribution in NGC 4736. We find that the distribution of gas clouds can be understood in the frame of perturbation induced by a nuclear oval potential, in addition to a spiral-like potential. Our experiments show that both inner and outer rings are stable structures located at the inner Lindblad resonance (ILR) and the outer Lindblad resonance(OLR), respectively, in agreement with the observations of NGC 4736.
One of our simplified simulations indicates that both nuclear starburst and orbital resonance might be needed for kee** the inner ring stable for a long period. We have introduced a symplectic algorithm in the orbit integration. Its stronger stability allows us to adopt a rather large time step to save computational time. Substitution of a viscous force for cloud-cloud interactions proves adequate in the case of NGC 4736.
