In this paper, we conduct a thorough investigation of the surface and curvature tensions, $σ$ and $γ$, of three-flavor cold quark matter using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with vector interactions. Our approach ensures both local and global electric charge neutrality, as well as chemical equilibrium under weak interactions. By employing the multiple reflection expansion formalism to account for finite size effects, we explore the impact of specific input parameters, particularly the vector coupling constant ratio $η_V$, the radius $R$ of quark matter droplets, as well as charge-per-baryon ratio $ξ$ of the finite size configurations. We focus on the role of the contributions of each term of the NJL Lagrangian to the surface and curvature tensions in the mean field approximation. We find that the total surface tension exhibits two different density regimes: it remains roughly constant at around $100 \, \mathrm{MeV \, fm^{-2}}$ up to approximately $2-4$ times the nuclear saturation density, and beyond this point, it becomes a steeply increasing function of $n_B$. The total surface and curvature tensions are relatively insensitive to variations in $R$ but are affected by changes in $ξ$ and $η_V$. We observe that the largest contribution to $σ$ and $γ$ comes from the regularized divergent term, making these quantities significantly higher than those obtained within the MIT bag model.

We present a study of hybrid neutron stars with color superconducting quark matter cores at finite temperature that results in sequences of stars with constant entropy per baryon, $s/n_B={\rm const}$. For the quark matter equation of state, we employ a recently developed nonlocal chiral quark model while nuclear matter is described with a relativistic density functional model of the DD2 class. The phase transition is obtained by a Maxwell construction under isothermal conditions. We find that traversing the mixed phase on a trajectory at low $s/n_B\lesssim 2$ in the phase diagram shows a heating effect while at larger $s/n_B$ the temperature drops. This behavior may be attributed to the presence of a color superconducting quark matter phase at low temperatures and the melting of the diquark condensate which restores the normal quark matter phase at higher temperatures. While the isentropic hybrid star branch at low $s/n_B\lesssim 2$ is connected to the neutron star branch, it gets disconnected at higher entropy per baryon so that the "thermal twin" phenomenon is observed. We find that the transition from connected to disconnected hybrid star sequences may be estimated with the Seidov criterion for the difference in energy densities. The radii and masses at the onset of deconfinement exhibit a linear relationship and thus define a critical compactness of the isentropic star configuration for which the transition occurs which for large enough $s/n_B\gtrsim 2$ is accompanied by an instability. The results of this study may be of relevance for uncovering the conditions for the supernova explodability of massive blue supergiant stars by the quark deconfinement mechanism. The accretion-induced deconfinement transition with thermal twin formation may contribute to explaining the origin of eccentric orbits in some binary systems and the origin of isolated millisecond pulsars.

We study cold strange quark stars employing an enhanced version of the quark-mass density-dependent model which incorporates excluded volume effects to address non-perturbative QCD repulsive interactions. We provide a comparative analysis of our mass formula parametrization with previous models from the literature. We identify the regions within the parameter space where three-flavor quark matter is more stable than the most tightly bound atomic nucleus (stability window). Specifically, we show that excluded volume effects do not change the Gibbs free energy per baryon at zero pressure, rendering the stability window unaffected. The curves of pressure versus energy density exhibit various shapes -- convex upward, concave downward, or nearly linear -- depending on the mass parametrization. This behavior results in different patterns of increase, decrease, or constancy in the speed of sound as a function of baryon number density. We analyze the mass-radius relationship of strange quark stars, revealing a significant increase in maximum gravitational mass and a shift in the curves towards larger radii as the excluded volume effect intensifies. Excluded volume effects render our models compatible with all modern astrophysical constraints, including the properties of the recently observed low-mass compact object HESSJ1731.

We study the potential of the axion, $a$, of Quantum Chromodynamics, in the two-flavor color superconducting phase of cold and dense quark matter. We adopt a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-like model. Our interaction contains two terms, one preserving and one breaking the $U(1)_A$ symmetry: the latter is responsible of the coupling of axions to quarks. We introduce two quark condensates, $h_L$ and $h_R$, describing condensation for left-handed and right-handed quarks respectively; we then study the loci of the minima of the thermodynamic potential, $Ω$, in the $(h_L,h_R)$ plane, noticing how the instanton-induced interaction favors condensation in the scalar channel when the $θ-$angle, $θ=a/f_a$, vanishes. Increasing $θ$ we find a phase transition where the scalar condensate rotates into a pseudo-scalar one. We present an analytical result for the topological susceptibility, $χ$, in the superconductive phase, which stands both at zero and at finite temperature. Finally, we compute the axion mass and its self-coupling. In particular, the axion mass $m_a$ is related to the full topological susceptibility via $χ=m_a^2 f_a^2$, hence our result for $χ$ gives an analytical result for $m_a$ in the superconductive phase of high-density Quantum Chromodynamics.

We present a significant extension of the quark mass density-dependent model (QMDDM), initially revised in our prior study (Lugones and Grunfeld, Phys. Rev. D 107, 043025 (2023)), where thermodynamic inconsistencies were addressed. Our current work enriches the QMDDM by incorporating excluded volume effects, as a step towards a more realistic representation of the quark matter equation of state (EOS) at zero temperature. We introduce the concept of ``available volume'' in the Helmholtz free energy formulation, accounting for the space excluded by each quasiparticle due to its finite size or repulsive interactions. We present a methodology to modify the EOS for point-like particles, allowing for a simple and direct incorporation of excluded volume effects. This is first addressed in a simple one-flavor model and then extended to a more realistic three-flavor system, incorporating both mass and volume dependencies on the baryon number density. We examine various ansatzes for the excluded volume, ultimately adopting one that aligns with the asymptotic freedom behavior of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The EOS for electrically neutral systems in chemical equilibrium is computed, focusing on self-bound and hybrid matter scenarios. We show that the incorporation of excluded volume effects renders the EOS stiffer and that excluded volume effects are essential to align the mass-radius relation of self-bound and hybrid stars with modern astrophysical constraints.

We investigate the extension to finite temperatures and neutrino chemical potentials of a recently developed nonlocal chiral quark model approach to the equation of state of neutron star matter. We consider two light quark flavors and current-current interactions in the scalar-pseudoscalar, vector, and diquark pairing channels, where the nonlocality of the currents is taken into account by a Gaussian form factor that depends on the spatial components of the 4-momentum. Within this framework, we analyze order parameters, critical temperatures, phase diagrams, equations of state, and mass-radius relations for different temperatures and neutrino chemical potentials. For parameters of the model that are constrained by recent multi-messenger observations of neutron stars, we find that the mass-radius diagram for isothermal hybrid star sequences exhibits the thermal twin phenomenon for temperatures above 30 MeV.

We study the potential of the Quantum Chromodynamics axion in hot and/or dense quark matter, within a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio-like model that includes the coupling of the axion to quarks. Differently from previous studies, we implement local electrical neutrality and $β-$equilibrium, which are relevant for the description of the quark matter in the core of compact stellar objects. Firstly we compute the effects of the chiral crossover on the axion mass and self-coupling. We find that the low energy properties of axion are very sensitive to the phase transition of Quantum Chromodynamics, in particular, when the bulk quark matter is close to criticality. Then, for the first time in the literature we compute the axion potential at finite quark chemical potential and study the axion domain walls in bulk quark matter. We find that the energy barrier between two adjacent vacuum states decrease in the chirally restored phase: this results in a lower surface tension of the walls. Finally, we comment on the possibility of production of walls in dense quark matter.

We present a systematic investigation of the possible locations for the special point (SP), a unique feature of hybrid neutron stars in the mass-radius diagram. The study is performed within the two-phase approach where the high-density (quark matter) phase is described by the covariant nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (nlNJL) model equation of state (EOS) which is shown to be equivalent to a constant-sound-speed (CSS) EOS. For the nuclear matter phase around saturation density different relativistic density functional EOSs are used: DD2p00, its excluded-volume modification DD2p40 and the hypernuclear EOS DD2Y-T. In the present contribution we apply the Maxwell construction scheme for the deconfinement transition and demonstrate that a simultaneous variation of the vector and diquark coupling constants results in the occurrence of SP "trains" which are invariant against changing the nuclear matter EOS. We propose that the SP train corresponding to a variation of the diquark coupling at constant vector coupling is special since it serves as a lower bound for the line of maximum masses and accessible radii of massive hybrid stars.

We revisit the quark-mass density-dependent model -- a phenomenological equation of state for deconfined quark matter in the high-density low-temperature regime -- and show that thermodynamic inconsistencies that have plagued the model for decades, can be solved if the model is formulated in the canonical ensemble instead of the grand canonical one. Within the new formulation, the minimum of the energy per baryon occurs at zero pressure, and the Euler's relation is verified. Adopting a typical mass-formula, we first analyze in detail a simple model with one particle species. We show that a ``bag'' term that produces quark confinement naturally appears in the pressure (and not in the energy density) due to density dependence of the quark masses. Additionally, the chemical potential gains a new term as in other models with quark repulsive interactions. Then, we extend the formalism to the astrophysically realistic case of charge-neutral three-flavor quark matter in equilibrium under weak interactions, focusing on two different mass formulae: a flavor dependent and a flavor blind one. For these two models, we derive the equation of state and analyze its behavior for several parameter choices. We systematically analyze the parameter space and identify the regions corresponding to self-bound 2-flavor and 3-flavor quark matter, hybrid matter and causal behavior.

The hybrid EOS are obtained by a Maxwell construction of the first-order phase transition between a hadronic phase described by the relativistic density-functional EOS of the "DD2" class with excluded volume effects and a deconfined quark matter phase modeled by an instantaneous nonlocal version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in SU(2)$_f$ with vector interactions and color superconductivity. The form factor in the nonlocal quark matter model is fitted to lattice QCD results in the Coulomb gauge. Owing to strong coupling in the vector meson and diquark channels, a coexistence phase of color superconductivity and chiral symmetry breaking occurs. Our results show an approximately constant behavior for the squared speed of sound with values of 0.4 - 0.6 in the density region relevant for neutron star interiors. To simultaneously fulfill the constraints from the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer radius measurement for PSR J0740+6620 and tidal deformability from GW170817 it is necessary to consider a $μ$-dependent bag pressure that mimics confinement.

With respect to the noninteracting case they are increased by a large factor, which can be as high as $\sim 10$ when the vector coupling constant $g$ varies within the range used in the literature. We provide a systematic study of hybrid neutron star equations of state (EoS) consisting of a relativistic density functional for the hadronic phase and a covariant nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (nlNJL) model to describe the color superconducting quark matter phase. Changing the values of the two free parameters, the dimensionless vector and diquark coupling strengths $η_V$ and $η_D$ results in a set of EoS with varying stiffness and deconfinement onset. The favorable parameters are obtained from a systematic Bayesian analysis for which the multi-messenger constraint on the neutron star radius at $1.4~$M$_\odot$ and the combined mass-radius constraint for PSR J0740+6620 from NICER experiment are used as the constraints. Additionally, the transition from hadronic matter to deconfined quark matter is constrained to occur above nuclear saturation density. Hybrid stars modeled with these favorable parameters are compatible with the NICER results for the radius of the highest known mass neutron star, PSR J0740+6620. Three new observations interesting for neutron star phenomenology are reported: 1) We show that the constant sound speed (CSS) EoS provides an excellent fit to that of the nlNJL model which implies the squared speed of sound at high densities to be about $0.5$ for the optimized parameters; 2) we give a simple functional form for the map** between the parameter spaces of these two models valid for the whole range of relevant chemical potentials and 3) we observe that the special point property of hybrid EoS based on CSS quark matter generalizes to a set of lines consisting of special points when two EoS parameters are varied instead of one. A lower limit for the maximum mass of hybrid stars as a function of the vector coupling strength is obtained.

The nonlocality is incorporated in the model by using a Gaussian form factor. It is found that for low and moderate values of magnetic field there is a decrease of the critical chiral restoration chemical potential $μ_c$, i.e. an inverse magnetic catalysis effect is observed. For larger values of $eB$ the behavior of $μ_c$ becomes more or less flat, depending on the parametrization. Within the considered parametrization range we do not find a significant growth of the critical chemical potential for large magnetic fields, as occurs in the case of the local NJL model.

Fixing the hadronic EoS as the APR one and choosing the color-superconducting, nonlocal NJL model with two free parameters for the quark phase, we perform Bayesian analyses with this two-parameter family of hybrid EoS. Using three different sets of observational constraints that include the mass of PSR J0740+6620, the tidal deformability for GW170817, and the mass-radius relation for PSR J0030+0451 from NICER as obligatory (set 1), while set 2 uses the possible upper limit on the maximum mass from GW170817 as an additional constraint and set 3 instead of the possibility that the lighter object in the asymmetric binary merger GW190814 is a neutron star. We confirm that in any case, the quark matter phase has to be color superconducting with the dimensionless diquark coupling approximately fulfilling the Fierz relation $η_D=0.75$ and the most probable solutions exhibiting a proportionality between $η_D$ and $η_V$, the coupling of the repulsive vector interaction that is required for a sufficiently large maximum mass. We used the Bayesian analysis to investigate with the method of fictitious measurements the consequences of anticipating different radii for the massive $2~M_\odot$ PSR J0740+6220 for the most likely equation of state. With the actual outcome of the NICER radius measurement on PSR J0740+6220 we could conclude that for the most likely hybrid star EoS would not support a maximum mass as large as $2.5~M_\odot$ so that the event GW190814 was a binary black hole merger.

Droplets of absolutely stable strange quark matter (strangelets) immersed in a lepton background may be the energetically preferred composition of strange star crusts and of the interior of a new class of stars known as strangelet dwarfs. In this work we calculate the surface tension $σ$ and the curvature coefficient $γ$ of charged strangelets as a function of the baryon number density, the temperature, the chemical potential of trapped neutrinos, the strangelet size, the electric potential and the electric charge at their boundary. Strange quark matter in chemical equilibrium and with global electric charge neutrality is described within the MIT bag model. We focus on three different astrophysical scenarios, namely cold strange stars, proto strange stars and post merger strange stars. Finite size effects are implemented within the multiple reflection expansion framework. We find that $σ$ decreases significantly as the strangelet's boundary becomes more positively charged. This occurs because $σ$ is dominated by the contribution of $s$ quarks which are the most massive particles in the system. Negatively charged $s$-quarks are suppressed in strangelets with a large positive electric charge, diminishing their contribution to $σ$ and resulting in smaller values of the total $σ$. We verify that the more extreme astrophysical scenarios, with higher temperatures and higher neutrino chemical potentials, allow higher positive values of the strangelet's electric charge at the boundary and consequently smaller values of $σ$. In contrast, $γ$ is strongly dominated by the density of light ($u$ and $d$) quarks and is quite independent of the charge-per-baryon ratio, the temperature and neutrino trap**. We discuss the relative importance of surface and curvature effects as well as some astrophysical consequences of these results.

We reconsider the problem of the hyperon puzzle and its suggested solution by quark deconfinement within the two-phase approach to hybrid compact stars with recently obtained hadronic and quark matter equations of state. For the hadronic phase we employ the hypernuclear equation of state from the lowest order constrained variational method and the quark matter phase is described by a sufficiently stiff equation of state based on a color superconducting nonlocal Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with constant (model nlNJLA) and with density-dependent (model nlNJLB) parameters. We study the model dependence of the phase transition obtained by a Maxwell construction. Our study confirms that also with the present set of equations of state quark deconfinement presents a viable solution of the hyperon puzzle even for the new constraint on the lower limit of the maximum mass from PSR J0740+6620. In this work we provide with model nlNJLB for the first time a hybrid star EoS with an intermediate hypernuclear matter phase between the nuclear and color superconducting quark matter phases, for which the maximum mass of the compact star reaches $2.2~M_\odot$, in accordance with most recent constraints. In model nlNJLA such a phase cannot be realised because the phase transition onset is at low densities, before the hyperon threshold density is passed. We discuss possible consequences of the hybrid equation of state for the deconfinement phase transition in symmetric matter as it will be probed in future heavy-ion collisions at FAIR, NICA and corresponding energy scan programs at the CERN and RHIC facilities.

We study the surface tension of hot, highly magnetized three flavor quark matter droplets, focusing specifically on the thermodynamic conditions prevailing in neutron stars, hot lepton rich protoneutron stars and neutron star mergers. We explore the role of temperature, baryon number density, trapped neutrinos, droplet size and magnetic fields within the multiple reflection expansion formalism (MRE), assuming that astrophysical quark matter can be described as a mixture of free Fermi gases composed by quarks $u$, $d$, $s$, electrons and neutrinos, in chemical equilibrium under weak interactions. We find that the total surface tension is rather unaffected by the size of the drop, but is quite sensitive to the effect of baryon number density, temperature, trapped neutrinos and magnetic fields (specially above $eB \sim 5 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{GeV}^2$). Surface tensions parallel and transverse to the magnetic field span values up to $\sim$ 25 MeV/fm$^2$. For $T \lesssim 100$ MeV the surface tension is a decreasing function of temperature but above 100 MeV it increases monotonically with $T$. Finally, we discuss some astrophysical consequences of our results.

A class of hybrid compact star equations of state is investigated that joins by a Maxwell construction a low-density phase of hadronic matter, modeled by a relativistic meanfield approach with excluded nucleon volume, with a high-density phase of color superconducting two-flavor quark matter, described within a nonlocal covariant chiral quark model. We find the conditions on the vector meson coupling in the quark model under which a stable branch of hybrid compact stars occurs in the cases with and without diquark condensation. We show that these hybrid stars do not form a third family disconnected from the second family of ordinary neutron stars unless additional (de)confining effects are introduced with a density-dependent bag pressure. A suitably chosen density dependence of the vector meson coupling assures that at the same time the $2~$M$_\odot$ maximum mass constraint is fulfilled on the hybrid star branch. A twofold interpolation method is realized which implements both, the density dependence of a confining bag pressure at the onset of the hadron-to-quark matter transition as well as the stiffening of quark matter at higher densities by a density-dependent vector meson coupling. For three parametrizations of this class of hybrid equation of state the properties of corresponding compact star sequences are presented, including mass twins of neutron and hybrid stars at 2.00, 1.39 and 1.20 $M_\odot$, respectively. The sensitivity of the hybrid equation of state and the corresponding compact star sequences to variations of the interpolation parameters at the 10% level is investigated and it is found that the feature of third family solutions for compact stars is robust against such a variation. This advanced description of hybrid star matter allows to interpret GW170817 as a merger not only of two neutron stars but also of a neutron star with a hybrid star or of two hybrid stars.

We review the role of the surface tension of quark matter droplets in astrophysical conditions, focusing specifically on the thermodynamic conditions prevailing in cold neutron stars (NSs), in hot lepton rich proto NSs, and in early universe conditions. We analyze quark matter in chemical equilibrium under weak interactions, which is relevant for understanding the internal composition of hybrid stars, as well as just deconfined quark matter out of chemical equilibrium, which is the relevant thermodynamic state for describing the nucleation process of quark matter in NSs. We study finite volume effects within the Polyakov loop Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model for two light and one heavy quarks at vanishing baryon chemical potential and finite temperatures. We include three different Polyakov loop potentials and ensure that the predictions of our effective model in bulk are compatible with lattice QCD results. Finite size effects are taken into account by means of the Multiple Reflection Expansion formalism. We analyze several thermodynamic quantities including the interaction measure, the speed of sound, the surface tension, and the curvature energy and find that they are sensitive to finite volume effects, specially for systems with radii below $\sim 10$ fm and temperatures around the crossover one. For all sizes, the system undergoes a smooth crossover. The chiral critical temperature decreases by around $5 \%$ and the deconfinement temperature by less than a $2 \%$ when the radius goes from infinity to 3 fm. Thus, as the drop's size decreases, both temperatures become closer. The surface tension is dominated by the contribution of strange quarks and the curvature energy by $u$ and $d$ quarks. At large temperatures both quantities grow proportionally to $T^{3/2}$ but saturate to a constant value at low $T$.

We study the surface tension of highly magnetized three flavor quark matter within the formalism of multiple reflection expansion (MRE). Quark matter is described as a mixture of free Fermi gases composed by quarks $u$, $d$, $s$ and electrons, in chemical equilibrium under weak interactions. Due to the presence of strong magnetic fields the particles' transverse motion is quantized into Landau levels, and the surface tension has a different value in the parallel and transverse directions with respect to the magnetic field.
We calculate the transverse and longitudinal surface tension for different values of the magnetic field and for quark matter drops with different sizes, from a few fm to the bulk limit. For baryon number densities between $2-10$ times the nuclear saturation density, the surface tension falls in the range $2 - 20$ MeV /fm$^{2}$. The largest contribution comes from strange quarks which have a surface tension an order of magnitude larger than the one for $u$ or $d$ quarks and more than two orders of magnitude larger than for electrons. Our results show that the total surface tension is quite insensitive to the size of the drop. We also find that the surface tensions in the transverse and parallel directions are almost unaffected by the magnetic field if $eB$ is below $\sim 5 \times 10^{-3} $ GeV$^2$. Nevertheless, for higher values of $eB$, there is a significant increase in the parallel surface tension and a significant decrease in the transverse one with respect to the unmagnetized case.

We investigate the possible location of the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram based on nonlocal covariant PNJL models including a vector interaction channel. The form factors of the covariant interaction are constrained by lattice QCD data for the quark propagator. The comparison of our results for the pressure including the pion contribution and the scaled pressure shift $ΔP / T^4$ vs $T/T_c$ with lattice QCD results shows a better agreement when Lorentzian formfactors for the nonlocal interactions and the wave function renormalization are considered. The strength of the vector coupling is used as a free parameter which influences results at finite baryochemical potential. It is used to adjust the slope of the pseudocritical temperature of the chiral phase transition at low baryochemical potential and the scaled pressure shift accessible in lattice QCD simulations. Our study, albeit presently performed at the meanfield level, supports the very existence of a critical point and favors its location within a region that is accessible in experiments at the NICA accelerator complex.

We analyse the nucleation of quark matter droplets under protoneutron star conditions. We adopt a two-phase framework in which the hadronic phase is described through a non-linear Walecka model and the just deconfined matter by the MIT bag model including color superconductivity. Surface tension and curvature energy are calculated self-consistently within the MRE formalism. We impose flavour conservation during the transition, which means that the just deconfined quark droplet is transiently out of equilibrium with respect to weak interactions. Our results show that trapped neutrinos slightly increase the critical density for deconfinement and that color superconductivity significantly decreases such density at low temperatures. We also show that the nucleation rate is negligible for droplets larger than 100-200 fm and is huge for smaller droplets provided that the temperature is low enough. We compare our results with previous calculations using the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with color superconductivity and the MIT bag model without color superconductivity. We conclude that the deconfinement transition should be triggered instantaneously when a density slightly larger than the bulk transition density is reached at some layer of a protoneutron star. Since color superconductivity lowers the transition density at low temperatures, the transition is likely to occur after significant cooling in a massive enough protoneutron star.

The hadronic phase is modeled by the non-linear Walecka model at finite temperature including the baryon octet and neutrino trap**. For quark matter we use an $SU(3)_f$ Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model including color superconductivity. The finite size effects on the just deconfined droplets are considered in the frame of the multiple reflection expansion. In addition, we consider that just deconfined quark matter is transitorily out of equilibrium respect to weak interaction, and we impose color neutrality and flavor conservation during the transition. We calculate self-consistently the surface tension and curvature energy density of the quark hadron inter-phase and find that it is larger than the values typically assumed in the literature. The transition density is calculated for drops of different sizes, and at different temperatures and neutrino trap** conditions. Then, we show that energy-density fluctuations are much more relevant for deconfinement than temperature and neutrino density fluctuations. We calculate the critical size spectrum of energy-density fluctuations that allows deconfinement as well as the nucleation rate of each critical bubble. We find that drops with any radii smaller than 800 fm can be formed at a huge rate when matter achieves the bulk transition limit of 5-6 times the nuclear saturation density.

We impose color and flavor conservation during the transition in such a way that just deconfined quark matter is transitorily out of equilibrium with respect to weak interactions. We find that deconfinement is more difficult for small neutrino content and it is easier for lower temperatures although these effects are not too large. In addition they will tend to cancel each other as the protoneutron star cools and deleptonizes, resulting a transition density that is roughly constant along the evolution of the protoneutron star. According to these results the deconfinement transition is favored after substantial cooling and contraction of the protoneutron star.

We study the deconfinement transition of hadronic matter into quark matter under neutron star conditions assuming color and flavor conservation during the transition. We use a two-phase description. For the hadronic phase we use different parameterizations of a non-linear Walecka model which includes the whole baryon octet. For the quark matter phase we use an SU(3)_f Nambu-Jona-Lasinio effective model including color superconductivity. Deconfinement is considered to be a first order phase transition that conserves color and flavor. It gives a short-lived transitory colorless-quark-phase that is not in beta-equilibrium, and decays to a stable configuration in tau ~ tau_{weak} ~ 10^{-8} s. However, in spite of being very short lived, the transition to this intermediate phase determines the onset of the transition inside neutron stars. We find the transition free-energy density for temperatures typical of neutron star interiors. We also find the critical mass above which compact stars should contain a quark core and below which they are safe with respect to a sudden transition to quark matter. Rather independently on the stiffness of the hadronic equation of state (EOS) we find that the critical mass of hadronic stars (without trapped neutrinos) is in the range of ~ 1.5 - 1.8 solar masses. This is in coincidence with previous results obtained within the MIT Bag model.

We present a comparative analysis of chiral quark models which include nonlocal covariant four-fermion couplings. We consider two alternative ways of introducing the nonlocality, as well as various shapes for the momentum-dependent form factors governing the effective interactions. We present a comparative analysis of chiral quark models which include nonlocal covariant four-fermion couplings. We consider two alternative ways of introducing the nonlocality, as well as various shapes for the momentum-dependent form factors governing the effective interactions. In all cases we study the behavior of model parameters and analyze numerical results for constituent quark masses and quark propagator poles. Advantages of these covariant nonlocal schemes over instantaneous nonlocal schemes and the standard NJL model are pointed out.

We consider the phase diagram of two-flavor quark matter under neutron star constraints for two nonlocal, covariant quark models within the mean field approximation. In the first case (Model I) the nonlocality arises from the regularization procedure, motivated by the instanton liquid model, whereas in the second one (Model II) a separable approximation of the one-gluon exchange interaction is applied. We find that Model II predicts a larger quark mass gap and a chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) phase transition line which extends 15-20% further into the phase diagram spanned by temperature (T) and chemical potential (mu). The corresponding critical temperature at mu=0, T_c(0)~140 MeV, is in better accordance to recent lattice QCD results than the prediction of the standard local NJL model, which exceeds 200 MeV. For both Model I and Model II we have considered various coupling strengths in the scalar diquark channel, showing that different low-temperature quark matter phases can occur at intermediate densities: a normal quark matter (NQM) phase, a two-flavor superconducting (2SC) quark matter phase and a mixed 2SC-NQM phase. Although in most cases there is also a gapless 2SC phase, this occurs in general in a small region at nonzero temperatures, thus its effect should be negligible for compact star applications.

Abstract:
We construct a new color neutral ground state of two-flavor color superconducting quark matter. It is shown that, in contrast with the conventionally considered ground state with diquark pairing in only one color direction, this new state is stable against arbitrary diquark fluctuations. In addition, the thermodynamical potential is found to be lower for this new state than for the conventional…

We study the competence between chiral symmetry restoration and two flavor color superconductivity (2SC) using a relativistic quark model with covariant nonlocal interactions. We consider two different nonlocal regulators: a Gaussian regulator and a Lorentzian regulator. We find that although the phase diagrams are qualitative similar to those obtained using models with local interactions, in our case the superconducting gaps at medium values of the chemical potential are larger. Consequently, we obtain that in that region the critical temperatures for the disappearance of the 2SC phase might be of the order of 100-120 MeV. We also find that for ratios of the quark-quark and quark-antiquark couplings somewhat above the standard value 3/4, the end point and triple point in the $T-μ$ phase diagram meet and a phase where both the chiral and diquark condensates are non-negligible appears.

Abstract:
In this work we study the departure for the ideal $φ-ω$ mixing angle in the frame of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We have shown that in that context, the flavour symmetry breaking is unable to produce the shifting in the mixing angle. We introduce a nonet symmetry breaking in the neutral vector sector to regulate the non-strange content of the $φ$ meson. The phenomenon is well reproduced by our…

Abstract:
We revisit the theoretical predictions for anomalous radiative decays of pseudoscalar and vector mesons. Our analysis is performed in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, introducing adequate parameters to account for the breakdown of chiral symmetry. The results are comparable with those obtained in previous approaches.

Abstract:
A simple Lorentzian vacuum wormhole solution of Brans-Dicke gravitation is presented and analysed. It is shown that such solution holds for both, the Brans-Dicke theory endowed with torsion (for a value of the coupling parameter $ω> 1/2$) and for the vacuum -no torsion- case (for $ω< -2$).

Quarkonium spectra with a Klein-Gordon Oscillator as a confining potential
Authors:
A. G. Grunfeld,

Abstract:
A quantum relativistic model is proposed to represent the confining potential of $c \bar{c}$ and $b \bar{b}$ mesons by using the Klein Gordon oscillator. We have solved the two-body problem obtaining the eigenvalues and the corresponding mass spectra, which fit very well with experimental data. We compare the results of our model with others obtained from different quark binding potentials.
