Abstract:
Reproducible High Tc Josephson junctions have been made in a rather simple two-step process using ion irradiation. A microbridge 1 to 5 micrometers wide is firstly designed by ion irradiating a c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7 film through a gold mask such as the unprotected part becomes insulating. A lower Tc part is then defined within the bridge by irradiating with a much lower dose through a 20 nm…

A lower Tc part is then defined within the bridge by irradiating with a much lower dose through a 20 nm wide narrow slit opened in a standard electronic photoresist. These planar junctions, whose settings can be finely tuned, exhibit reproducible and nearly ideal Josephson characteristics. Non hysteretic Resistively Shunted Junction (RSJ) like behavior is observed, together with sinc Fraunhofer patterns for rectangular junctions. The IcRn product varies with temperature ; it can reach a few mV. The typical resistance ranges from 0.1 to a few ohms, and the critical current density can be as high as 30 kA/cm2. The dispersion in characteristics is very low, in the 5% to 10% range. Such nanojunctions have been used to make microSQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) operating at Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) temperature. They exhibit a very small asymmetry, a good sensitivity and a rather low noise. The process is easily scalable to make rather complex Josephson circuits.

Planar tunneling spectroscopy reveals damped oscillations of the superconducting order parameter induced into a ferromagnetic thin film by the proximity effect. Planar tunneling spectroscopy reveals damped oscillations of the superconducting order parameter induced into a ferromagnetic thin film by the proximity effect. The oscillations are due to the finite momentum transfer provided to Cooper pairs by the splitting of the spin up and down bands in the ferromagnet. As a consequence, for negative values of the superconducting order parameter the tunneling spectra are capsized ("$π$-state"). The oscillations' dam** and period are set by the same length scale, which depends on the spin polarization.

Abstract:
We have made in-situ [103] and [110]YBCO/Pb junctions, which display an hysteretic behaviour with both a well-defined Quasi-Particule branch and a Josephson current. A zero energy conductance peak is observed in the tunneling conductance which is a signature of Andreev Bound States (ABS) at a surface of a d-wave superconductor. A zero energy conductance peak is observed in the tunneling conductance which is a signature of Andreev Bound States (ABS) at a surface of a d-wave superconductor. The observed splitting of this peak at low temperature may confirm the existence of a surface state which breaks time-reversal symmetry. However, up to now, we have not seen any evidence of a coupling between Josephson current and the zero-energy ABS, predicted by Y. Tanaka and S. Kashiwaya (PRB 56 p.892).

We report on transport measurements on Nb/Al/Gd/Al/Nb junctions.Bulk Gadolinium is a weakly polarized ferromagnet (5-7%), and is present in the junction in granular form (superparamagnet). We show that Andreev reflection is strongly enhanced by a weak polarization, obtained by applying an external magnetic field. A new model is proposed that accounts for this effect. The transport is described in terms of ``hot'' carriers that experience Zeeman splitting due to the spin polarized background. The Landauer formula is $G=(4e^2)/h A(h_b)$, $h_b$ being the exchange field at the grain boundary, and A(E) the Andreev current coefficient, that increases with E for resistive junctions.
