Stellar feedback plays a crucial role in star formation and the life cycle of molecular clouds. The intense star formation region 30 Doradus, which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), is a unique target for detailed investigation of stellar feedback owing to the proximity of the hosting galaxy and modern observational capabilities that together allow us to resolve individual molecular clouds $-$ nurseries of star formation. We study the impact of large-scale feedback on the molecular gas using the new observational data in the $^{12}$CO(3$-$2) line obtained with the APEX telescope. Our data cover an unprecedented area of 13.8 sq. deg. of the LMC disc with a spatial resolution of 5 pc and provide an unbiased view of the molecular clouds in the galaxy. Using this data, we located molecular clouds in the disc of the galaxy, estimated their properties, such as the areal number density, relative velocity and separation, width of the line profile, CO line luminosity, size, and virial mass, and compared these properties of the clouds of 30 Doradus with those in the rest of the LMC disc. We find that, compared with the rest of the observed molecular clouds in the LMC disc, those in 30 Doradus show the highest areal number density; they are spatially more clustered, they move faster with respect to each other, and they feature larger linewidths. In parallel, we do not find statistically significant differences in such properties as the CO line luminosity, size, and virial mass between the clouds of 30 Doradus and the rest of the observed field. We interpret our results as signatures of gas dispersal and fragmentation due to high-energy large-scale feedback.

Understanding spin-lattice interactions in antiferromagnets is one of the most fundamental issues at the core of the recently emerging and booming fields of antiferromagnetic spintronics and magnonics. Recently, coherent nonlinear spin-lattice coupling was discovered in an antiferromagnet which opened the possibility to control the nonlinear coupling strength and thus showing a novel pathway to coherently control magnon-phonon dynamics. Here, utilizing intense narrow band terahertz (THz) pulses and tunable magnetic fields up to 7 T, we experimentally realize the conditions of the Fermi magnon-phonon resonance in antiferromagnetic $CoF_{2}$. These conditions imply that both the spin and the lattice anharmonicities harvest energy transfer between the subsystems, if the magnon eigenfrequency $f_{m}$ is twice lower than the frequency of the phonon $2f_{m}=f_{ph}$. Performing THz pump-infrared probe spectroscopy in conjunction with simulations, we explore the coupled magnon-phonon dynamics in the vicinity of the Fermi-resonance and reveal the corresponding fingerprints of an impulsive THz-induced response. This study focuses on the role of nonlinearity in spin-lattice interactions, providing insights into the control of coherent magnon-phonon energy exchange.

It is found that single-cycle THz electromagnetic fields efficiently excite a GHz spin resonance mode in ferrimagnetic Tm$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, despite the near absence of GHz spectral components in the exciting THz pulse. By analyzing how the efficiency of excitation depends on the orientation and strength of the THz electric field, we show that it can be explained in terms of the nonlinear THz inverse Cotton-Mouton effect. Here, the THz electric field gets effectively rectified and acts on the ferrimagnetic spins as a uni-polar effective magnetic field pulse. This interpretation is confirmed by a theoretical model based on the phenomenological analysis of the effective magnetic field, combined with the equations of motion derived from the effective Lagrangian for a ferrimagnet. Moreover, by using the outcome of two-dimensional THz spectroscopy, we conjecture a quantum-mechanical interpretation of the observed effect in terms of stimulated Raman scattering of THz photons by the crystal-field split f-f electronic transitions of Tm$^{3+}$.

Still, it is challenged by the absence of net magnetization in the ground state. Here, we show that the magnetization emerging from a state of coherent spin precession in antiferromagnetic iron borate FeBO$_3$ can be used to enable the nonlinear coupling of light to another, otherwise weakly susceptible, mode of spin precession. This nonlinear mechanism can facilitate conceptually new ways of controlling antiferromagnetism.

Two-dimensional (2D) THz spectroscopy combined with modeling based on the classical equations of motion and symmetry analysis reveals the multi-stage process underlying the excitation of the Raman-active $E_g$ phonon. In this process, the THz electric field first prepares a coherent IR-active $E_u$ phononic state and subsequently interacts with this state to efficiently excite the $E_g$ phonon.

Understanding spin-lattice coupling represents a key challenge in modern condensed matter physics, with crucial importance and implications for ultrafast and 2D-magnetism. The efficiency of angular momentum and energy transfer between spins and the lattice imposes fundamental speed limits on the ability to control spins in spintronics, magnonics and magnetic data storage. We report on an efficient nonlinear mechanism of spin-lattice coupling driven by THz light pulses. A nearly single-cycle THz pulse resonantly interacts with a coherent magnonic state in the antiferromagnet CoF2 and excites the Raman-active THz phonon. The results reveal the unique functionality of antiferromagnets allowing ultrafast spin-lattice coupling using light.

The efficiency of ultrafast excitation of spins in antiferromagnetic $\mathrm{α-Fe_{2}O_{3}}$ using nearly single-cycle THz pulse is studied as a function of the polarization of the THz pulse and the sample temperature. Above the Morin point the most efficient excitation is achieved when the magnetic field of the THz pulse is perpendicular to the antiferromagnetically coupled spins. Using the experimental results and equations of motion for spins, we show that the mechanism of the spin excitation above and below the Morin point relies on magnetic-dipole interaction of the THz magnetic field with spins and the efficiency of the coupling is proportional to the time derivative of the magnetic field.

Different spiral generation mechanisms are expected to produce different morphological and kinematic features. In this first paper in a series we carefully study the parameters of spiral structure in 155 face-on spiral galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, in the three $gri$ bands. We use a method for deriving a set of parameters of spiral structure, such as the width of the spiral arms, their fraction to the total galaxy luminosity and their colour, which have not been properly studied before. Our method is based on an analysis of a set of photometric cuts perpendicular to the direction of a spiral arm. Based on the results of our study, we compare the main three classes of spirals: grand design, multi-armed and flocculent. We conclude that: i) for the vast majority of galaxies (86\%) we observe an increase of their arm width with galactocentric distance; ii) more luminous spirals in grand design galaxies exhibit smaller variations of the pitch angle with radius than less luminous grand design spirals; iii) grand design galaxies show less difference between the pitch angles of individual arms than multi-armed galaxies. Apart from these distinctive features, all three spiral classes do not differ significantly by their pitch angle, arm width, width asymmetry, and environment. Wavelength dependence is found only for the arm fraction. Therefore, observationally we find no strong difference (except for the view and number of arms) between grand design, multi-armed and flocculent spirals in the sample galaxies.

Recently van Dokkum et al. (2018b) reported that the galaxy NGC 1052-DF2 (DF2) lacks dark matter if located at $20$ Mpc from Earth. In contrast, DF2 is a dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy with a normal globular cluster population if it has a much shorter distance near $10$ Mpc. However, DF2 then has a high peculiar velocity wrt. the cosmic microwave background of $886$ $\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$, which differs from that of the Local Group (LG) velocity vector by $1298$ $\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$ with an angle of $117 \, ^{\circ}$. Taking into account the dynamical $M/L$ ratio, the stellar mass, half-light radius, peculiar velocity, motion relative to the LG, and the luminosities of the globular clusters, we show that the probability of finding DF2-like galaxies in the lambda cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) TNG100-1 simulation is at most $1.0\times10^{-4}$ at $11.5$ Mpc and is $4.8\times10^{-7}$ at $20.0$ Mpc. At $11.5$ Mpc, the peculiar velocity is in significant tension with the TNG100-1, TNG300-1, and Millennium simulations, but occurs naturally in a Milgromian cosmology. At $20.0$ Mpc, the unusual globular cluster population would challenge any cosmological model. Estimating that precise measurements of the internal velocity dispersion, stellar mass, and distance exist for $100$ galaxies, DF2 is in $2.6σ$ ($11.5$ Mpc) and $4.1σ$ ($20.0$ Mpc) tension with standard cosmology. Adopting the former distance for DF2 and assuming that NGC 1052-DF4 is at $20.0$ Mpc, the existence of both is in tension at $\geq4.8σ$ with the $Λ$CDM model. If both galaxies are at $20.0$ Mpc the $Λ$CDM cosmology has to be rejected by $\geq5.8σ$.

The ultrashort laser excitation of Co/Pt magnetic heterostructures can effectively generate spin and charge currents at the interfaces between magnetic and nonmagnetic layers. The direction of these photocurrents can be controlled by the helicity of the circularly polarized laser light and an external magnetic field. Here, we employ THz time-domain spectroscopy to investigate further the role of interfaces in these photo-galvanic phenomena. In particular, the effects of either Cu or ZnO interlayers on the photocurrents in Co/X/Pt (X = Cu, ZnO) have been studied by varying the thickness of the interlayers up to 5 nm. The results are discussed in terms of spin-diffusion phenomena and interfacial spin-orbit torque.
