Recent experiments have pointed to the formation of a new state of matter, the electron quadrupling condensate in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ . The state spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry and is sandwiched between two critical points, separating it from the superconducting and normal metal states. The adjacent two critical points make acoustic effects a promising tool to study such states because of their sensitivity to symmetry-breaking transitions. We report a theory of the acoustic effects of systems with an electron quadrupling phase and new ultrasound velocity measurements of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. The presented theory for the electron quadrupling state gives the same type of singularities that are observed in experiment.

The present studies show that long-range magnetic order takes place in RuBr$_3$ at $\approx$ 34 K. The observations of clear oscillations in the muon time spectra demonstrate the presence of well-defined internal fields at the muon sites. The magnetic ordering appears to be very robust and static suggesting a more conventional nature of magnetic ordering in the RuBr$_3$ system at zero field. Present investigations prove that in RuBr$_3$ the Kitaev interactions are likely to be weakened at zero field in comparison to the $α$-RuCl$_3$ system. This proves that it is possible to tune the Kitaev interactions by replacing Cl with heavier halogen elements such as Br.

We report on a novel material obtained by modifying pristine YBCO superconductor in solid phase synthesis via simultaneous partial substitution of Ba by Sr and O by Se. Simultaneous application of EDX and EBSD confirmed that Se atoms indeed enter the crystalline lattice cell. The detailed XRD analysis further confirmed this conclusion and revealed that the obtained polycrystalline material contains 5 phases, with the major phase ($>$30\%) being a cuprate YBa$_{1.4}$Sr$_{0.6}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6}$Se$% _{0.51}$. The obtained superconductor demonstrates unique properties, including i) two superconducting transitions with $T_{c1}\approx$ 35 K (granular surface phase) and $T_{c2}\approx$ 13 K (bulk granular phase) - this granular phase arrangement naturally yields the Wohlleben effect; ii) reentrant diamagnetism and resistive state; iii) strong paramagnetism with Curie-Weiss behavior (% $θ_{CW} \approx$ 4 K) and the ferromagnetic phase overruled by superconductivity; iv) Schottky anomaly visible in the heat capacity data and most likely delivered by small clusters of magnetic moments. Thorough analysis of the heat capacity data reveals a strong-coupling $d-$wave pairing in its bulk phase (with $2Δ/T_{c}\approx 5$), and, most importantly, a very unusual anomaly in this cuprate. There are reasons to associate this anomaly with the quantum criticality observed in traditional cuprate superconductors at much higher fields (achievable only in certain laboratories). In our case, the fields leading to quantum criticality are much weaker ($\sim $7-9 T) thus opening avenues for exploration of the interplay between superconductivity and pair density waves by the wider research community.

We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth ($λ_{\rm ab}$) in single crystals of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ down to $\simeq 0.015$ K by means of muon-spin rotation/relaxation. The linear temperature dependence of $λ^{-2}_{\rm ab}$ for $T\lesssim 0.7$ K suggests the presence of nodes in the superconducting gap. This statement is further substantiated by observation of the Volovik effect, $i.e.$ the reduction of $λ_{ab}^{-2}$ as a function of the applied magnetic field. The experimental zero-field and zero-temperature value of $λ_{\rm ab}=124(3)$ nm agrees with $λ_{\rm ab}\simeq 130$ nm, calculated based on results of electronic structure measurements reported in [Phys. Rev X 9, 021048 (2019)]. Our analysis reveals that a simple nodal superconducting energy gap, described by the lowest possible harmonic of a gap function, does not capture the dependence of $λ_{\rm ab}^{-2}$ on $T$, so the higher angular harmonics of the energy gap function need to be introduced.

The ability to efficiently control charge and spin in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is crucial for fundamental research and underpins technological development. Here, we explore the tunability of magnetism, superconductivity and crystal structure in the stripe phase of the cuprate La_2-xBa_xCuO_4, with x = 0.115 and 0.135, by employing temperature-dependent (down to 400 mK) muon-spin rotation and AC susceptibility, as well as X-ray scattering experiments under compressive uniaxial stress in the CuO_2 plane. A sixfold increase of the 3-dimensional (3D) superconducting critical temperature T_c and a full recovery of the 3D phase coherence is observed in both samples with the application of extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa. This finding demonstrates the removal of the well-known 1/8-anomaly of cuprates by uniaxial stress. On the other hand, the spin-stripe order temperature as well as the magnetic fraction at 400 mK show only a modest decrease under stress. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. However, a substantial decrease of the magnetic volume fraction and a full suppression of the low-temperature tetragonal structure is found at elevated temperatures, which is a necessary condition for the development of the 3D superconducting phase with optimal T_c. Our results evidence a remarkable cooperation between the long-range static spin-stripe order and the underlying crystalline order with the three-dimensional fully coherent superconductivity. Overall, these results suggest that the stripe- and the SC order may have a common physical mechanism.

The magnetic response is a state-defining property of superconductors. The magnetic flux penetrates type-II bulk superconductors by forming quantum vortices when the enclosed magnetic flux is equal to the magnetic flux quantum. The flux quantum is the universal quantity that depends only on the ratio of fundamental constants: the electron charge and the Planck constant. This work investigates the vortex state in the hole-overdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ by using scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. We observed quantum vortices that carry only a fraction of the flux quantum, which vary continuously with temperature. This finding establishes the phenomenon that superconductors support quantum vortices with non-universally quantized magnetic flux. Furthermore, the demonstrations of the mobility of the fractional vortices and the manipulability of their positions open up a route for future fluxonics applications.

Muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) and polar Kerr effect measurements provide evidence for a time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. However, the absence of a cusp in the superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) vs. stress and the absence of a resolvable specific heat anomaly at TRSB transition temperature ($T_{\rm TRSB}$) under uniaxial stress challenge a hypothesis of TRSB superconductivity. Recent $μ$SR studies under pressure and with disorder indicate that the splitting between $T_{\rm c}$ and $T_{\rm TRSB}$ occurs only when the structural tetragonal symmetry is broken. To further test such behavior, we measured $T_\text{c}$ through susceptibility measurements, and $T_\text{TRSB}$ through $μ$SR, under uniaxial stress applied along a $\langle 110 \rangle$ lattice direction. We have obtained preliminary evidence for suppression of $T_\text{TRSB}$ below $T_\text{c}$, at a rate much higher than the suppression rate of $T_\text{c}$.

Theoretically, materials that break multiple symmetries allow, under certain conditions, the formation of four-fermion condensates above the superconducting critical temperature. Such states can be stabilized by phase fluctuations. Recently a fermionic quadrupling condensate that breaks the $Z_2$ time-reversal symmetry was reported in Ba$_{\rm 1-x}$K$_{\rm x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ [V. Grinenko et al., Nat. Phys. 17, 1254 (2021)]. Evidence for the new state of matter comes from muon-spin rotation, transport, thermoelectric, and ultrasound experiments. Observing a specific heat anomaly is a very important signature of a transition to a new state of matter. However, a fluctuation-induced specific heat singularity is usually very challenging to resolve from a background of other contributions. Here, we report on detecting two anomalies in the specific heat of Ba$_{\rm 1-x}$K$_{\rm x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at zero magnetic field. The anomaly at the higher temperature is accompanied by the appearance of a spontaneous Nernst effect, indicating broken time-reversal ($Z_2$) symmetry. The second anomaly at the lower temperature coincides with the transition to a zero resistance state, indicating superconductivity breaking the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. Our data provide calorimetric evidence for the $Z_2$ phase formation above the superconducting phase transition.

Nematicity in the heavily hole-doped iron pnictide superconductors remains controversial. Sizeable nematic fluctuations and even nematic orders far from a magnetic instability were declared in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and its sister compounds. Here we report a systematic elastoresistance study of series of isovalent- and electron-doped KFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals. We found divergent elastoresistance upon cooling for all the crystals along their [110] direction. The amplitude of elastoresistivity diverges if K is substituted with larger ions or if the system is driven towards a Lifshitz transition. However, we conclude none of them necessarily indicates an independent nematic critical point. Instead, the increased nematicity can be associated with another electronic criticality. In particular, we propose a mechanism how elastoresistivity is enhanced at a Lifshitz transition.

Discoveries of ordered quantum states of matter are of great fundamental interest, and often lead to unique applications. The most well known example -- superconductivity -- is caused by the formation and condensation of pairs of electrons. A key property of superconductors is diamagnetism: magnetic fields are screened by dissipationless currents. Fundamentally, what distinguishes superconducting states from normal states is a spontaneously broken symmetry corresponding to long-range coherence of fermion pairs. Here we report a set of experimental observations in hole doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ which are not consistent with conventional superconducting behavior. Our specific-heat measurements indicate the formation of fermionic bound states when the temperature is lowered from the normal state. However, for $x \sim 0.8$, instead of the standard for superconductors, zero resistance and diamagnetic screening, for a range of temperatures, we observe the opposite effect: the generation of self-induced magnetic fields measured by spontaneous Nernst effect and muon spin rotation experiments. The finite resistance and the lack of any detectable diamagnetic screening in this state exclude the spontaneously broken symmetry associated with superconducting two-fermion correlations. Instead, combined evidence from transport and thermodynamic measurements indicates that the formation of fermionic bound states leads to spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry above the superconducting transition temperature. These results demonstrate the existence of a broken-time-reversal-symmetry bosonic metal state. In the framework of a multiband theory, such a state is characterized by quartic correlations: the long-range order exists only for {\it pairs} of fermion pairs.

There is considerable evidence that the superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ breaks time reversal symmetry. In the experiments showing time reversal symmetry breaking its onset temperature, $T_\text{TRSB}$, is generally found to match the critical temperature, $T_\text{c}$, within resolution. In combination with evidence for even parity, this result has led to consideration of a $d_{xz} \pm id_{yz}$ order parameter. The degeneracy of the two components of this order parameter is protected by symmetry, yielding $T_\text{TRSB} = T_\text{c}$, but it has a hard-to-explain horizontal line node at $k_z=0$. Therefore, $s \pm id$ and $d \pm ig$ order parameters are also under consideration. These avoid the horizontal line node, but require tuning to obtain $T_\text{TRSB} \approx T_\text{c}$. To obtain evidence distinguishing these two possible scenarios (of symmetry-protected versus accidental degeneracy), we employ zero-field muon spin rotation/relaxation to study pure Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under hydrostatic pressure, and Sr$_{1.98}$La$_{0.02}$RuO$_4$ at zero pressure. Both hydrostatic pressure and La substitution alter $T_\text{c}$ without lifting the tetragonal lattice symmetry, so if the degeneracy is symmetry-protected $T_\text{TRSB}$ should track changes in $T_\text{c}$, while if it is accidental, these transition temperatures should generally separate. We observe $T_\text{TRSB}$ to track $T_\text{c}$, supporting the hypothesis of $d_{xz} \pm id_{yz}$ order.

We present a piezoelectric-driven uniaxial pressure cell that is optimized for muon spin relaxation and neutron scattering experiments, and that is operable over a wide temperature range including cryogenic temperatures. To accommodate the large samples required for these measurement techniques, the cell is designed to generate forces up to 1000 N, and to minimize the background signal the space around the sample is kept as open as possible. We demonstrate here that by mounting plate-like samples with epoxy, a uniaxial stress exceeding 1 GPa can be achieved in an active volume of 5 mm3. We show that for practical operation it is important to monitor both the force and displacement applied to the sample. Also, because time is critical during facility experiments, samples are mounted in detachable holders that can be rapidly exchanged. The piezoelectric actuators are likewise contained in an exchangeable cartridge.

We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. These results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models.

Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $μ$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$.

We present an extensive study of the structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of high-quality monocrystals of the two heterometallic oxyborates from the ludwigite family: Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ in the temperature range above 2 K. The distinctive feature of the investigated structures is the selective distribution of Cu and Ga/Al cations. The unit cell of Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ contains four nonequivalent crystallographic sites of metal ions. Two sites in the structure from four nonequivalent crystallographic sites of metal ions of Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ are fully occupied by Cu atoms which form the quasi one-dimensional chains along the a-axis. For Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ all sites are partially occupied by Al and Cu atoms. The joint analysis of low-temperature data on magnetic susceptibility and magnetic contribution to the specific heat showed that Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ exhibit an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_{\rm N} \approx 3$ and 4 K, respectively. The magnetic contributions to the specific heat for both compounds were obtained after subtracting the phonon contribution. It is shown that the external magnetic field above 2.5 T leads to a broadening of the magnetic phase transition indicating suppression of the long-range antiferromagnetic order.

Among unconventional superconductors, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has become a benchmark for experimentation and theoretical analysis because its normal-state electronic structure is known with exceptional precision, and because of experimental evidence that its superconductivity has, very unusually, a spontaneous angular momentum, i.e. a chiral state. This hypothesis of chirality is however difficult to reconcile with recent evidence on the spin part of the order parameter. Measurements under uniaxial stress offer an ideal way to test for chirality, because under uniaxial stress the superconducting and chiral transitions are predicted to split, allowing the empirical signatures of each to be identified separately. Here, we report zerofield muon spin relaxation (ZF-$μ$SR) measurements on crystals placed under uniaxial stresses of up to 1.05 GPa. We report a clear stress-induced splitting between the onset temperatures of superconductivity and time-reversal symmetry breaking, consistent with qualitative expectations for chiral superconductivity. We also report the appearance of unexpected bulk magnetic order under a uniaxial stress of ~ 1.0 GPa in clean Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Rare-earth delafossites were recently proposed as promising candidates for the realization of an effective $S$=1/2 quantum spin liquid (QSL) on the triangular lattice. In contrast to the most actively studied triangular-lattice antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$, which is known for considerable structural disorder due to site intermixing, NaYbS$_2$ delafossite realizes structurally ideal triangular layers. We present detailed $μ$SR studies on this regular (undistorted) triangular Yb sublattice based system with effective spin $J_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2$ in the temperature range 0.05 - 40 K. Zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) $μ$SR studies confirm the absence of any long range magnetic order state down to 0.05K ($\sim J$/80). Current $μ$SR results together with the so far available bulk characterization data suggest that NaYbS$_2$ is an ideal candidate to identify QSL ground state.

We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements under pressure on Fe$_{1+δ}$Se$_\mathrm{1\text{-}x}$S$_\mathrm{x}$ with x $\approx 0.11$.Above $p\approx0.6$ GPa we find microscopic coexistence of superconductivity with an extended dome of long range magnetic order that spans a pressure range between previously reported separated magnetic phases. The magnetism initially competes on an atomic scale with the coexisting superconductivity leading to a local maximum and minimum of the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}(p)$. The maximum of $T_\mathrm{c}$ corresponds to the onset of magnetism while the minimum coincides with the pressure of strongest competition. A shift of the maximum of $T_\mathrm{c}(p)$ for a series of single crystals with x up to 0.14 roughly extrapolates to a putative magnetic and superconducting state at ambient pressure for x $\geq0.2$.

The interplay between the nematic order and magnetism in FeSe is not yet well understood. There is a controversy concerning the relationship between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in FeSe and their relevance for superconductivity. Here we investigate the effect of S substitution on the nematic transition temperature ($T_{\rm n}$) and the low-energy spin fluctuations (SF) in FeSe single crystals. We show that the low-energy SF emerge below the nematic transition. The difference between the onset temperature for the critical SF ($T_{\rm SF}$) and $T_{\rm n}$ is small for FeSe but significantly increases with S substitution. Below $T_{\rm SF}$ the Korringa relation is violated and the effective muon hyperfine coupling constant changes a sign. Our results exclude a direct coupling of the low-energy SF to the electronic nematic order indicating a presence of multiple spin degrees of freedom in FeSe$_{\rm 1-x}$S$_{\rm x}$.

We show that -dHc2/dT scales linearly with Tc, indicating that FeSe0.7Te0.3 follows the same universal behavior as observed for pnictide FBS. The observed behavior is consistent with a multiband superconductivity paired by interband interaction such as sign change s+- superconductivity.

In general, magnetism and superconductivity are antagonistic to each other. However, there are several families of superconductors, in which superconductivity may coexist with magnetism, and only a few examples are known, when superconductivity itself induces spontaneous magnetism. The most known compounds are Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and some noncentrosymmetric superconductors. Here, we report the finding of a narrow dome of a novel $s+is'$ superconducting (SC) phase with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) inside the broad $s$-wave SC region of the centrosymmetric multiband superconductor Ba$_{\rm 1-x}$K$_{\rm x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.7 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.85$). We observe spontaneous magnetic fields inside this dome using the muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) technique. Furthermore, our detailed specific heat study reveals that the BTRS dome appears very close to a change in the topology of the Fermi surface (Lifshitz transition). With this, we experimentally demonstrate the emergence of a novel quantum state due to topological changes of the electronic system.

The interplay of high and low-energy mass renormalizations with band-shifts reflected by the positions of van Hove singularities (VHS) in the normal state spectra of the highest hole-overdoped and strongly correlated AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A122) with A = K, Cs is discussed phenomenologically based on ARPES data and GGA band-structure calculations with full spin-orbit coupling. The big increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ from K122 to Cs122 is ascribed to an enhanced coupling to low-energy bosons in the vicinity of a quantum critical point to an unknown, yet incommensurate phase different from the commensurate Mott one. We find no sizeable increase in correlations for Cs122 in contrast to F. Eilers et al., PRL v. 116, 237003 (2016) [3]. The empirical (ARPES) VHS positions as compared with GGA-predictions point even to slightly weaker correlations in Cs122 in accord with low-$T$ magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ data and a decreasing Wilson ratio $\propto χ(0)/γ$.

Magnetic frustration and disorder are key ingredients to prevent the onset of magnetic order. In the disordered hexagonal double perovskite BaTi$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$, Mn$^{4+}$ cations, with $S=3/2$ spins, can either form highly correlated states of magnetic trimers or dimers or remain as weakly interacting orphan spins. At low temperature ($T$), the dimer response is negligible, and magnetism is dominated by the trimers and orphans. To explore the role of magnetic frustration, disorder and possibly of quantum fluctuations, the low-$T$ magnetic properties of the remaining magnetic degrees of freedom of BaTi$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$ are investigated. Heat-capacity data and magnetic susceptibility display no evidence for a phase transition to a magnetically ordered phase but indicate the formation of a correlated spin state. The low-temperature spin dynamics of this state is then explored by $μ$SR experiments. The zero field $μ^{+}$ relaxation rate data show no static magnetism down to $T=19$ mK and longitudinal field experiments support as well that dynamic magnetism persists at low $T$. Our results are interpreted in terms of a spin glass state which stems from a disordered lattice of orphans spins and trimers. A spin liquid state in BaTi$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$, however, is not excluded and is also discussed.

A nematic transition preceding a long-range spin density wave antiferromagnetic phase is a common feature of many Fe based superconductors. However, in the FeSe system with a nematic transition at $T_{\rm s} \approx$ 90 K no evidence for long-range static magnetism down to very low temperature was found. The lack of magnetism is a challenge for the theoretical description of FeSe. Here, we investigated high-quality single crystals of FeSe using high-field (up to 9.5 Tesla) muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. The $μ$SR Knight shift and the bulk susceptibility linearly scale at high temperatures but deviate from this behavior around $T^{*} \sim 10$ K, where the Knight shift exhibits a kink. This behavior hints to an essential change of the electronic and/or magnetic properties crossing the region near $T^{*}$. In the temperature range $T_{\rm s} \gtrsim T \gtrsim T^{*}$ the muon spin depolarization rate follows a critical behavior $Λ\propto T^{-0.4}$. The observed non-Fermi liquid behavior with a cutoff at $T^{*}$ indicates that FeSe is in the vicinity to a antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. Our analysis is suggestive for $T^{*}$ triggered by the Lifshitz transition.

The compound Sr$_{0.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$FBiS$_{2}$ belongs to the intensively studied family of layered BiS$_2$ superconductors. It attracts special attention because superconductivity at $T_{sc} = 2.8$ K was found to coexist with local-moment ferromagnetic order with a Curie temperature $T_C = 7.5$ K. Recently it was reported that upon replacing S by Se $T_C$ drops and ferromagnetism becomes of an itinerant nature (Thakur et al., Sci. Reports 6, 37527 (2016)). At the same time $T_{sc}$ increases and it was argued superconductivity coexists with itinerant ferromagnetism. Here we report a muon spin rotation and relaxation study ($μ$SR) conducted to investigate the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetic order in Sr$_{0.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$FBiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ with $x=0.5$ and $1.0$. By inspecting the muon asymmetry function we find that both phases do not coexist on the microscopic scale, but occupy different sample volumes. For $x=0.5$ and $x=1.0$ we find a ferromagnetic volume fraction of $\sim \, 8 \%$ and $\sim \, 30 \%$ at $T=0.25$ K, well below $T_{C} = 3.4$ K and $T_C = 3.3$ K, respectively. For $x=1.0$ ($T_{sc} = 2.9$ K) the superconducting phase occupies the remaining sample volume ($\sim \, 70 \%$), as shown by transverse field experiments that probe the Gaussian dam** due to the vortex lattice. We conclude ferromagnetism and superconductivity are macroscopically phase separated.

Nematic fluctuations occur in a wide range of physical systems from liquid crystals to biological molecules to solids such as exotic magnets, cuprates and iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. Nematic fluctuations are thought to be closely linked to the formation of Cooper-pairs in iron-based superconductors. It is unclear whether the anisotropy inherent in this nematicity arises from electronic spin or orbital degrees of freedom. We have studied the iron-based Mott insulators La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O$M$$_{2}$ $M$ = (S, Se) which are structurally similar to the iron pnictide superconductors. They are also in close electronic phase diagram proximity to the iron pnictides. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed a critical slowing down of nematic fluctuations as observed by the spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$). This is complemented by the observation of a change of electrical field gradient over a similar temperature range using Mössbauer spectroscopy. The neutron pair distribution function technique applied to the nuclear structure reveals the presence of local nematic $C_2$ fluctuations over a wide temperature range while neutron diffraction indicates that global $C_{4}$ symmetry is preserved. Theoretical modeling of a geometrically frustrated spin-$1$ Heisenberg model with biquadratic and single-ion anisotropic terms provides the interpretation of magnetic fluctuations in terms of hidden quadrupolar spin fluctuations. Nematicity is closely linked to geometrically frustrated magnetism, which emerges from orbital selectivity. The results highlight orbital order and spin fluctuations in the emergence of nematicity in Fe-based oxychalcogenides. The detection of nematic fluctuation within these Mott insulator expands the group of iron-based materials that show short-range symmetry-breaking.

Zero-field (ZF)-$μ$SR and $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer studies confirm static long range magnetic ordering below $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ $\approx$ 164\,K. Both transverse-field (TF) and ZF-$μ$SR results evidence 100\% magnetic volume fraction in the ordered state. The ZF-$μ$SR time spectra can be best described by a Bessel function, which is consistent with the helical magnetic structure proposed by neutron scattering experiments. The Mössbauer spectra are described in detail by considering the specific angular distribution of the local hyperfine field $B_{\mathrm{hyp}}$ with respect to the local electric field gradient. The $μ$SR spin-lattice relaxation rate exhibits two peaks: One at the magnetic ordering temperature related to critical magnetic fluctuations and another peak at 35\,K signaling the presence of a secondary low energy scale in Fe$_3$PO$_4$O$_3$.

Albeit the lattice parameters of all templates have comparable values, the in-plane lattice parameter of the FeSe0.7Te0.3 films varies significantly. We found that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of FeSe0.7Te0.3 thin films is strongly correlated with their a-axis lattice parameter. The highest Tc of over 19 K was observed for the film on bare CaF2 substrate, which is related to unexpectedly large in-plane compressive strain originating mostly from the thermal expansion mismatch between the FeSe0.7Te0.3 film and the substrate.

A quantum critical point (QCP) is currently being conjectured for the BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ system at the critical value $x_{\rm c} \approx$ 0.3. In the proximity of a QCP, all thermodynamic and transport properties are expected to scale with a single characteristic energy, given by the quantum fluctuations. Such an universal behavior has not, however, been found in the superconducting upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$. Here we report $H_{\rm c2}$-data for epitaxial thin films extracted from the electrical resistance measured in very high magnetic fields up to 67 Tesla. Using a multi-band analysis we find that $H_{\rm c2}$ is sensitive to the QCP, implying a significant charge carrier effective mass enhancement at the do**-induced QCP that is essentially band-dependent. Our results point to two qualitatively different groups of electrons in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. The first one (possibly associated to hot spots or whole Fermi sheets) has a strong mass enhancement at the QCP, and the second one is insensitive to the QCP. The observed duality could also be present in many other quantum critical systems.

Also an unusual small vortex liquid phase was observed at low temperatures, which is a striking difference to Co-doped BaFe2As2 thin films.

At present, there is still no consistent interpretation of the normal and superconducting properties of Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs). The strength of the el-el interaction and the role of correlation effects are under debate. Here, we examine several common materials and illustrate various problems and concepts that are generic for all FeSCs. Based on empirical observations and qualitative insight from density functional theory, we show that the superconducting and low-energy thermodynamic properties of the FeSCs can be described semi-quantitively within multiband Eliashberg theory. We account for an important high-energy mass renormalization phenomenologically, and in agreement with constraints provided by thermodynamic, optical, and angle-resolved photoemission data. When seen in this way, all FeSCs with $T_\mathrm{c} <$ 40~K studied so far are found to belong to an {\it intermediate} coupling regime. This finding is in contrast to the strong coupling scenarios proposed in the early period of the FeSC history. We also discuss several related issues, including the role of band shifts as measured by the positions of van Hove singularities, and the nature of a recently suggested quantum critical point in the strongly hole-doped systems AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = K, Rb, Cs). Using high-precision full relativistic GGA-band structure calculations, we arrive at a somewhat milder mass renormalization in comparison with previous studies. From the calculated mass anisotropies of all Fermi surface sheets, only the $\varepsilon$-pocket near the corner of the BZ is compatible with the experimentally observed anisotropy of the upper critical field. pointing to its dominant role in the superconductivity of these three compounds.

We report on the systematic characterization of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$)$_2$As$_2$ epitaxial thin films on CaF$_2$ substrate in view of their possible use for superconducting electronic applications. By using different and complementary techniques we studied the morphological characteristics of the surface, the structural properties, the magnetic response, and the superconducting properties in terms of critical temperature, critical current, and energy gaps. Particular attention was paid to the homogeneity of the films and to the comparison of their superconducting properties with those of single crystals of the same compound.

The Hall effect is a powerful tool for investigating carrier type and density. For single-band materials, the Hall coefficient is traditionally expressed simply by $R_H^{-1} = -en$, where $e$ is the charge of the carrier, and $n$ is the concentration. However, it is well known that in the critical region near a quantum phase transition, as it was demonstrated for cuprates and heavy fermions, the Hall coefficient exhibits strong temperature and do** dependencies, which can not be described by such a simple expression, and the interpretation of the Hall coefficient for Fe-based superconductors is also problematic. Here, we investigate thin films of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with compressive and tensile in-plane strain in a wide range of Co do**. Such in-plane strain changes the band structure of the compounds, resulting in various shifts of the whole phase diagram as a function of Co do**. We show that the resultant phase diagrams for different strain states can be mapped onto a single phase diagram with the Hall number. This universal plot is attributed to the critical fluctuations in multiband systems near the antiferromagnetic transition, which may suggest a direct link between magnetic and superconducting properties in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system.

Topological materials ranging from topological insulators to Weyl and Dirac semimetals form one of the most exciting current fields in condensed-matter research. Many half-Heusler compounds, RPtBi (R= rare earth) have been theoretically predicted to be topological semimetals. Among various topological attributes envisaged in RPtBi, topological surface states, chiral anomaly and planar Hall effect have been observed experimentally. Here, we report on an unusual intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the antiferromagnetic Heusler Weyl semimetal compounds GdPtBi and NdPtBi that is observed over a wide temperature range. In particular, GdPtBi exhibits an anomalous Hall conductivity of up to 60 ohm-1cm-1 and an anomalous Hall angle as large as 23%. Muon spin resonance (mu-SR) studies of GdPtBi indicate a sharp antiferromagnetic transition (T_N) at 9 K without any noticeable magnetic correlations above T_N. Our studies indicate that Weyl points in these half-Heuslers are induced by a magnetic field via exchange-splitting of the electronic bands at or near to the Fermi energy which is the source of the chiral anomaly and the AHE.

We have carried out detailed magnetic and transport studies of the new Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex (x = 0.5, 1) superconductors derived by do** Se in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2. Se-do** produces several effects: it suppresses semiconducting like behavior observed in the undoped Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2, ferromagnetic ordering temperature, TFM, decreases considerably from 7.5 K (in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2) to 3.5 K and superconducting transition temperature, Tc, gets enhanced slightly to 2.9 - 3.3 K. Thus in these Se-doped materials, TFM is just marginally higher than Tc. Magnetization studies provide an evidence of bulk superconductivity in Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex. Quite remarkably, as compared with the effective paramagnetic Ce-moment (~ 2.2 muB), the ferromagnetically ordered Ce-moment in the superconducting state is rather small (~ 0.1 muB). To the best of our knowledge, the title compounds are the first Ce-based superconducting itinerant ferromagnetic materials (Tc < TFM). We stress that Ce-4f electrons are responsible for both superconductivity and ferromagnetism just as U-5f electrons are in UCoGe. Furthermore, a novel feature of these materials is a dual hysteresis loop corresponding to both the ferromagnetism and the coexisting superconductivity. Such features of Sr0.5Ce0.5FBiS2-xSex put these materials apart from the well known U-containing superconducting ferromagnets reported so far.

Microstructura lly clean, isov alently P-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) single crystalline thin films have been prepared on MgO (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. These films show a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of over 30 K although P content is around 0.22, which is lower than the optimal one for single crystals (i.e., 0.33). The enhanced Tc at this do** level is attributed to the in-plane tensile strain. The strained film shows high transport self-field critical current densities (Jc) of over 6 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K, which are among the highest for Fe based superconductors (FeSCs). In-field Jc exceeds 0.1 MA/cm2 at m0H = 35 T for H||ab and m0H = 18 T for H||c at 4.2 K, respectively, in spite of moderate upper critical fields compared to other FeSCs with similar Tc. Structural investigations reveal no defects or misoriented grains pointing to strong pinning centers. We relate this unexpected high Jc to a strong enhancement of the vortex core energy at optimal Tc, driven by in-plane strain and do**. These unusually high Jc make P-doped Ba-122 very favorable for high-field magnet applications.

Highly textured NdFeAs(O,F) thin films have been grown on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD)-MgO/Y2O3/Hastelloy substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The oxypnictide coated conductors showed a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 43 K with a self-field critical current density (Jc) of 7.0 x 104 A/cm2 at 5 K, more than 20 times higher than powder-in-tube processed SmFeAs(O,F) wires. Albeit higher Tc as well as better crystalline quality than Co-doped BaFe2As2 coated conductors, in-field Jc of NdFeAs(O,F) was lower than that of Co-doped BaFe2As2. These results suggest that grain boundaries in oxypnictides reduce Jc significantly compared to that in Co-doped BaFe2As2 and, hence biaxial texture is necessary for high Jc.

The effect of hydrostatic pressure and partial Na substitution on the normal-state properties and the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals were investigated. It was found that a partial Na substitution leads to a deviation from the standard $T^2$ Fermi-liquid behavior in the temperature dependence of the normal-state resistivity. It was demonstrated that non-Fermi liquid like behavior of the resistivity for K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and some KFe$_2$As$_2$ samples can be explained by disorder effect in the multiband system with rather different quasiparticle effective masses. Concerning the superconducting state our data support the presence of a shallow minimum around 2 GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ for stoichiometric KFe$_2$As$_2$. The analysis of $T_c$ in the K$_{1-x}$Na$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ at pressures below 1.5 GPa showed, that the reduction of $T_c$ with Na substitution follows the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law with the critical temperature $T_{c0}$ of the clean system (without pair-breaking) which linearly depends on the pressure. Our observations, also, suggest that $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ is nearly independent of the lattice compression produced by the Na substitution. Further, we theoretically analyzed the behavior of the band structure under pressure within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). A qualitative agreement between the calculated and the recently in de Haas-van Alphen experiments [T. Terashima et al., Phys.Rev.B89, 134520(2014)] measured pressure dependencies of the Fermi-surface cross-sections has been found. These calculations, also, indicate that the observed minimum around 2~GPa in the pressure dependence of $T_c$ may occur without a change of the pairing symmetry.

The addenda heat capacity of the calorimeter is determined in the temperature range $0.02 \, \mathrm{K} \leq T \leq 0.54 \, \mathrm{K}$. The data of the \kn\ crystal imply the presence of a large $T^2$ contribution to the specific heat which gives evidence of $d$-wave order parameter symmetry in the superconducting state. To improve the measurements, a novel design for a calorimeter with a paramagnetic temperature sensor is presented. It promises a temperature resolution of $ΔT \approx 0.1 \, \mathrm{μK}$ and an addenda heat capacity less than $200 \, \mathrm{pJ/K}$ at $ T < 100 \, \mathrm{mK}$.

The discovery of superconductivity (SC) with a transition temperature, Tc, up to 65K in single-layer FeSe (bulk Tc =8K) films grown on SrTiO3 substrates has attracted special attention to Fe-based thin films. The high Tc is a consequence of the combined effect of electron transfer from the oxygen-vacant substrate to the FeSe thin film and lattice tensile strain. Here we demonstrate the realization of SC in the parent compound BaFe2As2 (no bulk Tc) just by tensile lattice strain without charge do**. We investigate the interplay between strain and SC in epitaxial BaFe2As2 thin films on Fe-buffered MgAl2O4 single crystalline substrates. The strong interfacial bonding between Fe and the FeAs sublattice increases the Fe-Fe distance due to the lattice misfit which leads to a suppression of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave and induces SC with bulk-Tc ?10K. These results highlight the role of structural changes in controlling the phase diagram of Fe-based superconductors.

We report a low-temperature specific heat study of high-quality single crystals of the heavily hole doped superconductor Ca$_{0.32}$Na$_{0.68}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. This compound exhibits bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature $T_c \approx 34$\,K, which is evident from the magnetization, transport, and specific heat measurements. The zero field data manifests a significant electronic specific heat in the normal state with a Sommerfeld coefficient $γ\approx 53$ mJ/mol K$^{2}$. Using a multi-band Eliashberg analysis, we demonstrate that the dependence of the zero field specific heat in the superconducting state is well described by a three-band model with an unconventional s$_\pm$ pairing symmetry and gap magnitudes $Δ_i$ of approximately 2.35, 7.48, and -7.50 meV. Our analysis indicates a non-negligible attractive intraband coupling, which contributes significantly to the relatively high value of $T_c$. The Fermi surface averaged repulsive and attractive coupling strengths are of comparable size and outside the strong coupling limit frequently adopted for describing high-$T_c$ iron pnictide superconductors. We further infer a total mass renormalization of the order of five, including the effects of correlations and electron-boson interactions.

We present a systematic study of the electronic specific heat jump ($ΔC_{\rm el}$) at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ of K$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. Both $T_c$ and $ΔC_{\rm el}$ monotonously decrease with increasing $x$. The specific heat jump scales approximately with a power-law, $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T_c^β$, with $β\approx 2$ determined by the impurity scattering rate, in contrast to most iron-pnictide superconductors, where the remarkable Bud'ko-Ni-Canfield (BNC) scaling $ΔC_{\rm el} \propto T^3$ has been found. Both the $T$ dependence of $C_{\rm el}(T)$ in the superconducting state and the nearly quadratic scaling of $ΔC_{\rm el}$ at $T_c$ are well described by the Eliashberg-theory for a two-band $d$-wave superconductor with weak pair-breaking due to nonmagnetic impurities. The disorder induced by the Na substitution significantly suppresses the small gaps leading to gapless states in the slightly disordered superconductor, which results in a large observed residual Sommerfeld coefficient in the superconducting state for $x > 0$.

The recently discovered oxypnictide superconductor SmFeAs(O,F) is the most attractive material among the Fe-based superconductors due to its highest transition temperature of 56 K and potential for high-field performance. In order to exploit this new material for superconducting applications, the knowledge and understanding of its electro-magnetic properties are needed. Recent success in fabricating epitaxial SmFeAs(O,F) thin films opens a great opportunity to explore their transport properties. Here we report on a high critical current density of over 10^5 A/cm^2 at 45 T and 4.2 K for both main field orientations, feature favourable for high-field magnet applications. Additionally, by investigating the pinning properties, we observed a dimensional crossover between the superconducting coherence length and the FeAs interlayer distance at 30-40 K, indicative of a possible intrinsic Josephson junction in SmFeAs(O,F) at low temperatures that can be employed in electronics applications such as a terahertz radiation source and a superconducting Qubit.

High-quality KFe2As2 (K122) single crystals synthesized by different techniques have been studied by magnetization and specific heat (SH) measurements. There are 2 types of samples both affected by disordered magnetic phases: (i) cluster-glass (CG) like or (ii) Griffiths phase (G) like. For (i) at low applied magnetic fields the T-dependence of the zero field cooled (ZFC) linear susceptibility (chi_l) exhibits an anomaly with an irreversible behavior in ZFC and field cooled (FC) data. This anomaly is related to the freezing temperature T_f. The extrapolated T_f to B=0 varies between 50 K and 90 K. Below T_f we observed a magnetic hysteresis in the field dependence of the isothermal magnetization (M(B)). The frequency shift of the freezing temperature delta T_f=Delta T_f/[T_fΔ(\ln ν)]\sim 0.05$ has an intermediate value, which provides evidence for the formation of a CG-like state in the K122 samples of type (i). The frequency dependence of their T_f follows a conventional power-law divergence of critical slowing down: tau=tau_0 [T_f(nu)/T_f(0)-1]^{-zν^{'}} with the critical exponent zν^{'}=10(2) and a relatively long characteristic time constant tau_0 =6.9 x10^{-11}$s also supporting a CG behavior. The large value of the Sommerfeld coefficient was related to magnetic contribution from a CG. Samples from (ii) did not show a hysteresis behavior for chi_l(T) and M(B). Below a crossover temperature T^* sim 40 K a power-law dependence in the chi_l propto T^[lambda_G-1}], with a non-universal lambda_G was observed, suggesting a quantum G-like behavior. In this case chi_l and M(B) can be scaled using the scaling function M_s(T,B)= B^{1-λ_{\tiny G}}Y(mu B/k_BT) with the scaling moment mu of the order of 3.5mu_b. The same non-universal exponent was found also in SH measurements, where the magnetic contribution C/T propto T^(lambda_G-1).

High-quality KFe2As2 single crystals have been studied by transport, magnetization and low-T specific heat measurements. Their analysis shows that superconductivity occurs (in some cases coexists) in the vicinity of disordered magnetic phases (Griffiths and spin-glass type) depending of the amount of local magnetic moments (probably excess Fe derived)and sample inhomogeneity. The achieved phenomenological description of our data including also data from the literature provides a consistent explanation of the observed non-Fermi-liquid behavior and of the nominally large experimental Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n about 94 mJ/mol K^2. We suggest that the intrinsic value (directly related to the itinerant quasi-particles) gamma_el about 60(10)mJ/mol K^2 is significantly reduced compared with gamma_n. Then an enhanced relative jump of the electronic specific heat Delta C_el/gamma_el T_c about 0.8 and a weak total electron-boson coupling constant lambda less or about 1 follow.

We report low-temperature specific heat measurements for high-quality single crystalline KFe2As2 (T_c about 3.5 K). The investigated zero-field specific heat data yields an unusually large nominal Sommerfeld coefficient gamma_n of 94(3) mJ/mol K^2 which is however significantly affected by extrinsic contributions as evidenced by a sizable residual linear specific heat and various theoretical considerations including also an analysis of Kadowaki-Woods relations. Then KFe2As2 should be classified as a weak to intermediately strong coupling superconductor with a total electron-boson coupling constant lambda_tot near 1 (including a calculated weak electron-phonon coupling constant of lambda_el-ph =0.17. From specific heat and ac susceptibility studies in external magnetic fields the magnetic phase diagram has been constructed. We confirm the high anisotropy of the upper critical fields B_c2(T) ranging from a factor of 5 near T_c to a slightly reduced value approaching T=0 for fields B || ab$ and || c and show that their ratio Gamma slightly exceeds the mass anisotropy of 4.35 derived from our full-relativistic LDA-band structure calculations. Its slight reduction when approaching T=0 is not a consequence of Pauli-limiting as in less perfect samples but point likely to a multiband effect. We also report irreversibility field data obtained from ac susceptibility measurements. The double-maximum in the T-dependence of its imaginary part for fields B || c indicates a peak-effect in the T-dependence of critical currents.

We report magnetization measurements of As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta (delta about 0.06) samples with improved superconducting properties as compared with As-stoichiometric optimally doped La-1111 samples. In this As-deficient system with almost homogeneously distributed As-vacancies (AV), as suggested by the (75)As-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements,we observe a strong enhancement of the spin-susceptibility by a factor of 3-7. This observation is attributed to the presence of an electronically localized state around each AV, carrying a magnetic moment of about 3.2 mu_Bohr per AV or 0.8 mu_Bohr/Fe atom. From theoretical considerations we find that the formation of a local moment on neighboring iron sites of an AV sets in when the local Coulomb interaction exceeds a critical value of about 1.0 eV in the dilute limit. Its estimated value amounts to ~ 2.5 eV and implies an upper bound of ~ 2 eV for the Coulomb repulsion at Fe sites beyond the first neighbor-shell of an AV. Electronic correlations are thus moderate/weak in doped La-1111. The strongly enhanced spin susceptibility is responsible for the Pauli limiting behavior of the superconductivity that we observe in As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta. In contrast, no Pauli limiting behavior is found for the optimally doped, As-stoichiometric LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs superconductor in accord with its low spin susceptibility.

It was found that linked superconducting structure is formed down to the minimum normalized density gamma= d/do= 0.16 (percolation threshold), where d is the density of MgB2 averaged over the sample, do= 2.62 g/cm3 is the X-ray density. Lattice parameters and critical temperature of the porous sample decrease with increasing porosity (decreasing gamma) and Tc2= 32K is minimal at gamma= 0.16. The grain boundaries in the porous samples are transparent for the current and Jc~3.105A/cm2 in self field at T= 20K in the samples with gamma~ 0.24.
