We investigate the Cherenkov radiation by a charge uniformly moving inside a dielectric cylindrical channel in a homogeneous medium. The expressions for the Fourier components of the electric and magnetic fields are derived by using the electromagnetic field Green tensor. The spectral distribution of the Cherenkov radiation intensity in the exterior medium is studied for the general case of frequency dispersion of the interior and exterior dielectric functions. It is shown that, under certain conditions on the dielectric permittivities, strong narrow peaks appear in the spectral distribution. The spectral locations of those peaks are specified and their heights and widths are estimated analytically on the base of the dispersion equation for the electromagnetic eigenmodes of the cylinder.

We investigate the emission of surface polaritons (SPs) by a charged particle moving inside a dielectric cylinder parallel to its axis. It is assumed that the cylinder is immersed into a homogeneous medium with negative dielectric permittivity in the spectral range under consideration (active medium). The expressions for scalar and vector potentials and for electromagnetic field strengths are provided inside and outside the cylinder. Those fields are expressed in terms of the SP eigenmodes of the waveguide and we give detailed analysis for their properties. The SP energy fluxes through the plane perpendicular to the cylinder axis are evaluated in the interior and exterior media. The energy flux is directed towards the charge motion inside the cylinder and towards the opposite direction in the exterior region. The relativistic effects may essentially increase the radiated energy. Important features of relativistic effects include the possibility of essential increase of the radiated energy, the narrowing the confinement region of the SP fields near the cylinder surface in the exterior region, enlarging the frequency range for radiated SPs, and the decrease of the cutoff factor for radiation at small wavelengths compared with the waveguide radius. The general results are specified for the Drude dispersion in the exterior medium. By using the Green tensor we also evaluate the total energy losses of the charged particle for general case of the interior and exterior dielectric functions. The corresponding results are compared with those previously discussed in the literature. The numerical data are presented in terms of scale invariant quantities that allows to clarify the features of the SP radiation for different values of the waveguide radius.

We investigate the electromagnetic radiation from a chain of relativistic charged particles uniformly rotating along equatorial orbit around a dielectric ball. For weak absorption of radiation in the ball material, at certain rotation frequency the radiation intensity becomes significantly higher than the corresponding value for a chain of charges rotating in free space or in a transparent medium with the same dielectric constant as that for the ball material. In the case of an equidistant distribution of charged particles along the orbit we determine the values of parameters of the problem for which the charges in the chain emit coherently. It is shown that the radiation intensity on a given harmonic increases in proportion to the square of the number of emitting charges. We also show that the relative shifts in the particles locations up to 10\% do not destroy the coherence properties of the radiation. It is demonstrated that the coherence effects may also dominate in the radiation intensity for chains with non-equidistant distributions of particles. The numerical results obtained for different dielectric balls have revealed the emitted radiation to be in the GHz/THz frequency ranges. The high-power radiation of the chain propagates in the angular range with respect to the rotation plane determined by the Cherenkov condition for the velocity of the chain projection onto the ball surface.

We investigate the radiation from a charged particle moving outside a dielectric cylinder parallel to its axis. It is assumed that the cylinder is immersed into a homogeneous medium. The expressions are given for the vector potential and for the electric and magnetic fields. The spectral distributions are studied for three types of the radiations: (i) Cherenkov radiation (CR) in the exterior medium, (ii) radiation on the guided modes of the dielectric cylinder, and (iii) emission of surface polaritons. Unlike the first two types of radiations, there is no velocity threshold for the generation of surface polaritons. The corresponding radiation is present in the spectral range where the dielectric permittivities of the cylinder and surrounding medium have opposite signs. The spectral range of the emitted surface polaritons becomes narrower with decreasing energy of the particle. The general results are illustrated for a special case of the Drude model for dispersion of the dielectric permittivity of the cylinder. We show that the presence of the cylinder may lead to the appearance of strong narrow peaks in the spectral distribution of the CR in the exterior medium. The conditions are specified for the appearance of those peaks and the corresponding heights and widths are analytically estimated. The collective effects of particles in bunches are discussed.

We investigate the radiation from a bunch of relativistic electrons moving along the cylindrical waveguide axis, assuming that the waveguide is partially loaded by a medium with periodic dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. The spectral distribution of the radiation energy flux through the cross section of the waveguide is studied at large distances from the medium. The analysis is based on the corresponding exact solution of Maxwell equations for the case of a single electron moving along the waveguide axis. The results of numerical calculations are presented in the special case of layered medium consisting of a finite number of dielectric plates separated by vacuum gaps. We show that under certain conditions on the problem parameters the quasi-coherent Cherenkov radiation generated by the electron bunch inside the plates is self-amplified at certain waveguide modes. A visual explanation of this phenomenon is provided that reproduces the main features to rather good accuracy.

We study the angular distribution of the radiation from a relativistic charged particle uniformly rotating along an equatorial orbit around a dielectric ball. Earlier it was shown that for some values of the problem parameters and in the case of weak absorption in the ball material, the radiation intensity on a given harmonic can be essentially larger than that for the same charge rotating in the vacuum or in a homogeneous transparent medium having the same real part of dielectric permittivity as the ball material. The generation of such high power radiation is a consequence of the constructive superposition of electromagnetic oscillations of Cherenkov radiation induced near the trajectory of the particle and partially locked inside the ball. The angular distribution of the number of the emitted quanta is investigated for such high power radiation. It is shown that the radiation is mainly located in the angular range near the rotation plane determined by the Cherenkov condition for the velocity of the charge image on the ball surface. The numerical analysis is given for balls made of strontium titanate, melted quartz and teflon in the gigahertz and terahertz frequency ranges.

We investigate the radiation from a charged particle rotating around a dielectric cylinder with a negative real part of dielectric permittivity. For the general case of frequency dispersion in dielectric permittivity, expressions are derived for the electric and magnetic fields and for the angular density of the radiation intensity on a given harmonic. Compared with the case of a cylinder with positive real part of the permittivity, new interesting features arise in the nonrelativistic limit and for the radiation at small angles with respect to the cylinder axis. Another feature is the appearance of sharp narrow peaks in the angular density of the radiation intensity for large harmonics. We analytically estimate the height, width and the location of these peaks. The influence of the imaginary part of dielectric permittivity on the characteristics of the peaks is discussed. The analytical results are illustrated by numerical examples. We show that the radiation intensity on a given harmonic, integrated over the angles, can be essentially amplified by the presence of the cylinder.

The present document discusses plans for a compact, next-generation multi-purpose detector at the LHC as a follow-up to the present ALICE experiment. The aim is to build a nearly massless barrel detector consisting of truly cylindrical layers based on curved wafer-scale ultra-thin silicon sensors with MAPS technology, featuring an unprecedented low material budget of 0.05% X$_0$ per layer, with the innermost layers possibly positioned inside the beam pipe. In addition to superior tracking and vertexing capabilities over a wide momentum range down to a few tens of MeV/$c$, the detector will provide particle identification via time-of-flight determination with about 20~ps resolution. In addition, electron and photon identification will be performed in a separate shower detector. The proposed detector is conceived for studies of pp, pA and AA collisions at luminosities a factor of 20 to 50 times higher than possible with the upgraded ALICE detector, enabling a rich physics program ranging from measurements with electromagnetic probes at ultra-low transverse momenta to precision physics in the charm and beauty sector.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. First beams would be available by 2035, marking the beginning of a broad CLIC physics programme spanning 25-30 years.

Evanescent waves in a metal thin film with nonlocality are found to propagate in normal direction to film surface with quenched (to zero) energy dissipation associated with intra-band electron transitions when wave numbers satisfy a resonant condition. It is shown that resonant quenching of energy dissipation (RQED) effect occurs in metal films with thicknesses of less or larger than, but still on the order of, the nonlocality scale length. RQED ceases to exist in metal films whose thickness exceeds a cutoff length or in metal films with local dielectric permittivity. Resonant quenching of energy dissipation is caused by destructive interference of partial contributions to electric displacement field, spatially dispersed over thin film thickness. It is demonstrated that RQED effect can be used for designing a new type of plasmonic waveguides, such as a slit waveguide representing a metal film with a narrow slit filled with a dielectric, to achieve near zero propagation losses for plasmonic modes with few nanometer scale confinement.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. Subsequent stages will focus on measurements of rare Higgs processes, as well as searches for new physics processes and precision measurements of new states, e.g. states previously discovered at LHC or at CLIC itself. In the 2012 CLIC Conceptual Design Report, a fully optimised 3 TeV collider was presented, while the proposed lower energy stages were not studied to the same level of detail. This report presents an updated baseline staging scenario for CLIC. The scenario is the result of a comprehensive study addressing the performance, cost and power of the CLIC accelerator complex as a function of centre-of-mass energy and it targets optimal physics output based on the current physics landscape. The optimised staging scenario foresees three main centre-of-mass energy stages at 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV for a full CLIC programme spanning 22 years. For the first stage, an alternative to the CLIC drive beam scheme is presented in which the main linac power is produced using X-band klystrons.

Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to π^+ π^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $πN$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- π^0$ with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to π^+π^- π^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cosθ_{π^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while kee** the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. (.../...)

A detailed study of the semigroup $C^\ast$-algebra is presented. This $C^\ast$-algebra appears as a "deformation" of the continuous functions algebra on a compact abelian group. Considering semigroup $C^\ast$-algebras in this framework we construct a compact quantum semigroups category. Then the initial group is a compact subgroup of the new compact quantum semigroup, the natural action of this group is described. The dual space of such $C^\ast$-algebra is endowed with Banach *-algebra structure, which contains the algebra of measures on a compact group. The dense weak Hopf *-algebra is given. It is shown that the constructed category of compact quantum semigroups can be embedded to the category of abelian semigroups.

We present a study of the inclusive J/psi cross section at 2.76 TeV and 5.5 TeV. The energy dependence of the cross section, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are evaluated phenomenologically. Their knowledge is crucial as a reference for the interpretation of A-A and p-A J/psi results at the LHC. Our approach is the following: first, we estimate the energy evolution of the pt-integrated J/psi cross section at mid-rapidity; then, we evaluate the rapidity dependence; finally, we study the transverse momentum distribution trend. Whenever possible, both theory driven (based on pQCD predictions) and functional form (data driven fits) calculations are discussed. Our predictions are compared with the recently obtained results by the ALICE collaboration in pp collisions at 2.76 TeV.

The radiation from a charge moving along a helical trajectory inside a cylindrical hole in homogeneous dielectric medium is investigated. Prompted by availability of materials with large dielectric permittivity $ε$ and small absorption, we discuss the features of this type of radiation for media with $ε\gg 1$. It is shown that there are high peaks in the angular distribution of radiation intensity at well-defined harmonics. The conditions are specified for the cavity-to-helix radii ratio, $ρ_{1}/ρ_{0}$, under which the angle-integrated radiation intensity on some harmonics exceeds that in the empty space. Though the amplification of radiation intensity increases with increasing $ε$, the corresponding "resonant" values of $ρ_{1}/ρ_{0}$ ratio are practically independent of the dielectric permittivity of surrounding medium. It is shown that an analogous amplification of radiation takes place essentially for the same values of $ρ_{1}/ρ_{0}$ also for the radiation in a cylindrical waveguide with conducting walls. An explanation of this phenomenon is given.

It was shown that at some harmonics, in case of weak absorption of radiation in the ball material, the electron may generate radiation field quanta exceeding in several dozens of times those generated by electron rotating in a continuous, infinite and transparent medium having the same real part of permittivity as the ball material. The rise of high power radiation is due to the fact that electromagnetic oscillations of Cherenkov radiation induced along the trajectory of particle are partially locked inside the ball and superimposed in nondestructive way.

At high energies, when the positronium atom formation time $τ_f$ becomes greater than the target length L, it is the free $e^+e^-$ pair that propagates through the target and the formation of positronium atoms take place out of the target. In the framework of the light-cone technique we consider the interaction of $e^+e^-$ pair with the screened Coulomb field of atoms in matter and obtain the analytical expressions for relativistic positronium atoms photoproduction cross sections on extended targets. The relations to free pair photoproduction on extended targets are discussed.

Abstract:
The abnormally intense radiation due to the uniform rotation of electron around the equatorial plane of a dielectric sphere is obtained. It takes place when the sphere surface is at a specific distance from the electron orbit and when the Cherenkov condition for electron and the matter of the sphere is satisfied.
