The energy demands of data centers are increasing and are expected to grow exponentially. Reducing the energy consumption of data centers decreases operational expenses, as well as their carbon footprint. We design techniques to reduce data center power consumption by leveraging Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and programmable data plane concepts. Relying solely on in-data plane registers, our proposed system P4Green consolidates traffic in the least number of network switches and shifts workloads to the servers with the available renewable energy. Unlike existing SDN-based solutions, P4Green's operation does not depend on a centralized controller, making the system scalable and failure-resistant. Our proof-of-concept simulations show that traffic consolidation can reduce data centers' aggregation switch usage by 36% compared to standard data center load balancing techniques, while workload control can boost renewable energy consumption for 46% of the daily traffic.

Computational protein design has the potential to deliver novel molecular structures, binders, and catalysts for myriad applications. Recent neural graph-based models that use backbone coordinate-derived features show exceptional performance on native sequence recovery tasks and are promising frameworks for design. A statistical framework for modeling protein sequence landscapes using Tertiary Motifs (TERMs), compact units of recurring structure in proteins, has also demonstrated good performance on protein design tasks. In this work, we investigate the use of TERM-derived data as features in neural protein design frameworks. Our graph-based architecture, TERMinator, incorporates TERM-based and coordinate-based information and outputs a Potts model over sequence space. TERMinator outperforms state-of-the-art models on native sequence recovery tasks, suggesting that utilizing TERM-based and coordinate-based features together is beneficial for protein design.

Several approaches to mitigating the Forwarding Information Base (FIB) overflow problem were developed and software solutions using FIB aggregation are of particular interest. One of the greatest concerns to deploy these algorithms to real networks is their high running time and heavy computational overhead to handle thousands of FIB updates every second. In this work, we manage to use a single tree traversal to implement faster aggregation and update handling algorithm with much lower memory footprint than other existing work. We utilize 6-year realistic IPv4 and IPv6 routing tables from 2011 to 2016 to evaluate the performance of our algorithm with various metrics. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that IPv6 FIB aggregation has been performed. Our new solution is 2.53 and 1.75 times as fast as the-state-of-the-art FIB aggregation algorithm for IPv4 and IPv6 FIBs, respectively, while achieving a near-optimal FIB aggregation ratio.

Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals. We observe that many attacks to IoTs are launched in a collusive way, such as brute-force hacking usernames and passwords, to target at a particular victim. However, most of the time our defending mechanisms to such kind of attacks are carried out individually and independently, which leads to ineffective and weak defense. To this end, we propose to leverage Software Defined Networks (SDN) to enable cooperative security for legacy IP-based IoT devices. SDN decouples control plane and data plane, and can help bridge the knowledge divided between the application and network layers. In this paper, we discuss the IoT security problems and challenges, and present an SDN-based architecture to enable IoT security in a cooperative manner. Furthermore, we implemented a platform that can quickly share the attacking information with peer controllers and block the attacks. We carried out our experiments in both virtual and physical SDN environments with OpenFlow switches. Our evaluation results show that both environments can scale well to handle attacks, but hardware implementation is much more efficient than a virtual one.

However, the volatility of renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, impedes the operation of green data centers. In this work, we leverage Software Defined Networking (SDN) to build GRASP, a platform that schedules job requests to distributed data centers according to the amount of green energy available at each site. GRASP can be re-configured with different scheduling algorithms to address diverse factors such as amounts of instantly available solar power, wind power and CPU load of data centers. We utilize realistic green energy datasets from National Solar Radiation Database and evaluate GRASP in the GENI testbed; in addition, we create necessary GENI artifacts to repeat our experiment. GRASP can serve as a practical platform to test various job scheduling mechanisms for distributed green data centers.

The current Internet routing ecosystem is neither sustainable nor economical. More than 711K IPv4 routes and more than 41K IPv6 routes exist in current global Forwarding Information Base (FIBs) with growth rates increasing. This rapid growth has serious consequences, such as creating the need for costly FIB memory upgrades and increased potential for Internet service outages. And while FIB memories are power-hungry and prohibitively expensive, more than 70\% of the routes in FIBs carry no traffic for long time periods, a wasteful use of these expensive resources. Taking advantage of the emerging concept of programmable data plane, we design a programmable FIB caching architecture to address the existing concerns. Our preliminary evaluation results show that the architecture can significantly mitigate the global routing scalability and poor FIB utilization issues.

Due to network practices such as traffic engineering and multi-homing, the number of routes---also known as IP prefixes---in the global forwarding tables has been increasing significantly in the last decade and continues growing in a super linear trend. One of the most promising solutions is to use smart Forwarding Information Base (FIB) aggregation algorithms to aggregate the prefixes and convert a large table into a small one. Doing so poses a research question, however, i.e., how can we quickly verify that the original table yields the same forwarding behaviors as the aggregated one? We answer this question in this paper, including addressing the challenges caused by the longest prefix matching (LPM) lookups. In particular, we propose the VeriTable algorithm that can employ a single tree/trie traversal to quickly check if multiple forwarding tables are forwarding equivalent, as well as if they could result in routing loops or black holes. The VeriTable algorithm significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art work for both IPv4 and IPv6 tables in every aspect, including the total running time, memory access times and memory consumption.

We consider adiabatic interaction of five-level atomic systems and their media with four short laser pulses under the condition of all two-photon detunings being zero. We derive analytical expressions for eigenvalues of the system's Hamiltonian and determine conditions of adiabaticity for both the atom and the medium. We analyse, in detail, the system's behaviour when the eigenvalue with non-vanishing energy is realized. As distinct from the usual dark state of a five-level system (corresponding to zero eigenvalue), which is a superposition of three states, in our case the superposition of four states does work. This seemingly unfavourable case is nevertheless demonstrated to imitate completely a three-level system not only for a single atom but also in the medium, since the propagation equations are also split into those for three- and two-level media separately. We show that, under certain conditions, all the coherent effects observed in three-level media, such as population transfer, light slowing, light storage, and so on, may efficiently be realized in five-level media. This has an important advantage that the light storage can be performed twice in the same medium, i.e., the second pulse can be stored without retrieving the first one, and then the two pulses can be retrieved in any desired sequence.

We consider the population transfer process in a Lambda-type atomic medium of unequal oscillator strengths by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage via bright-state (b-STIRAP) taking into account propagation effects. Using both analytic and numerical methods we show that the population transfer efficiency is sensitive to the ratio q_p/q_s of the transition oscillator strengths. We find that the case q_p>q_s is more detrimental for population transfer process as compared to the case where $q_p \leq q_s$. For this case it is possible to increase medium dimensions while permitting efficient population transfer. A criterion determining the interaction adiabaticity in the course of propagation process is found. We also show that the mixing parameter characterizing the population transfer propagates superluminally.

The Toffoli gate is an essential logic element, which permits implementation of a reversible processor. It is of relevance both for classical as well as quantum logics. We propose and theoretically study all-optical implementations of three-bit and four-bit Toffoli gates by application of adiabatic population transfer techniques. For a three-bit Toffoli gate we use variants of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) processes in a $Λ$-type level scheme, driven by two laser pulses at sufficiently large detunings. For the implementation of a four-bit Toffoli gate, we apply reversible adiabatic population transfer in five-level quantum systems, interacting with three laser pulses. We demonstrate correct all-optical implementation of the truth table of three-bit and four-bit Toffoli gates. Moreover, we derive conditions for adiabatic evolution of the population dynamics and robust operation of the gates.

We consider a medium of multilevel atomic systems interacting with radiation pulses. A relatively simple technique of analytic calculations is proposed, which allows revealing all necessary conditions (with sufficient conditions to be checked separately) imposed on the interaction parameters, for which the mean dipole moment of a multilevel atomic medium vanishes, i.e., the medium becomes transparent via adiabatic interaction. The proposed technique is based on the method of quasienergies and illustrated for three- and five-level atomic systems. The necessary conditions for the propagation length where the interaction adiabaticity is preserved in the medium are obtained.

We report observation of a narrow (sub-natural) and high-contrast resonance of increased absorption ("bright" resonance) in Rb cell with Ne buffer gas under previously unexplored experimental conditions for coupling and probe radiation configuration. The coupling laser stabilized frequency is detuned by ~ 3 GHz from 5S1/2, Fg=3 --> 5P3/2, Fe=2,3,4 transitions, while the probe laser frequency is scanned across these transitions. We believe the bright resonance formation, occurring when the probe laser frequency is blue-shifted from the coupling frequency by a value of the ground state hyperfine splitting, is caused predominantly by a 2-photon absorption of the probe radiation 5S1/2, Fg=2 --> 5S1/2, Fg=3 with 5P3/2 as an intermediate state. We also report and interpret splitting of the bright resonance into 6 well resolved and contrast components in moderate magnetic fields (B ~ 10 - 250 G).

We show that cluster expansions (CE), previously used to model solid-state materials with binary or ternary configurational disorder, can be extended to the protein design problem. We present a generalized CE framework, in which properties such as energy can be unambiguously expanded in the amino-acid sequence space. The CE coarse grains over nonsequence degrees of freedom (e.g., side-chain conformations) and thereby simplifies the problem of designing proteins, or predicting the compatibility of a sequence with a given structure, by many orders of magnitude. The CE is physically transparent, and can be evaluated through linear regression on the energies of training sequences. We show, as example, that good prediction accuracy is obtained with up to pairwise interactions for a coiled-coil backbone, and that triplet interactions are important in the energetics of a more globular zinc-finger backbone.

The four most stable structures of Ni$_N$ clusters with $N$ from 2 to 150 have been determined using a combination of the embedded-atom method in the version of Daw, Baskes and Foiles, the {\it variable metric/quasi-Newton} method, and our own {\it Aufbau/Abbau} method. A systematic study of energetics, structure, growth, and stability of also larger clusters has been carried through without more or less severe assumptions on the initial geometries in the structure optimization, on the symmetry, or on bond lengths. It is shown that cluster growth is predominantly icosahedral with $islands$ of {\it fcc}, {\it tetrahedral} and {\it decahedral} growth. For the first time in unbiased computations it is found that Ni$_{147}$ is the multilayer (third Mackay) icosahedron. Further, we point to an enhanced ability of {\it fcc} clusters to compete with the icosahedral and decahedral structures in the vicinity of N=79. In addition, it is shown that conversion from the {\it hcp}/anti-Mackay kind of icosahedral growth to the {\it fcc}/Mackay one occurs within a transition layer including several cluster sizes. Moreover, we present and apply different analytical tools in studying structural and energetic properties of such a large class of clusters. These include means for identifying the overall shape, the occurrence of atomic shells, the similarity of the clusters with, e.g., fragments of the {\it fcc} crystal or of a large icosahedral cluster, and a way of analysing whether the $N$-atom cluster can be considered constructed from the $(N-1)$-atom one by adding an extra atom. In addition, we compare in detail with results from chemical-probe experiment. Maybe the most central result is that first for clusters with $N$ above 80 general trends can be identified.

The Josephson vortices dynamic in superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ ceramics was studied in frequency range 0.01-0.5 Hz by ac susceptibility measurements in non complete magnetic flux penetration regime. We have found that with the increase of magnetic field frequency starting from 0.01 Hz the ac magnetic response shows complex frequency dependence: in one half period of a sinusoidal field appear two asymmetrical peaks of real $Δχ\prime$ and imaginary $χ\prime\prime$ parts of the ac susceptibility. The analysis of experimental results has led to an idea that probably the volume (diameter) of Josephson vortices increases during its movement. The experimental results are discussed in terms of Josephson vortex - vortex interactions.

Abstract:
We investigate propagation of a pulse pair in a three-level medium under the adiabatic following condition for the general case of unequal oscillator strengths. Exact analytical solutions to the propagation equations have been obtained. It is shown that propagation dynamics strongly depends on the relationship between oscillator strengths. Lienard-Wiechert potentials of the relativistic spinning particle with anomalous magnetic moment in pseudoclassical theory are constructed. General expressions for the Lienard-Wiechert potentials are used for investigation of some specific cases of the motion of the spinning particle. In particular the spin dependence of the intensity of the synchrotron radiation of the transversely polarized particle performing uniform circular motion is considered. When the movement of the particle in external homogeneous magnetic field the obtained formulae coincide with those known from quantum theory of radiation. The dependence of the polarization of the synchrotron radiation on the spin of the particle is investigated.

The canonical quantization of $D=2n$ dimensional Dirac spinning particle with anomalous magnetic moment in the external Yang-Mills field is carried out in the gauge which allows to describe simultaneously particles and antiparticles (massive and massless) already at the classical level. Pseudoclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is used to obtain canonical (Newton-Wigner) coordinates and in terms of these variables the theory is quantized.
