Partial crystallization in a Zr-based bulk metallic glass in selective laser melting

Recent studies on AM from Zr-based BMGs by selective laser melting(SLM)has proved the possibility of attaining the amorphous state and revealed partial crystallization to be the principal drawback of this process.The present work aims to analyze the conditions for partial crystallization and try to control it by optimizing the process parameters.A comprehensive parametric analysis is accomplished in single-track SLM experiments with Zr-based BMG alloy Vit 106.The observed microstructures are related to the temperature fields and thermal cycles estimated by an analytic heat-transfer model in the laser-impact zone.In the cross section of a laser track,a central bright domain is identified as the remelted zone.An annular darker crystallization zone encircles the remelted zone.The model fits the experimentally obtained dependencies of the remelted zone size versus laser power and scanning speed.It seems that primary crystalline inclusions existing in the substrate before laser processing dissolve at the laser melting.The mean cooling rate in the remelted zone is much greater than the critical cooling rate.Therefore,homogeneous nucleation isn't expected.Nevertheless,the theoretically estimated crystallization times are sufficient for a considerable crystal growth in the heat-affected zone where primary crystalline inclusions and nuclei are not completely dissolved △ Less

Evidence of a dibaryon spectrum in coherent $π^0π^0 d$ photoproduction at forward deuteron angles

Abstract: The coherent reaction, $γd \rightarrow π^0π^0 d$ was studied with the BGOOD experiment at ELSA from threshold to a centre-of-mass energy of 2850\,MeV. A full kinematic reconstruction was made, with final state deuterons identified in the forward spectrometer and $π^0$ decays in the central BGO Rugby Ball. A low mass enhancement in the $π^0π^0$ invariant mass is also observed at the $d^*(2380)$ centre-of-mass energy which is consistent with the ABC effect. At higher centre-of-mass energies, a narrow peak in the $π^0 d$ invariant mass at 2114\,MeV/c$^2$ with a width of 20\,MeV/c$^2$ supports a sequential two-dibaryon decay mechanism. △ Less

The existence of this structure cannot be co… ▽ More The reaction $γp \rightarrow p π^0 η$ has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn for incident photon energies from threshold up to 3.1 GeV. This paper has been motivated by the recently claimed observation of a narrow structure in the M$_{Nη}$ invariant mass distribution at a mass of 1678 MeV/$c^2$. The existence of this structure cannot be confirmed in the present work. Instead, for E$_γ$ = 1400 - 1500 MeV and the cut M$_{pπ^0} \le 1190 $ MeV/$c^2$ a statistically significant structure in the M$_{pη}$ invariant mass distribution near 1700 MeV/$c^2$ is observed with a width of $Γ\approx 35$ MeV/$c^2$ while the mass resolution is $σ_{res}$ = 5 MeV/$c^2$. Increasing the incident photon energy from 1420 to 1540 MeV this structure shifts in mass from $\approx$ 1700MeV/c$^2$ to $\approx$ 1725 MeV/$c^2$; the width increases to about 50 MeV/$c^2$ and decreases thereafter. The cross section associated with this structure reaches a maximum of $\approx$ 100 nb around E$_γ \approx$ 1490 MeV (W $\approx $ 1920 MeV), which coincides with the $p a_0$ threshold. Three scenarios are discussed which might be the origin of this structure in the M$_{pη}$ invariant mass distribution. Abstract: $K^+Λ(1405)$ photoproduction has been studied at the BGOOD experiment via the all neutral decay, $Λ(1405)\rightarrowΣ^0π^0$. The unique BGOOD experimental setup allows both the cross section and $Λ(1405)$ invariant mass distribution (line shape) to be measured over a broad $K^+$ polar angle range, extending to extreme forward $K^+… ▽ More $K^+Λ(1405)$ photoproduction has been studied at the BGOOD experiment via the all neutral decay, $Λ(1405)\rightarrowΣ^0π^0$. The unique BGOOD experimental setup allows both the cross section and $Λ(1405)$ invariant mass distribution (line shape) to be measured over a broad $K^+$ polar angle range, extending to extreme forward $K^+$ angles unattainable at previous experiments. Evidence is provided for the role of a triangle singularity driven by the $N^*(2030)$ resonance, which appears to contribute significantly to $K^+Λ(1405)$ photoproduction. This is observed in both the angular distributions and the integrated cross section which was determined with unprecedented energy resolution. The measured line shape is also in agreement with the previous results of CLAS and ANKE, and is consistent with two poles derived in $χ$PT based models. △ Less

Abstract: Since the discovery of the $Λ(1405)$, it remains poorly described by conventional constituent quark models, and it is a candidate for having an "exotic" meson-baryon or "penta-quark" structure, similar to states recently reported in the hidden charm sector. The $Λ(1405)$ can be produced in the reaction $γp \rightarrow K^+Λ(1405)$. The setup consists of a highly segmented BGO calorimeter surrounding the target, with a particle tracking magnetic spectrometer at forward angles. BGO-OD is ideal for investigating low momentum transfer processes due to the acceptance and high momentum resolution at forward angles. In particular, this enables the investigation of strangeness photoproduction where t-channel exchange mechanisms play an important role. This also allows access to low momentum exchange kinematics where extended, molecular structure may manifest in reaction mechanisms. First key results at low $t$ indicate a cusp-like structure in $K^+Σ^0$ photoproduction at $W = 1900$\,MeV, line shapes and differential cross sections for $K^+Λ$(1405)$\rightarrow K^+Σ^0π^0$, and a peak structure in $K^0_SΣ^0$ photoproduction. The peak in the $K^0_SΣ^0$ channel appears consistent with meson-baryon generated states, where equivalent models have been used to describe the $P_C$ pentaquark candidates in the heavy charmed quark sector. △ Less

Abstract: Experimental data on $πN $ scattering in the elastic energy region $W \leq 1.45 GeV $ are analyzed within the $K$-matrix approach with effective Lagrangians. The charge splitting in $δ^{++}_{33} $ and $δ^{0}_{33}$ phases obtaned in the phase shift analisys is studed . Observation of Narrow $N^+(1685)$ and $N^0(1685)$ Resonances in $γN \to ηπN$ Reactions

Abstract: Observation of a narrow structure at $W\sim 1.68$ GeV in the excitation functions of some photon- and pion-induced reactions may signal a new narrow isospin-1/2 $N(1685)$ resonance. New data on the $γN \to πηN$ reactions from GRAAL seems to reveal the signals of both $N^+(1685)$ and $N^0(1685)$ resonances. Semiclassical approximation to the Hartree-Fock method in finite nuclei

The binding energies calculated in this approach do not contain shell effects and, in this sense, they are analogous to those obtained from the mass formula. The current angular distributions show a forward-backward asymmetry, which was previously not seen, but was predicted by model calculations including an additional narrow $P_{11}$ state. Furthermore, data obtained with a longitudinally polarized, deuterated butanol target and a circularly polarized photon beam were analyzed to determine the double polarization observable $E$. Both data sets together were also used to extract the helicity dependent cross sections $σ_{1/2}$ and $σ_{3/2}$. Abstract: The differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements for the reaction $γp\to pω$ were measured using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment for initial photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 2.5 GeV. These observables were measured from the radiative decay of the $ω$ meson, $ω\toπ^0γ$. The cross sections cover the full angular range and show the full extent of the $t$-c… ▽ More The differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements for the reaction $γp\to pω$ were measured using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment for initial photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 2.5 GeV. These observables were measured from the radiative decay of the $ω$ meson, $ω\toπ^0γ$. The cross sections cover the full angular range and show the full extent of the $t$-channel forward rise. The overall shape of the angular distributions in the differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements are in fair agreement with previous data. In addition, for the first time, a beam of linearly-polarized tagged photons in the energy range from 1150 MeV to 1650 MeV was used to extract polarized spin-density matrix elements. These data were included in the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis (PWA). The dominant contribution to $ω$ photoproduction near threshold was found to be the $3/2^+$ partial wave, which is primarily due to the sub-threshold $N(1720)\,3/2^+$ resonance. At higher energies, pomeron-exchange was found to dominate whereas $π$-exchange remained small. These $t$-channel contributions as well as further contributions from nucleon resonances were necessary to describe the entire dataset: the $1/2^-$, $3/2^-$, and $5/2^+$ partial waves were also found to contribute significantly. △ Less

The $π^0 γ$ cross section of 0.3 nb/MeV/sr observed in the bound state energy regime between -100 and 0 MeV may be accounted for by yield leaking into the bound state regime because of the large in-medium width of the $ω$-meson. A comparison of the measured total energy distribution with calculations suggests the real part $V_0$ of the $ω~^{11}$B potential to be small and only weakly attractive with $V_0(ρ=ρ_0) = -15\pm$ 35(stat) $\pm$20(syst) MeV in contrast to some theoretical predictions of attractive potentials with a depth of 100 - 150 MeV. △ Less

In five years passed from the idea of the experiment till the start of the data taking in April of 2009, a new apparatus was build from scratch at the universal beam line 322 of ITEP proton synchrotron U-10. The setup is essentially a non-magnetic spectrometer with a liquid hydrogen target based on the large aperture drift chambers with hexagonal structure. The unique properties of the beam line allow individual pion momentum measurement with the accuracy better than 0.1%. The momentum tagging is done with 1 mm pitch proportional chambers located in the first focus of the beam line. The design of numerous subsystems of the setup is based on modern electronic components including microprocessors and FPGA. All the subsystems are tuned and tested both individually and as parts of the whole working setup. The distributed data acquisition system uses widely spread USB and Ethernet protocols, which allows to achieve high performance and take full advantage of the industrial solutions. △ Less

The experiment is of "formation" type, i.e. the resonances are produced in s-channel and the scan over the invariant mass is done by the variation of the incident pion momentum which is measured with the accuracy of 0.1% with a set of 1 mm pitch proportional chambers located in the first focus of the beam line. The reaction is identified by a magnetless spectrometer based on wire drift chambers with a hexagonal structure. Background suppression in this case depends on the angular resolution, so the amount of matter in the chambers and the setup was minimized to reduce multiple scattering. The measurements started in 2009 with the setup optimized for elastic pion-proton scattering. With 3 billions of triggers already recorded the differential cross section of the elastic pi p-scattering on a liquid hydrogen target in the region of the diffraction minimum is measured with statistical accuracy about 1% in 1 MeV steps in terms of the invariant mass. Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons off the deuteron

No significant effects beyond the folding of the free cross section with the momentum distribution of the bound protons have been found. These Fermi motion effects can be removed by an analysis using the invariant mass of the $η$-nucleon pairs reconstructed from the final state four-momenta of the particles. The total cross section for quasi-free $η$-photoproduction off the neutron reveals even without correction for Fermi motion a pronounced bump-like structure around 1 GeV of incident photon energy, which is not observed for the proton. This structure is even narrower in the invariant mass spectrum of the $η$-neutron pairs. Position and width of the peak in the invariant mass spectrum are $W\approx 1665$ MeV and FWHM $Γ\approx 25$ MeV. The data are compared to the results of different models. △ Less

Stability Peninsulas on the Neutron Drip Line

Abstract: Using HF+BCS method with Skyrme forces we analyze the neutron drip line. It is shown that around magic and new magic numbers the drip line may form stability peninsulas. It is shown the location of these peninsulas does not depend on the choice of Skyrme forces. In agreement with model predictions, the total cross section for this channel is found to be very small, at most at the level of a few nb. Trnka et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2005) 192303 \cite{david}, claiming a lowering of the $ω$ mass in the nuclear medium by 14$%$ at normal nuclear matter density. The extracted $ω$ line shape was found to be sensitive to the background subtraction. For this reason a re-analysis of the same data set has been initiated and a new method has been developed to reduce the background and to determine the shape and absolute magnitude of the background directly from the data. Details of the re-analysis and of the background determination are described. The $ω$ signal on the $Nb$ target, extracted in the re-analysis, does not show a deviation from the corresponding line shape on a $LH_2$ target, measured as reference. The earlier claim of an in-medium mass shift is thus not confirmed. The sensitivity of the $ω$ line shape to different in-medium modification scenarios is discussed. △ Less

Measurement of the Beam Asymmetry $Σ$ in the Forward Direction for pi0 Photoproduction

Abstract: Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.92 and 1.68~GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The beam asymmetry~$Σ$ has been extracted for $115^\circ < θ_{\rm c.m.} < 155^\circ$ of the $π^0$~meson and for $θ_{\rm c.m.} < 60^\circ$. High-spin states in $^{22}$Ne

The experiment was performed at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined setup of the Crystal Barrel and TAPS calorimeters. It aimed at the in-medium properties of the S$_{11}$(1535) nucleon resonance and the study of the absorption properties of nuclear matter for $η$ mesons. Careful consideration was given to contributions from $ηπ$ final states and secondary production mechanisms of $η$-mesons e.g. from inelastic $πN$ reactions of intermediate pions. The analysis of the mass number scaling shows that the nuclear absorption cross section $σ_{Nη}$ for $η$ mesons is constant over a wide range of the $η$ momentum. The comparison of the excitation functions to data off the deuteron and to calculations in the framework of a BUU-model show no unexplained in-medium modifications of the S$_{11}$(1535). △ Less

Orientation and energy range of the linear polarisation can be deliberately chosen by accurate positioning of the crystal with a goniometer. The dependence of the $ω$ meson cross section on the nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models, a Glauber analysis, a BUU analysis of the Giessen theory group and a calculation by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic $ω$ width is found to be $130-150 \rm{MeV/c^2}$ at normal nuclear matter density for an average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the restframe of the $ω$ meson, this inelastic $ω$ width corresponds to a reduction of the $ω$ lifetime by a factor $\approx 30$. For the first time, the momentum dependent $ω$N cross section has been extracted from the experiment and is in the range of 70 mb. △ Less
