In unstressed La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$, the low-temperature tetragonal structure onsets below $T_{\text{LTT}} = 57$K, while the charge order and the spin order transition temperatures are $T_\text{CO} = 54$K and $T_\text{SO} = 37$K, respectively. We find that uniaxial stress along the [110] lattice direction strongly suppresses $T_\text{CO}$ and $T_{\text{SO}}$, but has little effect on $T_\text{LTT}$. In other words, under stress along [110] a large splitting ($\approx 21$K) opens between $T_\text{CO}$ and $T_{\text{LTT}}$, showing that these transitions are not tightly linked. On the other hand, stress along [100] causes a slight suppression of $T_\text{LTT}$ but has essentially no effect on $T_\text{CO}$ and $T_{\text{SO}}$. Magnetic field $H$ along [110] stabilizes the spin order: the suppression of $T_\text{SO}$ under stress along [110] is slower under $H \parallel [110]$ than $H \parallel [001]$. We develop a Landau free energy model and interpret our findings as an interplay of symmetry breaking terms driven by the orientation of spins.

We report $^{105}$Pd NMR and NQR measurements on a single crystal of Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$, where antiferroquadrupolar and antiferromagnetic orders develop at low temperature. From the analysis of NQR and NMR spectra, we have determined the electric field gradient (EFG) tensors and the anisotropic Knight shift ($K$) components for both inequivalent Pd sites - Pd($32f$) and Pd($48h$). The observed EFG values are in excellent agreement with our state-of-the-art DFT calculations. The principal values of the quadrupolar coupling are $(20.37 \pm 0.02)$ MHz and $(5.45 \pm 0.02)$ MHz, for the Pd($32f$) and Pd($48h$) site, respectively, which is large compared to the Larmor frequency defined by the gyromagnetic constant $γ= 1.94838$ MHz/T for $^{105}$Pd. Therefore, the complete knowledge of $K$ and the EFG tensors is crucial to establish the correspondence between NMR spectra and crystallographic sites, which is needed for a complete analysis of the magnetic structure, static spin susceptibility, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate data and a better understanding of the groundstate of Ce$_3$Pd$_{20}$Si$_6$.

Intermetallic compounds containing $f$-electron elements have been prototypical materials for investigating strong electron correlations and quantum criticality (QC). Their heavy fermion ground state evoked by the magnetic $f$-electrons is susceptible to the onset of quantum phases, such as magnetism or superconductivity, due to the enhanced effective mass ($m^{*}$) and a corresponding decrease of the Fermi temperature. However, the presence of $f$-electron valence fluctuations to a non-magnetic state is regarded an anathema to QC, as it usually generates a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid state with quasiparticles of moderate $m^{*}$. Such systems are typically isotropic, with a characteristic energy scale $T_0$ of the order of hundreds of kelvins that require large magnetic fields or pressures to promote a valence or magnetic instability. Here we show that the intermediate valence compound $α$-YbAlB$_4$ surprisingly exhibits both quantum critical behaviour and a Lifshitz transition under low magnetic field, which is attributed to the anisotropy of the hybridization between the conduction and localized $f$-electrons. These findings suggest a new route to bypass the large valence energy scale in develo** the QC.

An analytical solution of the Helmholtz equation for electromagnetic field distribution in a resonant cavity with elliptic cross-section is found. We compare the frequencies of the eigenmodes with numerical and experimental values for a metallic cavity and find an excellent matching. We focus our analysis on the microwave frequency region, and show how the ellipticity of the cavity (ratio of the minor and major axes length $b/a$) influences several mode frequencies and also the $Q$-factor of the cavity. By doing so, we demonstrate how the elliptic geometry splits the degeneracy of certain modes of the circular cylindric cavity.

We present an experimental investigation of the magnetic structure in a tetramer system SeCuO$_3$ using neutron diffraction and nuclear resonance techniques. We establish a non-collinear, commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering with a propagation vector $\textbf{k} = \left(0,0,1 \right)$. The order parameter follows a critical behavior near $T_N = 8$ K, with a critical exponent $β= 0.32$ in agreement with a 3D universality class. Evidence is presented that a singlet state starts to form on tetramers at temperatures as high as 200 K, and its signature is preserved within the ordered state through a strong renormalization of the ordered magnetic moment on two non-equivalent copper sites, $m_{Cu1} \approx 0.4 μ_B$ and $m_{Cu2} \approx 0.7 μ_B$ at 1.5 K.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of the high magnetic field (H) part of the Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) phase of the quasi-onedimensional (quasi-1D) antiferromagnetic quantum spin-chain compound NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 (DTN) was performed. We precisely determined the phase boundary, Tc(H), down to 40 mK; the critical boson density, n_c(Tc); and the absolute value of the BEC order parameter S_perp at very low temperature (T = 0.12 K). All results are accurately reproduced by numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a realistic three-dimensional (3D) model Hamiltonian. Approximate analytical predictions based on the 1D Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description are found to be precise for Tc(H), but less so for S_perp(H), which is more sensitive to the strength of 3D couplings, in particular close to the critical field. A mean-field treatment, based on the Hartree-Fock-Popov description, is found to be valid only up to n_c = 4% (T < 0.3 K), while for higher n_c boson interactions appear to modify the density of states.

Measurements at temperatures between 0.25 K and 20 K in magnetic fields up to 31 T served to establish the nature of the various phases. In BiCu2PO6, an incommensurate (IC) magnetic order develops above a critical field mu0*H(c1) ~ 21 T; the field and temperature dependences of the NMR lines and the resulting model for the spin structure are discussed. Supported by results of Density-Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations it is argued that the observed field-induced IC order involves the formation of a magnetic-soliton lattice. An additional QPT is predicted to occur at H > H(c1). For x = 0.01, this IC order is found to be stable against site disorder, although with a renormalized critical field.

We find that the ground state is characterized by a strong transverse staggered spin polarization whose temperature and field dependence points to a mixing of the singlet and triplet states. This is further corroborated by the field dependence of the gap $Δ(H)$, which has a level anticrossing with a large minimum gap value of $\approx Δ(0)/2$, with no evidence of a phase transition down to 1.5\,K. By the exact diagonalization of small clusters, we show that the observed anticrossing is mainly due to staggered tilts of the $g$-tensors defined by the crystal structure, and reveal symmetry properties of the low-energy excitation spectrum compatible with the absence of level crossing.

In both systems, spin excitations are confirmed to evolve from magnons in the gapped state to spinons in the gapples Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid state. In between, 1/T1 exhibits a pronounced, continuous variation, which is shown to scale in accordance with quantum criticality. We extract the critical exponent for 1/T1, compare it to the theory, and show that this behavior is identical in both studied systems, thus demonstrating the universality of quantum critical behavior.

Microwave absorption measurements in magnetic fields from zero up to 16 T were used to determine the temperature range of superconducting fluctuations above the superconducting critical temperature T_c in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}. Measurements were performed on deeply underdoped, slightly underdoped, and overdoped single crystals. The temperature range of the superconducting fluctuations above T_c is determined by an experimental method which is free from arbitrary assumptions about subtracting the nonsuperconducting contributions to the total measured signal, and/or theoretical models to extract the unknown parameters. The superconducting fluctuations are detected in the ab-plane, and c-axis conductivity, by identifying the onset temperature T'. Within the sensitivity of the method, this fluctuation regime is found only within a fairly narrow region above T_c. Its width increases from 7 K in the overdoped sample (T_c = 89 K), to at most 23 K in the deeply underdoped sample (T_c = 57 K), so that T' falls well below the pseudogap temperature T*. Implications of these findings are discussed in the context of other experimental probes of superconducting fluctuations in the cuprates.

The microwave response of high quality niobium films in a perpendicular static magnetic field has been investigated. The complex frequency shift was measured up to the upper critical fields. The data have been analyzed by the effective conductivity model for the type-II superconductors in the mixed state. This model is found to yield consistent results for the coherence lengths in high-kappa superconducting samples, and can be used with HTSC even at temperatures much below T_c. It is shown that for samples with high values of depinning frequency, one should measure both components of the complex frequency shift in order to determine the flow resistivity. The thick Nb film (160 nm) has low resistivity at 10 K, comparable to the best single crystals, and low kappa value. In contrast, the thinnest (10 nm) film has kappa ~ 9.5 and exhibits a high depinning frequency (~20 GHz). The upper critical field determined from microwave measurements is related to the radius of nonoverla** vortices, and appears to be larger than the one determined by the transition to the normal state.
