Abstract:
We compute the flux of relic neutrino background (R$ν$B) up-scattered by ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic rays (CRs) in clusters that act as CR-reservoirs. The long trap** times of UHECRs make this flux larger than that of R$ν$B up-scattered by UHECRs on their way to Earth, which we also compute. We find that IceCube excludes R$ν$B weighted overdensities larger than $10^{10}$ in clusters, and that PUEO, RNO-G, GRAND and IceCube-Gen2 will test values down to $10^{8}$. Our treatment incorporates the momentum transfer dependence of the neutrino-nucleus cross section, deep inelastic scattering, a mixed UHECR composition, and flavour information on the up-scattered R$ν$B fluxes for both cases of neutrino mass spectrum with normal and inverted ordering, providing new handles to possibly disentangle the up-scattered R$ν$B from cosmogenic neutrinos.

We find that viable leptogenesis can be due solely to CP-violating values of $δ$ and that the $N_{1,\,2}$ total mixing squared $Θ^2=\sum_αΘ^2_α$ needed is within the reach of future experiments, $Θ_α$ parameterising the coupling to the charged lepton $α=e,\,μ,\,τ$. Furthermore, the required parameter space differs from that associated with additional Casas-Ibarra sources of CP-violation. Future determination of $δ$, $Θ^2$ and/or the ratios $Θ_τ^2:Θ^2_μ:Θ^2_e$ would provide a critical test of the considered scenario.

We discuss the thermal leptogenesis mechanism within the minimal gauged U(1)$_{L_μ-L_τ}$ model to explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU). In such framework, the phases of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata neutrino mixing matrix and the sum of the Standard Model neutrino masses are predictable because of a restricted neutrino mass matrix structure. Additionally, in the context of thermal leptogenesis, the BAU can be computed in terms of the three remaining free variables that parameterise the right-handed neutrino masses and their Yukawa couplings to the Higgs and lepton doublets. We identify the ranges of such parameters for which the correct BAU can be reproduced. We adopt the formalism of the density matrix equations to fully account for flavour effects and consider the decays of all the three right-handed neutrinos. Our analysis reveals that thermal leptogenesis is feasible within a wide parameter space, specifically for Yukawa couplings ranging from approximate unity to $\mathcal{O}(0.03-0.05)$ and mass of the lightest right-handed neutrino $M_1\gtrsim 10^{11-12}\,\text{GeV}$, setting a leptogenesis scale in the considered model which is higher than that of the non-thermal scenario.

Particle physics today faces the challenge of explaining the mystery of dark matter, the origin of matter over anti-matter in the Universe, the origin of the neutrino masses, the apparent fine-tuning of the electro-weak scale, and many other aspects of fundamental physics. Perhaps the most striking frontier to emerge in the search for answers involves new physics at mass scales comparable to familiar matter, below the GeV-scale, or even radically below, down to sub-eV scales, and with very feeble interaction strength. New theoretical ideas to address dark matter and other fundamental questions predict such feebly interacting particles (FIPs) at these scales, and indeed, existing data provide numerous hints for such possibility. A vibrant experimental program to discover such physics is under way, guided by a systematic theoretical approach firmly grounded on the underlying principles of the Standard Model. This document represents the report of the FIPs 2022 workshop, held at CERN between the 17 and 21 October 2022 and aims to give an overview of these efforts, their motivations, and the decadal goals that animate the community involved in the search for FIPs.

We derive the constraints on the corresponding leptogenesis parameter space from the existing data from low-energy experiments, including the limits from the experiments on $μ\rightarrow e γ$ decay and on the rate of $μ- e$ conversion in gold. We show also that the planned and upcoming experiments on charged lepton flavour violation with $μ^\pm$, MEG II on the $μ\rightarrow eγ$ decay, Mu3e on $μ\rightarrow eee$ decay, Mu2e and COMET on $μ- e$ conversion in aluminium and PRISM/PRIME on $μ- e$ conversion in titanium, can probe significant region of the viable leptogenesis parameter space, and thus have a potential for a discovery. Experiments on $τ\to eee(μμμ)$ and $τ\to e(μ)γ$ decays (e.g., BELLE II) also can probe a part of the leptogenesis parameter space, although a relatively small one.

In this work, focusing on the blazars TXS 0506+056 and BL Lacertae, we derive novel limits on the cross section of the elastic scattering between dark matter and electrons by means of the available Super-Kamiokande data. Thanks to the large blazar-boosted dark matter flux, the limit on the dark matter-electron scattering cross section for dark matter masses below 100 MeV can be as low as $\sim10^{-38}~\text{cm}^2$, which is orders of magnitude stronger than the analogous results from galactic cosmic rays.

We explore the possibility that relativistic protons in the extremely powerful jets of blazars may boost via elastic collisions the dark matter particles in the surroundings of the source to high energies. We concentrate on two sample blazars, TXS 0506+056 - towards which IceCube recently reported evidence for a high-energy neutrino flux - and BL Lacertae, a representative nearby blazar. We find that the dark matter flux at Earth induced by these sources may be sizable, larger than the flux associated with the analogous process of dark matter boosted by galactic cosmic rays, and relevant to access direct detection for dark matter particle masses lighter than 1 GeV. From the null detection of a signal by XENON1T, MiniBooNE, and Borexino, we derive limits on dark matter-nucleus spin-independent and spin-dependent cross sections which, depending on the modelization of the source, improve on other currently available bounds for light dark matter candidates of 1 up to 5 orders of magnitude.

Using the density matrix equations (DME) for high scale leptogenesis based on the type I seesaw mechanism, in which the CP violation (CPV) is provided by the low-energy Dirac or/and Majorana phases of the neutrino mixing (PMNS) matrix, we investigate the 1-to-2 and the 2-to-3 flavour regime transitions, where the 1, 2 and 3 leptogenesis flavour regimes in the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe $η_B$ are described by the Boltzmann equations. Concentrating on the 1-to-2 flavour transition we determine the general conditions under which $η_B$ goes through zero and changes sign in the transition. Analysing in detail the behaviour of $η_B$ in the transition in the case of two heavy Majorana neutrinos $N_{1,2}$ with hierarchical masses, $M_1 \ll M_2$, we find, in particular, that i) the Boltzmann equations in many cases fail to describe correctly the generation of $η_B$ in the 1, 2 and 3 flavour regimes, ii) the 2-flavour regime can persist above (below) $\sim 10^{12}$ GeV ($\sim 10^9$ GeV), iii) the flavour effects in leptogenesis persist beyond the typically considered maximal for these effects leptogenesis scale of $10^{12}$ GeV. We further determine the minimal scale $M_{1\text{min}}$ at which we can have successful leptogenesis when the CPV is provided only by the Dirac or Majorana phases of the PMNS matrix as well as the ranges of scales and values of the phases for having successful leptogenesis. We show, in particular, that when the CPV is due to the Dirac phase $δ$, there is a direct relation between the sign of $\sin δ$ and the sign of $η_B$ in the regions of viable leptogenesis in the case of normal hierarchical light neutrino mass spectrum; for the inverted hierarchical spectrum the same result holds for $M_1 \lesssim 10^{13}$ GeV. The considered scenarios of leptogenesis are testable and falsifiable in low-energy neutrino experiments.

The case when the CP violating asymmetries in the individual lepton charges $L_l$, $l=e,μ,τ$, and in the total lepton charge $L$ of the Universe are generated in $1 \leftrightarrow 2$ decay processes is investigated. We show that successful leptogenesis is possible for $M_{1,2}$ lying in the interval $M_{1,2} = (0.3 - 100)$ GeV. Our results show also, in particular, that for vanishing initial $N_{1,2}$ abundance, flavour effects can play an important role in the generation of the baryon asymmetry, leading to an enhancement of the asymmetry by a factor up to $\sim 300$ with respect to the "unflavoured" leptogenesis scenario.
