Abstract:
Sliding motion between two rough solids under light normal loading involves myriad micro-impacts between antagonist micro-asperities. Those micro-impacts are at the origin of many emerging macroscopic phenomena, including the friction force, the slider's vibrations and the noise radiated in the surroundings. However, the individual properties of the micro-impacts (e.g. maximum force, position alon…

Sliding motion between two rough solids under light normal loading involves myriad micro-impacts between antagonist micro-asperities. Those micro-impacts are at the origin of many emerging macroscopic phenomena, including the friction force, the slider's vibrations and the noise radiated in the surroundings. However, the individual properties of the micro-impacts (e.g. maximum force, position along the interface, duration) are essentially elusive to measurement. Here, we introduce an instrumented slider aimed at measuring the position and the normal component of the micro-impact forces during sliding against a rough track. It is based on an array of piezoelectric sensors, each placed under a single model asperity. Its dynamical characteristics are established experimentally and compared to a finite elements model. We then validate its measurement capabilities by using it against a track bearing simple, well-defined topographical features. The measurements are interpreted thanks to a simple multi-asperity contact model. Our slider is expected to be useful in future studies to provide local insights into a variety of tribological questions involving dry rough sliding interfaces.

Abstract:
Let C be a smooth projective complex curve of genus at least 2. For a simply-connected complex Lie group G the vector space of global sections H^0(M(G), L^l) of the l-th power of the ample generator L of the Picard group of the moduli stack of principal G-bundles over C is commonly called the space of generalized G-theta functions or Verlinde space of level l. In the case G = G_2, the exceptional…

For a simply-connected complex Lie group G the vector space of global sections H^0(M(G), L^l) of the l-th power of the ample generator L of the Picard group of the moduli stack of principal G-bundles over C is commonly called the space of generalized G-theta functions or Verlinde space of level l. In the case G = G_2, the exceptional Lie group of automorphisms of the complex Cayley algebra, we study natural linear maps between the Verlinde space H^0(M(G_2), L) of level one and some Verlinde spaces for SL_2 and SL_3. We deduce that the image of the monodromy representation of the WZW-connection for G = G_2 and l=1 is infinite.

For a complex Lie group G, let H^0(M(G),L^k) be the space of generalized G-theta functions over C of level k, where M(G) denotes the moduli stack of principal G-bundles over C and L the ample line bundle that generates the Picard group Pic(M(G)).
Using the map obtained from extension of structure groups, we prove that the space H^0(M(G_2),L) of generalized G-2-theta functions over C of level one and the invariant space of H^0(M(SL_2), L) \otimes H^0(M(SL_2), L^3) under the action of 2-torsion elements of the Jacobian JC[2] are isomorphic. We also prove explicit links between H^0(M(G_2),L) and the space of generalized SL_3-theta functions of level one.
