Tomographic reconstruction of quantum states plays a fundamental role in benchmarking quantum systems and retrieving information from quantum computers. Among the informationally complete sets of quantum measurements the tight ones provide a linear reconstruction formula and minimize the propagation of statistical errors. However, implementing tight measurements in the lab is challenging due to the high number of required measurement projections, involving a series of experimental setup preparations. In this work, we introduce the notion of cyclic tight measurements, that allow us to perform full quantum state tomography while considering only repeated application of a single unitary-based quantum device during the measurement stage process. This type of measurements significantly simplifies the complexity of the experimental setup required to retrieve the quantum state of a physical system. Additionally, we design feasible setup preparation procedure that produce well-approximated cyclic tight measurements, in every finite dimension.

The quantum marginal problem consists in deciding whether a given set of marginal reductions is compatible with the existence of a global quantum state or not. In this work, we formulate the problem from the perspective of dynamical systems theory and study its advantages with respect to the standard approach. The introduced formalism allows us to analytically determine global quantum states from a wide class of self-consistent marginal reductions in any multipartite scenario. In particular, we show that any self-consistent set of multipartite marginal reductions is compatible with the existence of a global quantum state, after passing through a depolarizing channel. This result reveals that the complexity associated to the marginal problem can be drastically reduced when restricting the attention to sufficiently mixed marginals. We also formulate the marginal problem in a compressed way, in the sense that the total number of scalar constraints is smaller than the one required by the standard approach. This fact suggests an exponential speedup in runtime when considering semi-definite programming techniques to solve it, in both classical and quantum algorithms. Finally, we reconstruct $n$-qubit quantum states from all the $\binom{n}{k}$ marginal reductions to $k$ parties, generated from randomly chosen mixed states. Numerical simulations reveal that the fraction of cases where we can find a global state equals 1 when $5\leq n\leq12$ and $\lfloor(n-1)/\sqrt{2}\rfloor\leq k\leq n-1$, where $\lfloor\cdot\rfloor$ denotes the floor function.

In this work, the concept of mutually unbiased frames is introduced as the most general notion of unbiasedness for sets composed by linearly independent and normalized vectors. It encompasses the already existing notions of unbiasedness for orthonormal bases, regular simplices, equiangular tight frames, positive operator valued measure, and also includes symmetric informationally complete quantum measurements. After introducing the tool, its power is shown by finding the following results about the last mentioned class of constellations: (i) real fiducial states do not exist in any even dimension, and (ii) unknown $d$-dimensional fiducial states are parameterized, a priori, with roughly $3d/2$ real variables only, without loss of generality. Furthermore, multi-parametric families of pure quantum states having minimum uncertainty with regard to several choices of $d+1$ orthonormal bases are shown, in every dimension $d$. These last families contain all existing fiducial states in every finite dimension, and the bases include maximal sets of $d+1$ mutually unbiased bases, when $d$ is a prime number.

Certification of quantum nonlocality plays a central role in practical applications like device-independent quantum cryptography and random number generation protocols. These applications entail the challenging problem of certifying quantum nonlocality, something that is hard to achieve when the target quantum state is weakly entangled, or when the source of errors is high, e.g. when photons propagate through the atmosphere or a long optical fiber. Here, we introduce a technique to find a Bell inequality with the largest possible gap between the quantum prediction and the classical local hidden variable limit for a given set of measurement frequencies. Our method represents an efficient strategy to certify quantum nonlocal correlations from experimental data without requiring extra measurements, in the sense that there is no Bell inequality with a larger gap than the one provided. Furthermore, we also reduce the photodetector efficiency required to close the detection loophole. We illustrate our technique by improving the detection of quantum nonlocality from experimental data obtained with weakly entangled photons.

The problem of computing the local hidden variable (LHV) value of a Bell inequality plays a central role in the study of quantum nonlocality. In particular, this problem is the first step towards characterizing the LHV polytope of a given scenario. In this work, we establish a relation between the LHV value of bipartite Bell inequalities and the mathematical notion of excess of a matrix. Inspired by the well developed theory of excess, we derive several results that directly impact the field of quantum nonlocality. We show infinite families of bipartite Bell inequalities for which the LHV value can be computed exactly, without needing to solve any optimization problem, for any number of measurement settings. We also find tight Bell inequalities for a large number of measurement settings.

We present an iterative method to solve the multipartite quantum state estimation problem. We demonstrate convergence for any informationally complete set of generalized quantum measurements in every finite dimension. Our method exhibits fast convergence in high dimension and strong robustness under the presence of realistic errors both in state preparation and measurement stages. In particular, for mutually unbiased bases and tensor product of generalized Pauli observables it converges in a single iteration. It is known that a real symmetric circulant matrix with diagonal entries $d\geq0$, off-diagonal entries $\pm1$ and orthogonal rows exists only of order $2d+2$ (and trivially of order $1$) [Turek and Goyeneche 2019]. In this paper we consider a complex Hermitian analogy of those matrices. That is, we study the existence and construction of Hermitian circulant matrices having orthogonal rows, diagonal entries $d\geq0$ and any complex entries of absolute value $1$ off the diagonal. As a particular case, we consider matrices whose off-diagonal entries are 4th roots of unity; we prove that the order of any such matrix with $d$ different from an odd integer is $n=2d+2$. We also discuss a similar problem for symmetric circulant matrices defined over finite rings $\mathbb{Z}_m$. As an application of our results, we show a close connection to mutually unbiased bases, an important open problem in quantum information theory.

Discrete structures in Hilbert space play a crucial role in finding optimal schemes for quantum measurements. We solve the problem whether a complete set of five iso-entangled mutually unbiased bases exists in dimension four, providing an explicit analytical construction. The reduced density matrices of these $20$ pure states forming this generalized quantum measurement form a regular dodecahedron inscribed in a sphere of radius $\sqrt{3/20}$ located inside the Bloch ball of radius $1/2$. Such a set forms a mixed-state $2$-design --- a discrete set of quantum states with the property that the mean value of any quadratic function of density matrices is equal to the integral over the entire set of mixed states with respect to the flat Hilbert-Schmidt measure. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions mixed-state designs need to satisfy and present general methods to construct them. Furthermore, it is shown that partial traces of a projective design in a composite Hilbert space form a mixed-state design, while decoherence of elements of a projective design yields a design in the classical probability simplex. We identify a distinguished two-qubit orthogonal basis such that four reduced states are evenly distributed inside the Bloch ball and form a mixed-state $2$-design.

We also show that a WH (Weyl Heisenberg covariant) SIC in odd dimension d is naturally associated to a pair of symmetric tight fusion frames in dimension d. We deduce two relaxations of the WH SIC existence problem. We also find a reformulation of the problem in which the number of equations is fewer than the number of variables. Finally, we show that in at least four cases the structures associated to a SIC lie on continuous manifolds of such structures. In two of these cases the manifolds are non-linear. Restricted defect calculations are consistent with this being true for the structures associated to every known SIC with d between 3 and 16, suggesting it may be true for all d greater than 2.

We demonstrate that tight measurements cannot be exclusively composed neither of fully separable nor maximally entangled states. We establish an upper bound on the maximal number of fully separable states allowed by tight measurements and investigate the distinguished case, in which every measurement operator carries the same amount of entanglement. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of nested tight measurements, i.e. multipartite tight informationally complete measurements such that every reduction to a certain number of parties induces a lower dimensional tight measurement, proving that they exist for any number of parties and internal levels.

A crucial task for secure communication networks is to determine the minimum of physical requirements to certify a cryptographic protocol. A widely accepted candidate for certification is the principle of relativistic causality which is equivalent to the disallowance of causal loops. Contrary to expectations, we demonstrate how correlations allowed by relativistic causality could be exploited to break security for a broad class of multi-party protocols (all modern protocols belong to this class). As we show, deep roots of this dramatic lack of security lies in the fact that unlike in previous (quantum or no-signaling) scenarios the new theory "decouples" the property of extremality and that of statistical independence on environment variables. Finally, we find out, that the lack of security is accompanied by some advantage: the new correlations can reduce communication complexity better than the no-signaling ones. As a tool for analysis of this advantage, we characterize relativistic causal polytope by its extremal points in the simplest multi-party scenario that goes beyond the no-signaling paradigm.

A further introduced notion, quantum orthogonal arrays, generalizes all previous classes of designs. We show that mutually orthogonal quantum Latin arrangements can be entangled in the same way than quantum states are entangled. We derive infinitely many classes of mutually orthogonal quantum Latin arrangements and quantum orthogonal arrays having an arbitrary large number of columns. The latter approach is particularly useful when considering outcomes as eigenvalues of unitary operators. This brings the possibility of exploiting the complex structure of the coefficients in the Bell operators. A physical theory is called non-local when observers can produce instantaneous effects over distant systems. Non-local theories rely on two fundamental effects: local uncertainty relations and steering of physical states at a distance. In quantum mechanics, the former one dominates the other in a well-known class of non-local games known as XOR games. In particular, optimal quantum strategies for XOR games are completely determined by the uncertainty principle alone. This breakthrough result has yielded the fundamental open question whether optimal quantum strategies are always restricted by local uncertainty principles, with entanglement-based steering playing no role. In this work, we provide a negative answer to the question, showing that both steering and uncertainty relations play a fundamental role in determining optimal quantum strategies for non-local games. Our theoretical findings are supported by an experimental implementation with entangled photons.

In this work we demonstrate that any pure d-dimensional state is unambiguously reconstructed by measuring 5 observables, that is, via projective measurements onto the states of 5 orthonormal bases. Thus, in our method the total number of different measurement outcomes (5d) scales linearly with d. The state reconstruction is robust against experimental errors and requires simple post-processing, regardless of d. We experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of our scheme through the reconstruction of 8-dimensional quantum states, encoded in the momentum of single photons.

These states form a natural generalization of N-qudits GHZ states which belong to the class 1-uniform states. A pure quantum state of N subsystems with d levels each is called k-multipartite maximally entangled state, written k-uniform, if all its reductions to k qudits are maximally mixed. These states form a natural generalization of N-qudits GHZ states which belong to the class 1-uniform states. We establish a link between the combinatorial notion of orthogonal arrays and k-uniform states and prove the existence of several new classes of such states for N-qudit systems. In particular, known Hadamard matrices allow us to explicitly construct 2-uniform states for an arbitrary number of N>5 qubits. We show that finding a different class of 2-uniform states would imply the Hadamard conjecture, so the full classification of 2-uniform states seems to be currently out of reach. Additionally, single vectors of another class of 2-uniform states are one-to-one related to maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases. Furthermore, we establish links between existence of k-uniform states, classical and quantum error correction codes and provide a novel graph representation for such states.

A powerful tool for studying geometrical problems in Hilbert space is developed. In particular, we study the quantum pure state tomography problem in finite dimensions from the point of view of dynamical systems and bifurcations theory. First, we introduce a generalization of the Hellinger metric for probability distributions which allows us to find a geometrical interpretation of the quantum state tomography problem. Thereafter, we prove that every solution to the state tomography problem is an attractive fixed point of the so-called physical imposition operator. Additionally, we demonstrate that multiple states corresponding to the same experimental data are associated to bifurcations of this operator. Such a kind of bifurcations only occurs when informationally incomplete set of observables are considered. Finally, we prove that the physical imposition operator has a non-contractive Lipschitz constant 2 for the Bures metric. This value of the Lipschitz constant manifests the existence of the quantum tomography problem for pure states.

Abstract:
In this work we present some new properties of fiducial states in prime dimensions. We parameterize fiducial operators on eigenvectors bases of displacement operators, which allows us to find a manifold $Ω$ of hermitian operators satisfying $\mathrm{Tr}(ρ)=\mathrm{Tr}(ρ^2)=1$ for any $ρ$ in $Ω$. This manifold contains the complete set of fiducial pure states in every prime dimension. Indeed, any q…

This manifold contains the complete set of fiducial pure states in every prime dimension. Indeed, any quantum state $ρ\geq0$ belonging to $Ω$ is a fiducial pure state. Also, we present an upper bound for every probability associated to mutually unbiased decomposition of fiducial states. This bound allows us to prove that every fiducial state tends to be mutually unbiased to the maximal set of mutually unbiased bases in higher prime dimensions. Finally, we show that any $ρ$ in $Ω$ minimizes an entropic uncertainty principle related to the second order Rényi entropy.

This approach is based on an efficient numerical method designed to find solutions to the quantum state reconstruction problem in finite dimensions. Our technique suggests the existence of previously unknown symmetries in Karlsson's non-affine family $K_6^{(2)}$ which we confirm analytically. Also, we obtain strong evidence that no more than three mutually unbiased bases can be constructed from pairs which contain members of some non-affine families of complex Hadamard matrices.

When an informationally incomplete set of observables is considered there are several solutions to the quantum state reconstruction problem using von Neumann measurements. The set of solutions are known as Pauli partners, which are not easy to find even numerically. We present, in a self-contained paper, a new way to find this solutions using the physical imposition operator. We show that every Pauli partner is an attractive fixed point of this operator, which means that we can find complete sets of Pauli partners very efficiently. As a particular case, we found numerically 24 mutually unbiased bases in dimension N=23 in less than 30 seconds in a standard PC. We hope that the algorithm presented can be adapted to construct MU Constellations, SIC-POVMs, Equiangular Tight Frames and Quantum t-Designs, which could open new possibilities to find numerical solutions to these open problems related with quantum information theory.

An iterative algorithm for state determination is presented that uses as physical input the probability distributions for the eigenvalues of two or more observables in an unknown state $Φ$. Starting form an arbitrary state $Ψ_{0}$, a succession of states $Ψ_{n}$ is obtained that converges to $Φ$ or to a Pauli partner. This algorithm for state reconstruction is efficient and robust as is seen in the numerical tests presented and is a useful tool not only for state determination but also for the study of Pauli partners. Its main ingredient is the Physical Imposition Operator that changes any state to have the same physical properties, with respect to an observable, of another state.

Abstract:
The quantum diffusion of a particle in an initially localized state on a cyclic lattice with N sites is studied. Diffusion and reconstruction time are calculated. Strong differences are found for even or odd number of sites and the limit N->infinit is studied. The predictions of the model could be tested with micro - and nanotechnology devices.
