This paper is an extension of our earlier work where we had reported a proof of concept for a ferrofluid based damper. The damper used ferrofluid as dam** medium and it was seen that dam** efficiency of the damper changes on application of magnetic field. The present paper deals with a systematic study of the effect of magnetic field on the dam** efficiency of the damper. Results of these studies are reported. It is seen that dam** ratio varies linearly with magnetic field (ζ / H = 0.028 per kG) for magnetic field in range of 0.0 to 4.5 kG. It may be mentioned that ferrofluid is different from magnetorheological fluid even though both of them are magnetic field-responsive fluids. The ferrofluid-dampers are better suited than MR Fluid-dampers for their use in automobiles.

Polymeric membranes, including Polysulfone (PSf) membranes, are routinely used for water treatment. To enhance water permeation of above membranes, it is common to synthesize polymeric membranes with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in them. It is seen that water permeability of membranes having vertically aligned CNTs is higher, as compared to those where CNTs are not aligned. It is of interest to examine if the dielectric constant of a CNT based nanocomposite membrane is sensitive to alignment of CNTs or not. This paper reports dielectric properties of PSf-MWCNT membranes, both, for aligned and unaligned MWCNTs. Multi Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) based polysulfone membranes were synthesized using standard methods. MWCNTs in above membranes were aligned by casting the membrane in presence of magnetic field. The present paper, for the first time, shows that the above result is valid for membranes also.

Polymeric membranes, including Polysulfone (PSf) membranes, are routinely used for water treatment. It is known for quite some time that water permeability of above membranes can be improved if one incorporates carbon nanotubes (single-walled, SWCNTs or multi-walled, MWCNTs) in to the membrane and aligns them in direction of flow of water. This paper reports a method of synthesizing polymeric membranes having vertically aligned hollow CNTs embedded in them. This involves mixing of nanomagnetic particles in the dope solution and casting of membrane in presence of moderate magnetic fields.
A semi-automatic membrane casting machine which allows casting of membrane in presence magnetic field was designed and fabricated. PSf nanocomposite membranes, having vertically aligned MWCNTSs, were synthesized using above machine. The effect of magnetic field and the exposure time on the water permeation of above membranes was studied. It was seen that water permeability of membrane increases by a factor of 4 when the magnetic field is increased from 0 to 1500 Gauss. There was additional 40% increase in water permeability, when the time for which film was exposed to magnetic field was increased from 5 sec. to 10 sec.

Abstract:
Specific heat of dipolar glasses does not obey Debye law. It is of interest to know if the non-Debye specific heat can be accounted for in terms of Schottky-type specific heat arising from rotational tunneling states of the dipoles. Specific heat of dipolar glasses does not obey Debye law. It is of interest to know if the non-Debye specific heat can be accounted for in terms of Schottky-type specific heat arising from rotational tunneling states of the dipoles. This paper deals with rotational tunneling spectra of NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions and the non-Debye specific heat of mixed salts (e.g. (NH$_{4})_{x}$Rb$_{1-x}$Br) of ammonium and alkali halides which are known to exhibit dipolar glass phase. We have measured specific heat of above mixed salts at low temperatures (1.5 K $< T <$ 15 K). It is seen that while the specific heat of pure salts obeys Debye law, the specific heat of mixed salts does not obey Debye law. We have studied the effect of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ion concentration, first neighbor environment of NH$_{4}^{+}$ ion and the lattice strain field on the non-Debye specific heat by carrying out measurements on suitably chosen mixed salts. Independent of above, we have measured the rotational tunneling spectra, $f(ω$), of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions in above salts using technique of neutron incoherent inelastic scattering. The above studies show that both the non-Debye specific heat and the tunneling spectra of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions depend on the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ion concentration, first neighbor environment of NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions and the lattice strain field. We have further shown that the temperature dependence of the measured specific heat can be explained for all the samples in terms of a model that takes account of contributions to the specific heat from the Debye phonons and the rotational tunneling states of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions. To the best of our knowledge, this is a first study where it is shown that measured specific heat of (NH$_{4})_{x}$Rb$_{1-x}$Br can be quantitatively explained in terms of an experimentally measured rotational tunneling spectra $f(ω$) of the NH$_{4}^{+}$ ions.
