Periodic Magnetic Geodesics on Heisenberg Manifolds
Abstract: We study the dynamics of magnetic flows on Heisenberg groups. Let $H$ denote the three-dimensional simply connected Heisenberg Lie group endowed with a left-invariant Riemannian metric and an exact, left-invariant magnetic field. Let $Γ$ be a lattice subgroup of $H,$ so that $Γ\backslash H$ is a closed nilmanifold. We first find an explicit description of magnetic geodesics on $H$, then determine… ▽ More

Lens spaces isospectral on forms but not on functions
Abstract: This paper means to correct an error by the authors for the composite $q$ case in the paper "Lens Spaces, Isospectral on Forms but not on Functions", published in LMS J. Comput. Math.} 9 (2006), 270-286. All calculations and examples presented in \cite{GM} for prime $q$ remain valid, and we include detailed calculations below justifying this. Our original mistake was to conclude that Formula (3.11… ▽ More

The eta invariant on two-step nilmanifolds
Abstract: The eta invariant appears regularly in index theorems but is known to be directly computable from the spectrum only in certain examples of locally symmetric spaces of compact type. In this work, we derive some general formulas useful for calculating the eta invariant on closed manifolds. Specifically, we study the eta invariant on nilmanifolds by decomposing the spin Dirac operator using Kirillov… ▽ More

Isospectral surfaces with distinct covering spectra via Cayley Graphs
Abstract: The covering spectrum is a geometric invariant of a Riemannian manifold, more generally of a metric space, that measures the size of its one-dimensional holes by isolating a portion of the length spectrum. In a previous paper we demonstrated that the covering spectrum is not a spectral invariant of a manifold in dimensions three and higher. In this article we give an example of two isospectral Cay… ▽ More

Sunada's method and the covering spectrum
Abstract: In 2004, Sormani and Wei introduced the covering spectrum: a geometric invariant that isolates part of the length spectrum of a Riemannian manifold. In their paper they observed that certain Sunada isospectral manifolds share the same covering spectrum, thus raising the question of whether the covering spectrum is a spectral invariant. In the present paper we describe a group theoretic condition u… ▽ More

Isoscattering Schottky Manifolds
Abstract: The authors exhibit pairs of infinite-volume, hyperbolic three-manifolds that have the same scattering poles and conformally equivalent boundaries, but which are not isometric. The examples are constructed using Schottky groups and the Sunada construction.

Isospectral deformations of closed Riemannian manifolds with different scalar curvature
Abstract: We construct the first examples of continuous families of isospectral Riemannian metrics that are not locally isometric on closed manifolds, more precisely, on $S^n\times T^m$, where $T^m$ is a torus of dimension $m\ge 2$ and $S^n$ is a sphere of dimension $n\ge 4$. These metrics are not locally homogeneous; in particular, the scalar curvature of each metric is nonconstant. For some of the defor… ▽ More

Continuous Families of Riemannian manifolds, isospectral on functions but not on 1-forms
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present the first continuous families of Riemannian manifolds isospectral on functions but not on 1-forms, and simultaneously, the first continuous families of Riemannian manifolds with the same marked length spectrum but not the same 1-form spectrum. The examples presented here are Riemannian three-step nilmanifolds and thus provide a counterexample to the Ouyang… ▽ More

The Marked Length Spectrum Versus the Laplace Spectrum on Forms on Riemannian Nilmanifolds
Abstract: The subject of this paper is the relationship among the marked length spectrum, the length spectrum, the Laplace spectrum on functions, and the Laplace spectrum on forms on Riemannian nilmanifolds. In particular, we show that for a large class of three-step nilmanifolds, if a pair of nilmanifolds in this class has the same marked length spectrum, they necessarily share the same Laplace spectrum… ▽ More

A New Construction of Isospectral Riemannian Nilmanifolds with Examples
Abstract: We present a new construction for obtaining pairs of higher-step isospectral Riemannian nilmanifolds and compare several resulting new examples. In particular, we present new examples of manifolds that are isospectral on functions, but not isospectral on one-forms.
