Recent advances in van der Waals (vdW) materials have sparked renewed interest in the impact of dimensionality on magnetic phase transitions. While ordered magnetic phases have been demonstrated to survive in the two-dimensional (2D) limit, the quest for a spin-glass with quenched magnetic disorder in lower dimensions has proven elusive. Here we show evidence of a spin-glass emerging from randomly distributed Fe atoms in Fe3GeTe2, the first time such a state has been reported in a vdW material. AC magnetic susceptibility displays a strong frequency dependence indicative of slow spin dynamics. Additional distinctive phenomena, including ageing, chaos, and memory effects, further substantiate the existence of a glassy state. Remarkably, we find that this state persists even in single-unit-cell thick Fe3GeTe2, thereby confirming the existence of a 2D spin-glass. The formation of spin-glass states via intercalation in vdW systems allows for highly tunable spin-glass states that are otherwise difficult to realize.

In the presence of an external magnetic field Cooper pairs in noncentrosymmetric superconductors can acquire finite momentum. Recent theory predicts that such finite-momentum pairing can lead to an asymmetric critical current, where a dissipationless supercurrent can flow along one direction but not the opposite. However, to date this has not been observed. Here we report the discovery of a giant Josephson diode effect (JDE) in Josephson junctions formed from a type II Dirac semimetal, NiTe2. A distinguishing feature is that the asymmetry in the critical current depends sensitively on the magnitude and direction of an applied magnetic field and achieves its maximum value of ~60% when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the current and is of the order of just 10 mT. Moreover the asymmetry changes sign several times with increasing field. These characteristic features are accounted for in a theoretical model based on finite-momentum Cooper pairing derived from spin-helical topological surface states, in an otherwise centrosymmetric system. The finite pairing momentum is further established, and its value determined, from the evolution of the interference pattern under an in-plane magnetic field. The observed giant magnitude of the asymmetry in critical current and the clear exposition of its underlying mechanism paves the way to building novel superconducting computing devices using the Josephson diode effect.

The People's Speech is a free-to-download 30,000-hour and growing supervised conversational English speech recognition dataset licensed for academic and commercial usage under CC-BY-SA (with a CC-BY subset). The data is collected via searching the Internet for appropriately licensed audio data with existing transcriptions. We describe our data collection methodology and release our data collection system under the Apache 2.0 license. We show that a model trained on this dataset achieves a 9.98% word error rate on Librispeech's test-clean test set.Finally, we discuss the legal and ethical issues surrounding the creation of a sizable machine learning corpora and plans for continued maintenance of the project under MLCommons's sponsorship.

There is much to learn through synthesis of Developmental Biology, Cognitive Science and Computational Modeling. Our path forward is to present a design for developmentally-inspired learning agents based on Braitenberg Vehicles. Using these agents to exemplify the embodied nature of computational autonomy, we move closer to modeling embodied experience and morphogenetic growth as components of cognitive developmental capacity. We consider biological and cognitive development which influence the generation of adult phenotypes and the contingency of available developmental pathways. Continual developmental neurosimulation allows us to consider the role of developmental trajectories in bridging the related phenomena of nervous system morphogenesis, developmental learning, and plasticity. Being closely tied to continual learning, our approach is tightly integrated with developmental embodiment, and can be implemented using a type of agent called developmental Braitenberg Vehicles (dBVs). This phenotype is characterized in terms of developmental timing: with distinct morphogenetic, critical, and acquisition (developmental learning) periods. These properties produce emergent connectivity with shifting weights and adaptive network topologies in the context of developmental processes and spatially-dependent embodiment in training neural networks. We further propose that network morphogenesis can be accomplished using a genetic algorithmic approach, while developmental learning can be implemented using a number of computational methodologies. This approach provides a blueprint for adaptive agent behavior that might result from a developmental approach. In conclusion, we will consider agent learning and development at different timescales. The development, evolution, and learning in an embodied agent-based approach is key to an integrative view of biologically-inspired intelligence.
