The symmetric orbifold of $\mathbb{T}^4$ is exactly dual to string theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ with minimal ($k=1$) NS-NS flux. In this paper we study the perturbation of the symmetric orbifold that is dual to switching on R-R flux, and hence to deforming the theory away from the tensionless point. More specifically, we determine systematically the action of a centrally extended supersymmetry algebra on the CFT states, and deduce from it the anomalous conformal dimensions. In the $w$-twisted sector with large $w$ the structure is similar to what was found for $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM: the basic excitations are multi-magnons whose individual dispersion relation is fixed by symmetry, and the comparison with the BMN answer suggests that the result is true to all orders in perturbation theory. Finally we show that the multi-magnon states interact via an integrable $S$-matrix and possess a natural family of bound states.

We lay out an approach to derive the closed string dual to the simplest possible gauge theory, a single hermitian matrix integral, in the conventional 't Hooft large $N$ limit. In this first installment of three papers, we propose and verify an explicit correspondence with a (mirror) pair of closed topological string theories. On the A-model side, this is a supersymmetric $SL(2, \mathbb{R})_1/U(1)$ Kazama-Suzuki coset (with background momentum modes turned on). The mirror B-model description is in terms of a Landau-Ginzburg theory with superpotential $W(Z)=\frac{1}{Z}+t_2Z$ and its deformations. We arrive at these duals through an "open-closed-open triality". This is the notion that two open string descriptions ought to exist for the same closed string theory depending on how closed strings manifest themselves from open string modes. Applying this idea to the hermitian matrix model gives an exact map** to the Imbimbo-Mukhi matrix model. The latter model is known to capture the physical correlators of the $c=1$ string theory at self-dual radius, which, in turn, has the equivalent topological string descriptions given above. This enables us to establish the equality of correlators, to all genus, between single trace operators in our original matrix model and those of the dual closed strings. Finally, we comment on how this simplest of dualities might be fruitfully viewed in terms of an embedding into the full AdS/CFT correspondence.

In the latter case, holomorphic covering maps play a central role in determining correlators and are associated to Feynman diagrams. After recasting these maps in terms of the worldsheet twistor variables for ${\rm AdS}_3$, we generalise to ${\rm AdS}_5$. We propose stringy incidence relations and appropriate reality conditions for the twistor covering maps. For some special kinematic configurations of correlators, we exhibit an explicit construction of the corresponding covering map. We find that the closed string worldsheet corresponding to this map is related to a gauge theory Feynman diagram by the Strebel construction, as for ${\rm AdS}_3/{\rm CFT}_2$. Rather strikingly, the regularised Strebel area of the worldsheet reproduces the Feynman propagator of the free field theory.

As in the case of ${\rm AdS}_3$, the worldsheet theory contains spectrally flowed representations. We proposed in arXiv:2104.08263 that in each such sector only a finite set of generalised zero modes (`wedge modes') are physical. Here we show that after imposing the appropriate residual gauge conditions, this worldsheet description reproduces precisely the spectrum of the planar gauge theory. More specifically, the states in the sector with $w$ units of spectral flow match with single trace operators built out of $w$ super Yang-Mills fields (`letters'). The resulting physical picture is a covariant version of the BMN light-cone string, now with a finite number of twistorial string bit constituents of an essentially topological worldsheet.

We propose a worldsheet description for the ${\rm AdS}_5\times {\rm S}^5$ string theory dual to large $N$, free ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills in four dimensions. The worldsheet theory is a natural generalisation of the recently investigated tensionless string on ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4$. As in the case of ${\rm AdS}_3$ it has a free field description, with spectrally flowed sectors, and is closely related to an (ambi-)twistor string theory. Here, however, we view it as a critical $N=4$ (closed) string background. We argue that the corresponding worldsheet gauge constraints reduce the degrees of freedom to a finite number of oscillators (string bits) in each spectrally flowed sector. Imposing a set of residual gauge constraints on this reduced oscillator Fock space then determines the physical spectrum of the string theory. Quite remarkably, we find compelling evidence that this prescription reproduces precisely the entire planar spectrum - of single trace operators - of the free super Yang-Mills theory.

We consider manifestly crossing symmetric dispersion relations for Mellin amplitudes of scalar four point correlators in conformal field theories (CFTs). This allows us to set up the non-perturbative Polyakov bootstrap for CFTs in Mellin space on a firm foundation, thereby fixing the contact term ambiguities in the crossing symmetric blocks. Our new approach employs certain "locality" constraints replacing the requirement of crossing symmetry in the usual fixed-$t$ dispersion relation. Using these constraints we show that the sum rules based on the two channel dispersion relations and the present dispersion relations are identical. Our framework allows us to connect with the conceptually rich picture of the Polyakov blocks being Witten diagrams in anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. We also give two sided bounds for Wilson coefficients for effective field theories in AdS space.

Correlators in symmetric orbifold CFTs are given by a finite sum of admissible branched covers of the 2d spacetime. We consider a Gross-Mende like limit where all operators have large twist, and show that the corresponding branched covers can be described via a Penner-like matrix model. The limiting branched covers are given in terms of the spectral curve for this matrix model, which remarkably turns out to be directly related to the Strebel quadratic differential on the covering space. Interpreting the covering space as the world-sheet of the dual string theory, the spacetime CFT correlator thus has the form of an integral over the entire world-sheet moduli space weighted with a Nambu-Goto-like action. Quite strikingly, at leading order this action can also be written as the absolute value of the Schwarzian of the covering map.
Given the equivalence of the symmetric product CFT to tensionless string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3$, this provides an explicit realisation of the underlying mechanism of gauge-string duality originally proposed in arXiv:hep-th/0504229 and further refined in arXiv:0803.2681.

In particular, we directly obtain the unusual delta function localisation of these correlators onto branched covers of the boundary ${\rm S}^2$ by the (genus zero) world-sheet -- this is the key property which makes the equivalence to the dual symmetric orbifold manifest. In our approach, this feature follows from a remarkable `incidence relation' obeyed by the correlators, which is reminiscent of a twistorial string description. In this paper we show how to directly relate the $n$-point correlators of the two sides to one another. In particular, we argue that the correlators of the world-sheet theory are delta-function-localised in string moduli space to those configurations that allow for a holomorphic covering map of the $\text{S}^2$-boundary of $\text{AdS}_3$ by the world-sheet. This striking feature can be seen both from a careful Ward identity analysis, as well as from semi-classically exact AdS$_3$ solutions that are pinned to the boundary. The world-sheet correlators therefore have exactly the same structure as in the Lunin-Mathur construction of symmetric orbifold CFT correlators in terms of a covering surface -- which now gets identified with the world-sheet. Together with the results of arXiv:1803.04423 and arXiv:1812.01007 this essentially demonstrates how the $k=1$ $\text{AdS}_3$ string theory becomes equivalent to the spacetime orbifold CFT in the genus expansion.

To define the worldsheet theory at $k=1$, we employ the hybrid formalism in which the ${\rm AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3$ part is described by the $\mathfrak{psu}(1,1|2)_1$ WZW model (which is well defined). Unlike the case for $k\geq2$, it turns out that the string spectrum at $k=1$ does {\it not} exhibit the long string continuum, and perfectly matches with the large $N$ limit of the symmetric product. We also demonstrate that the fusion rules of the symmetric orbifold are reproduced from the worldsheet perspective. Our proposal therefore affords a tractable worldsheet description of a tensionless limit in string theory, for which the dual CFT is also explicitly known.

We show the necessity for having contact Witten diagrams, in addition to the exchange ones, in two different contexts: a) the large $c$ expansion of the holographic bootstrap b) in the $ε$ expansion at subleading orders to the ones studied already. In doing so, we use alternate simplified representations of the Witten diagrams in Mellin space. This enables us to also obtain compact, explicit expressions (in terms of a ${}_7F_6$ hypergeometric function!) for the analogue of the crossing kernel for Witten diagrams i.e., the decomposition into $s$-channel partial waves of crossed channel exchange diagrams.

For generic $λ$ we find explicit expressions for the low-lying ${\cal W}_\infty[λ]$ modes in terms of the affine Yangian generators, and deduce from this the precise identification between $λ$ and the parameters of the affine Yangian. Furthermore, for the free field cases corresponding to $λ=0$ and $λ=1$ we give closed-form expressions for the affine Yangian generators in terms of the free fields. Interestingly, the relation between the ${\cal W}_\infty$ modes and those of the affine Yangian is a non-local one, in general. We also establish the explicit dictionary between the affine Yangian and the SH$^c$ generators. Given that Yangian algebras are the hallmark of integrability, these identifications should pave the way towards uncovering the relation between the integrable and the higher spin symmetries.

We describe in more detail our approach to the conformal bootstrap which uses the Mellin representation of $CFT_d$ four point functions and expands them in terms of crossing symmetric combinations of $AdS_{d+1}$ Witten exchange functions. We consider arbitrary external scalar operators and set up the conditions for consistency with the operator product expansion. Namely, we demand cancellation of spurious powers (of the cross ratios, in position space) which translate into spurious poles in Mellin space. We discuss two contexts in which we can immediately apply this method by imposing the simplest set of constraint equations. The first is the epsilon expansion. We mostly focus on the Wilson-Fisher fixed point as studied in an epsilon expansion about $d=4$. We reproduce Feynman diagram results for operator dimensions to $O(ε^3)$ rather straightforwardly. This approach also yields new analytic predictions for OPE coefficients to the same order which fit nicely with recent numerical estimates for the Ising model (at $ε=1$). We will also mention some leading order results for scalar theories near three and six dimensions. The second context is a large spin expansion, in any dimension, where we are able to reproduce and go a bit beyond some of the results recently obtained using the (double) light cone expansion. We also have a preliminary discussion about numerical implementation of the above bootstrap scheme in the absence of a small parameter.

This combines the original bootstrap idea of Polyakov with the modern technology of the Mellin representation of CFT amplitudes. We employ exchange Witten diagrams with built in crossing symmetry as our basic building blocks rather than the conventional conformal blocks in a particular channel. Demanding consistency with the operator product expansion (OPE) implies an infinite set of constraints on operator dimensions and OPE coefficients. We illustrate the power of this method in the epsilon expansion of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point by reproducing anomalous dimensions and, strikingly, obtaining OPE coefficients to higher orders in epsilon than currently available using other analytic techniques (including Feynman diagram calculations). Our results enable us to get a somewhat better agreement of certain observables in the 3d Ising model, with the precise numerical values that have been recently obtained.

We show that the massive string spectrum in this background organises itself in terms of representations of this HSS, just as the matter in a conventional higher spin theory does so in terms of representations of the higher spin algebra. In particular, the entire untwisted sector of the orbifold can be viewed as the Fock space built out of the multiparticle states of a single representation of the HSS, the so-called `minimal' representation. The states in the twisted sector can be described in terms of tensor products of a novel family of representations that are somewhat larger than the minimal one.

We confirm this picture explicitly by showing that the large level limit of the N=4 cosets of arXiv:1305.4181, that are dual to a higher spin theory on AdS3, indeed describe a closed subsector of the symmetric product orbifold. Furthermore, we reorganise the full partition function of the symmetric product orbifold in terms of representations of the higher spin algebra (or rather its $W_{\infty}$ extension). In particular, the unbroken stringy symmetries of the tensionless limit are captured by a large chiral algebra which we can describe explicitly in terms of an infinite sum of $W_{\infty}$ representations, thereby exhibiting a vast extension of the conventional higher spin symmetry.

We consider 1+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to a multiplet of massive Dirac fermions transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The only global symmetry of this theory is a U(1) associated with the conserved Dirac fermion number, and we study the theory at variable, non-zero densities. The high density limit is characterized by a deconfined Fermi surface state with Fermi wavevector equal to that of free gauge-charged fermions. Its low energy fluctuations are described by a coset conformal field theory with central charge c=(N^2-1)/3 and an emergent N=(2,2) supersymmetry: the U(1) fermion number symmetry becomes an R-symmetry. We determine the exact scaling dimensions of the operators associated with Friedel oscillations and pairing correlations. For N>2, we find that the symmetries allow relevant perturbations to this state. We discuss aspects of the N->infty limit, and its possible dual description in AdS3 involving string theory or higher-spin gauge theory. We also discuss the low density limit of the theory by computing the low lying bound state spectrum of the large N gauge theory numerically at zero density, using discretized light cone quantization.

The non-linear W_{\infty}[μ] symmetry algebra underlies the duality between the W_N minimal model CFTs and the hs[μ] higher spin theory on AdS_3. It is shown how the structure of this symmetry algebra at the quantum level, i.e. for finite central charge, can be determined completely. The resulting algebra exhibits an exact equivalence (a`triality') between three (generically) distinct values of the parameter μ. This explains, among other things, the agreement of symmetries between the W_N minimal models and the bulk higher spin theory. We also study the consequences of this triality for some of the simplest W_{\infty}[μ] representations, thereby clarifying the analytic continuation between the`light states' of the minimal models and conical defect solutions in the bulk. These considerations also lead us to propose that one of the two scalar fields in the bulk actually has a non-perturbative origin.

We argue that (for N\geq 4) there are special values of the deficit angle for which these geometries are actually smooth configurations of the underlying theory. We also exhibit a gauge in which these geometries can be viewed as wormholes interpolating between two distinct asymptotically AdS_3 spacetimes. Remarkably, the spectrum of smooth SL(N,C) solutions, after an appropriate analytic continuation, exactly matches that of the so-called "light primaries" in the minimal model W_N CFTs at finite N. This gives a candidate bulk interpretation of the latter states in the holographic duality proposed in [1].

The partition function of the W_N minimal model CFT is computed in the large N 't Hooft limit and compared to the spectrum of the proposed holographic dual, a 3d higher spin gravity theory coupled to massive scalar fields. At finite N, the CFT contains additional light states that are not visible in the perturbative gravity theory. We carefully define the large N limit, and give evidence that, at N = infinity, the additional states become null and decouple from all correlation functions. The surviving states are shown to match precisely (for all values of the 't Hooft coupling) with the spectrum of the higher spin gravity theory. The agreement between bulk and boundary is partially explained by symmetry considerations involving the conjectured equivalence between the W_N algebra in the large N limit and the higher spin algebra of the Vasiliev theory.

We make a proposal for the string dual to the simplest large $N$ theory, the Gaussian matrix integral in the 'tHooft limit, and how this dual description emerges from double line graphs. This is a specific realisation of the general approach to gauge-string duality which associates worldsheet riemann surfaces to the Feynman-'tHooft diagrams of a large N gauge theory. We show that a particular version (proposed by Razamat) of this connection, involving integer Strebel differentials, naturally explains the combinatorics of Gaussian matrix correlators. We find that the correlators can be explicitly realised as a sum over a special class of holomorphic maps (Belyi maps) from the worldsheet to a {\it target space} ${\mathbb P}^1$. We are led to identify this target space with the riemann surface associated with the (eigenvalues of the) matrix model. In the process, an AdS/CFT like dictionary, for arbitrary correlators of single trace operators, also emerges in which the holomorphic maps play the role of stringy Witten diagrams. Finally, we provide some evidence that the above string dual is the conventional A-model topological string theory on ${\mathbb P}^1$.

The dual bulk theory contains, in addition to the massless higher spin fields, two complex scalars (of equal mass). The mass is directly related to the 't Hooft coupling constant of the dual CFT. We give convincing evidence that the spectra of the two theories match precisely for all values of the 't Hooft coupling. We also show that the RG flows in the 2d CFT agree exactly with the usual AdS/CFT prediction of the gravity theory. Our proposal is in many ways analogous to the Klebanov-Polyakov conjecture for an AdS_4 dual for the singlet sector of large N vector models.

It has recently been argued that, classically, massless higher spin theories in AdS_3 have an enlarged W_N-symmetry as the algebra of asymptotic isometries. In this note we provide evidence that this symmetry is realised (perturbatively) in the quantum theory. We perform a one loop computation of the fluctuations for a massless spin $s$ field around a thermal AdS_3 background. The resulting determinants are evaluated using the heat kernel techniques of arXiv:0911.5085. The answer factorises holomorphically, and the contributions from the various spin $s$ fields organise themselves into vacuum characters of the W_N symmetry. For the case of the hs(1,1) theory consisting of an infinite tower of massless higher spin particles, the resulting answer can be simply expressed in terms of (two copies of) the MacMahon function.

We make a detailed study of the infinite dimensional Galilean Conformal Algebra (GCA) in the case of two spacetime dimensions. Classically, this algebra is precisely obtained from a contraction of the generators of the relativistic conformal symmetry in 2d. Here we find quantum mechanical realisations of the (centrally extended) GCA by considering scaling limits of certain 2d CFTs. These parent CFTs are non-unitary and have their left and right central charges become large in magnitude and opposite in sign. We therefore develop, in parallel to the usual machinery for 2d CFT, many of the tools for the analysis of the quantum mechanical GCA. These include the representation theory based on GCA primaries, Ward identities for their correlation functions and a nonrelativistic Kac table. In particular, the null vectors of the GCA lead to differential equations for the four point function. The solution to these equations in the simplest case is explicitly obtained and checked to be consistent with various requirements.

Non-relativistic versions of the AdS/CFT conjecture have recently been investigated in some detail. These have primarily been in the context of the Schrodinger symmetry group. Here we initiate a study based on a {\it different} non-relativistic conformal symmetry: one obtained by a parametric contraction of the relativistic conformal group. The resulting Galilean conformal symmetry has the same number of generators as the relativistic symmetry group and thus is different from the Schrodinger group (which has fewer). One of the interesting features of the Galilean Conformal Algebra is that it admits an extension to an {\it infinite} dimensional symmetry algebra (which can potentially be dynamically realised). The latter contains a Virasoro-Kac-Moody subalgebra. We comment on realisations of this extended symmetry in a boundary field theory. We also propose a somewhat unusual geometric structure for the bulk gravity dual to any realisation of this symmetry. This involves taking a Newton-Cartan like limit of Einstein's equations in anti de Sitter space which singles out an $AdS_2$ comprising of the time and radial direction. The infinite dimensional Virasoro extension is identified with the asymptotic isometries of this $AdS_2$.

The worldsheet correlator gets contributions, in this limit, from a whole family of Feynman graphs. We find that it is supported on a {\it curve} in the moduli space parametrised by the worldsheet crossratio. In a further limit of the spacetime correlators we find this curve to be the unit circle. In this case, we also check that the entire worldsheet correlator displays the appropriate crossing symmetry. The non-renormalization of the extremal correlators in the 't Hooft coupling offers a potential window for a comparison of these results with those from strong coupling.

Taking the large $N$ limit of this solution provides a new perspective on the deconfinement transition which is supposed to be dual to the Hawking-Page transition. The large $N$ phase transition manifests itself here in a manner similar to the Douglas-Kazakov phase transition in 2d Yang-Mills theory. We carry out a complete analysis of the saddle representation in the simplest case involving only the order parameter ${\rm Tr}U$. We find that the saddle points corresponding to thermal $AdS$, the small black hole and the large black hole can all be described in terms of free fermions. They all admit a simple phase space description {\it a la} the BPS geometries of Lin, Lunin and Maldacena.

The modular invariance of these CFTs is shown to be built into the formalism. We show that correlation functions in these CFTs which are localized on subspaces of the moduli space may be interpreted as delta-function distributions, and that this can be consistent with a local worldsheet description given some constraints on the operator product expansion coefficients. We illustrate these features by a detailed analysis of a specific four-point function diagram. To reliably compute this correlator we use a novel perturbation scheme which involves an expansion in the large dimension of some operators.

The Schwinger representation gives a systematic procedure for recasting large N field theory amplitudes as integrals over closed string moduli space. This procedure has recently been applied to a class of free field four point functions by Aharony, Komargodski and Razamat, to study the leading terms in the putative worldsheet OPE. Here we observe that the dictionary between Schwinger parameters and the cross ratio of the four punctured sphere actually yields an explicit expression for the full worldsheet four point correlator in many such cases. This expression has a suggestive form and obeys various properties, such as crossing symmetry and mutual locality, expected of a correlator in a two dimensional CFT. Therefore one may take this to be a candidate four point function in a worldsheet description of closed strings on highly curved AdS_5 \times S^5. The general framework, that we develop for computing the relevant Strebel differentials, also admits a systematic perturbation expansion which would be useful for studying more general four point correlators.

From the point of view of holography these two approaches are somewhat complementary in spirit and it is not obvious why they should give the same answer in the presence of arbitrary higher derivative gravity corrections. For the case of the $AdS_5$ Schwarzschild black hole, we explicitly study the leading correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in the presence of a variety of higher derivative corrections studied in the literature, including the Type IIB $R^4$ term. In previous work we have shown that large $N$ field theory amplitudes, in Schwinger parametrised form, can be organised into integrals over the stringy moduli space ${\cal M}_{g,n}\times R_{+}^n$. Here we flesh this out into a concrete implementation of open-closed string duality. In particular, we propose that the closed string worldsheet is reconstructed from the unique Strebel quadratic differential that can be associated to (the dual of) a field theory skeleton graph. We are led, in the process, to identify the inverse Schwinger proper times ($\s_i={1\over \t_i}$) with the lengths of edges of the critical graph of the Strebel differential. Kontsevich's matrix model derivation of the intersection numbers in moduli space provides a concrete example of this identification. It also exhibits how closed string correlators very naturally emerge from the Schwinger parameter integrals. Finally, to illustrate the utility of our approach to open-closed string duality, we outline a method by which a worldsheet OPE can be directly extracted from the field theory expressions. Limits of the Strebel differential for the four punctured sphere play a key role.

We argue that the holographic description of four-dimensional BPS black holes naturally includes multi-center solutions. This suggests that the holographic dual to the gauge theory is not a single AdS_2 times S^2 but a coherent ensemble of them. We verify this in a particular class of examples, where the two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory gives a holographic description of the black holes obtained by branes wrap** Calabi-Yau cycles. Using the free fermionic formulation, we show that O(e^{-N}) non-perturbative effects entangle the two Fermi surfaces. In an Euclidean description, the wave-function of the multi-center black holes gets mapped to the Hartle-Hawking wave-function of baby universes. This provides a concrete realization, within string theory, of effects that can be interpreted as the creation of baby universes. We find that, at least in the case we study, the baby universes do not lead to a loss of quantum coherence, in accord with general arguments.

We show how the relevant closed string moduli space emerges from a reorganisation of the Feynman diagrams contributing to free field correlators. We also indicate why the resulting integrand on moduli space has the right features to be that of a string theory on $AdS$.

From Free Fields to AdS -- II

Abstract:
We continue with the program of hep-th/0308184 to implement open-closed string duality on free gauge field theory (in the large $N$ limit). In this paper we consider correlators such as $\la \prod_{i=1}^n \TrΦ^{J_i}(x_i)\ra$. The Schwinger parametrisation of this $n$-point function exhibits a partial gluing up into a set of basic skeleton graphs. We argue that the moduli space of the planar skel…

We argue that the moduli space of the planar skeleton graphs is exactly the same as the moduli space of genus zero Riemann surfaces with $n$ holes. In other words, we can explicitly rewrite the $n$-point (planar) free field correlator as an integral over the moduli space of a sphere with $n$ holes. A preliminary study of the integrand also indicates compatibility with a string theory on $AdS$. The details of our argument are quite insensitive to the specific form of the operators and generalise to diagrams of higher genus as well. We take this as evidence of the field theory's ability to reorganise itself into a string theory.

Free ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory (in the large $N$ limit) is dual to an, as yet, intractable closed string theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$. We aim to implement open-closed string duality in this system and thereby recast the free field correlation functions as amplitudes in $AdS$. The basic strategy is to implement this duality directly on planar field theory correlation functions in the worldline (or first quantised) formulation. The worldline loops (remnants of the worldsheet holes) close to form tree diagrams. These tree diagrams are then to be manifested as tree amplitudes in $AdS$ by a change of variables on the worldline moduli space (i.e. Schwinger parameter space). Restricting to twist two operators, we are able to carry through this program for two and three point functions. However, it appears that this strategy can be implemented for four and higher point functions as well. An analogy to electrical networks is very useful in this regard.

We study the large $N$ limit of the class of U(N) ${\CN}=1$ SUSY gauge theories with an adjoint scalar and a superpotential $W(¶)$. In each of the vacua of the quantum theory, the expectation values $\la$Tr$Φ^p$$\ra$ are determined by a master matrix $Φ_0$ with eigenvalue distribution $ρ_{GT}(ł)$. $ρ_{GT}(ł)$ is quite distinct from the eigenvalue distribution $ρ_{MM}(ł)$ of the corresponding large $N$ matrix model proposed by Dijkgraaf and Vafa. Nevertheless, it has a simple form on the auxiliary Riemann surface of the matrix model. Thus the underlying geometry of the matrix model leads to a definite prescription for computing $ρ_{GT}(ł)$, knowing $ρ_{MM}(ł)$.

String Interactions in PP-Waves
Authors:

Abstract:
We argue that string interactions in a PP-wave spacetime are governed by an effective coupling $g_{eff}=g_s(μp^+\apm)f(μp^+ \apm)$ where $f(μp^+ \apm)$ is proportional to the light cone energy of the string states involved in the interaction. This simply follows from generalities of a Matrix String description of this background. $g_{eff}$ nicely interpolates between the expected result ($g_s$)…

This simply follows from generalities of a Matrix String description of this background. $g_{eff}$ nicely interpolates between the expected result ($g_s$) for flat space (small $μp^+\apm$) and a recently conjectured expression from the perturbative gauge theory side (large $μp^+\apm$).

We find the moduli space of multi-solitons in noncommutative scalar field theories at large theta, in arbitrary dimension. The existence of a non-trivial moduli space at leading order in 1/theta is a consequence of a Bogomolnyi bound obeyed by the kinetic energy of the theta=infinity solitons. In two spatial dimensions, the parameter space for k solitons is a Kahler de-singularization of the symmetric product (R^2)^k/S_k. We exploit the existence of this moduli space to construct solitons on quotient spaces of the plane: R^2/Z_k, cylinder, and T^2. However, we show that tori of area less than or equal to (2 pi theta) do not admit stable solitons. In four dimensions the moduli space provides an explicit Kahler resolution of (R^4)^k/S_k. In general spatial dimension 2d, we show it is isomorphic to the Hilbert scheme of k points in C^d, which for d > 2 (and k > 3) is not smooth and can have multiple branches.

We find a class of exact solutions of noncommutative gauge theories corresponding to unstable non-BPS solitons. In the two-dimensional euclidean (or 2+1 dimensional lorentzian) U(1) theory we find localized solutions carrying nonzero magnetic flux. In four euclidean dimensions we find non-BPS solutions with the same Pontrjagin charge but greater energy than the usual self-dual Yang-Mills instanton. We conjecture that these solutions and generalizations thereof correspond to nonsupersymmetric configurations of D-(p-2k) branes (or intersections thereof) in a D-p brane in the noncommutative scaling limit of large B-field. In the particular case of a 0-brane on a 2-brane the analysis of small fluctuations reveals an infinite tower of states which agrees exactly with that of the 0-2 CFT in the scaling limit. The spectrum contains a tachyon, and we show explicitly that the endpoint of tachyon condensation corresponds to the 0-brane dissolved in the 2-brane.
