Pushing tasks performed by aerial manipulators can be used for contact-based industrial inspections. Underactuated aerial vehicles are widely employed in aerial manipulation due to their widespread availability and relatively low cost. Industrial infrastructures often consist of diverse oriented work surfaces. When interacting with such surfaces, the coupled gravity compensation and interaction force generation of underactuated aerial vehicles can present the potential challenge of near-saturation operations. The blind utilization of these platforms for such tasks can lead to instability and accidents, creating unsafe operating conditions and potentially damaging the platform. In order to ensure safe pushing on these surfaces while managing platform saturation, this work establishes a safety assessment process. This process involves the prediction of the saturation level of each actuator during pushing across variable surface orientations. Furthermore, the assessment results are used to plan and execute physical experiments, ensuring safe operations and preventing platform damage.

We present a detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of DD CMa, based on published survey photometry and new spectroscopic data. We find an improved orbital period of $P_\mathrm{o}= 2.0084530 \pm 0.0000006 ~\mathrm{d}$. Our spectra reveal H$β$ and H$α$ absorptions with weak emission shoulders and we also find color excess in the WISE multiband photometry, interpreted as signatures of circumstellar matter. We model the $V$-band orbital light curve derived from the ASAS and ASAS-SN surveys, assuming a semidetached configuration and using the mass ratio and temperature of the hotter star derived from our spectroscopic analysis. Our model indicates that the system consists of a B 2.5 dwarf and a B 9 giant of radii 3.2 and 3.7 $\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$, respectively, orbiting in a circular orbit of radius 6.75 $\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$. We also found $M_{\mathrm{c}} = 1.7 \pm 0.1 ~\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, $T_{\mathrm{c}} = 11350 \pm 100 ~\mathrm{K}$ and $M_{\mathrm{h}} = 6.4 \pm 0.1 ~\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, $T_{\mathrm{h}} = 20000 \pm 500 ~\mathrm{K}$, for the cooler and hotter star, respectively. We find broad single emission peaks in H$α$ and H$β$ after subtracting the synthetic stellar spectra. Our results are consistent with mass exchange between the stars, and suggest the existence of a stream of gas being accreted onto the early B-type star.

Context. The detection of planets orbiting chemically peculiar stars is very scarcely known in the literature. Aims. To determine the detailed chemical composition of the remarkable planet host star KELT-17. This object hosts a hot-Jupiter planet with 1.31 MJup detected by transits, being one of the more massive and rapidly rotating planet hosts to date. We aimed to derive a complete chemical pattern for this star, in order to compare it with those of chemically peculiar stars. Methods. We carried out a detailed abundance determination in the planet host star KELT-17 via spectral synthesis. Stellar parameters were estimated iteratively by fitting Balmer line profiles and imposing the Fe ionization balance, using the program SYNTHE together with plane-parallel ATLAS12 model atmospheres. Specific opacities for an arbitrary composition and microturbulence velocity vmicro were calculated through the Opacity Sampling (OS) method. The abundances were determined iteratively by fitting synthetic spectra to metallic lines of 16 different chemical species using the program SYNTHE. The complete chemical pattern of KELT-17 was compared to the recently published average pattern of Am stars. We estimated the stellar radius by two methods: a) comparing the synthetic spectral energy distribution with the available photometric data and the Gaia parallax, and b) using a Bayesian estimation of stellar parameters using stellar isochrones. Results. We found overabundances of Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, and Ba, together with subsolar values of Ca and Sc. Notably, the chemical pattern agrees with those recently published of Am stars, being then KELT-17 the first exoplanet host whose complete chemical pattern is unambiguously identified with this class. The stellar radius derived by two different methods agrees to each other and with those previously obtained in the literature.

Dust particles need to grow efficiently from micrometre sizes to thousands of kilometres to form planets. With the growth of millimetre to meter sizes being hindered by a number of barriers, the recent discovery that dust evolution is able to create `self-induced' dust traps shows promises. The condensation and sublimation of volatile species at certain locations, called snow lines, is also thought to be an important part of planet formation scenarios. Given that dust sticking properties change across a snow line, this raises the question: how do snow lines affect the self-induced dust trap formation mechanism? The question is particularly relevant with the multiple observations of the carbon monoxide (CO) snow line in protoplanetary discs, since its effect on dust growth and dynamics is yet to be understood. In this paper, we present the effects of snow lines in general on the formation of self-induced dust traps in a parameter study, then focus on the CO snow line. We find that for a range of parameters, a dust trap forms at the snow line where the dust accumulates and slowly grows, as found for the water snow line in previous work. We also find that, depending on the grains sticking properties on either side of the CO snow line, it could either be a starting or braking point for dust growth and drift. This could provide clues to understand the link between dust distributions and snow lines in protoplanetary disc observations.

We also observed a photometric modulation with half the orbital period, due to the ellipticity of the stars. We obtained high-resolution spectra and multicolor photometry of V1082 Sgr to study the donor star in this 20.8 hr orbital period binary, which is assumed to be a detached system. We measured the rotational velocity (v sin i = 26.5+/-2.0 km/s), which, coupled with the constraints on the white dwarf mass from the X-ray spectroscopy, leads to the conclusion that the donor star barely fills 70% of its corresponding Roche lobe radius. It appears to be a slightly evolved K2-type star. This conclusion was further supported by a recently published distance to the binary system measured by the Gaia mission. At the same time, it becomes difficult to explain a very high (> 10e-9 Msun/yr) mass transfer and mass accretion rate in a detached binary via stellar wind and magnetic coupling.

Context. The detection of chromospheric activity cycles in solar-analogue and twin stars, can be used to put in context the solar cycle. However, there is a relatively low percentage of these stars with activity cycles detected. It is well known that the cores of Ca II H&K lines are modulated by stellar activity. The behaviour of Balmer and other optical lines with stellar activity is not yet completely understood.
Aims. To search for Ca II H&K, Balmer and Fe II line variations modulated by the stellar activity. In particular, we apply a novel strategy to detect possible shape variations in the Hα line.
Methods. We analyse activity signatures in HD 38858 by using HARPS and CASLEO spectra obtained between 2003 and 2017. We calculate the Mount Wilson index (S$_{MW}$), log($\mathrm{R}'_\mathrm{HK}$) and the statistical moments of Ca II H&K, Balmer and other optical lines. We search for periodicities by using the generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram.
Results. We detect a long-term activity cycle of 10.8 yr in Ca II H&K and Hα, being HD 38858 one of the most similar stars to the Sun for which a cycle has been detected. In contrast, this cycle is marginally detected in the Fe II lines. Also, we detect a noticeable radial velocity variation, which seems to be produced by stellar activity.
Conclusions. HD 38858 is the second solar-analogue star where we find a clear activity cycle which is replicated by Balmer lines. Spectral indexes based on the shape of Hα seems to be more realiable than the fluxes in the same line to detect activity variations. On the other hand, the cyclic modulation detected gives place to a radial velocity variation, previously associated to a super-Earth planet. Finally, due to the similarity of HD 38858 with the Sun, we recommend to continue monitoring this star.

The CFHT/ESPaDOnS archive spectra revealed $P_{\rm orb}=11.5192 \pm 0.0005$ d indicating strong subsynchronous rotation of the primary component. Such a strong subsynchronous rotation was not detected in any other SB2 system with a magnetic chemically peculiar component. Our inspection of the spectra revealed the presence of resolved Zeeman split spectral lines allowing us to determine the variability of the mean magnetic field modulus over the rotation period. The maximum of the magnetic field modulus concides roughly with the positive extremum of the longitudinal field, whereas the minimum of the modulus with the negative extremum of the longitudinal field. No evidence for a longitudinal magnetic field was seen in the circularly polarized spectra of the secondary component. Using archival data from the ASAS3 survey, we find in the frequency spectrum only one significant peak, corresponding to the period $P_{\rm phot}=25.390 \pm 0.014$ d. This value is in good agreements with the previous determination of the rotation period, $P_{\rm rot}=25.380\pm0.007$ d, which was based on longitudinal magnetic field measurements.

We perform, for the first time, a detailed long-term activity study of the binary system $ζ$ Ret. We use all available HARPS spectra obtained between the years 2003 and 2016. We built a time series of the Mount Wilson $S$ index for both stars, then we analyse these series by using Lomb-Scargle periodograms. The components $ζ^{1}$ Ret and $ζ^{2}$ Ret that belong to this binary system are physically very similar to each other and also similar to our Sun, which makes it a remarkable system. We detect in the solar-analogue star $ζ^{2}$ Ret a long-term activity cycle with a period of $\sim$10 yr, similar to the solar one ($\sim$11 yr). It is worthwhile to mention that this object satisfies previous criteria for a flat star and for a cycling star simultaneously. Another interesting feature of this binary system, is a high $\sim$0.220 dex difference between the averages log($\mathrm{R}'_\mathrm{HK}$) activity levels of both stars. Our study clearly shows that $ζ^{1}$ Ret is significantly more active than $ζ^{2}$ Ret. In addition, $ζ^{1}$ Ret shows an erratic variability in its stellar activity. In this work, we explore different scenarios trying to explain this rare behaviour in a pair of coeval stars, which could help to explain the difference in this and other binary systems. From these results, we also warn that for the development of activity-age calibrations (which commonly use binary systems and/or stellar clusters as calibrators) it should be taken into account the whole history of activity available of the stars involved.

HD 164492C is a spectroscopic triple stellar system that has been recently detected to possess a strong magnetic field. We have obtained high-resolution spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observations over a timespan of two years and derived physical, chemical, and magnetic properties for this object. The system is formed by an eccentric close spectroscopic binary (Ca1-Ca2) with a period of 12.5 days, and a massive tertiary Cb. We calculated the orbital parameters of the close pair, reconstructed the spectra of the three components, and determined atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances by spectral synthesis. From spectropolarimetric observations, multi-epoch measurements of the longitudinal magnetic fields were obtained. The magnetic field is strongly variable on timescales of a few days, with a most probable period in the range of 1.4-1.6 days. Star Cb with Teff~25000 K is the apparently fastest rotator and the most massive star of this triple system and has anomalous chemical abundances with a marked overabundance of helium, 0.35+/-0.04 by number. We identified this star as being responsible for the observed magnetic field, although the presence of magnetic fields in the components of the Ca pair cannot be excluded. Star Ca1 with a temperature of about 24000 K presents a normal chemical pattern, while the least massive star Ca2 is a mid-B type star (Teff~15000 K) with an overabundance of silicon. The obtained stellar parameters of the system components suggest a distance of 1.5 kpc and an age of 10-15 Myr.

Models of magnetically-driven accretion and outflows reproduce many observational properties of T Tauri stars. This concept is not well established for the more massive Herbig Ae/Be stars. We intend to examine the magnetospheric accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars and search for rotational modulation using spectroscopic signatures, in this first paper concentrating on the well-studied Herbig Ae star HD101412. We used near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the magnetic Herbig Ae star HD101412 to test the magnetospheric character of its accretion disk/star interaction. We reduced and analyzed 30 spectra of HD101412, acquired with the CRIRES and X-shooter spectrographs installed at the VLT (ESO, Chile). The spectroscopic analysis was based on the He I lambda 10,830 and Pa gamma lines, formed in the accretion region. We found that the temporal behavior of these diagnostic lines in the near-infrared spectra of HD101412 can be explained by rotational modulation of line profiles generated by accreting gas with a period P = 20.53+-1.68 d. The discovery of this period, about half of the magnetic rotation period P_m = 42.076 d previously determined from measurements of the mean longitudinal magnetic field, indicates that the accreted matter falls onto the star in regions close to the magnetic poles intersecting the line-of-sight two times during the rotation cycle. We intend to apply this method to a larger sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars.

To detect activity cycles in solar-analog stars and determine if these can be identified through other optical lines, such as Fe II and Balmer lines. We study the solar-analog star HD 45184. Methods. We analyse the activity signatures of HD 45184 by using 291 HARPS spectra obtained between 2003 and 2014. In order to search for line-core fluxes variations, we focus on Ca II H&K and Balmer H$α$, H$β$ lines, which are usually used as optical chromospheric activity indicators. We calculate the HARPS-S index from Ca II H&K lines and convert it to the Mount-Wilson scale. In addition, we also consider as activity indicators the equivalent widths of Balmer lines. Moreover, we analyse the possible variability of Fe II and other metallic lines in the optical spectra. Results. We report for the first time a long-term 5.14-yr activity cycle in the solar-analog star HD 45184. This makes HD 45184 one of most similar stars to the Sun with known activity cycle. Such variation is also evident in the first lines of the Balmer series, which not always show a correlation with activity in solar-type stars. Notably, unlike the solar case, we also found that the equivalent widths of the high photospheric Fe II lines (4924 Å, 5018 Å and 5169 Å) are modulated ($\pm$ 2 mÅ) by the chromospheric cycle of the star. From short-term modulation of the S index we calculate a rotational period of 19.98 days, which agrees with its mean chromospheric activity level.

Spatially resolving the inner dust cavity of the transitional disks is a key to understanding the connection between planetary formation and disk dispersal. The disk around the Herbig star HD 139614 is of particular interest since it presents a pretransitional nature with an au-sized gap, in the dust, that was spatially resolved by mid-IR interferometry. Using new NIR interferometric observations, we aim to characterize the 0.1-10~au region of the HD~139614 disk further and identify viable mechanisms for the inner disk clearing. We report the first multiwavelength radiative transfer modeling of the interferometric data acquired on HD~139614 with PIONIER, AMBER, and MIDI, complemented by Herschel/PACS photometries. We confirm a gap structure in the um-sized dust, extending from about 2.5 au to 6 au, and constrained the properties of the inner dust component: e.g., a radially increasing surface density profile, and a depletion of 10^3 relative to the outer disk. Since self-shadowing and photoevaporation appears unlikely to be responsible for the au-sized gap of HD~139614, we thus tested if dynamical clearing could be a viable mechanism using hydrodynamical simulations to predict the gaseous disk structure. Indeed, a narrow au-sized gap is expected when a single giant planet interacts with the disk. Assuming that small dust grains are well coupled to the gas, we found that a ~ 3~Mjup planet located at 4.5 au from the star could, in less than 1 Myr, reproduce most of the aspects of the dust surface density profile, while no significant depletion in gas occurred in the inner disk, in contrast to the dust. However, the dust-depleted inner disk could be explained by the expected dust filtration by the gap and the efficient dust growth/fragmentation in the inner disk regions. Our results support the hypothesis of a giant planet opening a gap and sha** the inner region of the HD~139614 disk.

Our recent search for the presence of a magnetic field in the bright early A-type supergiant HD92207 using FORS2 in spectropolarimetric mode revealed the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred Gauss. However, the definite confirmation of the magnetic nature of this object remained pending due to the detection of short-term spectral variability probably affecting the position of line profiles in left- and right-hand polarized spectra. We present new magnetic field measurements of HD92207 obtained on three different epochs in 2013 and 2014 using FORS2 in spectropolarimetric mode. A 3sigma detection of the mean longitudinal magnetic field using the entire spectrum, <B_z>_all=104+-34G, was achieved in observations obtained in 2014 January. At this epoch, the position of the spectral lines appeared stable. Our analysis of spectral line shapes recorded in opposite circularly polarized light, i.e. in light with opposite sense of rotation, reveals that line profiles in the light polarized in a certain direction appear slightly split. The mechanism causing such a behaviour in the circularly polarized light is currently unknown. Trying to settle the issue of short-term variability, we searched for changes in the spectral line profiles on a time scale of 8-10min using HARPS polarimetric spectra and on a time scale of 3-4min using time series obtained with the CORALIE spectrograph. No significant variability was detected on these time scales during the epochs studied.

We present the results of a study of the temporal behaviour of several diagnostic lines formed in the region of the accretion-disk/star interaction in the three magnetic Herbig Ae stars HD101412, HD104237, and HD190073. More than 100 spectra acquired with the ISAAC, X-shooter, and CRIRES spectrographs installed at the VLT-8m telescope (ESO, Chile), as well as at other observatories (OHP, Crimean AO) were analyzed. The spectroscopic data were obtained in the He I lambda10830, Pa gamma and He I lambda5876 lines. We found that the temporal behaviour of the diagnostic lines in the spectra of all program stars can be widely explained by a rotational modulation of the line profiles generated by a local accretion flow. This result is in good agreement with the predictions of the magnetospheric accretion model. For the first time, the rotation period of HD104237 (P_rot = 5.37+-0.03 days), as well as the inclination angle (i = 21+-4deg) were determined. Additional analysis of the HARPSpol spectra of HD104237 and HD190073, taken from the ESO archive, with the use of the SVD method shows that the magnetic field structure of HD190073 is likely more complex than a simple dipole and contains a circumstellar component. For the first time, the magnetic field of the secondary component of the binary system HD104237 was also detected (<B_z> = 128+-10G).

The B fields in OB stars (BOB) survey is an ESO large programme collecting spectropolarimetric observations for a large number of early-type stars in order to study the occurrence rate, properties, and ultimately the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars. As of July 2014, a total of 98 objects were observed over 20 nights with FORS2 and HARPSpol. Our preliminary results indicate that the fraction of magnetic OB stars with an organised, detectable field is low. This conclusion, now independently reached by two different surveys, has profound implications for any theoretical model attempting to explain the field formation in these objects. We discuss in this contribution some important issues addressed by our observations (e.g., the lower bound of the field strength) and the discovery of some remarkable objects.

The aim of this study is to carry out an abundance determination, to search for spectral variability and for the presence of a weak magnetic field in the typical PGa star HD19400. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise HARPS spectropolarimetric observations of HD19400 were obtained at three different epochs in 2011 and 2013. For the first time, we present abundances of various elements determined using an ATLAS12 model, including the abundances of a number of elements not analysed by previous studies, such as Ne I, Ga II, and Xe II. Several lines of As II are also present in the spectra of HD19400. To study the variability, we compared the behaviour of the line profiles of various elements. We report on the first detection of anomalous shapes of line profiles belonging to Mn and Hg, and the variability of the line profiles belonging to the elements Hg, P, Mn, Fe, and Ga. We suggest that the variability of the line profiles of these elements is caused by their non-uniform surface distribution, similar to the presence of chemical spots detected in HgMn stars. The search for the presence of a magnetic field was carried out using the moment technique and the SVD method. Our measurements of the magnetic field with the moment technique using 22 Mn II lines indicate the potential existence of a weak variable longitudinal magnetic field on the first epoch. The SVD method applied to the Mn II lines indicates <B_z>=-76+-25G on the first epoch, and at the same epoch the SVD analysis of the observations using the Fe II lines shows <B_z>=-91+-35G. The calculated false alarm probability values, 0.008 and 0.003, respectively, are above the value 10^{-3}, indicating no detection.

We carried out a spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the binary V4089 Sgr with the aim to obtain absolute masses and radii of the components and to compare these parameters with stellar evolution theoretical models. We took high-resolution spectra and measured radial velocity using standard cross-correlations and a technique of spectral disentangling. Absolute parameters of the components were determined through the simultaneous fitting of measured radial velocities and Geneva photometric data available in the literature. In this way we obtained Ma=2.584+-0.008 Msun, Mb=1.607+-0.007 Msun, Ra=3.959+-0.013 Rsun, and Rb=1.605+-0.016 Rsun. The comparison of these parameters with two grids of theoretical models led to estimate narrow ranges of possible values for system metallicity and age. According to circularization theory it was not expected that the binary had achieved a circular orbit as a result of tidal friction, so the null eccentricity found is an interesting fact. On the other hand, we measured the projected rotational velocity of both components and we conclude that the primary is not synchronized with orbital motion.

Context. This work is part of a long-term spectroscopic study of a sample of 30 multiple stars with early-type components. In this second paper we present the results of six multiple systems in which new stellar components have been detected.
Aims. The main aim is to increase the knowledge of stellar properties and dynamical structure of early-type multiple stellar systems.
Methods. Using spectroscopic observations taken over a time baseline of more than 5 years we measured RVs by cross-correlations and applied a spectral disentangling method to double-lined systems. Besides the discovery of objects with double-lined spectra, the existence of new spectroscopic subsystems have been inferred from the radial velocity variations of single-lined components and through the variation of the barycentric velocity of double-lined subsystems. Orbital elements have been calculated when possible.
Results. Seven new stellar components and two members that we expect to confirm with new observations have been discovered in the six studied multiples. We present orbital parameters for two double-lined binaries and preliminary orbits for three single-lined spectroscopic binaries. Five of the six analysed systems are quadruples, while the remaining has five components distributed in four hierarchical levels. These multiplicity orders are in fact lower limits, since these systems lack high-resolution visual observations and additional hierarchical level might exist in that separation range.
Conclusions. The six analysed systems have greater multiplicity degree and a more complex hierarchical structure than previously known, which suggests that high-order multiple systems are significantly more frequent that it is currently estimated. The long term spectroscopic monitoring of multiple systems has shown to be useful for the detection of companions in intermediate hierarchical levels.

We present a kinematic analysis of three triple stellar systems belonging to two open clusters: CPD-60°961 and HD66137 in NGC2516, and HD315031 in NGC6530. All three systems are hierarchical triples with a close binary bound to a third body in a wider orbit, whose presence is detected through velocity variations of the close binary barycentre. Orbital parameters are derived from radial velocity curves. Absolute parameters for all stars are estimated assuming cluster membership. Some dynamical and evolutionary aspects of these systems are discussed, particularly the possible influence of Kozai cycles. The two systems of NGC2516 have similar orbital configurations with inner periods of 11.23 d and 8.70 d and outer periods of 9.79 yr and 9.24 yr. We report also radial velocity measurements of the components of the visual binary CPD-60°944 in NGC2516. Including results from previous works, this cluster would harbor 5 hierarchical triples. The young system HD315031 has an inner binary with a period of 1.37 d and a very eccentric (e=0.85) outer orbit with a period of 483 d. Possible dynamical evolutionary scenarios are discussed. Long-term radial velocity monitoring is highlighted as strategy for the detection of subsystems with intermediate separations, which are hard to cover with normal spectroscopic studies or visual techniques.

Recent magnetic field surveys in O- and B-type stars revealed that about 10% of the core-hydrogen-burning massive stars host large-scale magnetic fields. The physical origin of these fields is highly debated. To identify and model the physical processes responsible for the generation of magnetic fields in massive stars, it is important to establish whether magnetic massive stars are found in very young star-forming regions or whether they are formed in close interacting binary systems.
In the framework of our ESO Large Program, we carried out low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations with FORS2 in 2013 April of the three most massive central stars in the Trifid nebula, HD164492A, HD164492C, and HD164492D. These observations indicated a strong longitudinal magnetic field of about 500-600G in the poorly studied component HD164492C. To confirm this detection, we used HARPS in spectropolarimetric mode on two consecutive nights in 2013 June.
Our HARPS observations confirmed the longitudinal magnetic field in HD164492C. Furthermore, the HARPS observations revealed that HD164492C cannot be considered as a single star as it possesses one or two companions. The spectral appearance indicates that the primary is most likely of spectral type B1-B1.5V. Since in both observing nights most spectral lines appear blended, it is currently unclear which components are magnetic. Long-term monitoring using high-resolution spectropolarimetry is necessary to separate the contribution of each component to the magnetic signal. Given the location of the system HD164492C in one of the youngest star formation regions, this system can be considered as a Rosetta Stone for our understanding of the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars.

Surface maps of YII, SrII, TiII, and CrII were calculated using the Doppler imaging technique. The results were also compared to equivalent width measurements. The evolution of chemical spots both on short and long time scales were investigated. Results: We determine the binary orbit of HD 11753 and fine-tune the rotation period of the primary. The earlier discovered fast evolution of the chemical spots is confirmed by an analysis using both the chemical spot maps and equivalent width measurements. In addition, a long-term decrease in the overall YII and SrII abundances is discovered. A detailed analysis of the chemical spot configurations reveals some possible evidence that a very weak differential rotation is operating in HD 11753.

Theories on the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars remain poorly developed, because the properties of their magnetic field as function of stellar parameters could not yet be investigated.
To investigate whether magnetic fields in massive stars are ubiquitous or appear only in stars with a specific spectral classification, certain ages, or in a special environment, we acquired 67 new spectropolarimetric observations for 30 massive stars. Among the observed sample, roughly one third of the stars are probable members of clusters at different ages, whereas the remaining stars are field stars not known to belong to any cluster or association.
Spectropolarimetric observations were obtained during four different nights using the low-resolution spectropolarimetric mode of FORS2 (FOcal Reducer low dispersion Spectrograph) mounted on the 8-m Antu telescope of the VLT. Furthermore, we present a number of follow-up observations carried out with the high-resolution spectropolarimeters SOFIN mounted at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) and HARPS mounted at the ESO 3.6m between 2008 and 2011. To assess the membership in open clusters and associations, we used astrometric catalogues with the highest quality kinematic and photometric data currently available.
The presence of a magnetic field is confirmed in nine stars previously observed with FORS1/2: HD36879, HD47839, CPD-282561, CPD-472963, HD93843, HD148937, HD149757, HD328856, and HD164794. New magnetic field detections at a significance level of at least 3sigma were achieved in five stars: HD92206c, HD93521, HD93632, CPD-468221, and HD157857. Among the stars with a detected magnetic field, five stars belong to open clusters with high membership probability. According to previous kinematic studies, five magnetic O-type stars in our sample are candidate runaway stars.

The frequent presence of weak magnetic fields on the surface of spotted late-B stars with HgMn peculiarity in binary systems has been controversial during the two last decades.
We re-analyse available spectropolarimetric material by applying the moment technique on spectral lines of inhomogeneously distributed elements separately. Furthermore, we present new determinations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field for the HgMn star HD65949 and the hotter analog of HgMn stars, the PGa star HD19400, using FORS2 installed at the VLT. We also give new measurements of the eclipsing system AR Aur with a primary star of HgMn peculiarity which were obtained with the SOFIN spectropolarimeter installed at the Nordic Optical Telescope.
We downloaded from the ESO archive the publically available HARPS spectra for eight HgMn stars and one normal and one superficially normal B-type star obtained in 2010. The application of the moment technique to the HARPS and SOFIN spectra allowed us to study the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field, the crossover effect, and quadratic magnetic fields. Results for the HgMn star HD65949 and the PGa star HD19400 are based on a linear regression analysis of low-resolution spectra obtained with FORS2 in spectropolarimetric mode.
Our measurements of the magnetic field with the moment technique using spectral lines of several elements separately reveal the presence of a weak longitudinal magnetic field, a quadratic magnetic field, and the crossover effect on the surface of several HgMn stars as well as normal and superficially normal B-type stars. Furthermore, our analysis suggests the existence of intriguing correlations between the strength of the magnetic field, abundance anomalies, and binary properties.

X-shooter provides a simultaneous, medium-resolution and high-sensitivity spectrum over the entire wavelength range from 300 to 2500 nm. We estimate the mass accretion rates M_acc of the targets from 13 different spectral diagnostics using empiric calibrations derived previously for T Tauri-type stars and brown dwarfs. We have estimated the mass accretion rates of our targets, which range from 2x10^-9 to 2x10^-7 M_sun/yr. Furthermore, we have found accretion rate variability with amplitudes of 0.10-0.40 dex taking place on time scales from one day to tens of days. Additional future night-to-night observations need to be carried out to investigate the character of M_acc variability in details. Our study shows that the majority of the calibrational relations can be applied to Herbig Ae/Be stars, but several of them need to be re-calibrated on the basis of new spectral data for a larger number of Herbig Ae/Be stars.

The recent availability of ESO's high-resolution spectrograph CRIRES offers now the opportunity to study numerous spectral features in the near-IR in intermediate-mass main-sequence and pre-main-sequence stars. High-resolution CRIRES spectra were obtained in three spectral regions, two regions around 1mu and one region around 1.57mu containing magnetically sensitive Fe I lines. The largest number of near-IR spectral features was detected and identified in the well-studied magnetic Ap star gamma Equ. Nearly 30% of the spectral lines in the Ap star HD154708, with one of the strongest magnetic fields known among the Ap stars of the order of 25kG, remain unidentified due to a lack of atomic data. Only very few lines belonging to the rare earth element group have been identified in both Ap stars. A number of spectral lines including the Ce III and Dy II lines appear magnetically split due to the presence of a strong magnetic field in their atmospheres. Variable behaviour of lines of the elements He, N, Mg, Si, and Fe over the rotation period in the spectra of HD101412 confirm our previous finding of variability in the optical region. Due to the very fast rotation of 51Oph, only a few spectral lines have been identified with certainty.

The discovery of exotic abundances, chemical inhomogeneities, and weak magnetic fields on the surface of late B-type primaries in spectroscopic binaries has important implications not only for our understanding of the formation mechanisms of stars with Hg and Mn peculiarities themselves, but also for the general understanding of B-type star formation in binary systems. The origin of the abundance anomalies observed in late B-type stars with HgMn peculiarity is still poorly understood. The connection between HgMn peculiarity and membership in binary and multiple systems is supported by our observations during the last decade. The important result achieved in our studies of a large sample of HgMn stars is the finding that most HgMn stars exhibit spectral variability of various chemical elements, proving that the presence of an inhomogeneous distribution on the surface of these stars is a rather common characteristic and not a rare phenomenon. Further, in the studied systems, we found that all components are chemically peculiar with different abundance patterns. Generally, He and Si variable Bp stars possess large-scale organised magnetic fields that in many cases appear to occur essentially in the form of a single large dipole located close to the centre of the star. The presence of magnetic fields in the atmospheres of HgMn stars has been demonstrated in several studies. In addition to the measurements of longitudinal and quadratic magnetic fields, this work also showed evidence for a relative magnetic intensification of Fe II lines produced by different magnetic desaturations induced by different Zeeman-split components.

Only for very few beta Cephei stars has the behaviour of the magnetic field been studied over the rotation cycle. During the past two years we have obtained multi-epoch polarimetric spectra of the beta Cephei star V1449 Aql with SOFIN at the Nordic Optical Telescope to search for a rotation period and to constrain the geometry of the magnetic field.
The mean longitudinal magnetic field is measured at 13 different epochs. The new measurements, together with the previous FORS1 measurements, have been used for the frequency analysis and the characterization of the magnetic field.
V1449 Aql so far possesses the strongest longitudinal magnetic field of up to 700G among the beta Cephei stars. The resulting periodogram displays three dominant peaks with the highest peak at f=0.0720d^-1 corresponding to a period P=13.893d. The magnetic field geometry can likely be described by a centred dipole with a polar magnetic field strength B_d around 3kG and an inclination angle beta of the magnetic axis to the rotation axis of 76+-4deg. As of today, the strongest longitudinal magnetic fields are detected in the beta Cephei stars V1449 Aql and xi^1 CMa with large radial velocity amplitudes. Their peak-to-peak amplitudes reach ~90km/s and ~33km/s, respectively. Concluding, we briefly discuss the position of the currently known eight magnetic beta Cephei and candidate beta Cephei stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram.

The periodic spectroscopic events in eta Carinae are now well established and occur near the periastron passage of two massive stars in a very eccentric orbit. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the variations of different spectral features, such as an eclipse by the wind-wind collision boundary, a shell ejection from the primary star or accretion of its wind onto the secondary. All of them have problems explaining all the observed phenomena. To better understand the nature of the cyclic events, we performed a dense monitoring of eta Carinae with 5 Southern telescopes during the 2009 low excitation event, resulting in a set of data of unprecedented quality and sampling. The intrinsic luminosity of the He II 4686 emission line (L~310 Lsun) just before periastron reveals the presence of a very luminous transient source of extreme UV radiation emitted in the wind-wind collision (WWC) region. Clumps in the primary's wind probably explain the flare-like behavior of both the X-ray and He II 4686 light-curves. After a short-lived minimum, He II 4686 emission rises again to a ne

We propose a method for measuring the projected rotational velocity $v sin i$ with high-precision even in spectra with blended lines. Though not automatic, our method is designed to be applied systematically to large numbers of objects without excessive computational requirement.
We calculate the cross correlation function (CCF) of the object spectrum against a zero-rotation template and use the Fourier transform (FT) of the CCF central maximum to measure the parameter $v sin i$ taking the limb darkening effect and its wavelength dependence into account. The procedure also improves the definition of the CCF base line resulting in errors related to the continuum position under 1 % even for $vsin i$ = 280 km/s. Tests with high-resolution spectra of F-type stars indicate that an accuracy well below 1 % can be attained even for spectra where most lines are blended.
We have applied the method to measure $v sin i$ in 251 A-type stars. For stars with $vsin i$ over 30 km/s (2-3 times our spectra resolution) our measurement errors are below 2.5 % with a typical value of 1%. We compare our results with Royer et al. (2002a) using 155 stars in common, finding systematic differences of about 5 % for rapidly rotating stars.

Despite of the importance of magnetic fields for the full understanding of the properties of accreting Herbig Ae/Be stars, these fields have scarcely been studied over the rotation cycle until now. One reason for the paucity of such observations is the lack of knowledge of their rotation periods. The sharp-lined young Herbig Ae star HD101412 with a strong surface magnetic field became in the last years one of the most studied targets among the Herbig Ae/Be stars.
A few months ago we obtained multi-epoch polarimetric spectra of this star with FORS2 to search for a rotation period and to constrain the geometry of the magnetic field.
We measured longitudinal magnetic fields on 13 different epochs distributed over 62 days. These new measurements together with our previous measurements of the magnetic field in this star were combined with available photometric observations to determine the rotation period.
The search of the rotation period resulted in P=42.076+-0.01d. According to near-infrared imaging studies the star is observed nearly edge-on. The star exhibits a single-wave variation of the longitudinal magnetic field during the stellar rotation cycle. These observations are usually considered as evidence for a dominant dipolar contribution to the magnetic field topology.

Aims: We investigate Ce III and other possible lanthanides in the spectrum the of hottest chemically peculiar (CP) star in which these elements have been found. A {Kr II line appears within a broad absorption which we suggest may be due to a high-level transition in C II. Methods: Wavelengths and equivalent widths are measured on high-resolution UVES spectra, analyzed, and their phase-variations investigated. Results: New, robust identifications of Ce III and Kr II are demonstrated. Nd III is likely present. A broad absorption near 4619[A] is present at all phases of a Cen, and in some other early B stars. Conclusions: The presence of lanthanides in a Cen strengthens the view that this star is a significant link between the cooler CP stars and the hotter helium-peculiar stars. Broad absorptions in a Cen are not well explained.

Context: Recent attention has been directed to abundance variations among very young stars.
Aims: To perform a detailed abundance study of the Herbig Ae star HD 101412, taking advantage of its unusually sharp spectral lines.
Methods: High-resolution spectra are measured for accurate wavelengths and equivalent widths. Balmer-line fits and ionization equlibria give a relation between Teff, and log(g). Abundance anomalies and uncertain reddening preclude the use of spectral type or photometry to fix Teff. Excitation temperatures are used to break the degeneracy between Teff and log(g).
Results: Strong lines are subject to an anomalous saturation that cannot be removed by assuming a low microturbulence. By restricting the analysis to weak (<= 20 m[A]) lines, we find consistent results for neutral and ionized species, based on a model with Teff = 8300K, and log(g)=3.8. The photosphere is depleted in the most refractory elements, while volatiles are normal or, in the case of nitrogen, overabundant with respect to the sun. The anomalies are unlike those of Ap or Am stars.
Conclusions: We suggest the anomalous saturation of strong lines arises from heating of the upper atmospheric layers by infalling material from a disk. The overall abundance pattern may be related to those found for the Lambda Boo stars, though the depletions of the refractory elements are milder, more like those of Vega. However, the intermediate volatile zinc is depleted, precluding a straightforward interpretation of the abundance pattern in terms of gas-grain separation.

Aims. We gathered about 100 high-resolution spectra of three typical HgMn (mercury-manganese) stars, HD 11753, HD 53244, and HD 221507, to search for slowly pulsating B-like pulsations and surface inhomogeneous distribution of various chemical elements. Methods. Classical frequency analysis methods were used to detect line profile variability and to determine the variation period. Doppler imaging reconstruction was performed to obtain abundance maps of chemical elements on the stellar surface. Results. For HD 11753, which is the star with the most pronounced variability, distinct spectral line profile changes were detected for Ti, Sr, Y, Zr, and Hg, whereas for HD 53244 and HD 221507 the most variable line profiles belong to the elements Hg and Y, respectively. We derived rotation periods for all three stars from the variations of radial velocities and equivalent widths of spectral lines belonging to inhomogeneously distributed elements: P_rot (HD 11753)=9.54 d, P_rot (HD 53244)=6.16 d, and P_rot (HD 221507)=1.93 d. For HD 11753 the Doppler imaging technique was applied to derive the distribution of the most variable elements Ti, Sr, and Y using two datasets separated by ~65 days. Results of Doppler imaging reconstruction revealed noticeable changes in the surface distributions of TiII, SrII, and YII between the datasets, indicating the hitherto not well understood physical processes in stars with radiative envelopes that cause a rather fast dynamical chemical spot evolution.

We obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise UVES and a few lower quality HARPS spectra revealing the presence of resolved magnetically split lines. HD101412 is the first Herbig Ae star for which the rotational Doppler effect was found to be small in comparison to the magnetic splitting. The measured mean magnetic field modulus varies from 2.5 to 3.5kG, while the mean quadratic field was found to vary in the range of 3.5 to 4.8kG. To determine the period of variations, we used radial velocity, equivalent width, line width, and line asymmetry measurements of variable spectral lines of several elements, as well as magnetic field measurements. The most pronounced variability was detected for spectral lines of He I and the iron peak elements, whereas the spectral lines of CNO elements are only slightly variable. From spectral variations and magnetic field measurements we derived a potential rotation period P_rot=13.86d, which has to be proven in future studies with a larger number of observations. It is the first time that the presence of element spots is detected on the surface of a Herbig Ae/Be star. Our previous study of Herbig Ae stars revealed a trend towards stronger magnetic fields for younger Herbig Ae stars, confirmed by statistical tests. This is in contrast to a few other (non-statistical) studies claiming that magnetic Herbig Ae stars are progenitors of the magnetic Ap stars. New developments in MHD theory show that the measured magnetic field strengths are compatible with a current-driven instability of toroidal fields generated by differential rotation in the stellar interior. This explanation for magnetic intermediate-mass stars could be an alternative to a frozen-in fossil field.

Abundances, or upper limits are derived here for 58 elements based on a model with Teff = 13100K, and log(g) = 4.0. Even-Z elements through nickel show minor deviations from solar abundances. Anomalies among the odd-Z elements through copper are mostly small. Beyond the iron peak, a huge scatter is found. The abundance pattern of the heaviest elements resembles the N=126 r-process peak of solar material, though not in detail. We find a significant correlation of the abundance excesses with second ionization potentials for elements with Z > 30. This indicates the relevance of photospheric or near-photospheric processes. We explore a model with mass accretion of exotic material followed by the more commonly accepted differentiation by diffusion. That model leads to a number of predictions which challenge future work.
Likely primary and secondary masses are near 3.3 and 1.6 M(solar), with a separation of ca. 0.25 AU. New atomic structure calculations are presented in two appendices.

The two most massive stars in the system show variable line profiles indicating the presence of chemical spots. Given the youth of the system and the notable chemical peculiarities of their components, this system could give important insights in the origin of chemical anomalies.

Large abundance anomalies have been previously detected in Horizontal Branch B-type stars. We present the first high resolution study of isotopic anomalies and chemical abundances in six Horizontal Branch B-type stars in globular clusters NGC6397 and NGC6752 and compare them to those observed in HgMn stars.
We obtained high-resolution (up to R~115000) UVES spectra of a representative sample of six B-type stars (T183, T191, T193, B652, B2151, B2206).
It is the first time an abundance analysis is performed for all elements for which spectral lines were detected in UVES spectra of Horizontal Branch B-type stars. Our study of these stars revealed no signs of He isotopic anomalies which would produce a ^3He/^4He ratio different from the solar one. The isotopic anomaly of Ca is detected in all six studied stars. The chemical abundance analysis reveals an overabundance over the solar values of P, Ti, Mn, Fe, and Y and an overabundance over the cluster metallicity of Mg, Ca, and Cr. This behaviour is very similar in all six studied stars of both clusters with a few exceptions: The Na abundance is by more than 1.4dex larger than the cluster metallicity in B652, and by more than 0.8dex larger than the cluster metallicity in B2206; the Co abundance is 1.0dex over the solar abundance for T191, while Zr is overabundant over the solar abundance by 0.4dex in B2206. No lines of Hg or other heavy elements were observed in the spectra. Weak emission lines of Ti II, similar to those frequently observed in HgMn stars were discovered in one Horizontal Branch B-type star T191. Further, we detected a radial velocity change of 0.9km s^-1 from one night to the next for T183 and 0.4km s^-1 for B2151.

The discovery of such fields would explain a wide range of well documented enigmatic phenomena in massive stars, in particular cyclical wind variability, H alpha emission variations, chemical peculiarity, narrow X-ray emission lines and non-thermal radio/X-ray emission.
To investigate the incidence of magnetic fields in O stars, we acquired 38 new spectropolarimetric observations with FORS1 (FOcal Reducer low dispersion Spectrograph) mounted on the 8-m Kueyen telescope of the VLT.
Spectropolarimetric observations have been obtained at different phases for a sample of 13 O stars. 10 stars were observed in the spectral range 348-589nm, HD36879 and HD148937 were observed in the spectral region 325-621nm, and HD155806 was observed in both settings. To prove the feasibility of the FORS1 spectropolarimetric mode for the measurements of magnetic fields in hot stars, we present in addition 12 FORS1 observations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field in theta^1 Ori C and compare them with measurements obtained with the MuSiCoS, ESPaDOnS and Narval spectropolarimeters.
Most stars in our sample which have been observed on different nights show a change of the magnetic field polarity, but a field at a significance level of 3sigma has been detected only in four stars, HD36879, HD148937, HD152408, and HD164794. The largest longitudinal magnetic field, <B_z> = -276+-88G, was detected in the Of?p star HD148937. We conclude that large-scale organised magnetic fields with polar field strengths larger than 1kG are not widespread among O-type stars.

We acquired high resolution spectroscopic and low resolution spectropolarimetric observations to achieve the following goals: a) to improve the orbital parameters to allow a more in-depth discussion on the possibility of mass transfer in the binary system, b) to carry out a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundance analysis, and c) to search for the presence of a magnetic field.
The study of the radial velocities using CORALIE spectra allowed us to significantly improve the orbital parameters. A comparative NLTE abundance analysis was undertaken for theta Car and two other early B-type stars with recently detected magnetic fields, tau Sco and xi^1 CMa. The analysis revealed significantly different abundance patterns: a one-order-of-magnitude nitrogen overabundance and carbon depletion was found in theta Car, while the oxygen abundance is roughly solar. For the stars xi^1 CMa and tau Sco the carbon abundance is solar and, while an N excess is also detected, it is of much smaller amplitude (0.4-0.6dex). Such an N overabundance is typical of the values already found for other slowly-rotating (magnetic) B-type dwarfs. For theta Car, we attribute instead the chemical peculiarities to a past episode of mass transfer between the two binary components. The results of the search for a magnetic field using FORS1 at the VLT consisting of 26 measurements over a time span of ~1.2h are rather inconclusive: only few measurements have a significance level of 3sigma. Although we detect a periodicity of the order of ~8.8min in the dataset involving the measurements on all hydrogen Balmer lines with the exception of the Halpha and Hbeta lines, these results have to be confirmed by additional time-resolved magnetic field observations.

The separated spectra allow us to confirm that the spectral types of both components are similar (dMe3.5) and to obtain precise measurements of the orbital period (P = 1.87844 days), minimum masses (M_1 sin^3 i = 0.35 M_sun and M_2 sin^3 i =0.33 M_sun) and other orbital parameters. The photometric observations exhibit a sinusoidal variation with the same period as the orbital period. We interpret this as signs of active regions carried along with rotation in a tidally synchronized system, and study the evolution of the amplitude of the modulation in longer timescales. Together with the mean magnitude, the modulation exhibits a roughly cyclic variation with a period of around 800 days. This periodicity is also found in the flux of the Ca II K lines of both components, which seem to be in phase. The periodic changes in the three observables are interpreted as a sign of a stellar activity cycle. Both components appear to be in phase, which implies that they are magnetically connected. The measured cycle of approximately 2.2 years (800 days) is consistent with previous determinations of activity cycles in similar stars.

The nature of non-variable high-excitation emission lines detected in the optical spectra of normal late-B type and chemically peculiar HgMn and PGa stars is still poorly understood.
To better understand the origin of the weak emission lines in B type stars it is especially important to investigate the spectra of a variety of stars to search for correlations between the emergence of these lines and fundamental stellar parameters.
We have acquired high resolution UVES spectra for the sharp-lined magnetic helium-variable star a Cen over the rotation period of 8.82 d to search for the presence of weak emission lines.
For the first time we present observational evidence for the appearance of variable high-excitation Si II, Mn II and Fe II emission lines in a magnetic Bp star. Si II emissions are the strongest at the phase corresponding to the maximum strength of He I lines. Mn II and Fe II emissions vary in antiphase to the He I lines. A correlation is found between the probable location of Mn and Fe surface spots and the strength of the emission lines. On the basis of the currently available data it seems possible that the same kind of selective excitation process is working in the atmospheres of objects within a broad parameter space which could be defined by age, effective temperature, chemical composition, rotational velocity, and magnetic field. Neutral iron lines previously reported to appear broad and shallow at certain phases are not detected in our spectra, although two of them are identified as He I forbidden lines, showing maximum strength at the phase of the passage of the He rich region across the visible disk.
