We consider the case where the initial area-preserving map $\bar z =λz + Q(z,z^*)$ possesses the central symmetry, i.e. is invariant under the change $z\to -z$, $z^*\to -z^*$. We construct normal forms for such maps in the case $λ= e^{i 2π\frac{p}{q}}$, where $p$ and $q$ are mutually prime integer numbers, $p\leq q$ and $q$ is odd, and study local bifurcations of the fixed point $z=0$ in various settings. We prove the appearance of garlands consisting of four $q$-periodic orbits, two orbits are elliptic and two orbits are saddle, and describe the corresponding bifurcation diagrams for one- and two-parameter families. We also consider the case where the initial map is reversible and find conditions when non-symmetric periodic orbits of the garlands are non-conservative (compose symmetric pairs of stable and unstable orbits as well as area-contracting and area-expanding saddles).

We address the origins of the quasi-periodic breathing observed in [Phys. Rev.\ X vol. 9, 021035 (2019)] in disk-shaped harmonically trapped two-dimensional Bose condensates, where the quasi-period $T_{\text{quasi-breathing}}\sim$~$2T/7$ and $T$ is the period of the harmonic trap. We show that, due to an unexplained coincidence, the first instance of the collapse of the hydrodynamic description, at $t^{*} = \arctan(\sqrt{2})/(2π) T \approx T/7$, emerges as a `skillful impostor' of the quasi-breathing half-period $T_{\text{quasi-breathing}}/2$. At the time $t^{*}$, the velocity field almost vanishes, supporting the requisite time-reversal invariance. We find that this phenomenon persists for scale-invariant gases in all spatial dimensions, being exact in one dimension and, likely, approximate in all others. In $d$ dimensions, the quasi-breathing half-period assumes the form $T_{\text{quasi-breathing}}/2 \equiv t^{*} = \arctan(\sqrt{d})/(2π) T$. Remaining unresolved is the origin of the period-$2T$ breathing, reported in the same experiment.

We consider reversible non-conservative perturbations of the conservative cubic Hénon maps $H_3^{\pm}: \bar x = y, \bar y = -x + M_1 + M_2 y \pm y^3$ and study their influence on the 1:3 resonance, i.e. bifurcations of fixed points with eigenvalues $e^{\pm i 2π/3}$. It follows from the work by Dullin and Meiss, this resonance is degenerate for $M_1=0, M_2=-1$ when the corresponding fixed point is elliptic. We show that bifurcations of this point under reversible perturbations give rise to four 3-periodic orbits, two of them are symmetric and conservative (saddles in the case of map $H_3^+$ and elliptic orbits in the case of map $H_3^-$), the other two orbits are nonsymmetric and they compose symmetric couples of dissipative orbits (attracting and repelling orbits in the case of map $H_3^+$ and saddles with the Jacobians less than 1 and greater than 1 in the case of map $H_3^-$). We show that these local symmetry-breaking bifurcations can lead to mixed dynamics due to accompanying global reversible bifurcations of symmetric non-transversal homo- and heteroclinic cycles. We also generalize the results of Dullin and Meiss to the case of the $p:q$ resonances with odd $q$ and show that all of them are also degenerate for the maps $H_3^{\pm}$ with $M_1=0$.

The recently proposed map [arXiv:2011.01415] between the hydrodynamic equations governing the two-dimensional triangular cold-bosonic breathers [Phys. Rev. X 9, 021035 (2019)] and the high-density zero-temperature triangular free-fermionic clouds, both trapped harmonically, perfectly explains the former phenomenon but leaves uninterpreted the nature of the initial ($t=0$) singularity. This singularity is a density discontinuity that leads, in the bosonic case, to an infinite force at the cloud edge. The map itself becomes invalid at times $t<0$. A similar singularity appears at $t = T/4$, where $T$ is the period of the harmonic trap, with the Fermi-Bose map becoming invalid at $t > T/4$. Here, we first map -- using the scale invariance of the problem -- the trapped motion to an untrapped one. Then we show that in the new representation, the solution [arXiv:2011.01415] becomes, along a ray in the direction normal to one of the three edges of the initial cloud, a freely propagating one-dimensional shock wave of a class proposed by Damski in [Phys.~Rev.~A 69, 043610 (2004)]. There, for a broad class of initial conditions, the one-dimensional hydrodynamic equations can be mapped to the inviscid Burgers' equation, which is equivalent to a nonlinear transport equation. More specifically, under the Damski map, the $t=0$ singularity of the original problem becomes, verbatim, the initial condition for the wave catastrophe solution found by Chandrasekhar in 1943 [Ballistic Research Laboratory Report No. 423 (1943)]. At $t=T/8$, our interpretation ceases to exist: at this instance, all three effectively one-dimensional shock waves emanating from each of the three sides of the initial triangle collide at the origin, and the 2D-1D correspondence between the solution of [arXiv:2011.01415] and the Damski-Chandrasekhar shock wave becomes invalid.

We study the splitting of invariant manifolds of whiskered (hyperbolic) tori with three frequencies in a nearly-integrable Hamiltonian system, whose hyperbolic part is given by a pendulum. We consider a 3-dimensional torus with a fast frequency vector $ω/\sqrt\varepsilon$, with $ω=(1,Ω,\widetildeΩ)$ where $Ω$ is a cubic irrational number whose two conjugates are complex, and the components of $ω$ generate the field $\mathbb Q(Ω)$. A paradigmatic case is the cubic golden vector, given by the (real) number $Ω$ satisfying $Ω^3=1-Ω$, and $\widetildeΩ=Ω^2$. For such 3-dimensional frequency vectors, the standard theory of continued fractions cannot be applied, so we develop a methodology for determining the behavior of the small divisors $\langle k,ω\rangle$, $k\in{\mathbb Z}^3$. Applying the Poincaré-Melnikov method, this allows us to carry out a careful study of the dominant harmonic (which depends on $\varepsilon$) of the Melnikov function, obtaining an asymptotic estimate for the maximal splitting distance, which is exponentially small in $\varepsilon$, and valid for all sufficiently small values of~$\varepsilon$. This estimate behaves like $\exp\{-h_1(\varepsilon)/\varepsilon^{1/6}\}$ and we provide, for the first time in a system with 3 frequencies, an accurate description of the (positive) function $h_1(\varepsilon)$ in the numerator of the exponent, showing that it can be explicitly constructed from the resonance properties of the frequency vector $ω$, and proving that it is a quasiperiodic function (and not periodic) with respect to $\ln\varepsilon$. In this way, we emphasize the strong dependence of the estimates for the splitting on the arithmetic properties of the frequencies.

In Galperin billiards, two balls colliding with a hard wall form an analog calculator for the digits of the number $π$. This classical, one-dimensional three-body system (counting the hard wall) calculates the digits of $π$ in a base determined by the ratio of the masses of the two particles. This base can be any integer, but it can also be an irrational number, or even the base can be $π$ itself. This article reviews previous results for Galperin billiards and then pushes these results farther. We provide a complete explicit solution for the balls' positions and velocities as a function of the collision number and time. We demonstrate that Galperin billiard can be mapped onto a two-particle Calogero-type model. We identify a second dynamical invariant for any mass ratio that provides integrability for the system, and for a sequence of specific mass ratios we identify a third dynamical invariant that establishes superintegrability. Integrability allows us to derive some new exact results for trajectories, and we apply these solutions to analyze the systematic errors that occur in calculating the digits of $π$ with Galperin billiards, including curious cases with irrational number bases.

While for $\mathbf{C}_-$ the 1:4 resonance unfolding has the so-called Arnold degeneracy (the first Birkhoff twist coefficient equals (in absolute value) to the first resonant term coefficient), the map $\mathbf{C}_+$ has a different type of degeneracy because the resonant term can vanish. In the last case, non-symmetric points are created and destroyed at pitchfork bifurcations and, as a result of global bifurcations, the 1:4 resonant chain of islands rotates by $π/4$. For both maps several bifurcations are detected and illustrated.

The splitting of invariant manifolds of whiskered (hyperbolic) tori with two frequencies in a nearly-integrable Hamiltonian system, whose hyperbolic part is given by a pendulum, is studied. We consider a torus with a fast frequency vector $ω/\sqrt\varepsilon$, with $ω=(1,Ω)$ where the frequency ratio $Ω$ is a quadratic irrational number. Applying the Poincaré-Melnikov method, we carry out a careful study of the dominant harmonics of the Melnikov potential. This allows us to provide an asymptotic estimate for the maximal splitting distance, and show the existence of transverse homoclinic orbits to the whiskered tori with an asymptotic estimate for the transversality of the splitting. Both estimates are exponentially small in $\varepsilon$, with the functions in the exponents being periodic with respect to $\ln\varepsilon$, and can be explicitly constructed from the continued fraction of $Ω$. In this way, we emphasize the strong dependence of our results on the arithmetic properties of $Ω$. In particular, for quadratic ratios $Ω$ with a 1-periodic or 2-periodic continued fraction (called metallic and metallic-colored ratios respectively), we provide accurate upper and lower bounds for the splitting. The estimate for the maximal splitting distance is valid for all sufficiently small values of $\varepsilon$, and the transversality can be established for a majority of values of $\varepsilon$, excluding small intervals around some transition values where changes in the dominance of the harmonics take place, and bifurcations could occur.

Inthe quadratic case, we use the continued fractions theory to establish a certain arithmetic property, fulfilled in 24 cases, which allows us to provide asymptotic estimates in a simple way. In the cubic case, we focus our attention to the case in which $Ω$ is the so-called cubic golden number (the real root of $x^3+x-1=0$), obtaining also asymptotic estimates. We point out the similitudes and differences between the results obtained for both the quadratic and cubic cases.
