In this paper we analyze the scattering process in a two-field model in $(1+1)$-dimensions, with the special property to have several topological solutions: i) one with higher rest mass, characterized by a nested defect (lump inside a kink), and ii) four others having lower rest mass, degenerated, and characterized by a kink inside kink. We investigate kink-antikink symmetric scattering, where the kink and antikink have higher rest mass and the same initial velocity modulus $v$. The output of scattering presents a wide range of behaviors, such as annihilation of the kink-antikink pair, the emission of radiation jets, the generation of oscillating pulses and the change of the topological sector. We show that the changing of the topological sector is favored, and only two of the four sectors are possible as outcomes. Moreover, despite the degeneracy in energy, the distribution of the final states is asymmetric in the phase space, being an effect of the presence of vibrational states.

The model depends on a parameter $s>0$. The model has unstable nontopological lump solutions with a bell shape for small $s$, acquiring a flat plateau around the maximum for large $s$. For $s\to\infty$ the $φ^4$ model is recovered. We show that for $s\gtrsim 2$ the lump is metastable with the only negative mode very close to zero. Metastable lumps can propagate and survive long enough to produce dynamical effects. Due to their simplicity, they can be an alternative to the procedure of stabilization which requires, for instance, a complex scalar field to construct nontopological solitons. We study lump-lump collisions in this model, describing the main characteristics of the scattering products at their dependence on $s$ and the initial velocity modulus of each lump.

Also, the models depend of an integer $n$ and, with the increase of $n$, the constructed kink assumes a hybrid character: a compactlike profile on one side and a kinklike profile on the other side. We investigate numerically the kink-antikink and antikink-kink dynamics, with the aim to understand the effect of the transition of the usual kink to the semi-compacton structure. The kink-antikink process shows the formation of one-bounce windows for small values of $n$. The increase of $n$ favors the breaking this structure and the appearance of oscillatory modes. For antikink-kink collisions we report the appearance of two-bounce windows for small values of the parameter. We also found an intricate structure of two-oscillation windows.

The scattering process for small kink-antikink has several possibilities: the changing of the topological sector, one-bounce collision, two-bounce collision, or formation of a bion state. In particular, we observed for small values of $r$ and velocities, the formation of false two-bounce windows and the suppression of true two-bounce windows, despite the presence of an internal shape mode.

In this work we examine kink-antikink collisions in two distinct hyperbolic models. The models depend on a deformation parameter, which controls two main characteristics of the potential with two degenerate minima: the height of the barrier and the values of the minima. In particular, the rest mass of the kinks decreases monotonically as the deformation parameter increases, and we identify the appearance of a gradual suppression of two bounce windows in the kink scattering and the production of long lived oscillons. The two effects are reported in connection to the presence of more than one vibrational state in the stability potential.

We compared the patterns of scattering with known results from polynomial models of the same order. The hyperbolic models considered here tend to the polynomial $φ^4$ and $φ^6$ models in the limit of small values of the scalar field. We show that kinks and antikinks that interact hyperbolically with fourth order differ sensibly from those governed by the polynomial $φ^4$ model. The increasing of the order of interaction to the sixth order shows that the hyperbolic and polynomial models give intricate structures of scattering that differ only slightly. The dependence on the order of interaction are related to some characteristics of the models such as the potential of perturbations and the number of vibrational modes.

In this work we consider a model where the potential has two topological sectors connecting three adjacent minima, as occurs with the $φ^6$ model. In each topological sector, the potential is symmetric around the local maximum. For $φ>0$ there is a linear map between the model and the $λφ^4$ model. For $φ<0$ the potential is reflected. Linear stability analysis of kink and antikink lead to discrete and continuum modes related by a linear coordinate transformation to those known analytically for the $λφ^4$ model. Fixing one topological sector, the structure of antikink-kink scattering is related to the observed in the $λφ^4$ model. For kink-antikink collisions a new structure of bounce windows appear. Depending on the initial velocity, one can have oscillations of the scalar field at the center of mass even for one bounce, or a change of topological sector. We also found a structure of one-bounce, with secondary windows corresponding to the changing of the topological sector accumulating close to each one-bounce windows. The kink-kink collisions are characterized by a repulsive interaction and there is no possibility of forming a bound state.

Gravitational Wave (GW) astronomy severely narrowed down the theoretical space for scalar-tensor theories. We propose a new class of attractor models for Horndeski action in which GWs propagate at the speed of light in the nearby universe but not in the past. To do so we derive new solutions to the interacting dark sector in which the ratio of dark energy and dark matter remains constant, which we refer to as doppelgänger dark energy (DDE). We then remove the interaction between dark matter and dark energy by a suitable change of variables. The accelerated expansion that (we) baryons observe is due to a conformal coupling to the dark energy scalar field. We show how in this context it is possible to find a non trivial subset of solutions in which GWs propagate at the speed of light only at low red-shifts. The model is an attractor, thus reaching the limit $c_{T}\to1$ relatively fast. However, the effect of baryons turns out to be non-negligible and severely constrains the form of the Lagrangian. In passing, we found that in the simplest DDE models the no-ghost conditions for perturbations require a non-universal coupling to gravity. In the end, we comment on possible ways to solve the lack of matter domination stage for DDE models.

The model is characterized by a continuous transition from a potential $V(φ)$ with two vacua to the vacuumless case. The model has kink and antikink solutions that minimize energy. Stability analysis are described by a Schrödinger-like equation with a potential that transits from a volcano-shape with no vibrational states (in the case of vacuumless limit) to a smooth valley with one vibrational state. We are interested on the structure of 2-bounce windows present in kink-antikink scattering processes. The standard mechanism of Campbell-Schonfeld-Wingate (CSW) requires the presence of one vibrational state for the occurrence of 2-bounce windows. We report that the effect of increasing the separation of vacua from the potential $V(φ)$ has the consequence of trading some of the first 2-bounce windows predicted by the CSW mechanism by false 2-bounce windows. Another consequence is the appearance of false 2-bounce windows of zero-order.

We are interested in the dynamics of kink-antikink collisions, focusing on the structure of two-bounce windows. For small deformation and for one or two vibrational modes, the observed two-bounce windows are explained by the standard mechanism of a resonant effect between the first vibrational and the translational modes. With the increasing of the deformation, the effect of the appearance of more than one vibrational mode is the gradual disappearance of the initial two-bounce windows. The total suppression of two-bounce windows even with the presence of a vibrational mode offers a counterexample from what expected from the standard mechanism. For even larger deformation, some two-bounce windows reappear, but with a non-standard structure.

Here we report the discovery of the first minor-body ring system around the Centaur object (10199) Chariklo, a body with equivalent radius 124$\pm$9 km. A multi-chord stellar occultation revealed the presence of two dense rings around Chariklo, with widths of about 7 km and 3 km, optical depths 0.4 and 0.06, and orbital radii 391 and 405 km, respectively. The present orientation of the ring is consistent with an edge-on geometry in 2008, thus providing a simple explanation for the dimming of Chariklo's system between 1997 and 2008, and for the gradual disappearance of ice and other absorption features in its spectrum over the same period. This implies that the rings are partially composed of water ice. These rings may be the remnants of a debris disk, which were possibly confined by embedded kilometre-sized satellites.

In this work we consider kink-antikink collisions for some classes of $(1,1)$-dimensional nonlinear models. We are particularly interested to investigate in which aspect the presence of a general kinetic content in the Lagrangian could be revealed in a collision process. We consider a particular class of models known as twin theories, where different models lead to same solutions for the equations of motion and same energy density profile. The theories can be distinguished in the level of linear stability of defect structure. We study a class of k-defect theories depending on a parameter $M$ which is the twin theory of the usual $φ^4$ theory with standard dynamics. For $M\to\infty$ both models are characterized by the same potential. In the regime $1/M^2<<1$, we obtain analytically the spectrum of excitations around the kink solution. It is shown that with the increasing on the parameter $1/M^2$: i) the gap between the zero-mode and the first-excited mode increases and ii) the tendency of one-bounce collision between kink-antikink increases. We numerically investigate kink-antikink scattering, looking for the influence of the parameter changing for the thickness and number of two-bounce windows, and confronting the results with our analytical findings.

The tubes are formed by radial symmetric defects in $(2,1)$ dimensions, constructed with two scalar fields $φ$ and $χ$, and embedded in the $(3,1)-$dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The general coupling between the topological defect and the scalar field $Φ$ is given by the potential $ηF(φ,χ)Φ^2$. After a convenient decomposition of the field $Φ$, we find that the amplitudes of the radial modes satisfy Schrödinger-like equations whose eigenvalues are the masses of the bosonic resonances. Specifically, we have analyzed two simple couplings: the first one is $F(φ,χ)=χ^2$ for a fourth-order potential and, the second one is a sixth-order interaction characterized by $F(φ,χ)=(φχ)^2$% . In both cases the Schrödinger-like equations are numerically solved with appropriated boundary conditions. Several resonance peaks for both models are obtained and the numerical analysis showed that the fourth-order potential generates more resonances than the sixth-order one.

The defects are formed by rings in $(2,1)$ dimensions, constructed with two scalar field $φ$ and $χ$, and embedded in the $(3,1)-$dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The tube-like defects are attained from a lagrangian density explicitly dependent with the radial distance $r$ relative to the ring axis and the radius and thickness of the its cross-section are related to the energy density. For our purposes we analyze a general Yukawa-like coupling between the topological defect and the fermionic field $ηF(φ,χ)\barψψ$. With a convenient decomposition of the fermionic fields in left- and right- chiralities, we establish a coupled set of first order differential equations for the amplitudes of the left- and right- components of the Dirac field. After decoupling and decomposing the amplitudes in polar coordinates, the radial modes satisfy Schrödinger-like equations whose eigenvalues are the masses of the fermionic resonances. With $F(φ,χ)=φχ$ the Schrödinger-like equations are numerically solved with appropriated boundary conditions. Several resonance peaks for both chiralities are obtained, and the results are confronted with the qualitative analysis of the Schrödinger-like potentials.

In this work we present a new class of real scalar field models admitting strongly interactive kink solutions. Instead of the usual exponential asymptotic behavior these topological solutions exhibit a power-law one. We investigate the interaction force between a pair of kink/anti-kink solutions both analytically and numerically, by integrating the time dependent field equations of the model. Furthermore, working within the first-order framework, we analyze the linear stability of these solutions. The stability analysis leads to Schödinger-like equations with potentials which, despite admitting no bound states, lead to strong resonance peaks. We argue that these properties are important for some possible physical applications.

Plane wave solutions of Schrodinger-like equations obtained from the metric perturbations in 5D braneworld scenarios can present resonant modes. The search for those structures is important because they can provide us massive modes with not suppressed couplings with the membrane. We propose in this paper the study of graviton Kaluza-Klein spectrum in a special kind of membrane that possesses internal structure. The interest in study of these deformed defects is because they have a more rich internal structure that has implications in the matter-energy density along the extra dimensions an this produces a space-time background whose curvature has a splitting, if compared to the usual kink-like models. Such models arise from $(4,1)$-branes constructed with one scalar field coupled with gravity where we find two-kink solutions from deformations of a $φ^4$ potential. The main objective of this work is to observe the effects of deformation process in the resonant modes as well as in the coupling between the graviton massive modes and the brane.

In this work, we examine the Maxwell electrodynamics supplemented by these nine nonbirefringent CPT-even components in aspects related to the Feynman propagator and full consistency (stability, causality, unitarity). We adopt a prescription that parametrizes the nonbirefringent components in terms of a symmetric and traceless tensor, $K_{μν},$ and second parametrization that writes $K_{μν}$ in terms of two arbitrary four-vectors, $U_μ$ and $V_ν.$ We then explicitly evaluate the gauge propagator of this electrodynamics in a tensor closed way. In the sequel, we show that this propagator and involved dispersion relations can be specialized for the parity-odd\ and parity-even sectors of the tensor $(K_{F})_{μνρσ}$. In this way, we reassess some results of the literature and derive some new outcomes showing that the parity-even anisotropic sector engenders a stable, noncausal and unitary electrodynamics.

The influence of a Lorentz-violation on soliton solutions generated by a system of two coupled scalar fields is investigated. Lorentz violation is induced by a fixed tensor coefficient that couples the two fields. The Bogomol'nyi method is applied and first-order differential equations are obtained whose solutions minimize energy and are also solutions of the equations of motion. The analysis of the solutions in phase space shows how the stability is modified with the Lorentz violation. It is shown explicitly that the solutions preserve linear stability despite the presence of Lorentz violation. Considering Lorentz violation as a small perturbation, an analytical method is employed to yield analytical solutions.

Such models give solutions for the scalar field that is the usual kink solution in the extra dimension for a parameter $p=1$ and deformations with a two-kink profile for odd $p>1$. Gravity is localized and resonant modes are found for small values of $p$. The coupling between the scalar field and spinors is a necessary condition for fermions to be localized on such branes. After performing a chiral decomposition of the five-dimensional spinor we found resonances with both chiralities for all odd $p$'s. The correspondence between the spectra for left and right chirality is guaranteed and Dirac fermions are realized on the brane. The increasing of $p$ characterizes the formation of branes with internal structure that turns the gravitational interaction more effective for fermions aside the brane, increasing their lifetime. The influence of the internal structure of the branes and the presence of resonances for gravity and fermionic modes is addressed.

First, we specialize our evaluation for the parity-odd sector of the tensor $W_{μνρσ}$,\ using a parametrization that retains only the three nonbirefringent coefficients. From the poles of the propagator, it is shown that physical modes of this electrodynamics are stable, non-causal and unitary. In the sequel, we carry out the parity-even gauge propagator using a parametrization that allows to work with only the isotropic nonbirefringent element. In this case, we show that the physical modes of the parity-even sector of the tensor $W$ are causal, stable and unitary for a limited range of the isotropic coefficient.

In this work, we focus on some properties of the parity-even sector of the CPT-even electrodynamics of the standard model extension. We analyze how the six non-birefringent terms belonging to this sector modify the static and stationary classical solutions of the usual Maxwell theory. We observe that the parity-even terms do not couple the electric and magnetic sectors (at least in the stationary regime). The Green's method is used to obtain solutions for the field strengths E and B at first order in the Lorentz- covariance-violating parameters. Explicit solutions are attained for point-like and spatially extended sources, for which a dipolar expansion is achieved. Finally, it is presented an Earth-based experiment that can lead (in principle) to an upper bound on the anisotropic coefficients as stringent as $(\widetildeκ_{e-}) ^{ij}<2.9\times10^{-20}.$

We examine how its non-relativistic counterpart, ${(\mathbf{p}-e \mathbf{A})\cdot }\mathbf{v}/{m_{e},}$ affects the Rabi oscillations of a two-level atom coupled with a quantum cavity electromagnetic field. Taking an initial coherent field state in a resonant cavity, it was found that the LV background increases the Rabi frequency and the time interval between collapses and revivals of the population inversion function. It was found that initial field states with low mean number of photons are better probes in order to establish more stringent upper bounds on the background magnitude. In particular, for an initial vacuum state in the cavity the upper limit $\text{v}_{x}<10^{-10}eV$ was attained.

The influence of Lorentz- and CPT-violating terms of the extended Standard Model on a semi-classical two-level system is analyzed. It is shown that the Lorentz-violating background (when coupled with the fermion sector in a vector way) is able to induce modifications on the Rabi oscillation pattern, promoting sensitive modulations on the usual oscillations. As for the term involving the coefficient coupled in an axial vector way, it brings about oscillations both on energy states and on the spin states (implied by the background). It is also seen that such backgrounds are able to yield state oscillations even in the absence of the electromagnetic field. The foreseen effects are used to establish upper bounds on the Lorentz-violating coefficients.

Global topological defects described by real scalar field in (3,1) dimensions coupled to gravity are analyzed. We consider a class of scalar potentials with explicit dependence with distance, evading Derrick's theorem and leading to defects with spherical symmetry. The analysis shows that the defects have finite energy on flat space, contrary to the observed for the global monopole. With the aim to study the gravitational field produced by such defects, after an {\it Ansatz} for the static metric with spherical symmetry, we obtain the coupled system of Einstein and field equations. On the Newtonian approximation, we numerically find that the defects have a repulsive gravitational field. This field is like one generated by a negative mass distributed on a spherical shell. In the weak gravity regime a relation between the Newtonian potential and one of the metric coefficients is obtained. The numerical analysis in this regime leads to a spacetime with a deficit solid angle on the core of the defect.

In this paper we analyze the local localization of gravity in $AdS_4$ thick brane embedded in $AdS_5$ space. The 3-brane is modelled by domain wall solution of a theory with a bulk scalar field coupled to five-dimensional gravity. In addition to small four-dimensional cosmological constant, the vacuum expectation value (vev) of the scalar field controls the emergence of a localized four-dimensional quasi-zero mode. We introduce high temperature effects, and we show that gravity localization on a thick 3-brane is favored below a critical temperature $T_c$. These investigations suggest the appearance of another critical temperature $T_*,$ where the thick 3-brane engenders the geometric $AdS/M/dS$ transitions.
