While deep neural networks are being utilized heavily for autonomous driving, they need to be adapted to new unseen environmental conditions for which they were not trained. We focus on a safety critical application of lane detection, and propose a lightweight, fully unsupervised, real-time adaptation approach that only adapts the batch-normalization parameters of the model. We demonstrate that our technique can perform inference, followed by on-device adaptation, under a tight constraint of 30 FPS on Nvidia Jetson Orin. It shows similar accuracy (avg. of 92.19%) as a state-of-the-art semi-supervised adaptation algorithm but which does not support real-time adaptation.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are sensitive to adversarial examples, resulting in fragile and unreliable performance in the real world. Although adversarial training (AT) is currently one of the most effective methodologies to robustify DNNs, it is computationally very expensive (e.g., 5-10X costlier than standard training). To address this challenge, existing approaches focus on single-step AT, referred to as Fast AT, reducing the overhead of adversarial example generation. Unfortunately, these approaches are known to fail against stronger adversaries. To make AT computationally efficient without compromising robustness, this paper takes a different view of the efficient AT problem. Specifically, we propose to minimize redundancies at the data level by leveraging data pruning. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the data pruning based AT can achieve similar or superior robust (and clean) accuracy as its unpruned counterparts while being significantly faster. For instance, proposed strategies accelerate CIFAR-10 training up to 3.44X and CIFAR-100 training to 2.02X. Additionally, the data pruning methods can readily be reconciled with existing adversarial acceleration tricks to obtain the striking speed-ups of 5.66X and 5.12X on CIFAR-10, 3.67X and 3.07X on CIFAR-100 with TRADES and MART, respectively.

Recently, Diffenderfer and Kailkhura proposed a new paradigm for learning compact yet highly accurate binary neural networks simply by pruning and quantizing randomly weighted full precision neural networks. However, the accuracy of these multi-prize tickets (MPTs) is highly sensitive to the optimal prune ratio, which limits their applicability. Furthermore, the original implementation did not attain any training or inference speed benefits. In this report, we discuss several improvements to overcome these limitations. We show the benefit of the proposed techniques by performing experiments on CIFAR-10.

By employing a mixed SnO$_2$+Sn source, we demonstrate suboxide molecular beam epitaxy growth of phase-pure single crystalline metastable SnO(001) thin films at a growth rate of ~1.0nm/min without the need for additional oxygen. These films grow epitaxially across a wide substrate temperature range from 150 to 450°C. Hence, we present an alternative pathway to overcome the limitations of high Sn or SnO$_2$ cell temperatures and narrow growth windows encountered in previous MBE growth of metastable SnO. In-situ laser reflectometry and line-of-sight quadrupole mass spectrometry were used to investigate the rate of SnO desorption as a function of substrate temperature. While SnO ad-molecules desorption at Ts = 450°C was growth-rate limiting, the SnO films did not desorb at this temperature after growth in vacuum. The SnO (001) thin films are transparent and unintentionally p-type doped, with hole concentrations and mobilities in the range of 0.9 to 6.0x10$^{18}$cm$^{-3}$ and 2.0 to 5.5 cm$^2$/V.s, respectively. These p-type SnO films obtained at low temperatures are promising for back-end-of-line (BEOL) compatible applications and for integration with n-type oxides in p-n heterojunction and field-effect transistors

Time-dependent femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopic ellipsometry studies on zincblende gallium-nitride (zb-GaN) are performed and analyzed between 2.9-3.7eV. An ultra-fast change of the absorption onset (3.23eV for zb-GaN) is observed by investigating the imaginary part of the dielectric function. The 266nm (4.66eV) pump pulses induce a large free-carrier concentration up to $4\times 10^{20}$cm$^{-3}$, influencing the transition energy between conduction and valence bands due to many-body effects, like band filling and band gap renormalization, up to $\approx$500meV. Additionally, the absorption of the pump-beam creates a free-carrier profile within the 605nm zb-GaN layer. This leads to varying optical properties from sample surface to substrate, which are taken into account by grading analysis for an accurate description of the experimental data. A temporal resolution of 100fs allows in-depth investigations of occurring ultra-fast relaxation and recombination processes. We provide a quantitative description of the free-carrier concentration and absorption onset at the sample surface as a function of relaxation, recombination, and diffusion yielding a characteristic relaxation time of 0.19ps and a recombination time of 26.1ps.

Ga$_2$O$_3$ and its polymorphs are attracting increasing attention. The rich structural space of polymorphic oxide systems such as Ga$_2$O$_3$ offers potential for electronic structure engineering, which is of particular interest for a range of applications, such as power electronics. $γ$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ presents a particular challenge across synthesis, characterisation, and theory due to its inherent disorder and resulting complex structure -- electronic structure relationship. Here, density functional theory is used in combination with a machine learning approach to screen nearly one million potential structures, thereby develo** a robust atomistic model of the $γ$-phase. Theoretical results are compared with surface and bulk sensitive soft and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy experiments representative of the occupied and unoccupied states of $γ$-Ga$_2$O$_3$. The first onset of strong absorption at room temperature is found at 5.1 eV from spectroscopic ellipsometry, which agrees well with the excitation maximum at 5.17 eV obtained by PLE spectroscopy, where the latter shifts to 5.33 eV at 5 K. This work presents a leap forward in the treatment of complex, disordered oxides and is a crucial step towards exploring how their electronic structure can be understood in terms of local coordination and overall structure.

The simplest picture of excitons in materials with atomic-like localization of electrons is that of Frenkel excitons, where electrons and holes stay close together, which is associated with a large binding energy. Here, using the example of the layered oxide V$_2$O$_5$ , we show how localized charge-transfer excitations combine to form excitons that also have a huge binding energy but, at the same time, a large electron-hole distance, and we explain this seemingly contradictory finding. The anisotropy of the exciton delocalization is determined by the local anisotropy of the structure, whereas the exciton extends orthogonally to the chains formed by the crystal structure. Moreover, we show that the bright exciton goes together with a dark exciton of even larger binding energy and more pronounced anisotropy. These findings are obtained by combining first principles many-body perturbation theory calculations, ellipsometry experiments, and tight binding modelling, leading to very good agreement and a consistent picture. Our explanation is general and can be extended to other materials.

A pure In$_2$O$_3$ buffer layer between the substrate and (In$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$)$_2$O$_3$ alloy is shown to result in smoother film surfaces and significantly improved crystallinity. Symmetric out-of-plane 2$θ- ω$ x-ray diffraction scans show a single (111) crystal orientation and transmission electron microscopy confirms the single-crystallinity up to $x = 0.18$ and only slight film quality deterioration with increasing Ga content. Partially relaxed layers are demonstrated via reciprocal space map** with lattice parameters fitting well to Vegard's law. However, the Ga cations are not evenly distributed within the films containing nominally $x > 0.11$: inclusions with high Ga density up to $x = 0.50$ are observed within a "matrix" with $x \approx 0.08$. The cubic bixbyite phase is preserved, in both the "matrix" and the inclusions. Moreover, for $x \geq 0.11$, both the Raman phonon lines as well as the optical absorption onset remain nearly constant. Hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements also indicate a widening of the band gap and exhibit similar saturation of the Ga 2p core level position for high Ga contents. This saturation behavior of the spectroscopic properties further supports the limited Ga incorporation into the "matrix" of the film.

Using spectroscopic ellipsometry, a linear dependence of the absorption onset on the Ga content $x$ is found with a blueshift of up to 150 meV for $x = 0.1$. Consistently, the fundamental band gap exhibits a blueshift as determined by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The dependence of the absorption onset and the effective electron mass on the electron concentration is derived from the infrared dielectric functions for a Sn doped alloy film. The influence of alloying on phonon modes is analyzed on the basis of Raman spectroscopic measurements. The frequencies of several phonon modes are identified as sensitive measures for the spectroscopic determination of the Ga content.

Federated learning is an emerging data-private distributed learning framework, which, however, is vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Although several heuristic defenses are proposed to enhance the robustness of federated learning, they do not provide certifiable robustness guarantees. In this paper, we incorporate randomized smoothing techniques into federated adversarial training to enable data-private distributed learning with certifiable robustness to test-time adversarial perturbations. Our experiments show that such an advanced federated adversarial learning framework can deliver models as robust as those trained by the centralized training. Further, this enables provably-robust classifiers to $\ell_2$-bounded adversarial perturbations in a distributed setup. We also show that one-point gradient estimation based training approach is $2-3\times$ faster than popular stochastic estimator based approach without any noticeable certified robustness differences.

Information theoretic sensor management approaches are an ideal solution to state estimation problems when considering the optimal control of multi-agent systems, however they are too computationally intensive for large state spaces, especially when considering the limited computational resources typical of large-scale distributed multi-agent systems. Reinforcement learning (RL) is a promising alternative which can find approximate solutions to distributed optimal control problems that take into account the resource constraints inherent in many systems of distributed agents. However, the RL training can be prohibitively inefficient, especially in low-information environments where agents receive little to no feedback in large portions of the state space. We propose a hybrid information-driven multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) approach that utilizes information theoretic models as heuristics to help the agents navigate large sparse state spaces, coupled with information based rewards in an RL framework to learn higher-level policies. This paper presents our ongoing work towards this objective. Our preliminary findings show that such an approach can result in a system of agents that are approximately three orders of magnitude more efficient at exploring a sparse state space than naive baseline metrics. While the work is still in its early stages, it provides a promising direction for future research.

NiO layers were grown on MgO(100), MgO(110), and MgO(111) substrates by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy under Ni-flux limited growth conditions. Single crystalline growth with a cube-on-cube epitaxial relationship was confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements for all used growth conditions and substrates except MgO(111). A detailed growth series on MgO(100) was prepared using substrate temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 900 °C to investigate the influence on the layer characteristics. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicated close-to-stoichiometric layers with an oxygen content of ~47 at. % and ~50 at. % grown under low and high O-flux, respectively. All NiO layers had a root-mean-square surface roughness below 1 nm, measured by atomic force microscopy, except for rougher layers grown at 900 °C or using molecular oxygen. Growth at 900 °C led to a significant diffusion of Mg from the substrate into the film. The relative intensity of the quasi-forbidden one-phonon Raman peak is introduced as a gauge of the crystal quality, indicating the highest layer quality for growth at low oxygen flux and high growth temperature, likely due to the resulting high adatom diffusion length during growth. The optical and electrical properties were investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry and resistance measurements, respectively. All NiO layers were transparent with an optical bandgap around 3.6 eV and semi-insulating at room temperature. However, changes upon exposure to reducing or oxidizing gases of the resistance of a representative layer at elevated temperature were able to confirm p-type conductivity, highlighting their suitability as a model system for research on oxide-based gas sensing.

Many machine learning problems can be formulated as consensus optimization problems which can be solved efficiently via a cooperative multi-agent system. However, the agents in the system can be unreliable due to a variety of reasons: noise, faults and attacks. Providing erroneous updates leads the optimization process in a wrong direction, and degrades the performance of distributed machine learning algorithms. This paper considers the problem of decentralized learning using ADMM in the presence of unreliable agents. First, we rigorously analyze the effect of erroneous updates (in ADMM learning iterations) on the convergence behavior of multi-agent system. We show that the algorithm linearly converges to a neighborhood of the optimal solution under certain conditions and characterize the neighborhood size analytically. Next, we provide guidelines for network design to achieve a faster convergence. We also provide conditions on the erroneous updates for exact convergence to the optimal solution. Finally, to mitigate the influence of unreliable agents, we propose \textsf{ROAD}, a robust variant of ADMM, and show its resilience to unreliable agents with an exact convergence to the optimum.
