NiO thin films with various strains were grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and MgO substrates using a pulsed laser deposition technique. The films were characterized using an x-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscopy, and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. The films grown on STO (001) substrate show a compressive in-plane strain which increases as the film thickness is reduced, resulting in an increase of the NiO phonon frequency. On the other hand, a tensile strain was detected in the NiO film grown on MgO (001) substrate which induces a softening of the phonon frequency. Overall, the variation of in-plane strain from -0.36% to +0.48% yields the decrease of the phonon frequency from 409.6 cm-1 to 377.5 cm-1 which occurs due to the ~1% change of the inter-atomic distances. The magnetic exchange -driven phonon splitting Delta(W) in three different sample, with relaxed (i.e. zero) strain, 0.36% compressive and 0.48% tensile strain was measured as a function of temperature. The Delta(W) increases on cooling in NiO relaxed film as in the previously published work on a bulk crystal. The splitting increases on cooling also in 0.48% tensile strained film, but Delta(W) is systematically 3-4 cm-1 smaller than in relaxed film. Since the phonon splitting is proportional to the non-dominant magnetic exchange interaction J1, the reduction of phonon splitting in tensile-strained film was explained by a diminishing J1 with lattice expansion. Increase of Delta(W) on cooling can be also explained by rising of J1 with reduced temperature.

MnO thin films with various thicknesses and strains were grown on MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition, then characterized using x-ray diffraction and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Films grown on (001)-oriented MgO substrates exhibit homogenous biaxial compressive strain which increases as the film thickness is reduced. For that reason, the frequency of doubly-degenerate phonon increases with the strain, and splits below Néel temperature TN due to the magnetic-exchange interaction. Films grown on (110)-oriented MgO substrates exhibit a huge phonon splitting already at room temperature due to the anisotropic in-plane compressive strain. Below TN, additional phonon is activated in the IR spectra; this trend is evidence for a spin-order-induced structural phase transition from tetragonal to monoclinic phase. Total phonon splitting is 55 cm-1 in (110)-oriented MnO film, which is more than twice the value in bulk MnO. This result is evidence that the nearest neighbor exchange interaction, which is responsible for the magnetically driven phonon splitting, is greatly increased in compressively strained films.

The structural phase transition in hexagonal BaMnO$_3$ occurring at $T_c$=130 K was studied in ceramic samples using electron and X-ray diffraction, second harmonic generation as well as by dielectric and lattice dynamic spectroscopies. The low-temperature phase (space group $P6_{3}cm$) is ferroelectric with a triplicated unit cell. The phase transition is driven by an optical soft mode from the Brillouin-zone boundary [$q = (\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{3},0)$]; this mode activates in infrared and Raman spectra below $T_c$ and it hardens according to the Cochran law. Upon cooling below $T_c$, the permittivity exhibits an unusual linear increase with temperature; below 60 K, in turn, a frequency-dependent decrease is observed, which can be explained by slowing-down of ferroelectric domain wall motions. Based on our data we could not distinguish whether the high-temperature phase is paraelectric or polar (space groups $P6_{3}/mmc$ or $P6_{3}mc$, respectively). Both variants of the phase transition to the ferroelectric phase are discussed based on the Landau theory. Electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal an onset of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering below $\approx220\,\rm K$ which develops fully near 140 K and, below $T_{n} \approx 59\,\rm K$, it transforms into a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order.

We studied experimentally the high-temperature magnetoelectric $({\rm Ba}_{x}{\rm Sr}_{1-x})_3\rm Co_2Fe_{24}O_{41}$ prepared as ceramics (x = 0, 0.2) and a single crystal (x = 0.5) using inelastic neutron scattering, THz time-domain, Raman and far-infrared spectroscopies. The spectra, measured with varying temperature and magnetic field, reveal rich information about the collective spin and lattice excitations. In the ceramics, we observed an infrared-active magnon which is absent in $E^ω\perp z$ polarized THz spectra of the crystal, and we assume that it is an electromagnon active in $E^ω \| z$ polarized spectra. On heating from 7 to 250 K, the frequency of this electromagnon drops from 36 to 25 cm$^{-1}$ and its dam** gradually increases, so it becomes overdamped at room temperature. Applying external magnetic field has a similar effect on the dam** and frequency of the electromagnon, and the mode is no more observable in the THz spectra above 2 T, as the transverse-conical magnetic structure transforms into a collinear one. Raman spectra reveal another spin excitation with a slightly different frequency and much higher dam**. Upon applying magnetic field higher than 3 T, in the low-frequency part of the THz spectra, a narrow excitation appears whose frequency linearly increases with magnetic field. We interpret this feature as the ferromagnetic resonance.

We present a comprehensive study of polar and magnetic excitations in BiFeO3 ceramics and a thin film epitaxially grown on an orthorhombic (110) TbScO3 substrate. Infrared reflectivity spectroscopy was performed at temperatures from 5 to 900 K for the ceramics and below room temperature for the thin film. All 13 polar phonons allowed by the factor-group analysis were observed in theceramic samples. The thin-film spectra revealed 12 phonon modes only and an additional weak excitation, probably of spin origin. On heating towards the ferroelectric phase transition near 1100 K, some phonons soften, leading to an increase in the static permittivity. In the ceramics, terahertz transmission spectra show five low-energy magnetic excitations including two which were not previously known to be infrared active; at 5 K, their frequencies are 53 and 56 cm-1. Heating induces softening of all magnetic modes. At a temperature of 5 K, applying an external magnetic field of up to 7 T irreversibly alters the intensities of some of these modes. The frequencies of the observed spin excitations provide support for the recently developed complex model of magnetic interactions in BiFeO3 (R.S. Fishman, Phys. Rev. B 87, 224419 (2013)). The simultaneous infrared and Raman activity of the spin excitations is consistent with their assignment to electromagnons.

Spin and lattice dynamics of CaMn7O12 ceramics were investigated using infrared, THz and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopies in the temperature range 2 to 590 K, and, at low temperatures, in applied magnetic fields of up to 12 T. On cooling, we observed phonon splitting accompanying the structural phase transition at Tc = 450K as well as the onset of the incommensurately modulated structure at 250 K. In the two antiferromagnetic phases below T_N1 = 90K and T_N2 = 48 K, several infrared-active excitations emerge in the meV range; their frequencies correspond to the maxima in the magnon density of states obtained by INS. At the magnetic phase transitions, these modes display strong anomalies and for some of them, a transfer of dielectric strength from the higher-frequency phonons is observed. We propose that these modes are electromagnons. Remarkably, at least two of these modes remain active also in the paramagnetic phase; for this reason, we call them paraelectromagnons. In accordance with this observation, quasielastic neutron scattering revealed short-range magnetic correlations persisting within temperatures up to 500K above T_N1.

Infrared reflectivity spectra of cubic SrMnO$_{3}$ ceramics reveal 18 % stiffening of the lowest-frequency phonon below the antiferromagnetic phase transition occurring at T$_{N}$ = 233 K. Such a large temperature change of the polar phonon frequency is extraordinary and we attribute it to an exceptionally strong spin-phonon coupling in this material. This is consistent with our prediction from first principles calculations. Moreover, polar phonons become Raman active below T$_{N}$, although their activation is forbidden by symmetry in $Pm\bar{3}m$ space group. This gives evidence that the cubic $Pm\bar{3}m$ symmetry is locally broken below T$_{N}$ due to a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Multiphonon and multimagnon scattering is also observed in Raman spectra. Microwave and THz permittivity is strongly influenced by hop** electronic conductivity, which is caused by small non-stoichiometry of the sample. Thermoelectric measurements show room-temperature concentration of free carriers $n_{e}=$3.6 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ and the sample composition Sr$^{2+}$Mn$_{0.98}^{4+}$Mn$_{0.02}^{3+}$O$_{2.99}^{2-}$. The conductivity exhibits very unusual temperature behavior: THz conductivity increases on cooling, while the static conductivity markedly decreases on cooling. We attribute this to different conductivity of the ceramic grains and grain boundaries.

Electromagnons are known from multiferroics as spin waves excited by the electric component of electromagnetic radiation. We report the discovery of an excitation in the far-infrared spectra of eps-Fe2O3 which we attribute to an electromagnon appearing below 110 K, where the ferrimagnetic structure becomes incommensurately modulated. Inelastic neutron scattering shows that the electromagnon energy corresponds to that of a magnon from the Brillouin zone boundary. Dielectric measurements did not reveal any sign of ferroelectricity in eps-Fe2O3 down to 10 K, despite its acentric crystal structure. This shows that the activation of an electromagnon requires, in addition to the polar ferrimagnetic structure, a modulation of the magnetic structure. We demonstrate that a combination of inelastic neutron scattering with infrared and / or terahertz spectroscopies allows detecting electromagnons in ceramics, where no crystal-orientation analysis of THz and infrared spectra is possible.

We performed factor-group analysis of all phonons in possible monoclinic C2/c and C2 structures of BiMnO3 and compared it with our experimental infrared and Raman spectra. We conclude that the crystal structure is centrosymmetric C2/c in the whole investigated temperature range from 10 to 550 K, therefore BiMnO3 cannot be ferroelectric. We revealed a dielectric relaxation in THz spectra above the structural phase transition taking place at T_C1=475 K giving evidence in strong lattice anharmonicity and a large dynamical disorder of Bi cations above T_C1. Step-like dielectric anomaly observed at T_C1 in THz permittivity reminds antiferroelectric phase transition. Nevertheless, the low-temperature dielectric studies did not reveal any antiferroelectric or ferroelectric hysteresis loop. Our experimental results support theoretical paper of P. Baettig et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 129, 9854 (2007)) claiming that BiMnO3 is not multiferroic, but only antipolar ferromagnet.

Dielectric and magnetic properties of Eu0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25TiO3 are investigated between 10 K and 300 K in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 THz. A peak in permittivity revealed near 130 K and observed ferroelectric hysteresis loops prove the ferroelectric order below thistemperature. The peak in permittivity is given mainly by softening of the lowest frequency polar phonon (soft mode revealed in THz and IR spectra) that demonstrates displacive character of the phase transition. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis reveals cubic structure, but the IR reflectivity spectra give evidence of a lower crystal structure, presumably tetragonal I4/mcm with tilted oxygen octahedra as it has been observed in EuTiO3. The magnetic measurements show that the antiferromagnetic order occurs below 1.8 K. Eu0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25TiO3 has three times lower coercive field than Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3, therefore we propose this system for measurements of electric dipole moment of electron.

The phase transition is analogous to SrTiO3. However, some ceramics as well as single crystals of EuTiO3 show different infrared reflectivity spectra bringing evidence of a different crystal structure. In such samples electron diffraction revealed an incommensurate tetragonal structure with modulation wavevector q ~ 0.38 a*. Extra phonons in samples with modulated structure are activated in the IR spectra due to folding of the Brillouin zone. We propose that defects like Eu3+ and oxygen vacancies strongly influence the temperature of the phase transition to antiferrodistortive phase as well as the tendency to incommensurate modulation in EuTiO3.

Enhancement of the Neel temperature by 1 K with 0.9% compressive strain was revealed. The polar phonons ofthe films have been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field by means of infrared reflectance spectroscopy. All three infrared active phonons show strongly stiffened frequencies compared to bulk EuTiO3 in accordance with first principles calculations. The phonon frequencies exhibit gradual softening on cooling leading to an increase in static permittivity. A new polar phonon with frequency near the TO1 soft mode was detected below 150 K. The new mode coupled with the TO1 mode was assigned as the optical phonon from the Brillouin zone edge, which is activated in infrared spectra due to an antiferrodistortive phase transition and due to simultaneous presence of polar and/or magnetic nanoclusters. In the antiferromagnetic phase we have observed a remarkable softening of the lowest-frequency polar phonon under an applied magnetic field, which qualitatively agrees with first principles calculations. This demonstrates the strong spin-phonon coupling in EuTiO3, which is responsible for the pronounced dependence of its static permittivity on magnetic field in the antiferromagnetic phase.

Terahertz and far-infrared electric and magnetic responses of hexagonal piezomagnetic YMnO3 single crystals are investigated. Antiferromagnetic resonance is observed in the spectra of magnetic permeability mu_a [H(omega) oriented within the hexagonal plane] below the Neel temperature T_N. This excitation softens from 41 to 32 cm-1 on heating and finally disappears above T_N. An additional weak and heavily-damped excitation is seen in the spectra of complex dielectric permittivity epsilon_c within the same frequency range. This excitation contributes to the dielectric spectra in both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. Its oscillator strength significantly increases on heating towards room temperature thus providing evidence of piezomagnetic or higher-order couplings to polar phonons. Other heavily-damped dielectric excitations are detected near 100 cm-1 in the paramagnetic phase in both epsilon_c and epsilon_a spectra and they exhibit similar temperature behavior. These excitations appearing in the frequency range of magnon branches well below polar phonons could remind electromagnons; however, their temperature dependence is quite different. We have used density functional theory for calculating phonon dispersion branches in the whole Brillouin zone. A detailed analysis of these results and of previously published magnon dispersion branches brought us to the conclusion that the observed absorption bands stem from phonon-phonon and phonon- paramagnon differential absorption processes. The latter is enabled by a strong short-range in-plane spin correlations in the paramagnetic phase.

Moreover, a strong THz dielectric relaxation is seen in paraelectric phase. Its relaxation frequency softens on cooling towards Tc ~ 600 K, its dielectric strength simultaneously decreases and finaly the relaxation disappears from the spectra below 450 K. Both phonon and dielectric relaxation behavior is responsible for a decrease in the dielectric permittivity at the antiferroelectric phase transition. Origin of unusual strong THz dielectric relaxation in paraelectric phase is discussed. Bi_0.85Nd_0.15FeO_3 structrure lies on the phase boundary between polar rhombohedral and non-polar orthorhombic phase and owing to this the polarization rotation and polarization extension can enhance the piezoelectric response of this system. Similarities and discrepancies with lead-based piezoelectric perovskites, exhibiting morphotrophic phase boundary between two ferroelectric phases, are discussed.

Abstract:
We report an investigation of hexagonal Y_(1-x)Eu_xMnO_3 ceramics with x=0, 0.1 and 0.2 using infrared and THz spectroscopies in the temperature range between 5 and 900 K. The temperature dependence of the THz permittivity reveals a kink near the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature T_N ~ 70 K giving evidence of a strong spin-lattice coupling. Below T_N two absorption peaks were revealed in the THz spectra close to 43 and 73 cm-1. While the first peak corresponds to a sharp antiferromagnetic resonance exhibiting softening on heating towards TN, the second one may be attributed to an impurity mode or a multiphonon absorption peak. High-temperature THz spectra measured up to 900 K reveal only small gradual increase of the permittivity in agreement with a weak phonon softening observed in the infrared reflectance spectra upon heating. This corresponds to an improper ferroelectric character of the phase transition proposed from first principle calculations by Fennie and Rabe [Phys. Rev. B 72 (2005), pp. 100103(R)].

We describe the first-principles design and subsequent synthesis of a new material with the specific functionalities required for a solid-state-based search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron. We show computationally that perovskite-structure europium barium titanate should exhibit the required large and pressure-dependent ferroelectric polarization, local magnetic moments, and absence of magnetic ordering even at liquid helium temperature. Subsequent synthesis and characterization of Eu$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ ceramics confirm the predicted desirable properties.

Abstract:
Sr_(9-x)PbxCe2Ti12O36 system is derived from the perovskite SrTiO3 and its chemical formula can be written as (Sr_(1-y)Pby)0.75Ce0.167TiO3. We investigated dielectric response of Sr_(9-x)PbxCe2Ti12O36 ceramics (x = 0-9) between 100 Hz and 100 THz at temperatures from 10 to 700 K using low- and high-frequency dielectric, microwave (MW), THz and infrared spectroscopy. We revealed that Sr9Ce2Ti12O36 is an incipient ferroelectric with the R-3c trigonal structure whose relative permittivity e' increases from 167 at 300 K and saturates near 240 below 30 K. The subsequent substitution of Sr by Pb enhances e' to several thousands and induces a ferroelectric phase transition to monoclinic Cc phase for x>=3. Its critical temperature Tc linearly depends on the Pb concentration and reaches 550 K for x=9. The phase transition is of displacive type. The soft mode frequency follows the Barrett formula in samples with x<=2 (typical for quantum paraelectrics) and the Cochran formula for x>=3. The MW dispersion is lacking and quality factor Q is high in samples with low Pb concentration, although the permittivity is very high in some cases. However, due to the lattice softening, the temperature coefficient of the permittivity is rather high. The best MW quality factor was observed for x=1: Q*f=5800 GHz and e'=250. Concluding, the dielectric properties of Sr_(9- x)PbxCe2Ti12O36 are similar to those of Ba_(1-x)SrxTiO3 so that this system can be presumably used as an alternative for MW devices or capacitors.
