Graph Neural Networks often struggle with long-range information propagation and in the presence of heterophilous neighborhoods. We address both challenges with a unified framework that incorporates a clustering inductive bias into the message passing mechanism, using additional cluster-nodes. Central to our approach is the formulation of an optimal transport based implicit clustering objective function. However, the algorithm for solving the implicit objective function needs to be differentiable to enable end-to-end learning of the GNN. To facilitate this, we adopt an entropy regularized objective function and propose an iterative optimization process, alternating between solving for the cluster assignments and updating the node/cluster-node embeddings. Notably, our derived closed-form optimization steps are themselves simple yet elegant message passing steps operating seamlessly on a bipartite graph of nodes and cluster-nodes. Our clustering-based approach can effectively capture both local and global information, demonstrated by extensive experiments on both heterophilous and homophilous datasets.

This paper addresses the challenge of object-centric layout generation under spatial constraints, seen in multiple domains including floorplan design process. The design process typically involves specifying a set of spatial constraints that include object attributes like size and inter-object relations such as relative positioning. Existing works, which typically represent objects as single nodes, lack the granularity to accurately model complex interactions between objects. For instance, often only certain parts of an object, like a room's right wall, interact with adjacent objects. To address this gap, we introduce a factor graph based approach with four latent variable nodes for each room, and a factor node for each constraint. The factor nodes represent dependencies among the variables to which they are connected, effectively capturing constraints that are potentially of a higher order. We then develop message-passing on the bipartite graph, forming a factor graph neural network that is trained to produce a floorplan that aligns with the desired requirements. Our approach is simple and generates layouts faithful to the user requirements, demonstrated by a large improvement in IOU scores over existing methods. Additionally, our approach, being inferential and accurate, is well-suited to the practical human-in-the-loop design process where specifications evolve iteratively, offering a practical and powerful tool for AI-guided design.

There is a rising interest in using artificial intelligence (AI)-powered safety analytics to predict accidents in the trucking industry. Companies may face the practical challenge, however, of not having enough data to develop good safety analytics models. Although pretrained models may offer a solution for such companies, existing safety research using transfer learning has mostly focused on computer vision and natural language processing, rather than accident analytics. To fill the above gap, we propose a pretrain-then-fine-tune transfer learning approach to help any company leverage other companies' data to develop AI models for a more accurate prediction of accident risk. We also develop SafeNet, a deep neural network algorithm for classification tasks suitable for accident prediction. Using the safety climate survey data from seven trucking companies with different data sizes, we show that our proposed approach results in better model performance compared to training the model from scratch using only the target company's data. We also show that for the transfer learning model to be effective, the pretrained model should be developed with larger datasets from diverse sources. The trucking industry may, thus, consider pooling safety analytics data from a wide range of companies to develop pretrained models and share them within the industry for better knowledge and resource transfer. The above contributions point to the promise of advanced safety analytics to make the industry safer and more sustainable.

Synaptic vesicle transport by motor proteins along microtubules is a crucial active process underlying neuronal communication. It is known that microtubules are destabilized by tau-hyperphosphorylation, which causes tau proteins to detach from microtubules and form neurofibril tangles. However, how tau-phosphorylation affects transport dynamics of motor proteins on the microtubule remains unknown. Here, we discover that long-distance unidirectional motion of vesicle-motor protein multiplexes (VMPMs) in living cells is suppressed under tau-hyperphosphorylation, with the consequent loss of fast vesicle-transport along the microtubule. The VMPMs in hyperphosphorylated cells exhibit seemingly bidirectional random motion, with dynamic properties far different from VMPM motion in normal cells. We establish a parsimonious physicochemical model of VMPM's active motion that provides a unified, quantitative explanation and predictions for our experimental results. Our analysis reveals that, under hyperphosphorylation conditions, motor-protein-multiplexes have both static and dynamic motility fluctuations. The loss of the fast vesicle-transport along the microtubule can be a mechanism of neurodegenerative disorders associated with tau-hyperphosphorylation.

The transportation industry, particularly the trucking sector, is prone to workplace accidents and fatalities. Accidents involving large trucks accounted for a considerable percentage of overall traffic fatalities. Recognizing the crucial role of safety climate in accident prevention, researchers have sought to understand its factors and measure its impact within organizations. While existing data-driven safety climate studies have made remarkable progress, clustering employees based on their safety climate perception is innovative and has not been extensively utilized in research. Identifying clusters of drivers based on their safety climate perception allows the organization to profile its workforce and devise more impactful interventions. The lack of utilizing the clustering approach could be due to difficulties interpreting or explaining the factors influencing employees' cluster membership. Moreover, existing safety-related studies did not compare multiple clustering algorithms, resulting in potential bias. To address these issues, this study introduces an interpretable clustering approach for safety climate analysis. This study compares 5 algorithms for clustering truck drivers based on their safety climate perceptions. It proposes a novel method for quantitatively evaluating partial dependence plots (QPDP). To better interpret the clustering results, this study introduces different interpretable machine learning measures (SHAP, PFI, and QPDP). Drawing on data collected from more than 7,000 American truck drivers, this study significantly contributes to the scientific literature. It highlights the critical role of supervisory care promotion in distinguishing various driver groups. The Python code is available at https://github.com/NUS-DBE/truck-driver-safety-climate.

Charge density waves are emergent quantum states that spontaneously reduce crystal symmetry, drive metal-insulator transitions, and precede superconductivity. In low-dimensions, distinct quantum states arise, however, thermal fluctuations and external disorder destroy long-range order. Here we stabilize ordered two-dimensional (2D) charge density waves through endotaxial synthesis of confined monolayers of 1T-TaS$_2$. Specifically, an ordered incommensurate charge density wave (oIC-CDW) is realized in 2D with dramatically enhanced amplitude and resistivity. By enhancing CDW order, the hexatic nature of charge density waves becomes observable. Upon heating via in-situ TEM, the CDW continuously melts in a reversible hexatic process wherein topological defects form in the charge density wave. From these results, new regimes of the CDW phase diagram for 1T-TaS$_2$ are derived and consistent with the predicted emergence of vestigial quantum order.

Efficient and accurate modelling in this region could improve safety, especially in emergency situations where high forces are required. To this end, we propose a novel family of tire force models based on neural ordinary differential equations and a neural-ExpTanh parameterization. These models are designed to satisfy physically insightful assumptions while also having sufficient fidelity to capture higher-order effects directly from vehicle state measurements. They are used as drop-in replacements for an analytical brush tire model in an existing nonlinear model predictive control framework. Experiments with a customized Toyota Supra show that scarce amounts of driving data -- less than three minutes -- is sufficient to achieve high-performance autonomous drifting on various trajectories with speeds up to 45mph. Comparisons with the benchmark model show a $4 \times$ improvement in tracking performance, smoother control inputs, and faster and more consistent computation time.

However, vehicle control near the limits of handling has many challenges, including robustly contending with tire force saturation, balancing model fidelity and computational efficiency, and coordinating inputs with the lower level chassis control system. This work studies Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for limit handling, specifically adapting to changing tire-road conditions and maximally allocating tire force utilization. We present a novel hierarchical framework that combines a single-track model with longitudinal weight transfer dynamics in the predictive control layer, with lateral brake distribution occurring at the chassis control layer. This vehicle model is simultaneously used in an Unscented Kalman Filter for online friction estimation. Comparative experiments on a full-scale vehicle operating on a race track at up to 95% of maximum tire force usage demonstrate the overall practical effectiveness of this approach.

Layered α-RuCl3 is a promising material to potentially realize the long-sought Kitaev quantum spin liquid with fractionalized excitations. While evidence of this exotic state has been reported under a modest in-plane magnetic field, such behavior is largely inconsistent with theoretical expectations of Kitaev phases emerging only in out-of-plane fields. These predicted field-induced states have been mostly out of reach due to the strong easy-plane anisotropy of bulk crystals, however. We use a combination of tunneling spectroscopy, magnetotransport, electron diffraction, and ab initio calculations to study the layer-dependent magnons, anisotropy, structure, and exchange coupling in atomically thin samples. Due to structural distortions, the sign of the average off-diagonal exchange changes in monolayer α-RuCl3, leading to a reversal of magnetic anisotropy to easy-axis. Our work provides a new avenue to tune the magnetic interactions in α-RuCl3 and allows theoretically predicted quantum spin liquid phases for out-of-plane fields to be more experimentally accessible.

Focusing on a more granular extension of the problem, we propose a Joint Triplet Loss Learning (JTLL) module for the Next New ($N^2$) POI recommendation task, which is more challenging. Our JTLL module first computes additional training samples from the users' historical POI visit sequence, then, a designed triplet loss function is proposed to decrease and increase distances of POI and user embeddings based on their respective relations. Next, the JTLL module is jointly trained with recent approaches to additionally learn unvisited relations for the recommendation task. Twisted 2D materials form complex moiré structures that spontaneously reduce symmetry through picoscale deformation within a mesoscale lattice. We show twisted 2D materials contain a torsional displacement field comprised of three transverse periodic lattice distortions (PLD). The torsional PLD amplitude provides a single order parameter that concisely describes the structural complexity of twisted bilayer moirés. Moreover, the structure and amplitude of a torsional periodic lattice distortion is quantifiable using rudimentary electron diffraction methods sensitive to reciprocal space. In twisted bilayer graphene, the torsional PLD begins to form at angles below 3.89° and the amplitude reaches 8 pm around the magic angle of 1.1°. At extremely low twist angles (e.g. below 0.25°) the amplitude increases and additional PLD harmonics arise to expand Bernal stacked domains separated by well defined solitonic boundaries. The torsional distortion field in twisted bilayer graphene is analytically described and has an upper bound of 22.6 pm. Similar torsional distortions are observed in twisted WS$_2$, CrI$_3$, and WSe$_2$ / MoSe$_2$.

However, as problems scale up, these exact algorithms fail to provide a solution in a reasonable time. To resolve this, current works look at utilizing deep learning to construct reasonable solutions. Such efforts have been very successful, but tend to be slow and compute intensive. This paper exemplifies the integration of entropic regularized optimal transport techniques as a layer in a deep reinforcement learning network. We show that we can construct a model capable of learning without supervision and inferences significantly faster than current autoregressive approaches. We also empirically evaluate the benefits of including optimal transport algorithms within deep learning models to enforce assignment constraints during end-to-end training.

Next destination recommendation is an important task in the transportation domain of taxi and ride-hailing services, where users are recommended with personalized destinations given their current origin location. However, recent recommendation works do not satisfy this origin-awareness property, and only consider learning from historical destination locations, without origin information. Thus, the resulting approaches are unable to learn and predict origin-aware recommendations based on the user's current location, leading to sub-optimal performance and poor real-world practicality. Hence, in this work, we study the origin-aware next destination recommendation task. We propose the Spatial-Temporal Origin-Destination Personalized Preference Attention (STOD-PPA) encoder-decoder model to learn origin-origin (OO), destination-destination (DD), and origin-destination (OD) relationships by first encoding both origin and destination sequences with spatial and temporal factors in local and global views, then decoding them through personalized preference attention to predict the next destination. Experimental results on seven real-world user trajectory taxi datasets show that our model significantly outperforms baseline and state-of-the-art methods.

Next Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation is a longstanding problem across the domains of Location-Based Social Networks (LBSN) and transportation. Recent Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based approaches learn POI-POI relationships in a local view based on independent user visit sequences. In this work, we propose a Spatial-Temporal-Preference User Dimensional Graph Attention Network (STP-UDGAT), a novel explore-exploit model that concurrently exploits personalized user preferences and explores new POIs in global spatial-temporal-preference (STP) neighbourhoods, while allowing users to selectively learn from other users. Hydrocarbon contamination plagues high-resolution and analytical electron microscopy by depositing carbonaceous layers onto surfaces during electron irradiation, which can render carefully prepared specimens useless. Increased specimen thickness degrades resolution with beam broadening alongside loss of contrast. The large inelastic cross-section of carbon hampers accurate atomic species detection. Oxygen and water molecules pose problems of lattice damage by chemically etching the specimen during imaging. These constraints on high-resolution and spectroscopic imaging demand clean, high-vacuum microscopes with dry pumps. Here, we present an open-hardware design of a high-vacuum manifold for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holders to mitigate hydrocarbon and residual species exposure. We quantitatively show that TEM holders are inherently dirty and introduce a range of unwanted chemical species. Overnight storage in our manifold reduces contaminants by 1-2 orders of magnitude and promotes 2-4 times faster vacuum recovery. A built-in bakeout system further reduces contaminants partial pressure to below $10^{-10}$ Torr (~4 orders of magnitude down from ambient storage) and alleviates monolayer adsorption during a typical TEM experiment. We determine that bakeout of TEM holder with specimen held therein is the optimal cleaning method. Our high-vacuum manifold design is published with open-source blueprints, parts list, and cost.

We report a measurement of the ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast}) = {\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B} \to D^* \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. The analysis utilizes a method where the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode, and the signal-side $τ$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast})= 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$ and $1.1$ standard deviations, respectively, while their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions within $1.2$ standard deviations.

Abstract:
We prove that the set of permutations sorted by a stack of depth $t \geq 3$ and an infinite stack in series has infinite basis, by constructing an infinite antichain. This answers an open question on identifying the point at which, in a sorting process with two stacks in series, the basis changes from finite to infinite.

In this paper we study data from financial markets using an information-theory tool that we call the normalised Mutual Information Rate and show how to use it to infer the underlying network structure of interrelations in foreign currency exchange rates and stock indices of 14 countries world-wide and the European Union. We first present the mathematical method and discuss about its computational aspects, and then apply it to artificial data from chaotic dynamics and to correlated random variates. Next, we apply the method to infer the network structure of the financial data. Particularly, we study and reveal the interrelations among the various foreign currency exchange rates and stock indices in two separate networks for which we also perform an analysis to identify their structural properties. Our results show that both are small-world networks sharing similar properties but also having distinct differences in terms of assortativity. Finally, the consistent relationships depicted among the 15 economies are further supported by a discussion from the economics view point.

The precise determination of the CKM matrix element $\left| V_{cb}\right|$ is important for carrying out tests of the flavour sector of the Standard Model. In this article we present a preliminary analysis of the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell$ decay mode and its charge conjugate, selected in events that contain a fully reconstructed $B$-meson, using 772 million $e^+ \, e^- \to Υ(4S) \to B \bar B$ events recorded by the Belle detector at KEKB. Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. We measure the total branching fraction $\mathcal{B}( \bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell ) = \left(4.95 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.22 \right) \times 10^{-2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic respectively. The value of $\left|V_{cb} \right|$ is determined to be $\left( 37.4 \pm 1.3 \right) \times 10^{-3}$. Both results are in good agreement with current world averages.

We propose a general approach for supervised learning with structured output spaces, such as combinatorial and polyhedral sets, that is based on minimizing estimated conditional risk functions. Given a loss function defined over pairs of output labels, we first estimate the conditional risk function by solving a (possibly infinite) collection of regularized least squares problems. A prediction is made by solving an inference problem that minimizes the estimated conditional risk function over the output space. We show that this approach enables, in some cases, efficient training and inference without explicitly introducing a convex surrogate for the original loss function, even when it is discontinuous. Empirical evaluations on real-world and synthetic data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in adapting to a variety of loss functions.

We report the first observation of the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from $Σ^0/\barΣ^0$ and $Λ_c^{\pm}$ decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

One $B$ meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic mode to determine the momentum of the lepton of the signal decay in the rest frame of the recoiling partner $B$ meson. We find no evidence of a signal and set upper limits on the order of $10^{-6}$.

Four angular observables, $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, $q^2$. We compare our results for $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ with Standard Model predictions including the $q^2$ region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called $P_5'$ anomaly.

Abstract:
We have searched for the decay B0 -> phi gamma using the full Belle data set of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. No signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0 -> phi gamma) < 1.0 x 10^{-7} at 90% confidence level. This is the most stringent limit on this decay mode to date.

We report inclusive and exclusive measurements for $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ production in $B$ decays. We measure $\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c1} X)$= $(3.03 \pm 0.05(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.24(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c2} X)$= $(0.70 \pm 0.06(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.10(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$. For the first time, $χ_{c2}$ production in exclusive $B$ decays in the modes $B^0 \to χ_{c2}π^- K^+$ and $B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ π^- K^+$ has been observed, along with first evidence for the $B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ K_S^0$ decay mode. For $χ_{c1}$ production, we report the first observation in the $B^+ \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K^+$, $B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K_S^0$ and $B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^0 π^- K^+$ decay modes. Using these decay modes, we observe a difference in the production mechanism of $χ_{c2}$ in comparison to $χ_{c1}$ in $B$ decays. In addition, we report searches for $X(3872)$ and $χ_{c1}(2P)$ in the $B^+ \to (χ_{c1} π^+ π^-) K^+$ decay mode. We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ using the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ ($\ell=e,μ$) based on 711 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-\to Υ(4S)$ data recorded by the Belle detector and containing $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs. One $B$ meson in the event is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode while the other, on the signal side, is partially reconstructed from a charged lepton and either a $D^+$ or $D^0$ meson in a total of 23 hadronic decay modes. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ is found to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^- \ell^+ ν_{\ell})=(2.31\pm 0.03(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst}))\%$. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parameterization of Caprini, Lelouch and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction $\mathcal{G}(1)=1.0541\pm 0.0083$ calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(40.12\pm 1.34)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_\mathrm{EW}$ is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parameterization of Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(41.10 \pm 1.14)\times 10^{-3}$.

We obtain ${\cal B}(B^0 \rightarrow ρ^+ ρ^-)=(28.3\pm 1.5\;(\rm stat) \pm 1.5\;(\rm syst))\times 10^{-6}$, $f_L = 0.988\pm 0.012\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.023\;(\rm syst)$, ${\cal A}_{CP} = 0.00\pm0.10\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.06\;(\rm syst)$, ${\cal S}_{CP} = -0.13\pm0.15\;(\rm stat ) \pm0.05\;(\rm syst).$ We perform an isospin analysis to constrain the CKM angle $φ_2$ and obtain two solutions with \begin{eqnarray} φ_{2} = (93.7\pm10.6)^{\circ},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} being most compatible with other Standard-Model based fits to the data.

Abstract:
We search for the process $B^0 \to π^- τ^+ ν_τ$ using the full Belle data set of $711\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$, corresponding to $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We reconstruct one $B$ meson in a hadronic decay and search for the $B^0 \to π^- τ^+ ν_τ$ process in the remainder of the event. No signi…

We reconstruct one $B$ meson in a hadronic decay and search for the $B^0 \to π^- τ^+ ν_τ$ process in the remainder of the event. No significant signal is observed and an upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to π^- τ^+ ν_τ) < 2.5 \times 10^{-4}$ is obtained at the $90\%$ confidence level.

We observe $19.8σ$ and $10.8σ$ excesses of events for the two decay modes and measure the branching fractions of $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{-}$ and $B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{*-}$ to be $(25.1\pm2.6\pm3.5)\times10^{-6}$ and $(33.6\pm6.3\pm4.4)\times10^{-6}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are not compatible with the predictions based on the generalized factorization approach. In addition, a threshold enhancement in the di-baryon ($p\barΛ$) system is observed, consistent with that observed in similar $B$ decays.

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a Dalitz analysis of $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays, for the first time using a model-independent method.
