The identification of the dependent components in multiple data sets is a fundamental problem in many practical applications. The challenge in these applications is that often the data sets are high-dimensional with few observations or available samples and contain latent components with unknown probability distributions. A novel mathematical formulation of this problem is proposed, which enables the inference of the underlying correlation structure with strict false positive control. In particular, the false discovery rate is controlled at a pre-defined threshold on two levels simultaneously. The deployed test statistics originate in the sample coherence matrix. The required probability models are learned from the data using the bootstrap. Local false discovery rates are used to solve the multiple hypothesis testing problem. Compared to the existing techniques in the literature, the developed technique does not assume an a priori correlation structure and work well when the number of data sets is large while the number of observations is small. In addition, it can handle the presence of distributional uncertainties, heavy-tailed noise, and outliers.

Constraints on Wilson coefficients are obtained from global fits to $B^+ \to π^+ \,μ^+μ^-$, $B^0_s\to \bar{K}^{*0}\, μ^+μ^-$, $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$, and radiative $B \to X_d \,γ$ decays data. The fits are consistent with the standard model but leave sizable room for new physics. Besides higher-statistics measurements and more data in theory-friendly bins of the dilepton mass, further complementary observables such as angular distributions of $B_s^0 \to \bar{K}^{*0}\,\ell^+ \ell^-$, $B \to ρ\,\ell^+ \ell^-$ or the baryonic modes $Ξ_b \to Σ\,\ell^+ \ell^-$, $Ω_b^- \to Ξ^- \, \ell^+ \ell^-$ are necessary to resolve the significant degeneracy in the fit for the semileptonic four-fermion operators. Assuming minimal quark flavor violation, the $b \to s$ global fit implies tight constraints on the $b \to d$ couplings, and hence allows to test this paradigm with improved data. Another benefit from $|Δb|=|Δd|=1$ processes is to shed light on the $B$-anomalies in $|Δb|=|Δs|=1$ modes from a new angle. Specifically, studies of lepton flavor-specific and dineutrino modes are informative on the lepton flavor structure. Rare $b \to d \, \ell \ell, ν\bar ν$ decays can be studied at high luminosity flavor facilities LHCb, Belle II, and a future $Z$-factory.

Rare $\vert Δc \vert=\vert Δu \vert=1$ processes uniquely probe flavor in the Standard Model and beyond from the up-type quark sector. Opportunities to search for BSM physics in charm arise from the severe GIM suppression which kills SM contributions to leptonic axial-vector contributions and suppresses CP violation. Semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons offer a variety of clean null test observables, featuring new physics effects which are even enhanced by resonance contributions. In particular, angular observables in three- and self-analyzing four-body baryon decays, such as $Λ_c\to p \ell^+\ell^-$ and $Ξ_c^+\toΣ^+(\to pπ^0)\ell^+\ell^-$, $Ξ_c^0\toΛ^0\,(\to p π^-)\ell^+\ell^-$ and $Ω_c^0\toΞ^0\,(\to Λ^{0} π^0)\ell^+\ell^-$ disentangle possible new physics effects in electromagnetic dipole couplings $C_7^{(\prime)}$ and (axial-)vector 4-fermion ones $C^{(\prime)}_{9\,(10)}$. There is sensitivity to BSM couplings as small as $\sim 0.01$.

$SU(2)_L$-invariance links charged dilepton $\bar q\,q^\prime\,\ell^+\,\ell^-$ and dineutrino $\bar q\, q^\prime\, \barν\,ν$ couplings. This connection can be established using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework, and allows to perform complementary experimental tests of lepton universality and charged lepton flavor conservation with flavor-summed dineutrino observables. We present a systematic global analysis of dineutrino modes $b \to q \,ν\bar ν$, $q=d,s$, and charged dilepton $b \to q \,\ell^+ \ell^-$ transitions. We derive improved or even entirely new limits on dineutrino branching ratios including decays $B^0 \to (K^0 , X_s)\, ν\bar ν$, $B_s \to φ\,ν\bar ν$ and $B^0 \to (π^0, ρ^0)\, ν\bar ν$ from dineutrino modes which presently are best constrained: $B^+ \to (K^+,π^+, ρ^+) \,ν\bar ν$ and $B^0 \to K^{*0} \,ν\bar ν$. Using SMEFT we obtain new flavor constraints from the dineutrino modes, which are stronger than the corresponding ones from charged dilepton rare $b$-decay or Drell-Yan data, for $e τ$ and $ττ$ final states, as well as for $μτ$ ones in $b \to s$ processes. The method also allows to put novel constraints on semileptonic four-fermion operators with top quarks. Implications for ditau modes $b \to s \, τ^+ τ^-$ and $b \to d \, τ^+ τ^-$ are worked out. Furthermore, the interplay between dineutrinos and charged dileptons allows for concrete, novel tests of lepton universality in rare $B$-decays. Performing a global fit to $b \to s \,μ^+ μ^-, \,s γ$ transitions we find that lepton universality predicts the ratio of the $B^0 \to K^{*0} \,ν\bar ν$ to $B^0 \to K^0 \,ν\bar ν$ ($B^+ \to K^+ \,ν\bar ν$) branching fractions to be within 1.7 to 2.6 (1.6 to 2.4) at $1\,σ$, a region that includes the standard model, and that can be narrowed with improved charged dilepton data. There is sizable room outside this region where universality is broken and that can be probed with the Belle II experiment. Using results of a fit to $B^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$, $B^0_s\to \bar{K}^{\ast 0}\,μ^+μ^-$ and $ B^+ \to π^+\, μ^+ μ^-$ data we obtain an analogous relation for $|Δb|=|Δd|=1$ transitions.

The problem of identifying regions of spatially interesting, different or adversarial behavior is inherent to many practical applications involving distributed multisensor systems. In this work, we develop a general framework stemming from multiple hypothesis testing to identify such regions. A discrete spatial grid is assumed for the monitored environment. The spatial grid points associated with different hypotheses are identified while controlling the false discovery rate at a pre-specified level. Measurements are acquired using a large-scale sensor network. We propose a novel, data-driven method to estimate local false discovery rates based on the spectral method of moments. Our method is agnostic to specific spatial propagation models of the underlying physical phenomenon. It relies on a broadly applicable density model for local summary statistics. In between sensors, locations are assigned to regions associated with different hypotheses based on interpolated local false discovery rates. The benefits of our method are illustrated by applications to spatially propagating radio waves.

We analyze rare charm baryon decays within the standard model and beyond. We identify all null test observables in unpolarized $Λ_c \to p \ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e, μ$ decays, and study the new physics sensitivities. We find that the longitudinal dilepton polarization fraction $F_L$ is sensitive to electromagnetic dipole couplings $C_{7}^{(\prime)}$, and to the right-handed 4-fermion vector coupling $C_{9}^\prime$. The forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{\rm FB}$, due to the GIM-suppression a standard model null test already, probes the left-handed axialvector 4-fermion coupling $C_{10}$; its CP-asymmetry, $A_{\rm FB}^{\rm CP}$, probes CP-violating phases in $C_{10}$. Physics beyond the standard model can induce branching ratios of dineutrino modes $Λ_c \to p ν\bar ν$ up to a few times $10^{-5}$, and one order of magnitude smaller if lepton flavor universality is assumed, while standard model rates are negligible. Charged lepton flavor violation allows for striking signals into $e^\pm μ^\mp$ final states, up to $10^{-6}$ branching ratios model-independently, and up to order $10^{-8}$ in leptoquark models. Related three-body baryon decays $Ξ_c \to Σ\ell \ell$, $Ξ_c \to Λ\ell \ell$ and $Ω_c \to Ξ\ell \ell$ offer similar opportunities to test the standard model with $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ transitions.

Rare charm decays offer the unique possibility to explore flavour-changing neutral-currents in the up-sector within the Standard Model and beyond. Due to the lack of effective methods to reliably describe its low energy dynamics, rare charm decays have been considered as less promising for long. However, this lack does not exclude the possibility to perform promising searches for New Physics per se, but a different philosophy of work is required. Exact or approximate symmetries of the Standard Model allow to construct clean null-test observables, yielding an excellent road to the discovery of New Physics, complementing the existing studies in the down-sector. In this review, we summarize the theoretical and experimental status of rare charm $|Δc|=|Δu|=1$ transitions, as well as opportunities for current and future experiments such as LHCb, Belle II, BES III, the FCC-ee and proposed tau-charm factories. We also use the most recent experimental results to report updated limits on lepton-flavour conserving and lepton-flavour violating Wilson coefficients.

We provide model-independent upper limits on branching ratios reaching few $\times 10^{-5}$ in the most general case of arbitrary lepton flavor structure, $\sim 10^{-5}$ for scenarios with charged lepton conservation and few $\times 10^{-6}$ assuming lepton universality. We also give upper limits in $Z^\prime$ and leptoquark models. The presence of light right-handed neutrinos can affect these limits, a possibility that can occur for lepton number violation at a TeV, and that can be excluded with an improved bound on $\mathcal{B}(D^0 \to \text{invisibles})$ at the level of $\sim 10^{-6}$, about two orders of magnitude better than the present one. Signatures of $c \to u ν\bar ν$ modes contain missing energy and are suited for experimental searches at $e^+ e^-$-facilities, such as BES III, Belle II and future $e^+ e^-$-colliders, such as the FCC-ee running at the $Z$.

Observation of direct CP-violation in hadronic decays, as in $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$, provides opportunities for $c \to u \,\ell^+ \ell^-$, $\ell=e,μ$ transitions, and vice versa. For the concrete case of flavorful, anomaly-free $Z^\prime$-models a NP-interpretation of $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$ suggests measurable CP-asymmetries in semileptonic decays such as $D \to π\, \ell^+ \ell^-$ or $D \to ππ\, \ell^+ \ell^-$. Conversely, an observation of CP-violation in $c \to u\, e^+ e^-$ or $c \to u\, μ^+ μ^-$ decays supports a NP--interpretation of $ΔA_{\text{CP}}$. Flavorful $U(1)^\prime$-extensions provide explicit U--spin and isospin breaking which can be probed in patterns of hadronic decays of charm mesons. In this article a new combinatorial interpretation and a generalisation of Dodgson polynomials are provided. This leads to two new identities that relate large sums of products of Dodgson polynomials to a much simpler expression involving powers of the Kirchhoff polynomial. These identities can be applied to the parametric integrand for quantum electrodynamics, simplifying it significantly. In recent years enormous progress has been made in perturbative quantum field theory by applying methods of algebraic geometry to parametric Feynman integrals for scalar theories. The transition to gauge theories is complicated not only by the fact that their parametric integrand is much larger and more involved. It is, moreover, only implicitly given as the result of certain differential operators applied to the scalar integrand $\exp(-Φ_Γ/Ψ_Γ)$, where $Ψ_Γ$ and $Φ_Γ$ are the Kirchhoff and Symanzik polynomials of the Feynman graph $Γ$. In the case of quantum electrodynamics we find that the full parametric integrand inherits a rich combinatorial structure from $Ψ_Γ$ and $Φ_Γ$. In the end, it can be expressed explicitly as a sum over products of new types of graph polynomials which have a combinatoric interpretation via simple cycle subgraphs of $Γ$.

The wavelength range is 90 nm to 140 nm, the spectral resolution is significantly better than lambda/(Delta lambda) = 10000, where Delta lambda is measured as FWHM of the instrumental profile. The effective area peaks at 1.3 cm^2 near 110 nm. The background is dominated by straylight from the Echelle grating and is about 15% in an extracted spectrum for spectra with a rather flat continuum. The internal accuracy of the wavelength calibration is better than +/- 0.005 nm.

Abstract:
We present a study of molecular hyrogen (H_2) in the SMC gas, based on space shuttle Far UV spectroscopy with ORFEUS and the Tuebingen echelle spectrograph, in the line of sight to the SMC star HD 5980. 17 absorption lines from the Lyman band have been analysed. Our line of sight crosses two clouds within the SMC. We detect a cool molecular component near +120 km/s, where the H_2 from the lowest…

We detect a cool molecular component near +120 km/s, where the H_2 from the lowest 3 rotational states (J<3) is found. For this cloud we derive an excitation temperature of 70 K, probably the kinetic temerature of the gas. The cloud is located in the SMC foreground.
Another SMC component is visible at +160 km/s. Here we find unblended H_2 absorption lines from levels 4 < J < 8. For this component we obtain an equivalent excitation temperature T > 2350 K and conclude that this cloud must be highly excited by strong UV radiation from its energetic environment. FUV high resolution spectra of 18 stars, particularly chosen to observe the interstellar medium (ISM), were obtained during the second ORFEUS-SPAS free flight space shuttle mission in December 1996. Among these were 6 objects with a distance to the galactic plane larger than 1 kpc, one SMC and 4 LMC stars. This selction of targets is part of the ORFEUS program to explore the galactic halo. As the most important tracer of the hot gas we analyzed the stronger component of the important O VI doublet in all our ISM spectra. We found an average N(O VI) x sin |b| = 3.5 x 10^14 /cm^2 on the lines of sight to the 4 LMC stars. Assuming an exponential distribution of O VI we calculated a midplane density n(o) of 2.07 x 10^-8 /cm^3 and a scle height h(o) of 5.50 kpc. (Research supported in part by the DARA)
