Three-dimensional quantum gravity according to ST modular bootstrap
Abstract: We combine the large-$c$ ST modular bootstrap equations with the Cardy formula for the asymptotic growth of the density of states to prove that any $2d$ unitary, compact, conformal field theory (CFT) with no higher spin conserved currents leads to conflicting inequalities whenever the entire spectrum of non-trivial primaries lies above the BTZ threshold. Modular Bootstrap, Elliptic Points, and Quantum Gravity
Abstract: The modular bootstrap program for 2d CFTs could be seen as a systematic exploration of the physical consequences of consistency conditions at the elliptic points and at the cusp of their toruspartition function. Quantum fluctuations of k-strings: A case study
Abstract: K strings in Yang-Mills theory can be considered as bound states of k elementary confining strings carrying one unit of colour flux. Current estimates of k-string tension sigma_k are very sensitive to the leading corrections due to quantum fluctuations of the string. In this study we address this problem by comparing Polyakov-Polyakov correlators in the fundamental representation (k=1) with the… ▽ More

Critical exponents for higher-representation sources in 3D SU(3) gauge theory from CFT
Abstract: We establish an exact map** between the multiplication table of the irreducible representations of SU(3) and the fusion algebra of the two-dimensional conformal field theory in the same universality class of 3D SU(3) gauge theory at the deconfining point. In this way the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture on the critical behaviour of Polyakov lines in the fundamental representation naturally extends t… ▽ More

Where is the confining string in random percolation
Abstract: The percolating phase of whatever random percolation process resembles the confining vacuum of a gauge theory in most respects, with a string tension having a well-behaved continuum limit, a non trivial glueball spectrum and a deconfinement transition at a well determined temperature T_c. Simple numerical experiments reveal an underlying, strongly fluctuating, confining string, with an internal… ▽ More

The functional form of open Wilson lines in gauge theories coupled to matter
Abstract: The open Wilson lines are gauge-invariant operators made with a gauge transporter along an open path saturated at the end-points with matter fields. Here it is shown that numerical experiments on 3D Z2 Higgs model provide useful guidance in addressing the problem of the functional form of their vacuum expectation values. It turns out they satisfy, as long as their size does not exceed the string… ▽ More

The glue-ball spectrum of pure percolation
Abstract: We present a high-precision numerical study of 3D random percolation viewed as a confining gauge theory. Using large correlation matrices among multiform Wilson loops we determine the low-lying masses in various spin channels.

Screening of sources in higher representations of SU(N) gauge theories at zero and finite temperature
Abstract: Completion of the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture in some (2+1) dimensional SU(N) gauge theories allows map** Polyakov loops in higher representations of the gauge group into suitable conformal operators of the corresponding 2D CFT. As a consequence, the critical exponents of the correlators of these Polyakov loops are determined. The functional form of these correlators suggests a general Ansatz t… ▽ More

The decay of unstable k-strings in SU(N) gauge theories at zero and finite temperature
Abstract: Sources in higher representations of SU(N) gauge theory at T=0 couple with apparently stable strings with tensions depending on the specific representation rather than on its N-ality. Similarly at the deconfining temperature these sources carry their own representation-dependent critical exponents. It is pointed out that in some instances one can evaluate exactly these exponents by fully exploit… ▽ More

k-strings and baryon vertices in SU(N) gauge theories
Abstract: It is pointed out that the sine law for the k-string tension emerges as the critical threshold below which the spatial Z_N symmetry of the static baryon potential is spontaneously broken. This result applies not only to SU(N) gauge theories, but to any gauge system with stable k-strings admitting a baryon vertex made with N sources in the fundamental representation. Some simple examples are work… ▽ More

Random percolation as a gauge theory
Abstract: Three-dimensional bond or site percolation theory on a lattice can be interpreted as a gauge theory in which the Wilson loops are viewed as counters of topological linking with random clusters. Beyond the percolation threshold large Wilson loops decay with an area law and show the universal shape effects due to flux tube quantum fluctuations like in ordinary confining gauge theories. Wilson loop… ▽ More

Overlap of the Wilson loop with the broken-string state
Abstract: Numerical experiments on most gauge theories coupled with matter failed to observe string-breaking effects while measuring Wilson loops only. We show that, under rather mild assumptions, the overlap of the Wilson loop operator with the broken-string state obeys a natural upper bound implying that the signal of string-breaking is in general too weak to be detected by the conventional updating alg… ▽ More
