Despite multiple efforts, there exist many unsolved fundamental problems related with detection and analysis of internal polarization structure and related phase transitions in ferroelectric domain walls. Their solution can be very important for the progress in domain wall nanoelectronics and related applications in advanced memories and other information technologies. Here, we theoretically study the features of phase transitions in the domain walls, which are potentially detectable by the scanning probe capacitance microwave microscopy. The finite element modelling based on the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory is performed for the capacitance changes related with the domain wall motion in a multiaxial ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$.

The physical nature of the ferroelectric (FE), ferrielectric (FEI) and antiferroelectric (AFE) phases, their coexistence and spatial distributions underpin the functionality of antiferrodistortive (AFD) multiferroics in the vicinity of morphotropic phase transitions. Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenology and a semi-microscopic four sublattice model (FSM), we explore the behavior of different AFE, FEI and FE long-range orderings and their coexistence at the morphotropic phase boundaries in FE-AFE-AFD multiferroics. These theoretical predictions are compared with the experimental observations for dense Bi1-yRyFeO3 ceramics, where R is Sm or La atoms with the fraction 0 < y< 0.25, as confirmed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM). These complementary measurements were used to study the macroscopic and nanoscopic transformation of the crystal structure with the do**. The comparison of the measured and calculated AFE/FE phase fractions demonstrate that the LGD-FSM approach well describes the experimental results obtained by XRD and PFM for Bi1-yRyFeO3. Hence, this combined theoretical and experimental approach provides further insight into the origin of the morphotropic boundaries and coexisting FE and AFE states in model rare-earth doped multiferroics.

Tunability of polar and semiconducting properties of low-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have propelled them to the forefront of fundamental and applied physical research. These materials can vary from non-polar to ferroelectric, and from direct-band semiconductor to metallic. However, in addition to classical controls such as composition, do**, and field effect in TMDs the additional degrees of freedom emerge due to the curvature-induced electron redistribution and associated changes in electronic properties. Here we numerically explore the elastic and electric fields, flexoelectric polarization and free charge density for a TMD nanoflake placed on a rough substrate with a sinusoidal profile of the corrugation using finite element modelling. Numerical results for different flake thickness and corrugation depth yield insight into the flexoelectric nature of the out-of-plane electric polarization and establish the unambiguous correlation between the polarization and static conductivity modulation caused by inhomogeneous elastic strains coupled with deformation potential and strain gradients, which evolve in TMD nanoflake due to the adhesion between the flake surface and corrugated substrate. We revealed a pronounced maximum at the thickness dependences of the electron and hole conductivity of MoS2 and MoTe2 nanoflakes placed on a metallic substrate, which opens the way for their geometry optimization towards significant improvement their polar and electronic properties, necessary for their advanced applications in nanoelectronics and memory devices.Specifically, obtained results can be useful for elaboration of nanoscale straintronic devices based on the bended MoS2, MoTe2 and MoSTe nanoflakes, such as diodes and bipolar transistors with a bending-controllable sharpness of p-n junctions.

We developed a Landau type theory for the description of polar phenomena in low-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), specifically exploring flexoelectric origin of the polarization induced by a spontaneous bending and by inversion symmetry breaking due to the interactions with substrate. We consider the appearance of the spontaneous out-of-plane polarization due to the flexoelectric coupling with the strain gradient of the spontaneous surface rippling and surface-induced piezoelectricity. Performed calculations proved that the out-of-plane spontaneous polarization, originated from flexoelectric effect in a rippled TMD, is bistable and reversible by a non-uniform electric field. In contrast, the spontaneous polarization induced by a misfit strain and symmetry-sensitive surface-induced piezoelectric coupling, cannot be reversed by an external electric field. The special attention is paid to the spectral analysis of the linear dielectric susceptibility and gain factor, which enhancement is critically important for the observation of the polar phenomena in low-dimensional TMDs by the surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopy.

Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory and effective medium approximation, we analytically calculate typical dependences of the pyroelectric and electrocaloric coefficients on external electric field, temperature and radius for spherical single-domain ferroelectric nanoparticles. The considered physical model corresponds to the nanocomposite with small fraction of ferroelectric nanoparticles. Within the framework of the analytical model we establish how the size changes determine the temperature and field behavior pyroelectric and electrocaloric coefficients on example of BaTiO3 nanoparticles covered by a semiconducting shell and placed in a dielectric polymer. We show that by changing the particle size one can induce maxima of the pyroelectric coefficient and electrocaloric temperature variation, control their width, height and sign. Obtained analytical expressions allow selecting the interval of particle sizes, voltage, and/or temperature for which pyroelectric energy conversion and electrocaloric coefficient are optimal for applications. The observed size effect opens the possibility to control pyroelectric and electrocaloric properties of ferroelectric nanocomposites that can be important for their advanced applications in energy convertors and cooling systems.

Recent observations of unusual ferroelectricity in thin films of HfO_2 and related materials have attracted broad interest to the materials and led to the emergence of a number of competing models for observed behaviors. Here we develop the electrochemical mechanism of observed ferroelectric-like behaviors, namely the collective phenomena of elastic and electric dipoles originated from oxygen vacancies formation in the vicinity of film surfaces, as well as from grain boundaries and other types of inhomogeneities inside the film. The ferroelectric phase is induced by the "electrochemical" coupling, that is the joint action of the omnipresent electrostriction and "chemical" pressure, which lead to the sign change of the positive coefficient alfa in the quadratic term alfa*P^2 in the order-disorder type thermodynamic functional depending on polarization P. Negative coefficient alfa becomes the driving force of the transition to the long-range ordered ferroelectric phase with the spontaneous polarization P in the direction normal to the film surface. Using the above ideas, we estimated that the reversible ferroelectric polarization, as high as (0.05 - 0.2) C/m^2, can be induced by oxygen vacancies in HfO_2 films of thickness less than (20 - 30) nm. Semi-quantitative agreement with available experimental data is demonstrated.

The strong influence of RM, RE and ME couplings on the physical properties and phase diagrams including antiferromagnetic (AFM), ferroelectric (FE) and structural AFD phases has been revealed in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory, as well as the prediction of novel (double and triple) multiferroic phases has been demonstrated.
In the review we are especially focused on (a) the possibility to induce FM (FE) phase in EuTiO3 (as well as in other paraelectric AFM oxides) by the application of an electric (magnetic) field due to the ME coupling; (b) the analysis of the size effects and novel phases in EuxSr1-xTiO3 nanosystems, where the LGD predicts the presence of the triple AFD-FE-FM(AFM) phase at low temperatures; (c) the appearance of improper spontaneous polarization and pyroelectricity in the vicinity of antiphase domain boundaries, structural twin walls, surfaces and interphases in the AFD phase of non-ferroelectric SrTiO3 induced by the flexoelectricity and rotostriction; (d) the occurrence of low symmetry monoclinic phase with in-plane FE polarization in thin strained EuxSr1-xTiO3 films and its stabilization over wide temperature range by AFD oxygen octahedron tilts due to flexoelectric and rotostriction coupling; (e) discussion of a surprisingly strong size-induced increase of AFM transition temperature caused by the joint action of RM coupling with elastic stress accumulated in the intergrain spaces of BiFeO3 dense ceramics.

The consideration of oxygen vacancies influence on the relaxors with perovskite structure was considered in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenological theory. The theory applicability for relaxors is based on the existence of some hidden soft phonon polar mode in them, and its frequency could be zero at some negative temperature TC*. Main attention was paid to PZN-PLZT relaxor described by formula 0.3Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.7(Pb0.96La0.04(ZrxTi1-x)0.99O3) with x = 0.52, where earlier experimental investigation of oxygen vacancies influence on the polar properties was performed and the evidence of oxygen vacancies induced ferroelectricity was obtained. Since the oxygen vacancies are known to be elastic dipoles, they influence upon elastic and electric fields due to Vegard and flexoelectric coupling. We include the vacancies elastic and electrostrictive contribution into free energy functional. The calculations of the vacancies impact on polar properties were performed using their concentration distribution function. It was shown that the negative Curie temperature of a relaxor TC* is renormalized by the elastic dipoles due to the electrostrictive coupling and can become positive at some large enough concentration of the vacancies. We calculated the local polarization and electric field induced by the flexo-chemical coupling in dependence on the concentration of oxygen vacancies. The coexistence of FE phase and relaxor state can take place because of inhomogeneity of vacancies concentration distribution.

Complementary we performed experiments for dense BiFeO3 ceramics, which revealed that the shift of antiferromagnetic transition to 690 K instead of 645 K for a single crystal. To explain theoretically the result, we consider the possibility to control antiferromagnetic state of multiferroic BiFeO3 via biquadratic antiferrodistortive rotomagnetic, rotoelectric, magnetostrictive and magnetoelectric couplings. According to our calculations the highest is the rotostriction contribution, the magnetostrictive and electrostriction contributions appeared smaller.

Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, we considered the impact of the flexoelectro-chemical coupling on the size effects inpolar properties and phase transitions of thin ferroelectric films with a layer of elastic defects. We investigated a typical case, when defects fill a thin layer below the top film surface with a constant concentration creating an additional gradient of elastic fields. The defective surface of the film is not covered with an electrode, but instead with an ultra-thin layer of ambient screening charges, characterized by a surface screening length. This geometry is typical for the scanning probe piezoelectric force microscopy. Obtained results revealed an unexpectedly strong effect of the joint action of Vegard stresses and flexoelectric effect (shortly flexo-chemical coupling) on the ferroelectric transition temperature, distribution of the spontaneous polarization and elastic fields, domain wall structure and period in thin PbTiO3 films containing a layer of elastic defects. A nontrivial result is the ferroelectricity persisting at film thicknesses below 4 nm, temperatures lower than 350 K and relatively high surface screening length (~0.1 nm). The origin of this phenomenon is the re-building of the domain structure in the film (namely the cross-over from c-domain stripes to a-type closure domains) when its thickness decreases below 4 nm, conditioned by the flexoelectric coupling and facilitated by negative Vegard effect. For positive Vegard effect, thicker films exhibit the appearance of pronounced maxima on the thickness dependence of the transition temperature, whose position and height can be controlled by the defect type and concentration. The revealed features may have important implications for miniaturization of ferroelectric-based devices.

Using the Landau Ginzburg Devonshire theory and scalar approximation, we derived analytical expressions for the singular points (zeros, complex ranges) of the acoustic phonon mode (A mode) frequency in dependence on the wave vector k and examined the conditions of the soft A modes appearance in a ferroelectric depending on the magnitude of the flexoelectric coefficient f and temperature T. We predict that if the magnitude of the flexocoefficient f is equal to the temperature-dependent critical value fcr(T) at the temperature T=T_IC, the A mode frequency tends to zero at k=kr_0 and the spontaneous polarization becomes spatially modulated in a temperature range T<T_IC.The comparison of calculated physical properties with measured ones are performed for some ferroelectrics with SMP phases. In particular, temperature dependence of the calculated direct and inverse static dielectric susceptibility is in an agreement with experimental data in Sn2P2(SexS1-x)6 that gives us additional background to predict flexo-coupling induced soft acoustic amplitudon-type mode in the SMP phase. The available experimental data on neutron scattering in organic incommensurate ferroelectric (CH3)3NCH2COO*CaCl2*2H2O are in a semi-quantitative agreement with our theoretical results. To quantify the theory, it is necessary to measure the frequency dependence of the A mode in a uniaxial ferroelectric with a spatially modulated phase in the temperature interval near its occurrence.

Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) is one of the most promising multiferroics with a sufficiently high ferroelectric (FE) and antiferromagnetic transition temperatures, and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling coefficient at room temperature, and thus it is highly sensitive to the impact of cross-influence of applied electric and magnetic fields. According to the urgent demands of nanotechnology miniaturization for ultra-high density data storage in advanced nonvolatile memory cells, it is very important to reduce the sizes of multiferroic nanoparticles in the self-assembled arrays without serious deterioration of their properties. We study size effects of the phase diagrams, FE and ME properties of semi-ellipsoidal BiFeO3 nanoparticles clamped to a rigid conductive substrate. The spatial distribution of the spontaneous polarization vector inside the nanoparticles, phase diagrams and paramagnetoelectric (PME) coefficient were calculated in the framework of modified Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach. Analytical expressions were derived for the dependences of the FE transition temperature, average polarization, linear dielectric susceptibility and PME coefficient on the particle sizes for a general case of a semi-ellipsoidal nanoparticles with three different semi-axes a, b and height c. The analyses of the obtained results leads to the conclusion that the size effect of the phase diagrams, spontaneous polarization and PME coefficient is rather sensitive to the particle sizes aspect ratio in the polarization direction, and less sensitive to the absolute values of the sizes per se.

The physical processes taking place at the surface and near the surface of solids is so rich and versatile that sometimes they seem to be the inexhaustible subject of fundamental research. In particular, since the discovery by Lord Rayleigh surface waves in solids focus increased attention of scientists, because their experimental and theoretical studies can serve as the source of unique information about the surface impact on the dynamics and structure of the atomic lattice, structural instabilities and phase transitions induced by the surface, and explore the properties of phonons in spatially-confined systems The existence of purely shear surface wave is impossible in non-piezoelectrics within the framework of the classical theory of elasticity, because the Rayleigh surface waves have different polarization and are the mixture of shear and dilatational waves. We showed that the "forbidden" shear surface wave (shortly Flexo-SW) can propagate near the surface of all crystalline dielectrics due to the omnipresent flexoelectric coupling. The appearance and penetration depth of the Flexo-SW is ruled by the flexocoupling strength. In particular the penetration depth of transverse acoustic mode diverges in the absence of the flexoelectric coupling and so these waves become indistinguishable from the bulk waves. For paraelectrics such as strontium titanate with typical flexoeletric coefficients (~2V) the penetration depth of the Flexo-SW can reach more than tens microns at THz frequencies. The circumstances can explain the absence of experimental observations of the missed surface waves in thick layers and bulk materials. However we predict that the peaks of neutron intensity corresponding to the surface Flexo-SW and bulk phonon modes can be separated in non-piezoelectric thin films of thickness ~(20 - 50)nm.

Flexocoupling impact on the size effects of the spontaneous polarization, effective piezo-response, elastic strain and compliance, carrier concentration and piezo-conductance have been calculated in thin films of ferroelectric semiconductors with mixed-type conductivity under applied pressure. Analysis of the self-consistent calculation results revealed that the thickness dependences of aforementioned physical quantities, calculated at zero and nonzero flexoelectric couplings, are very similar under zero applied pressure, but become strongly different under the application of external pressure pext. At that the differences become noticeably stronger for the film surface under compression than under tension. The impact of the Vegard mechanism on the size effects is weaker in comparison with flexocoupling except for the thickness dependence of the piezo-conductance. Without flexoelectric coupling the studied physical quantities manifest conventional peculiarities that are characteristic of the size-induced phase transitions. Namely, when the film thickness h approaches the critical thickness hcr the transition to paraelectric phase occurs. The combined effect of flexoelectric coupling and external pressure induces polarizations at the film surfaces, which cause the electric built-in field that destroys the thickness-induced phase transition to paraelectric phase at h= hcr and induces the electret-like state with irreversible spontaneous polarization at h<hcr. The built-in field leads to noticeable increase of the average strain and elastic compliance under the film thickness decrease below hcr that scales as 1/h at small thicknesses h. The changes of the electron concentration by several orders of magnitude under positive or negative pressures can lead to the occurrence of high- or low-conductivity states, i.e. the nonvolatile piezo-resistive switching.

We explore the impact of the flexoelectric effect and Vegard effect (chemical pressure) on the phase diagrams, long-range polar order and related physical properties of the spherical ferroelectric nanoparticles using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenological approach. The synergy of these effects can lead to the remarkable changes of the nanoparticles' phase diagrams. In particular, a commonly expected transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric phase at some small critical size is absent; so that the critical size loses its sense. Contrary, the stabilization of the ferroelectric phase manifests itself by the enhancement of the transition temperature and polarization with the particle size decrease. Ferroelectric phase reentrant phenomenon was observed earlier in the tetragonal BaTiO3 nanospheres of radii 5-50 nm [Zhu et al., JAP 112, 064110 (2012)] and stayed unexplained up to now. Our calculations have shown the physical mechanism of the exciting phenomenon is the flexo-chemo-effect. Since the spontaneous flexoelectric coupling, as well as ion vacancies, should exist in any nanostructured ferroelectrics, obtained analytical results can be valid for many nanoferroelectrics, where reentrant phases appearance can be forecasted.

We performed calculations of temperature, composition and external field dependence of ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases transition temperatures, remanent polarization, magnetization, hysteresis loops, coercive fields, dielectric permittivity and magnetoelectric coupling. Special attention was paid to comparison of the developed theory with experiments. It appeared possible to describe adequately the main experimental results including a reasonable agreement between the shape of calculated hysteresis loops and remnant polarization value with measured loops and polarization. Information about linear and nonlinear magnetoelectric coupling coefficients was extracted from the experimental data. From the fitting of experimental data with theoretical formula it appeared possible to obtain composition dependence of Curie-Weiss constant that is known to be inversely proportional to harmonic (linear) dielectric stiffness, as well as the strong nonlinear dependence of anharmonic parameters of free energy. Kee** in mind the essential influence of these parameters on the multiferroic properties the obtained results open the way to govern practically all the material properties with the help of suitable choice of composition. The forecast of the strong enough influence of antiferrodistortive order parameter on the transition temperatures and so on the phase diagrams and properties of multiferroics is made on the basis of the developed theory.

Using the theory of symmetry and the microscopic model we predicted the possibility of a linear roto-antiferromagnetic effect in the perovskites with structural antiferrodistortive and antiferromagnetic long-range ordering and found the necessary conditions of its occurrence. The main physical manifestations of this effect are the smearing of the antiferromagnetic transition and the jump of the specific heat near it. In the absence of external fields linear roto-antiferromagnetic coupling can induce a weak antiferromagnetic ordering above the Neel temperature, but below the temperature of antiferrodistortive transition. Therefore, there is the possibility of observing weak antiferromagnetism in multiferroics such as bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) at temperatures T>TN, for which the Neel temperature TN is about 645 K, and the antiferrodistortive transition temperature is about 1200 K. By quantitative comparison with experiment we made estimations of the linear roto-antiferromagnetic effect in the solid solutions of multiferroic Bi1-xRxFeO3 (R=La, Nd).

Within the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) phenomenological theory we consider the possibility to control properties of paraelectric antiferromagnets via biquadratic rotomagnetic coupling with and without external magnetic and electric field application. We use EuTiO3 as a prototype with relatively well-known material parameters. Surprisingly strong influence of this coupling practically on all the properties without external fields was obtained in the temperature region with coexistence of antiferromagnetic and antiferrodistorted phases i.e. in multiferroic state. In particular, the observed Neel temperature TN (5.5 K) was shown to be defined by rotomagnetic coupling, while without this coupling TN appeared to be much higher (26 K). For small or high enough rotomagnetic coupling constant value the antiferromagnetic phase transition order appeared to be the second or the first order respectively. The essential influence of rotomagnetic coupling on the form and value of magnetic and dielectric permittivity was also forecasted. The rotomagnetic coupling along with rotoelectric one opens the additional way to control the form of the phase diagrams by application of external magnetic or electric field. The critical value of the electric field (for antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition) appeared essentially smaller than the one calculated without rotomagnetic coupling that can be important for applications.

In the framework of Landau--Ginzburg--Devonshire (LGD) phenomenological theory, the influence of misfit strains, surface energy, and finite-size effects on phase diagrams, polar properties, and hysteresis loops has been calculated for multilayered thin films of the type ferroelectric/virtual ferroelectric. The influence of elastic deformations that arise at the interface thin film--substrate owing to a mismatch between the lattice constants in the film and the substrate on the phase diagrams of multilayered thin films virtual ferroelectric SrTiO$_{3}$/ferroelectric BaTiO$_{3}$ has been studied for the first time. In contrast to bulk BaTiO$_{3}$, in which only four phases (cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, and rhombohedral) can exist, it turned out that six thermodynamically stable BaTiO$_{3}$ phases (paraelectric phase and tetragonal (FEc), two monoclinic (FEaac and FEac), and two orthorhombic (FEa and FEaa) ferroelectric phases) can exist in multilayered SrTiO$_{3}$/BaTiO$_{3}$ films. The main polar properties of hysteresis loops (shape, coercive field, and spontaneous polarization) in thin multilayered SrTiO$_{3}$/BaTiO$_{3}$ films are calculated. It is shown that the system demonstrates a strong dependence of its polar properties on the thickness of SrTiO$_{3}$ and BaTiO$_{3}$ layers, as well as on the elastic misfit strains, with SrTiO$_{3}$ playing the role of dielectric layer: the thicker the layer, the stronger is the depolarization field, which, in its turn, reduces the spontaneous polarization in the BaTiO$_{3}$ film.

The phase diagram of a quantum paraelectric antiferromagnet EuTiO3 under an external electric field was calculated using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. It was shown that the application of an external electric field E leads to the appearance of a ferromagnetic phase due to the magnetoelectric coupling. In particular, electric field application decreases the transition temperature TAFM to antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase and induces ferromagnetic (FM) phase, so that at some E field larger than the critical field (Ecr), TFM becomes higher than TAFM and the FM phase appears. Note that Ecr increases and magnetization decreases as the temperature increases. The value of the critical field Ecr = 0.40*10^6 V/cm we calculated appeared close to the value Ecr = 0.5*10^6 V/cm obtained recently by Ryan et al. with the help of density functional theory for EuTiO3 film under a compressive strain produced by substrate. At the fields E >0.83*10^6 V/cm, AFM disappears for all considered temperatures and so FM becomes the only stable magnetic phase. We find that ferromagnetic phase can be induced by an E-field in other paraelectric antiferromagnet oxides with a positive AFM-type magnetoelectric (ME) coupling coefficient and negative FM-type ME coupling coefficient. In particular, the critical E-field was estimated for another paraelectric antiferromagnet Sr0.7Ba0.3MnO3 as 0.2x10^5V/cm at 0 K. Analysis of the dependence of magnetization and antimagnetization on the external electric field and the polarization induced by the field, which yields the magnetoelectric coupling, is reported. The results show the possibility to control multiferroicity, including the FM and AFM phases, with help of an electric field application.

In biaxially tensile strained films, we discover the presence of a low symmetry monoclinic phase with in-plane ferroelectric polarization that is stabilized by antiferrodistortive oxygen octahedra tilts. The monoclinic phase is stable in a wide temperature range, and is characterized by the large number of energetically equivalent polar and structural twin domains, which stimulates easy twinning of the film and thus enhances its effective piezoelectric response. The flexoelectric coupling and rotostriction give rise to additional spontaneous polarization, piezo- and pyro-electricity in the ferroelastic twin boundaries.

We calculated EuxSr1-xTiO3 bulk and nanosystem phase diagrams, which include the antiferrodistortive, ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. Our calculation shows the presence of "triple" antiferrodistortive-ferroelectric-ferromagnetic phases for EuxSr1-xTiO3 nanowires and nanotubes. presents interest for fundamental study and can be important for their potential applications. Since the triple phase exists at low temperatures (<10 K) with high polarization and magnetization values (~50 muC/cm2 and ~0.5 MA/m2). Therefore, the strong coupling between structural distortions, polarization and magnetization suggest the EuxSr1-xTiO3 nanosystems as strong candidates for possible miltiferroic applications.

We predicted the ferroelectric-ferromagnetic multiferroic properties of EuTiO3 nanowires and generated the phase diagrams in coordinates of temperature and wire radii. The calculations were performed within the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory with phenomenological parameters extracted from tabulated experimental data and first principles calculations. Since bulk EuTiO3 is antiferromagnetic at temperatures lower than 5.5 K and paraelectric at all temperatures, our goal was to investigate the possibility of inducing the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties of EuTiO3 by reducing the bulk to nanosystems. Our results indicate that ferroelectric spontaneous polarization of ~0.1-0.5C/m2 is induced in EuTiO3 nanowires due to the intrinsic surface stress, which is inversely proportional to the nanowire radius. The spontaneous polarization exists at temperatures lower than 300 K, for the wire radius less than 1 nm and typical surface stress coefficients ~ 15 N/m. Due to the strong biquadratic magnetoelectric coupling, the spontaneous polarization in turn induces the ferromagnetic phase at temperatures lower than 30 K for 2 nm nanowire, and at temperatures lower than 10 K for 4 nm nanowire in EuTiO3. Thus we predicted that the EuTiO3 nanowires can be the new ferroelectric-ferromagnetic multiferroic.

Using the symmetry theory we analyze of the flexomagnetic effect in all 90 magnetic classes and showed that 69 of them are flexomagnetic. Then we explore how the symmetry breaking, inevitably present in the vicinity of the surface, changes the local symmetry and thus the form of the flexomagnetic tensors. All possible surface magnetic classes (in the number of 19) were obtained from the 90 bulk magnetic classes for the surface cuts 001, 010 and 100 types. It appeared that all 90 bulk magnetic classes become flexomagnetic, piezomagnetic and piezoelectric in the vicinity of surface. Using the free energy approach, we show that the flexomagnetic effect leads to a new type of flexo-magnetoelectric (FME) coupling in nanosized and bulk materials, in all spatial regions, where the polarization and (anti)magnetization vectors are spatially inhomogeneous due to external or internal forces. The linear FME coupling, proportional to the product of the gradients of (anti)magnetization and polarization, flexoelectric and flexomagnetic tensors, is significant in nanosized ferroelectrics-(anti)ferromagnetics, where gradients of the polarization and magnetization obligatory exist. The spontaneous FME coupling induced by the spatial confinement give rise to the size-dependent linear magnetoelectric coupling in nanosized ferroelectrics-(anti)ferromagnetics.
We show that the flexomagnetic effect may lead to improper ferroelectricity in bulk (anti)ferromagnetics via the linear and nonlinear FME coupling. Inhomogeneous spontaneous polarization is induced by the (anti)magnetization gradient, which exists in all spatial regions, where polarization varies and (anti)magnetization vector changes its direction. The gradient can be induced by the surface influence as well as by external strain via e.g. the sample bending.

Consideration of randomly distributed magnetic spins (S=1) had shown that magnetic properties of incipient ferroelectric nanoparticles are strongly size and temperature dependent due to the size and temperature dependence of their dielectric permittivity and the effective Bohr radius proportional to permittivity. The phase diagrams in coordinates temperature - particle radius are considered. In particular, for particle radii less that the critical radius ferromagnetic long-range order appears in a shell region of thickness 5 - 50 nm once the concentration of magnetic defects exceeds the magnetic percolation threshold. The critical radius is calculated in the mean field theory from the condition of the magnetic defects exchange energy equality to thermal energy. For particle radii higher than critical value only the paramagnetic phase is possible. The conditions of the super-paramagnetic state appearance in the assembly of nanoparticles with narrow distribution function of their sizes are discussed also.

Using the quantum-mechanical approach combined with the image charge method we calculated the lowest energy levels of the impurities and neutral vacancies with two electrons or holes located in the vicinity of flat surface of different solids. We obtained that the magnetic triplet state is the ground state of the impurities and neutral vacancies in the vicinity of surface, while the nonmagnetic singlet is the ground state in the bulk for e.g. He atom, Li+, Be++, etc. ions. The energy difference between the lowest triplet and singlet states strongly depends on the electron (hole) effective mass, dielectric permittivity of the solid and the distance from the surface. Pair interaction of the identical surface defects (two doubly charged impurities or vacancies with two electrons or holes) reveals the ferromagnetic spin state with the maximal exchange energy at the definite distance between the defects (~5-25 nm). We obtained that the nonmagnetic singlet state is the lowest one for a molecule with two electrons formed by a pair of identical surface impurities (like surface hydrogen), while its next state with deep enough negative energy minimum is the magnetic triplet. The metastable magnetic triplet state appeared for such molecule at the surface indicates the possibility of metastable orto-states of the hydrogen-like molecules, while they are absent in the bulk of material. We hope that obtained results could provide an alternative mechanism of the room temperature ferromagnetism observed in TiO2, HfO2, and In2O3 thin films with contribution of the oxygen vacancies.

The symmetry breaking inevitably present in the vicinity of any surface, namely an inversion center disappears in surface normal direction and only axes and planes normal to the surface conserve, gives rise to the spontaneous piezomagnetic, piezoelectric and magnetoelectric effects in nanosystems, while the effects can be absent in a bulk material. All these phenomena are inherent to nanos made of materials belonging to all ninety bulk magnetic classes. Therefore the new linear magnetoelectrics should appear among nanomaterials, nonpiezomagnetic and nonpiezoelectric in the bulk. To demonstrate this we consider the typical cases of ultra-thin films, nanowires and nanospheres. Coupled with a surface stress for nanoparticles and a mismatch strains for thin films on substrates the surface piezomagnetic and piezoelectric effects lead to the appearance of built-in magnetic and electric fields respectively. The built-in fields play an important role in the appearance of self-magnetization and self-polarization in the nanosystems paramagnetic and paraelectric in the bulk and can lead to the appearance of some other interesting properties absent in the bulk. We obtained analytical dependencies on sizes for the built-in fields and magnetoelectric coupling coefficients. The values of the built-in fields increase with the decrease of film thickness h or nanoparticles radii R as ~1/h or 1/R2 respectively, while the magnetoelectric coupling is inversely proportional to the sizes in both cases. This shows the strong influence of sizes on the considered properties of nanos and so opens the ways to govern the properties by the choice of the sizes and to create new multifunctional nanomaterials.

In the paper we present analytical calculations of the profiles and average values correlation radius of polarization fluctuations and generalized susceptibility in thin ferroelectric films of thickness L with in-plane (a-films) and out-of-plane (c-films) polarization orientation. The contribution of polarization gradient, surface energy and depolarization field (if any) were taken into account. For the second order ferroelectrics the correlation radius and generalized susceptibility diverge at the film critical thickness Lcr as anticipated. In the case of a-films where depolarization field is absent, the surface energy and polarization gradient govern the size effects such as thickness-induced phase transition, corresponding correlation radius and generalize susceptibility divergence in the phase transition point. In the case of c-films with strong depolarization field, the surface energy, polarization gradient, intrinsic depolarization effect related with polarization inhomogeneous distribution and incomplete screening in the electrodes determine the correlation radius and generalized susceptibility size effect. At that contribution of all the factors are comparable at reasonable material parameters, but could be easily tuned by varying of surface energy coefficients, polarization gradient contribution and screening conditions.

Exact solution for the spatially inhomogeneous mechanical displacement vector allowing for flexo-coupling contribution was found for nanowires and thin pills. Strong influence of flexo-effect in nanorods and thin pills leads to the displacements of the atoms resulting into the unit cell symmetry changes, which lead to the phase transition temperature shift, as well as the flat geometry in radial direction transforms into the saucer-like one. The new phenomena can be considered as true manifestation of the spontaneous flexo-effect existence. It was shown that flexo-effect leads to (a) the appearance of new linear and nonlinear contribution and renormalization of coefficients before the order parameter gradient, (b) essentially influences the transition temperature, piezoelectric response and the spatial distribution of the order parameter, (c) results in renormalization of extrapolation length in the boundary conditions.

The giant magnetoelectric coupling, size effects and misfit strain cause strong changes of ferroic films phase diagrams at zero external magnetic and electric fields, in particular, the transformation of antiferromagnetic phase into ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic ones for compressive or tensile misfit strains correspondingly as well as thickness induced paramagnetic or/and paraelectric phases appearance. Ferromagnetism appearance and magnetoelectric coupling increase in thin ferroelectric-antiferromagnetic films is in agreement with available experimental data and opens the way for tailoring of ferroic films magnetic and electric properties.

We show that the presence of free carriers in a substance can generate the multiferroic behavior. Namely, if the substance has mixed-valence ions, which can supply free carriers and have electric dipole and spin moments, all three types of long-range order (ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and magnetoelectric (ME)) can occur at low temperature. The physical origin of the effect is that charge carriers can mediate the multiferroic behavior via spin - spin (RKKY), dipole-dipole and dipole - spin interactions. Our estimate of the interaction magnitude shows that there exist an optimal carrier concentration, at which the strength of ME interaction is maximal and comparable to that of spin-spin RKKY interaction. This permits to conclude that in substances, where RKKY interaction between local spins is not small, a substantial value of free carriers mediated ME interaction can occur. Our analysis shows that disorder in the above substances does not suppress multiferroic effects.

We study the effect of depolarization field related with inhomogeneous polarization distribution, strain and surface energy parameters on a domain wall profile near the surface of a ferroelectric film within the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenology. Both inhomogeneous elastic stress and positive surface energy lead to the wall broadening at electrically screened surface. For ferroelectrics with weak piezoelectric coupling, the extrapolation length that defines surface energy parameter, affects the wall broadening more strongly than inhomogeneous elastic stress. Unexpectedly, the domain wall profile follows a long-range power law when approaching the surface, while it saturates exponentially in the bulk. In materials with high piezoelectric coupling and negligibly small surface energy (i.e. high extrapolation length) inhomogeneous elastic stress effect dominates.

The general approach for the consideration of the magnetoelectric effects in ferroic nanorods is proposed in the framework of the phenomenological theory. The intrinsic surface stress, magneto- and electrostriction as well as piezoelectric and piezomagnetic effects are included into the free energy. The intrinsic surface stress under the curved nanoparticle surface is shown to play an important role in the shift of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic transition temperatures and built-in magnetic and electric fields appearance, which are inversely proportional to the nanorod radius. We consider the case of quadratic and linear magnetoelectric coupling coefficients. The linear coupling coefficient is radius independent, whereas the quadratic ones include terms inversely proportional to the nanorod radius and thus strongly increase with decrease of the radius. The predicted giant relative dielectric tunability in the vicinity of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase transition points induced by quadratic magnetoelectric coupling increases by 2-50 times. The quadratic magnetoelectric coupling dramatically changes the phase diagrams of ferroic nanorods when the radius decreases. In particular the second order phase transition may become a first one, the triple point state characterized by continuous set of order parameters appears at zero external electric and magnetic fields and the tricritical points appear under external fields.

The consideration of size-induced ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition for conventional and incipient ferroelectrics thin films with perovskite structure was carried out in phenomenological theory framework of Ginsburg-Landau-Devonshire. The more general form of surface free energy expansion that includes intrinsic surface stress tensor, surface piezoelectric effect and electrostriction as well as quadratic and quartic powers of surface polarization has been considered. The analytical expressions for thickness dependence of transition temperature was derived both for the conventional and incipient ferroelectrics. It was shown that although there is no ferroelectricity in the bulk incipient ferroelectrics it appears in thin film for the negative extrapolation length that is realized e.g. at positive surface stress coefficient and negative or zero misfit strain. In our consideration we came to the conclusion about thickness induced ferroelectricity in incipient ferroelectrics KTaO3 at room temperature for the thin enough films. The similar surface effects can influence strongly on the phase transitions in the thin films of another incipient ferroelectrics, SrTiO3.

General approach for consideration of primary ferroic (ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, ferroelastic) nanoparticles phase transitions was proposed in phenomenological theory framework. The surface stress, order parameter gradient, striction as well as depolarization and demagnetization effects were included into the free energy. The strong intrinsic surface stress under the curved nanoparticle surface was shown to play the important role in the shift of transition temperature (if any) up to the appearance of new ordered phase absent in the bulk ferroic. The approximate analytical expression for the size-induced ferroelectric transition temperature dependence on cylindrical or spherical nanoparticle sizes, polarization gradient coefficient, correlation radius, intrinsic surface stress and electrostriction coefficient was derived. It was shown that the transition temperature of nanoparticle could be higher than the one of the bulk material. The best conditions of ferroelectric properties conservation and enhancement in nanowires correspond to the radius 5-50nm and compressive surface stress. Under the favorable conditions size effects (spatial confinement) induces ferroelectric phase in incipient ferroelectrics nanowires and nanospheres. The prediction of size-induced ferroelectricity in KTaO3 nanorods with radius less then 5-20 nm at room temperatures could be important for the next step of device miniaturization based on 3D nanostructures.

Using electron spin resonance, lattice position and dynamic properties of Mn2+ ions were studied in 0.5 and 2 % manganese doped SrTiO3 ceramics prepared by conventional mixed oxide method. The measurements showed that Mn2+ ions substitute preferably up to 97 % for Sr if the ceramics is prepared with a deficit of Sr ions. Motional narrowing of the Mn2+ ESR spectrum was observed when temperature increases from 120 K to 240-250 K that was explained as a manifestation of off-center position of this ion at the Sr site. From the analysis of the ESR spectra the activation energy Ea = 86 mV and frequency factor 1/?0 ? (2-10)x10^(-14) 1/s for jum** of the impurity between symmetrical off-center positions were determined. Both values are in agreement with those derived previously from dielectric relaxation. This proves the origin of dielectric anomalies in SrTiO3:Mn as those produced by the reorientation dynamics of Mn2+ dipoles.

Experimental investigation of Sr1-xMnxTiO3 properties, namely temperature, frequency and external electric field dependence of dielectric permittivity at different concentrations gave evidence about phase transitions induced by the impurities. However their nature was not found out up to now because of the absence of the theoretical analysis of the results. In this paper we performed such analysis by the theoretical description of the temperature of dielectric permittivity maxima dependence on Mn2+ concentration, the change of residual polarization with temperature, frequency and temperature dependence of the permittivity with Arrhenius and Vogel-Fulcher law at smaller and larger concentration respectively. The obtained results had shown that at x less than 0,03 and x between 0,15 and 0,03 the considered system Sr1-xMnxTiO3 is in dipole glass state and mixed ferroglass phase respectively.

For the first time we proposed the model for the calculations of the relaxor ferroelectrics films properties in the framework of the random field theory. We took into account the misfit strain between film and substrate as well as surface piezoelectric effect that causes built-in electric field in the strained films. In the statistical theory framework we calculated random field distribution function with the electric dipoles and monopoles as the field sources. It was shown that with thickness decrease the mean field decreases, while the width of the distribution function increases. This leads to the additional smearing of the phase transition in the films in comparison to the bulk relaxors. As an example the dependence of the order parameter and dielectric susceptibility on the film thickness, temperature and random fields distribution function parameters was obtained. For free standing film the existence of critical thickness of relaxor state transformation into glassy state was predicted. Contrary to this the appearance of misfit strain induced ferroelectric phase appeared to be possible for some pairs film-substrate. We have shown that susceptibility temperature maximum shift with frequency in relaxor ferroelectric thin films obeys Vogel-Fulcher law with parameters dependent on film thickness. For the first time the analytical dependences of freezing temperature decreases and activation energy on the thickness was obtained, namely freezing temperature decreases and activation energy increases with film thickness decrease. Obtained results quantitatively agree with the available experimental data for PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 relaxor thin films.

We calculated the influence of surface tension on the barriers of oxygen ionic conductivity in nanograin ceramics. Activation energy of oxygen ions diffusion via oxygen vacancies which were considered as the dilatational centers was calculated. This energy was shown to decrease with nanoparticle sizes decreasing. The distribution function of activation energy was derived on the basis of distribution of nanoparticle sizes. We obtained an analytical expressions of ionic conductivity dependence on the temperature and nanograin sizes. These formulas fitted pretty good the observed earlier behaviour of oxygen conductivity in nanograin ceramics of ZrO2:16% Y observed earlier. Therefore the consideration we carried out had shown that the surface tension in nanoparticles is physical mechanism responsible for the essential enhancement of the oxygen ionic conductivity observed in nanograin samples, the main contribution to the conductivity being related to the region in vicinity of the particle surface.
