Nabokoite family compounds ACu$_7$(TeO$_4$)(SO$_4$)$_5$Cl (A=Na, K, Cs, Rb) are candidates for the experimental realization of highly-frustrated 2D square kagome lattice (SKL). Their magnetic subsystem includes SKL layers decorated by additional copper ions. All members of this family are characterized by quite high Curie-Weiss temperatures ($\sim 80-200$ K), but magnetic ordering was reported only for Na and K compounds at a much lower temperatures below 4 K. We report here results of the study of high-frequency ($\sim 10$ GHz) dielectric properties of this family of compounds. Our study revealed presence of the strong dielectric anomaly both in the real and imaginary parts of high-frequency dielectric permittivity for Na and K compounds approx. 100 and 26 K, correspondingly, presumably related to antiferroelectric ordering. Additionally, much weaker anomalies were observed at approximately 5K indicating possible interplay of magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom. We discuss possible relation between the structure rearrangements accompanying dielectric anomalies and a delayed magnetic ordering in the nabokoite family compounds.

We report the detailed study of the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in a dipolar-Heisenberg magnet LiGdF$_4$ using magnetization measurements performed on a single crystal sample. Entropy variation on isothermal demagnetization from the magnetic field up to 3 T is determined in the temperature range 2-10 K for two principal directions of the applied field (parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal $c$-axis of the crystal). The MCE is found to be highly anisotropic, with the cooling efficiency being up to twice higher at $H\parallel c$. The results are nicely interpreted in the frame of a conventional molecular field approach taking into account considerable anisotropy of the paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature. These results are compared to earlier studies of MCE in powder samples of LiGdF$_4$ [T. Numazawa et al., AIP Conf. Proc. 850, 1579 (2006)] as well as with analogous data for other well known magnetocaloric materials. Our findings may open new possibilities to enhance the efficiency of magnetic refrigeration in the liquid helium-4 temperature range.

We report results of a multi-frequency (0.8-60 GHz) electron spin resonance study of the spin dynamics in the quasi-2D square lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$MnGe$_2$O$_7$ both in antiferromagnetically ordered and paramagnetic phases. We directly observe two zero-field gaps in the excitation spectrum of the ordered phase, the larger one being due to easy-plane anisotropy, and the smaller one indicates the presence of fourth-order in-plane anisotropy probably related to the multiferroic properties of this compound. We observe effects of hyperfine interaction on the electron spin resonance spectra in the antiferromagnetically ordered state, which turns out to be comparable with in-plane anisotropy. The hyperfine field strength is found from the observed low-temperature electron spin resonance data. The spin dynamics of the paramagnetic phase is characterized by strong broadening of the ESR absorption line, which can be ascribed to the vortex dynamics of a 2D magnet.

The magnetic subsystem of nabokoite, KCu$_7$(TeO$_4$)(SO$_4$)$_5$Cl, is constituted by copper ions forming a buckled square kagomé lattice decorated by quasi-isolated ions. This combination determines peculiar physical properties of this compound evidenced in electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy, dielectric permittivity $\varepsilon$, magnetization $M$ and specific heat $C_p$ measurements. At lowering temperature, the magnetic susceptibility $χ= M/H$ passes through a broad hump inherent for low-dimensional magnetic systems at about 150 K and a sharp peak at antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_N = 3.2 $K. The $C_p(T,H)$ curves demonstrate additional peak-like anomaly at $T_{peak}= 5.7$K robust to magnetic field. The latter can be ascribed to low-lying singlet excitations filling the singlet-triplet gap in magnetic excitation spectrum of the square kagomé lattice [J.Richter, O.Derzhko and J.Schnack, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{105} (2022) 144427]. ESR spectroscopy provides indications that antiferromagnetic structure below $T_N$ is non-collinear. Separate issue is the observation of antiferroelectric-type behavior in $\varepsilon$ at low temperatures, which tentatively reduces the symmetry and partially lifts frustration of magnetic interactions of decorating copper ions with buckled square kagomé lattice. These complex thermodynamic and resonant properties signal the presence of two weakly coupled magnetic subsystems in nabokoite, namely a spin-liquid in square kagomé lattice layers and an antiferromagnet represented by decorating ions.

Low-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance measurements are performed on single crystals of LiY_{1-x}Gd_xF_4 with weak x=0.005 and moderate x=0.05 concentration of Gd ions. Modeling of the experimental spectra allows us to precisely determine microscopic parameters of the spin Hamiltonian of the parent LiGdF4 material, including the nearest-neighbor exchange constant. The obtained parameters are further tested by comparing a strongly anisotropic Curie-Weiss temperature obtained for LiGdF4 in our static magnetization measurements with theoretically computed values. We find a fine balance between principal magnetic interactions in LiGdF4, which results in a hidden magnetic frustration presumably leading to a delayed magnetic ordering and an enhanced magnetocaloric effect at low temperatures.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnet NiCl$_2\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, usually abbreviated as DTN, does not order at zero field down to $T=0$: due to the strong single-ion anisotropy of the "easy plane" type acting on $S=1$ Ni$^{2+}$ ions, the $S_z=0$ ground state is separated from $S_z=\pm 1$ excitations by an energy gap. Once the magnetic field is applied along the main anisotropy axis, the gap closes at $B_{c1}=2.18$ T and the field-induced antiferromagnetic order arises. The low-energy excitations spectrum of this field-induced ordered state includes two branches of excitations, one of them have to be a gapless Goldstone mode. Recent studies of excitations spectrum in a field-induced ordered state of DTN (T.Soldatov et.al, Phys.Rev.B 101, 104410 (2020)) have revealed that Goldstone mode became gapped as magnetic field deviates from the main symmetry axis. This paper proposes simple description of antiferromagnetic resonance modes of quasi-one-dimensional quantum $S=1$ magnet with strong single-ion anisotropy. The approach used is based on a combination of the strong coupling model for the anisotropic spin chain with the conventional mean-field model of antiferromagnetic resonance. The resulting model fits to the known experimental results without additional tuning parameters.

Some magnets due to particular geometry of the exchange bonds do not undergo transition to the conventional magnetically ordered state despite of the presence of significant exchange couplings. Instead, a collective paramagnetic state is formed. The later state can remain stable down to $T=0$ if the ground state of this magnet turns out to be nonmagnetic singlet separated from the excited triplet states by an energy gap. Low-temperature spin dynamics of the collective paramagnets with gapped excitations spectrum (or spin-gap magnets) can be described in terms of a dilute gas of the triplet excitations. Applied magnetic field can suppress the energy gap, resulting in the formation of the gapless spin-liquid state or even leading to the unusual phenomenon of field-induced antiferromagnetic order. Introduction of defects in the crystallographic structure of the spin-gap magnet can result either in the formation of multi-spin paramagnetic center or in the formation of randomly distributed modified exchange bonds in the crystal. This review includes results of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy study of several representative quantum paramagnets with gapped excitations spectrum: quasy-two-dimensional magnet \phcc{}, quasy-one-dimensional magnets of "spin-tube" type \sul{} and "spin-ladder" type \dimpy{}. We will demonstrate that ESR absorption spectra reveal common features of these systems: ESR spectroscopy allows to observe and characterize fine structure if the triplet energy levels, to identify many-particles relaxation processes in the gas of triplet excitations and to observe collective spin-wave oscillations in the field induced antiferromagnetically ordered state, as well as to observe some individual features of the studied systems.

Close to the point where the system is half-magnetized (and believed to be equivalent to a gapless easy plane chain in zero field) we observed orientation-dependent spin gap and anomalous $g$-factor values. Field theoretical analysis demonstrates that the observed low-energy excitation modes in magnetized (C$_{5}$H$_{12}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ are solitonic excitations caused by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction presence.

Low-temperature magnetic resonance study of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu(en)(H$_2$O)$_2$SO$_4$ (en = C$_2$H$_8$N$_2$) was performed down to 0.45~K. This compound orders antiferromagnetically at 0.9K. The analysis of the resonance data within the hydrodynamic approach allowed to identify anisotropy axes and to estimate the anisotropy parameters for the antiferromagnetic phase. Dipolar spin-spin coupling turns out to be the main contribution to the anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic phase. The splitting of the resonance modes and its non-monotonous dependency on the applied frequency was observed below 0.6K in all three field orientations. Several models were discussed to explain the origin of the nontrivial splitting and the existence of inequivalent magnetic subsystems in Cu(en)(H$_2$O)$_2$SO$_4$ was chosen as the most probable source.

High-temperature spin-relaxation time was found to increase with non-magnetic dilution. The ESR linewidth analysis proves that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction remains the dominant spin-relaxation channel in diluted DIMPY. Experimental data indicate that the dilution results in the weakening of the effective DM interaction, which can be interpreted as total suppression of DM interaction in the close vicinity of impurity atom.

Nonlinearity of magnetization with local minimum of differential susceptibility resembling known magnetization plateaus of triangular-lattice and pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnets is observed at intermediate temperature range $ J\lesssim T\lesssimΘ$ (here $J$ is the exchange coupling constant and $Θ$ is a Curie-Weiss temperature). This behavior is due to increased statistical weight of the states with intermediate total spin of the cluster, which is related to the `order-by-disorder' mechanism of plateau stabilization of a macroscopic frustrated magnet.

The second magnetic transition was observed at H~15 T for all three principal field directions. This high field magnetic phase is discussed as a collinear spin-modulated phase which is expected for an S=1/2 nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic chain system.

We report a sequence of continuous phase transformations in iron telluride, Fe1+yTe (y~0.1), which is observed by combining neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on single crystal samples. While a gradual increase of magnetic scattering near the wave vector (0.5, 0, 0.5) is seen below T = 70 K, a temperature where the discontinuous first order magneto-structural phase transition is found in systems with small y (< 0.06), the reduction of the lattice symmetry in Fe1.1Te only occurs at Ts = 63 K. Below TN = 57.5 K the long-range magnetic order develops, whose incommensurate wave vector Qm varies with temperature. Finally, at Tm ~ 45 K the system enters the low-T phase, where Qm is locked at (0.48, 0, 0.5). We conclude that these instabilities are weak compared to the strength of the underlying interactions, and we suggest that the impact of the Fe interstitials on the transitions can be treated with random-field models.

The spin dynamics of a quasi one dimensional $S=1$ bond alternating spin-gap antiferromagnet Ni(C$_9$H$_{24}$N$_4$)NO$_2$(ClO$_4$) (abbreviated as NTENP) is studied by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. Five modes of ESR transitions are observed and identified: transitions between singlet ground state and excited triplet states, three modes of transitions between spin sublevels of collective triplet states and antiferromagnetic resonance absorption in the field-induced antiferromagnetically ordered phase. Singlet-triplet and intra-triplet modes demonstrate a doublet structure which is due to two maxima in the density of magnon states in the low-frequency range. A joint analysis of the observed spectra and other experimental results allows to test the applicability of the fermionic and bosonic models. We conclude that the fermionic approach is more appropriate for the particular case of NTENP.

We observe several resonance modes corresponding to different structural domains and found that the number of domains can be easily reduced by field-cooling the sample through the transition point. To describe the observed antiferromagnetic resonance spectra it is necessary to take into account an orthorhombic lattice distortion in addition to the earlier reported tetragonal distortion which both appear at the antiferromagnetic phase transition.

We present a systematic study of the low-energy excitation spectrum of DTN in the field-induced magnetically ordered phase by means of high-field electron spin resonance measurements at temperatures down to 0.45 K. We argue that two gapped modes observed in the experiment can be consistently interpreted within a four-sublattice antiferromagnet model with a finite interaction between two tetragonal subsystems and unbroken axial symmetry. The latter is crucial for the interpretation of the field-induced ordering in DTN in terms of BEC.

The resonance field is temperature dependent, indicating the renormalization of excitation spectrum in interaction between the triplets. Magnetic resonance frequencies and critical fields of the magnetization curve are consistent with a boson version of the macroscopic field theory [Affleck 1992, Farutin & Marchenko 2007], implying the field induced ordering at the critical field, while contradict the previously used approach of noninteracting spin chains.

A quasi-one dimensional antiferromagnet with a strong reduction of the ordered spin component, BaCu2Si2O7, is studied by the magnetic resonance technique in a wide field and frequency range. Besides of conventional spin-flop transition at the magnetic field parallel to the easy axis of spin ordering, magnetic resonance spectra indicate additional spin-reorientation transitions in all three principal orientations of magnetic field. At these additional transitions the spins rotate in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field kee** the mutual arrangement of ordered spin components. The observed magnetic resonance spectra and spin-reorientation phase transitions are quantitatively described by a model including the anisotropy of transverse susceptibility with respect to the order parameter orientation. The anisotropy of the transverse susceptibility and the strong reduction of the anisotropy energy due to the quantum spin fluctuations are proposed to be the reason of the spin reorientations which are observed.

Three kinds of magnetic resonance signals were detected in crystals of the spin-gap magnet TlCuCl_3.
First, we have observed the microwave absorption due to the excitation of the transitions between the singlet ground state and the excited triplet states. This mode has the linear frequency-field dependence corresponding to the previously known value of the zero-field spin-gap of 156 GHz and to the closing of spin-gap at the magnetic field H_c of about 50 kOe.
Second, the thermally activated resonance absorption due to the transitions between the spin sublevels of the triplet excitations was found. These sublevels are split by the crystal field and external magnetic field.
Finally, we have observed antiferromagnetic resonance absorption in the field-induced antiferromagnetic phase above the critical field H_c. This resonance frequency is strongly anisotropic with respect to the direction of the magnetic field.

The observed temperature dependences of the effective g-factor and the linewidth of the electron spin resonance (ESR) in crystals of Cu(1-x)Ni(x)GeO(3) are described in the model of the exchange narrowing of the two-component spectrum with one component ascribed to spin clusters and exhibiting an anomalous value of the $g$-factor and the other related to triplet excitations. An estimation of the size of the suppressed dimerization region around the impurity ion is obtained (this region includes about 30 copper ions). The dependence of the effective g-factor and the ESR linewidth on the impurity concentration at low temperatures indicates the interaction of clusters.

The impurity induced antiferromagnetic ordering of the doped spin-Peierls magnet Cu(1-x)Mg(x)GeO(3) was studied by ESR technique. Crystals with the Mg concentration x<4% demonstrate a coexistence of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic ESR modes. This coexistence indicates the separation of a macroscopically uniform sample in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. In the presence of the long-range spin-Peierls order (in a sample with x=1.71%) the volume of the antiferromagnetic phase immediately below the Néel point T_N is much smaller than the volume of the paramagnetic phase. In the presence of the short-range spin-Peierls order (in samples with x=2.88%, x= 3.2%) there are comparable volumes of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases at T=T_N. The fraction of the antiferromagnetic phase increases with lowering temperature. In the absence of the spin-Peierls dimerization (at x=4.57%)the whole sample exhibits the transition into the antiferromagnetic state and there is no phase separation. The phase separation is explained by the consideration of clusters of staggered magnetization located near impurity atoms. In this model the areas occupied by coherently correlated spins expand with decreasing temperature and the percolation of the ordered area through a macroscopic distance occurs.

ESR of the pure monocrystals of CuGeO3 is studied in the frequency range 9-75 GHz and in the temperature interval 1.2-25 K. The splitting of the ESR line into several spectral components is observed below 5 K, in the temperature range where the magnetic susceptibility is suppressed by the spin-Peierls dimerization. The analysis of the magnetic resonance signals allows one to separate the signals of the S=1/2- and S=1 defects of the spin-Peierls phase. The value of g-factor of these signals is close to that of the Cu-ion. The additional line of the magnetic resonance is characterized by an anomalous value of the g-factor and by the threshold-like increase of the microwave susceptibility when the microwave power is increasing. The ESR signals are supposingly attributed to two types of the planar magnetic defects, arising at the boundaries of the domains of the spin-Peierls state with the different values of the phase of the dimerization.

ESR-study of the Ni-doped spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 has been performed in the frequency range 9-75 GHz. At low temperatures the g-factor is smaller than the value expected for Cu- and Ni-ions. This anomaly is explained by the formation of magnetic clusters around the Ni-ions within a nonmagnetic spin-Peierls matrix. The transition into the AFM-state detected earlier by neutron scattering for doped samples was studied by means of ESR. For x=0.032 a gap in the magnetic resonance spectrum is found below the Neel temperature and the spectrum is well described by the theory of antiferromagnetic resonance based on the molecular field approximation. For x=0.017 the spectrum below the Neel point remained gapless. The gapless spectrum of the antiferromagnetic state in weekly doped samples is attributed to the small value of the Neel order parameter and to the magnetically disordered spin-Peierls background.
