TiO$_{2}$ nanoparticles (NPs) have unique photocatalytic properties, which are used in food industries, medicine, biosensorics, and solar energy conversion. Since the toxic properties of TiO$_{2}$ NPs have been insufficiently studied, additional information on the molecular mechanisms of their biological action on the structure and stability of biological macromolecules is needed, especially concerning DNA. In this work exploiting the differential UV-visible spectroscopy, the effect of the heating (from 20 till 90 $^0$C) and concentration of TiO$_{2}$ NPs ((1-3)$\times$10$^-$$^4$ M) on a conformation of native DNA adsorbed on TiO$_{2}$ NPs in a buffer solution (pH 5) is studied. Analysis of dynamic light scattering (DLS) data for the DNA:TiO$_{2}$ NPs suspension revealed that when the temperature increases the separated DNA:TiO$_{2}$ NP nanoassemblies form nanoaggregates. Correlation between the thermal dependency of the DLS data and thermal DNA denaturation measurements indicated that the appearance of the single-stranded unwound regions in double-stranded DNA in the suspension with temperature rise promotes the effective formation of the DNA:TiO$_{2}$ NPs nanoaggregates.

Iron-pnictides Ca(Fe1-xRhx)2As2 (x = 0, 0.035, and 0.19) were studied across the tetragonal-orthorhombic and uncollapsed to collapsed tetragonal phase transitions using Raman spectroscopy. The effect of the phase separation was observed in the high-temperature phase for the first time. Two phases with the low-spin and high-spin states of the Fe2+ ions coexist in the undoped (x = 0) and doped (x = 0.035) samples at ambient conditions. These two phases are present on a larger length scale and they are not limited to the local distortions. Both phases in the undoped sample successfully undergo tetra-to-ortho phase transitions approximately at the same temperature T0 = 160 K. In doped samples, a cascade of phase transitions is observed at temperatures T* = 100 K and Tc = 72 K with cooling for the first time. A complex type of the re-entrant magnetic structure is realized in the x = 0.035 sample at temperatures below Tc, which is distinct from the usual orthorhombic twofold one. The overdoped sample (x = 0.19) also shows phase separation at temperatures 7 - 295 K in Raman spectra similar to these of the remnant phase.

$TiO_{2}$ nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in the environmental engineering, medicine, chemical and food industries due to their unique photocatalytic and biocidal properties. NPs may generate reactive oxygen species and, hence, have the toxic effect on the living cells via oxidative stress. An external UV irradiation may magnify the photocatalytic properties of $TiO_{2}$ NPs. In this regard, we have analyzed the influence of $TiO_{2}$ NPs on the conformation and thermal stability of native DNA in a buffer solution without and under UV irradiation exploiting absorption spectroscopy with DNA thermal denaturation in the range of 20-94 degrees Celsius. Upon DNA heating from about 25 to 44 degrees Celsius, we have observed the stabilization of DNA duplex in the presence of $TiO_{2}$ NPs. This additional biopolymer stabilization indicates that partial DNA unwinding appears as a result of the direct binding of the biopolymer to NPs. We showed that the performed UV treatment of DNA during 3 hours leads to partial unwinding of the biopolymer structure. The NPs injection to the biopolymer solution induced the additional effect on the DNA thermal stability under UV irradiation. The performed analysis of the experimental data suggests that the nature of the impact of NPs on the biopolymer is complex.

We investigated SrFeO$_{3-x}$ thin films on a SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrate prepared via pulsed laser epitaxy using an optical spectroscopy technique. The oxygen vacancy level ($x$) was controlled by post-annealing processes at different oxygen partial pressures. We achieved a brownmillerite(BM) structure at $x =$ 0.5 and observed the evolution of the crystal structure from BM into perovskite(PV) as the oxygen concentration increased. We observed the evolution of infrared-active phonons with respect to the oxygen concentration, which was closely related to the structural evolution observed via X-ray diffraction. We identified the phonons using the shell-model calculation. Furthermore, we studied temperature-dependent behaviors of the phonon modes of three representative samples: PV, and two BMs (BM$_{\mathrm{oop}}$ and BM$_{\mathrm{ip}}$) with different orientations of the oxygen vacancy channel. In the BM$_{\mathrm{oop}}$ sample, we observed a phonon mode, which exhibited an unusual red-shift with decreasing temperature; this behavior may have been due to the apical oxygen instability in the FeO$_6$ octahedron. Our results provide important information regarding the ionic conduction mechanism in SrFeO$_{3-x}$ material systems.

Raman spectroscopy is employed to probe directly the soft rotation and tilting modes, which are two primary order parameters predicted in the hybrid improper ferroelectric material Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$. We observe a giant softening of the 107-cm$^{-1}$ octahedron tilting mode by 26~cm$^{-1}$, on heating through the structural transition from a ferroelectric to paraelectric orthorhombic phase. This is contrasted by a small softening of the 150-cm$^{-1}$ rotational mode by 6~cm$^{-1}$. In the intermediate phase, the competing soft modes with different symmetries coexist, bringing about many-faceted anomalies in spin excitations and lattice vibrations. Our work demonstrates that the soft rotation and tilt patterns, relying on a phase-transition path, are a key factor in determining ferroelectric, magnetic, and lattice properties of Ca$_3$Mn$_2$O$_7$.

Zero-field muon spin rotation and electron spin resonance probes disclose a successive crossover from a paramagnetic through a spin-liquid-like into a magnetically ordered state with decreasing temperature. More significantly, the two-magnon Raman response obeys a T-linear scaling relation in its peak energy, linewidth and intensity. This critical scaling behavior presents an experimental signature of proximity to a quantum critical point from an ordered side in Ba2CuTeO6.

Raman scattering has been employed to investigate lattice and magnetic excitations of the honeycomb Kitaev material $α$-RuCl$_3$ and its Heisenberg counterpart CrCl$_3$. Our phonon Raman spectra give evidence for a first-order structural transition from a monoclinic to a rhombohedral structure for both compounds. Significantly, only $α$-RuCl$_3$ features a large thermal hysteresis, consistent with the formation of a wide phase of coexistence. In the related temperature interval of $70-170$ K, we observe a hysteretic behavior of magnetic excitations as well. The stronger magnetic response in the rhombohedral compared to the monoclinic phase evidences a coupling between the crystallographic structure and low-energy magnetic response. Our results demonstrate that the Kitaev magnetism concomitant with fractionalized excitations is susceptible to small variations of bonding geometry.

The fractionalization of elementary excitations in quantum spin systems is a central theme in current condensed matter physics. The Kitaev honeycomb spin model provides a prominent example of exotic fractionalized quasiparticles, composed of itinerant Majorana fermions and gapped gauge fluxes. However, identification of the Majorana fermions in a three-dimensional honeycomb lattice remains elusive. Here we report spectroscopic signatures of fractional excitations in the harmonic-honeycomb iridates $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Using polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy, we find that the dynamical Raman response of $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ features a broad scattering continuum with distinct polarization and composition dependence. The temperature dependence of the Raman spectral weight is dominated by the thermal dam** of fermionic excitations. These results suggest the emergence of Majorana fermions from spin fractionalization in a three-dimensional Kitaev-Heisenberg system.

We report on the investigation of vibrational and electronic properties of the Pb doped dichalcogenide PbxTaSe2 using Raman scattering experiments. We observe a marked variation of the main vibrational modes with Pb concentration x. The concentration dependence of the vibrational modes resembles the dependence of the vibrational modes in TaSe2 on the number of crystallographic layers along the c axis direction [1]. The temperature and polarization dependence of Raman spectra of PbxTaSe2 revealed additional broad modes in the low frequency regime which are discussed in context of remnant charge density wave, induced disorder, or PbSe phase formed in the interface of Pb and TaSe2 layers.

When elaborating the biosensor based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), it is necessary to solve such an important problem as the immobilization of a target biomolecule on the nanotube surface. In this work, the enzyme (glucose oxidase (GOX)) was immobilized on the surface of a nanotube network, which was created by the deposition of nanotubes from their solution in 1,2-dichlorobenzene by the spray method. 1-Pyrenebutanoic acid succinimide ester (PSE) was used to form the molecular interface, the bifunctional molecule of which provides the covalent binding with the enzyme shell, and its other part (pyrene) is adsorbed onto the nanotube surface. First, the usage of such a molecular interface leaves out the direct adsorption of the enzyme (in this case, its activity decreases) onto the nanotube surface, and, second, it ensures the enzyme localization near the nanotube. The comparison of the resonance Raman (RR) spectrum of pristine nanotubes with their spectrum in the PSE environment evidences the creation of a nanohybrid formed by an SWNT with a PSE molecule which provides the further enzyme immobilization. As the RR spectrum of an SWNT:PSE:GOX film does not essentially differ from that of SWNT:PSE ones, this indicates that the molecular interface (PSE) isolates the enzyme from nanotubes strongly enough. The efficient immobilization of GOX along the carbon nanotubes due to PSE is confirmed with atom-force microscopy images. The method of molecular dynamics allowed us to establish the structures of SWNT:PSE:GOX created in the aqueous environment and to determine the interaction energy between hybrid components. In addition, the conductivity of the SWNT network with adsorbed PSE and GOX molecules is studied.
