Science is and always has been based on data, but the terms "data-centric" and the "4th paradigm of" materials research indicate a radical change in how information is retrieved, handled and research is performed. It signifies a transformative shift towards managing vast data collections, digital repositories, and innovative data analytics methods. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its subset Machine Learning (ML), has become pivotal in addressing all these challenges. This Roadmap on Data-Centric Materials Science explores fundamental concepts and methodologies, illustrating diverse applications in electronic-structure theory, soft matter theory, microstructure research, and experimental techniques like photoemission, atom probe tomography, and electron microscopy. While the roadmap delves into specific areas within the broad interdisciplinary field of materials science, the provided examples elucidate key concepts applicable to a wider range of topics. The discussed instances offer insights into addressing the multifaceted challenges encountered in contemporary materials research.

While capable of imaging the atoms constituting thin slabs of material, the achievable resolution of conventional electron imaging techniques in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) is very sensitive to the partial spatial coherence of the electron source, lens aberrations and mechanical instabilities of the microscope. The desire to break free from the limitations of the apparatus spurred the popularity of ptychography, a computational phase retrieval technique that, to some extent, can compensate for the imperfections of the equipment. Recently it was shown that ptychography is capable of resolving specimen features as fine as the blurring due to the vibrations of atoms, a limit defined not by the microscope, but by the investigated sample itself. Here we report on the successful application of a mixed-object formalism in the ptychographic reconstruction that enables the resolution of fluctuations in atomic positions within real space. We show a reconstruction of a symmetric Σ9 grain boundary in silicon from realistically (molecular dynamics) simulated data. By reconstructing the object as an ensemble of 10 different states we were able to observe movements of atoms in the range of 0.1-0.2 Åin agreement with the expectation. This is a significant step forward in the field of electron ptychography, as it enables the study of dynamic systems with unprecedented precision and overcomes the resolution limit so far considered to be imposed by the thermal motion of the atoms.

One of the reasons for this success is the development of new high performance electron detectors with increased dynamic range and readout speed, both of which are necessary for a successful application of this technique. Despite the advances made in computing power, processing the recorded data remains a challenging task, and the growth in data rate has made the size of the resulting datasets a bottleneck for the whole process. Here we present an investigation into lossy compression methods for electron diffraction patterns that retain the necessary information for ptychographic reconstructions, yet lead to a decrease in data set size by three or four orders of magnitude. We apply several compression methods to both simulated and experimental data - all with promising results.

Hyperentanglement, the simultaneous and independent entanglement of quantum particles in multiple degrees of freedom, is a powerful resource that can be harnessed for efficient quantum information processing. In photonic systems, the two degrees of freedom (DoF) often used to carry quantum and classical information are polarization and frequency, thanks to their robustness in transmission, both in free space and in optical fibers. Telecom-band hyperentangled photons generated in optical fibers are of particular interest because they are compatible with existing fiber-optic infrastructure, and can be distributed over fiber networks with minimal loss. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the generation of telecom-band biphotons hyperentangled in both the polarization and frequency DoFs using a periodically-poled silica fiber and observe entanglement concurrences above 0.95 for both polarization and frequency DOFs. Furthermore, by concatenating a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference test for frequency entanglement and full state tomography for polarization entanglement in a single experiment, we can demonstrate simultaneous entanglement in both the polarization and frequency DOFs. The states produced by our hyperentanglement source can enable protocols such as dense coding and high-dimensional quantum key distribution.

The photon-pair source exhibits more than 130 nm (~24 THz) emission bandwidth centered at 1306.6 nm. The broad emission spectrum results in a short biphoton correlation time and we experimentally demonstrate a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference dip with a full width of 26.6 fs at half maximum. Owing to the low birefringence of the PPSF, the biphotons generated from type-II SPDC are polarization-entangled over the entire emission bandwidth, with a measured fidelity to a maximally entangled state greater than 95.4%. The biphoton source provides the broadest bandwidth entangled biphotons at O-band to our knowledge.

Quantum entanglement is an integral part of quantum optics and has been exploited in areas such as computation, cryptography and metrology. The entanglement between photons can be present in various degrees of freedom (DOFs), and even the simplest bi-partite systems can occupy a large Hilbert space. Therefore, it is desirable to exploit this multi-dimensional space for various quantum applications by fully controlling the properties of the entangled photons in multiple DOFs. While current entangled-photon sources are capable of generating entanglement in one or more DOFs, there is currently a lack of practical techniques that can shape and control the entanglement properties in multiple DOFs. Here we show that cascading two or more entangled-photon sources with tunable linear media in between allows us to generate photon-pairs whose entanglement properties can be tailored and shaped in the frequency and polarisation domains. We first develop a quantum mechanical model to study the quantum state generated from the cascade structure with special considerations paid to the effects of pump temporal coherence, linear dispersion, and in-structure polarisation transformation applied between the entangled-photon sources. We then experimentally generate photon-pairs with tunable entanglement properties by manipulating the dispersion and birefringence properties of the linear medium placed in between two entangled-photon sources. This is done in an all-fibre, phase stable, and alignment-free configuration. Our results show that the cascade structure offers a great deal of flexibility in tuning the properties of entangled photons in multiple DOFs, opening up a new avenue in engineering quantum light sources.

Measuring the dispersion of photonic devices with small dispersion-length products is challenging due to the phase-sensitive, and alignment-intensive nature of conventional methods. In this letter, we demonstrate a quantum technique to extract the second-, and third-order chromatic dispersion of a short single-mode fiber using a fiber-based quantum nonlinear interferometer. The interferometer consists of two cascaded fiber-based biphoton sources, with each source acting as a nonlinear beamsplitter. A fiber under test is placed in between these two sources, and introduces a frequency-dependent phase that is imprinted upon the biphoton spectrum (interferogram) at the output of the interferometer. This interferogram contains within it the dispersion properties of the test fiber. Our technique has three novel features: (1) The broadband nature of the biphoton sources used in our setup allows accurate dispersion measurements on test devices with small dispersion-length products; (2) our all-fiber common-path interferometer requires no beam alignment or phase stabilization; (3) multiple phase-matching processes supported in our biphoton sources enables dispersion measurements at different wavelengths, which yields the third-order dispersion, achieved for the first time using a quantum optical technique.

The study of resonant dielectric nanostructures with high refractive index is a new research direction in nanoscale optics and metamaterial-inspired nanophotonics. Because of the unique optically-induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances, high-index nanoscale structures are expected to complement or even replace different plasmonic components in a range of potential applications. Here we study strong coupling between modes of a single subwavelength high-index dielectric resonator and analyse the mode transformation and Fano resonances when resonator's aspect ratio varies. We demonstrate that strong mode coupling results in resonances with high quality factors, which are related to the physics of bound states in the continuum when the radiative losses are almost suppressed due to the Friedrich-Wintgen scenario of destructive interference. We explain the physics of these states in terms of multipole decomposition and show that their appearance is accompanied by drastic change of the far-field radiation pattern. We reveal a fundamental link between the formation of the high-quality resonances and peculiarities of the Fano parameter in the scattering cross-section spectra. Our theoretical findings are confirmed by microwave experiments for the scattering of a high-index cylindrical resonators with a tunable aspect ratio. The proposed mechanism of the strong mode coupling in single subwavelength high-index resonators accompanied by resonances with high quality factor helps to extend substantially functionalities of all-dielectric nanophotonics that opens new horizons for active and passive nanoscale metadevices.

We found that R-parity breaking term λνH_u H_d leads to an additional F-type contribution to the Higgs scalar potential, and thus to the masses of supersymmetric Higgs bosons. The most interesting consequence is the modification of the tree-level expression for the lightest neutral supersymmetric Higgs boson mass. It appears that due to this contribution the bound on the lightest Higgs mass may be shifted upwards, thus slightly opening the part of the model parameter space excluded by non-observation of the light Higgs boson at LEP in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

The mass degeneracy of higgsino-like chargino and two higgsino-like neutralinos is the necessary condition for a long lifetime. It requires the fine-tuning of parameters, but being a single additional constraint in the whole parameter space it can be fulfilled in the Constrained MSSM along the border line where radiative electroweak symmetry breaking fails. In a narrow band close to the border line the charginos are long-lived particles. The event selection trigger uses a very clear signature of the process (4 jets + 4 muons + up to 4 secondary vertices topology) when final decay products of each gluino are b-anti-b and muon-anti-muon pairs and the lightest SUSY particle, the neutralino. Rather high transverse missing energy carried away by two neutralinos is an essential signature of the event and also allows the relevant Standard Model background to be reduced significantly. Elsaesser and Mannheim fit a contribution of Dark Matter Annihilation (DMA) to the extragalactic contribution of the galactic diffuse gamma ray flux, as deduced from the EGRET data by Strong, Moskalenko and Reimer. They find a WIMP mass of 515{+110}{-75} GeV and quote a systematic error of 30\%. However, they do not include large systematic uncertainties from the fact that the determination of the extragalactic flux (EGF) requires a model for the subtraction of the Galactic flux from the data. The data used were obtained with a model without Galactic DM, so one expects additional uncertainty in the region where DMA contributes. Including a Galactic DMA contribution reduces the significance and the WIMP mass. The latter then becomes compatible with the Galactic excess of diffuse gamma rays, which posseses all the properties of DMA with a much higher significance than the extragalactic excess.

Recently, two new constraints became available, both from astrophysics: WMAP precise measurement of the amount of the Dark Matter in the Universe and EGRET data on an excess in diffuse gamma ray flux. Being interpreted as a manifestation of supersymmetry these data lead to severe constraints on parameter space and single out a very restricted area. The key feature of this area is the splitting of light gauginos from heavy squarks and sleptons. We study the phenomenological properties of this scenario, in particular, the cross-sections of superparticle production, their decay patterns and signatures for observation at hadron colliders, Tevatron and LHC. We found that weakly interacting particles in this area are very light so that the cross-sections may reach fractions of a pb with jets and/or leptons as final states accompanied by missing energy taken away by light neutralino with a mass around 100 GeV.

The public data from the EGRET space telescope on diffuse Galactic gamma rays in the energy range from 0.1 to 10 GeV are reanalyzed with the purpose of searching for signals of Dark Matter annihilation (DMA). The analysis confirms the previously observed excess for energies above 1 GeV in comparison with the expectations from conventional Galactic models. In addition, the excess was found to show all the key features of a signal from Dark Matter Annihilation (DMA): a) the excess is observable in all sky directions and has the same shape everywhere, thus pointing to a common source; b) the shape corresponds to the expected spectrum of the annihilation of non-relativistic massive particles into - among others - neutral $π^0$ mesons, which decay into photons. From the energy spectrum of the excess we deduce a WIMP mass between 50 and 100 GeV, while from the intensity of the excess in all sky directions the shape of the halo could be reconstructed. The DM halo is consistent with an almost spherical isothermal profile with substructure in the Galactic plane in the form of toroidal rings at 4 and 14 kpc from the center. These rings lead to a peculiar shape of the rotation curve, in agreement with the data, which proves that the EGRET excess traces the Dark Matter.

The diffuse galactic EGRET gamma ray data show a clear excess for energies above 1 GeV in comparison with the expectations from conventional galactic models. The excess is seen with the same spectrum in all sky directions, as expected for Dark Matter (DM) annihilation. This hypothesis is investigated in detail. The energy spectrum of the excess is used to limit the WIMP mass to the 50-100 GeV range, while the sky maps are used to determine the halo structure, which is consistent with a triaxial isothermal halo with additional enhancement of Dark Matter in the disc. The latter is strongly correlated with the ring of stars around our galaxy at a distance of 14 kpc, thought to originate from the tidal disruption of a dwarf galaxy. It is shown that this ring of DM with a mass of $\approx 2\cdot 10^{11} M_\odot$ causes the mysterious change of slope in the rotation curve at $R=1.1R_0$ and the large local surface density of the disc. The total mass of the halo is determined to be $3\cdot 10^{12} M_\odot$. A cuspy profile is definitely excluded to describe the gamma ray data. These signals of Dark Matter Annihilation are compatible with Supersymmetry for boost factors of 20 upwards and have a statistical significance of more than $10σ$ in comparison with the conventional galactic model. The latter combined with all features mentioned above provides an intriguing hint that the EGRET excess is indeed a signal from Dark Matter Annihilation.

New NLO b->sgamma calculations have become available using resummed radiative corrections. Using these calculations we perform a global fit of the supergravity inspired constrained minimal supersymmetric model (CMSSM). We find that the resummed calculations show similar constraints as the LO calculations, namely that only with a relatively heavy supersymmetric mass spectrum of the order of 1 TeV the b-τYukawa unification and the b->sgamma rate can coexist in the large tanb scenario. The resummed b->sgamma calculations are found to reduce the renormalization scale uncertainty considerably. The low tanb scenario is excluded by the present Higgs limits from LEP II. The constraint from the Higgs limit in the $m_0,m_{1/2}$ plane is severe, if the trilinear coupling A_0 at the GUT scale is fixed to zero, but is considerably reduced for $A_0\le -2m_0$. The relatively heavy SUSY spectrum required by \besg corresponds to a Higgs mass of $m_h=119\pm 1~ (stop masses)}\pm 2~(theory)~\pm~3 (top mass) GeV $ in the CMSSM.

New NLO b->sgamma calculations have become available. We observe that at large tanbeta the dominant NLO term of the chargino amplitude, which is proportional to mu.tanbeta^2, changes the sign of this amplitude in a large region of the CMSSM parameter space, so that the preferred sign of the Higgs mixing parameter mu now agrees with the preferred sign of b-tau unification. We find that the b->sgamma rate does not constrain the CMSSM anymore, if the higher order contributions and its uncertainties from the incomplete calculations are taken into account.
The Higgs boson mass in the CMSSM is found to be between 110 and 120 GeV for a top mass of 175 GeV, if the Higgs mass limit of 107.9 GeV from LEP, which implies tanbeta>3.3, is taken into account The mean Higgs boson mass value and its dominant errors are: m_h=115\pm 3(stop mass) \pm 1.5(stop mixing) \pm 2(theory) \pm 5(top mass) GeV. This Higgs mass range is valid for all tanbeta values above 20 and decreases for lower tanbeta. If the presently claimed evidence for dark matter by the DAMA Collaboration is interpreted as the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP) of the CMSSM, then it is at the edge of the parameter space allowed by the present Higgs limit of 107.9 GeV from LEP.

Here we concentrate on the most promising, from our point of view, model describing HERA anomaly. We update our previous analysis and take into account new HERA statistics of the 1997 year. HERA events are considered within the R-parity broken SUSY model for a specific scenario with several non-zero couplings. R-parity broken SUSY with several non-zero couplings could explain both high $Q^2 e^+ + jets$ and $μ^+ + jets$ observed at HERA. The consequence of such a particular scenario is the excess of high $Q^2$ di- or tri-jet events at HERA. The relation of this scenario for LEP and TEVATRON colliders is considered. This study shows that if a squark resonance does take place at HERA, supersymmetry with broken R-parity can be revealed at either LEP200 or TEVATRON in the near future.

We find that for the low tan(beta) scenario only one sign of the Higgs mixing parameter is allowed, while the high tan(beta scenario is practically excluded, if one requires all sparticles to be below 1 TeV and imposes radiative electroweak symmetry breaking as well as gauge and Yukawa coupling unification. For squarks between 1 and 2 TeV high tan(beta) scenarios are allowed. We consider especially a new high tan(beta)=64 scenario with triple unification of all Yukawa couplings of the third generation, which show an infrared fixed point behaviour.
The upper limit on the mass of the lightest Higgs in the low (high) tan(beta) scenarios is 97+-6~(120+-2) GeV, where the errors originate predominantly from the uncertainty in the top mass.

Within the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) the Higgs masses and LEP II production cross sections are calculated for a wide range of the parameter space. In addition, the parameter space restricted by unification, electroweak symmetry breaking and other low energy constraints is considered in detail, in which case the masses of all SUSY partners can be estimated, so that their contributions to the radiative corrections can be calculated. Explicit analytical formulae for these contribution are derived.
The radiative corrections from the Yukawa couplings of the third generation are found to dominate over the contributions from charginos and neutralinos.
Large Higgs mass uncertainties are due to the top mass uncertainty and the unknown sign of the Higgs mixing parameter. For the low tanb scenario the mass of the lightest Higgs is found to be below 103 GeV for a top mass below 190 GeV. The cross section at a LEP energy of 192 GeV is sufficient to find or exclude this low tanb scenario for a top mass below 180 GeV. For the high tanb scenario only a small fraction of the parameter space can be covered, since the Higgs mass is predicted between 105 and 125 GeV in most cases. At the theoretically possible LEP II energy of 205 GeV part of the parameter space for the large tanb scenario would be accessible.

In the context of the standard SUSY GUT scenario, we present a detailed analysis of the softly broken finite supersymmetric grand unified theory. The model, albeit non-minimal, remains very rigid due to the requirement of finiteness. It is based on the $SU(5)$ gauge group and is UV finite to all orders of perturbation theory. It contains three generations of the matter fields together with four pairs of Higgses. The requirement of UV finiteness fixes all the Yukawa couplings at the GUT scale. Imposing the condition of universality on the soft couplings at the Planck scale and then extending the condition of finiteness to them, one gets a completely finite unified theory above $M_{GUT}.$ This makes the fine-tuning procedure more meaningful and leads to the usual Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model below $M_{GUT}$. All the masses of the ordinary particles including Higgses are obtained due to the Higgs mechanism at the electro-weak scale. The hierarchy of quark and lepton masses is related to that of v.e.v.'s of the Higgs fields and is governed by the Higgs mixing matrix in the generation space. Superpartners develop their masses according to the RG equations starting from the soft terms at the Planck scale. The suggestion of complete finiteness and maximal simplicity of the unified theory leads to the connection between the initial values of soft SUSY breaking parameters, namely $m_0^2=1/3m_{1/2}^2,\ A_t=A_b=A_τ=-m_{1/2}, \ B=-m_{1/2}$, so that the number of free parameters is less than that of the MSSM.

The one-loop radiative corrections to the Higgs boson potential in the MSSM, originating from the top quark and squark loops, are summed in the leading log approximation using the renormalization group. The RG improved effective potential is minimized and the corrections to the CP-odd and CP-even Higgs boson masses are calculated. The resulting masses exhibit smoother top mass dependence than those calculated without RG summation. We have also found that for preferable values of the top mass the light Higgs mass does not exceed 100 GeV.
