Polarized fusion has long ago be proposed as a method to strongly increase the efficiency of fusion reactors. However, the required nuclear spin-polarization conservation in fusion plasmas has never been proven experimentally. Here we report on first experimental data suggesting an increased ion flux from a polarized $^3\mkern-1mu$He target heated by a PW laser pulse as well as evidence for an almost complete persistence of their nuclear-polarization after acceleration to MeV energies. These findings also validate the concept of using pre-polarized targets for plasma acceleration of polarized beams.

A laser-driven spin-polarized 3He2+ beam source for nuclear-physics experiments and for the investigation of polarized nuclear fusion demands a high-density polarized 3He gas-jet target. Such a target requires a magnetic system providing a permanent homogeneous holding field for the nuclear spins plus a set of coils for adjusting the orientation of the polarization. Starting from a transport vessel at a maximum pressure of 3 bar, the helium gas is compressed for a short time and can be injected into a laser-interaction chamber through a non-magnetic opening valve and nozzle, thus forming jets with densities of about a few 10^19 cm-3 and widths of about 1 mm. The target comprises a 3D adjustment system for precise positioning of the jet relative to the laser focus. An auxiliary gas system provides remote target operation and flushing of the gas lines with Ar gas, which helps to reduce polarization losses. The design of the target, its operation procedures and first experimental results are presented.

We measured the surface tension of linear alkylbenzene (LAB) HYBLENE 113 mixed with Diphenyloxazole (PPO) as well as of pure LAB HYBLENE 113 as part of material studies for the liquid-scintillator based surround background tagger (SBT) in the proposed SHiP experiment. Abstract:
A new method to determine the spin tune is described and tested. In an ideal planar magnetic ring, the spin tune - defined as the number of spin precessions per turn - is given by $ν_s = γG$ (gamma is the Lorentz factor, $G$ the magnetic anomaly). For 970 MeV/c deuterons coherently precessing with a frequency of ~120 kHz in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY, the spin tune is deduced from the up-down asy…

A new method to determine the spin tune is described and tested. In an ideal planar magnetic ring, the spin tune - defined as the number of spin precessions per turn - is given by $ν_s = γG$ (gamma is the Lorentz factor, $G$ the magnetic anomaly). For 970 MeV/c deuterons coherently precessing with a frequency of ~120 kHz in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY, the spin tune is deduced from the up-down asymmetry of deuteron carbon scattering. In a time interval of 2.6 s, the spin tune was determined with a precision of the order $10^{-8}$, and to $1 \cdot 10^{-10}$ for a continuous 100 s accelerator cycle. This renders the presented method a new precision tool for accelerator physics: controlling the spin motion of particles to high precision is mandatory, in particular, for the measurement of electric dipole moments of charged particles in a storage ring.

We report new measurements of inclusive pion production from frozen-spin HD for polarized photon beams covering the Delta(1232) resonance. These provide data simultaneously on both H and D with nearly complete angular distributions of the spin-difference cross sections entering the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. Recent results from Mainz and Bonn exceed the GDH prediction for the proton by 22 microbarns, suggesting as yet unmeasured high-energy components. Our pi0 data reveal a different angular dependence than assumed in Mainz analyses and integrate to a value that is 18 microbarns lower, suggesting a more rapid convergence. Our results for deuterium are somewhat lower than published data, considerably more precise and generally lower than available calculations.

The formation of hydrogen-like muonium (Mu) has been studied as a function of implantation energy in intrinsic Si, thin films of condensed van der Waals gases (N2, Ne, Ar, Xe), fused and crystalline quartz and sapphire. The formation of hydrogen-like muonium (Mu) has been studied as a function of implantation energy in intrinsic Si, thin films of condensed van der Waals gases (N2, Ne, Ar, Xe), fused and crystalline quartz and sapphire. By varying the initial energy of positive muons (mu+) between 1 and 30 keV the number of electron-hole pairs generated in the ionization track of the mu+ can be tuned between a few and several thousand. The results show the strong suppression of the formation of those Mu states that depend on the availability of excess electrons. This indicates, that the role of H-impurity states in determining electric properties of semiconductors and insulators depends on the way how atomic H is introduced into the material.
