Jackiw Teitelboim (JT) gravity has proven to be an excellent tool for investigating aspects of quantum gravity and black hole physics. In recent years, the study of JT gravity and its deformations has helped us learn about the different contributions of geometries in the gravitational path integral, the quantum gravity Hilbert space, the space-time factorization problem, the role of averaging in holography, the black hole information paradox, and the matrix models. All this motivates the exploration of the JT gravity in different setups, with and without matter. Here, we consider JT gravity conformally coupled to Liouville field theory and matter fields. This model admits to be interpreted as a non-critical string theory on a linear dilaton background with a tachyonic Liouville potential along a null direction. The constant curvature constraint of JT gravity results in a neutralization of the Liouville mode, which makes it possible to compute the four-point correlation function of the theory analytically. Here we give the explicit derivation of the four-point function and briefly comment on its properties, such as monodromy invariance, crossing symmetry, factorization, and limits.

We compute the celestial correlators corresponding to tree-level 5-gluon amplitudes in the type I superstring theory. Since celestial correlation functions are obtained by integrating over the full range of energies, there is no obvious analog of the $α' \to 0$ limit in this basis. This is manifestly shown by a factorization of the $α'$ dependence in the celestial string amplitudes. Consequently, the question arises as to how the field theory limit is recovered from string theory in the celestial basis. This problem has been addressed in the literature for the case of 4-gluon amplitudes at tree level, where the forward scattering limit of the stringy factor was identified as a limit in which celestial Yang-Mills 4-point function is recovered. Here, we extend the analysis to the case with five gluons, for which the string moduli space allows for more types of limits, thus allowing to investigate this aspect in more detail. Based on celestial data only, we study the regime in which one arrives at the correct celestial field theory limit. We also study other properties of the celestial string amplitudes, namely, the conformally soft theorem, effective field theory expansion in the conformal basis, and a map that arises in the regime of high-energy/large-scaling dimension that connects the punctured string worldsheet to the insertion of primary operators in the celestial CFT for the massless $n$-point string amplitude.

We focus on the case where the constant-time slices of the horizon are the Nil geometry, the Thurston geometry associated to the Heisenberg group. For such spaces, we analyze the symmetries both in the asymptotic region and in the near horizon region. We compute the associated conserved charges, which turn out to be finite and admit a sensible physical interpretation. We analyze the thermodynamics of the Nil black hole, and we present a stationary spinning generalization of it in the slowly rotating approximation.

We construct higher-derivative gravity theories in three dimensions that admit holographic $c$-theorems and exhibit a unique maximally symmetric vacuum, at arbitrary order $n$ in the curvature. We show that these theories exhibit special properties, the most salient ones being the decoupling of ghost modes around Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, the enhancement of symmetries at linearized level, and the existence of a one-parameter generalization of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole that, while being asymptotically AdS, is not of constant curvature but rather exhibits a curvature singularity. For such black holes, we provide a holographic derivation of their thermodynamics. This gives a microscopic picture of black hole thermodynamics for non-supersymmetric solutions, of non-constant curvature in higher-derivative theories of arbitrary order in the curvature.

We study the interplay between higher curvature terms and the backreaction of quantum fluctuations in 3-dimensional massive gravity in asymptotically (Anti-)de Sitter space. We focus on the theory at the special point of the parameter space where the two maximally symmetric vacua coincide. In the case of positive cosmological constant, this corresponds to the partially massless point, at which the classical theory admits de Sitter black holes and exhibits an extra conformal symmetry at linear level. We explicitly find the quantum corrected black hole geometry in the semiclassical approximation and show that it induces a relaxation of the standard asymptotic conditions. Nonetheless, the new asymptotic behavior is still preserved by an infinite-dimensional algebra, which, in addition to Virasoro, contains logarithmic supertranslations. Finally, we show that all the results we obtain for the quadratic massive gravity theory can be extended to theories including cubic and quartic terms in the curvature.

We focus our attention on defects that represent geometries with integer angular excesses; these correspond to specific negative values of the BTZ mass. We compare our solutions with other results in the literature, finding exact agreement. We argue that, in the semiclassical limit, the BPS defects can be associated to degenerate representations of the Virasoro symmetry at the boundary. The case of non-diagonal representations, describing stationary, non-static defects, is also discussed.

The images of supermassive black holes captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration have allowed us to have access to the physical processes that occur in the vicinity of the event horizons of these objects. This has enabled us to learn more about the state of rotation of black holes, about the formation of relativistic jets in their vicinity, about the magnetic field in the regions close to them, and even about the existence of the photon ring. Furthermore, black hole imaging gives rise to a new way of testing general relativity in the strong field regime. This has initiated a line of research aimed at probing different physical scenarios. While many scenarios have been proposed in the literature that yield distortion effects that would be a priori detectable at the resolution achieved by future EHT observations, the vast majority of those scenarios involve strange objects or exotic matter content. Here, we consider a less heterodox scenario which, involving non-exotic matter, in the sense that it satisfies all energy conditions and is dynamically stable, also leads to a deformation of the black hole shadow. We consider a specific concentration of non-emitting, relativistic matter of zero optical depth forming a bubble around the black hole. Due to gravitational refraction, such a self-interacting -- dark -- matter concentration may produce sub-annular images, i.e. subleading images inside the photon ring. We calculate the ray tracing in the space-time geometry produced by such a matter configuration and obtain the corresponding black hole images. While for concreteness we restrict our analysis to a specific matter distribution, modeling the bubble as a thin-shell, effects qualitatively similar to those described here are expected to occur for more general density profiles.

We study the scalar probe in the near-horizon region of near-extremal five-dimensional black holes and the problem of reattaching the asymptotic region. We consider the example of a Myers-Perry black hole with two independent angular momenta, for which the problem can be solved analytically in terms of the Riemann P-symbols and the confluent Heun special function. By prescribing leaking boundary conditions similar to those considered in the context of Kerr/CFT correspondence, we implement the attachment of the asymptotically flat region, matching the solutions in the near-horizon Myers-Perry geometry with those in the far region. This provides us with a set of explicit expressions for the field response in the background of five-dimensional stationary black holes near extremality, which enables us to highlight qualitative differences with the analogous problem in four dimensions.

Here, we verify the vanishing of higher-orders in perturbation theory by explicit computation in the second-order, metric formulation at 3-loops. The number of 1-particle irreducible Feynman diagrams involving both gravitons and ghosts turns out to be 17. Using dimensional regularization, we solve all the diagrams. At 2-loops, we find that all such diagrams vanish separately after regularization. At 3-loops, in contrast, a series of remarkable cancellations between different diagrams takes place, with 9 diagrams beautifully conspiring to yield a vanishing result. Our techniques are suitable to be applied to higher loops as well as to similar computations in higher dimensions.

We study celestial amplitudes in string theory at one-loop. Celestial amplitudes describe scattering processes of boost eigenstates and relate to amplitudes in the more standard basis of momentum eigenstates through a Mellin transform. They are thus sensitive to both the ultraviolet and the infrared, which raises the question of how to appropriately take the field theory limit of string amplitudes in the celestial basis. We address this problem in the context of four-dimensional genus-one scattering processes of gluons in open string theory which reach the two-dimensional celestial sphere at null infinity. We show that the Mellin transform commutes with the adequate limit in the worldsheet moduli space and reproduces the celestial one-loop field theory amplitude expressed in the worldline formalism. The dependence on $α'$ continues to be a simple overall factor in one-loop celestial amplitudes albeit with a power that is shifted by three units with respect to tree-level, thus making manifest that the dimensionless parameter $g_{10}^2/α'^3$ organizes the loop expansion in the celestial basis.

In many cases, the near-horizon geometry encodes sufficient information to compute conserved charges of a gravitational solution, including thermodynamic quantities. These charges are Noether charges associated to asymptotic isometries that preserve appropriate boundary conditions at the future horizon. For isolated, compact horizons these charges turn out to be integrable, conserved and finite, and they have been studied in many examples of interest, notably in 3+1 dimensions. In higher dimensions, where the variety of horizon structures is more diverse, it is still possible to apply the same method, although explicit examples have so far been limited to simple topologies. In this paper, we demonstrate that such computations can also be applied to higher-dimensional solutions with event horizons whose spacelike cross sections exhibit non-trivial topology. We provide several explicit examples, with particular focus on the 5-dimensional black ring.

This has been proven by Erbin, Maldacena and Skliros in [JHEP 07 (2019) 139] by two methods. Here, we provide an alternative proof of this result. Our method consists in considering a timelike Liouville direction as a regularization parameter, which suffices to break time translation invariance and, at the same time, to stabilize the residual conformal symmetry in the worldsheet. This allows taking a limit and restoring Poincare symmetry in a controlled way, thus reproducing the correct expression of the two-point amplitude.

When approaching extremality, rotating black holes tend to expel the magnetic field in which they are immersed. This phenomenon, being reminiscent of the Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect in superconductors, is known as the black hole Meissner effect, and here we study it in the backreacting regime and from the near horizon perspective. By resorting to methods recently developed in the literature, which allow to compute conserved charges in the near horizon region, regardless the details of the asymptotia at large distance, we investigate the properties of the black hole horizon when in its Meissner state. We show that, when in such state, the horizon exhibits two sets of supertranslation symmetries as well as a symmetry generated by the local conformal group. The supertranslations are generated by two infinite sets of currents, one of which comes from local dilations of the advanced null coordinate at the horizon, and the other from local gauge transformations that preserve the electromagnetic field configuration at the horizon. We show that the evaluation of the conserved charges associated to these symmetries correctly reproduce the physical charges of the magnetized black holes and their thermodynamics. This represents a concrete application of the techniques developed in [1,2,3] and it extends the results of [4] to arbitrary values of the black hole charges. In addition, we elaborate on the charges computation at the horizon: we show the equivalence between the horizon charges and the evaluation of the corresponding Komar integrals. Besides, we show the validity of the Gauss phenomenon by explicitly relating near horizon charges with fluxes and charges computed by other techniques. All this provides a method to derive the thermodynamics of magnetized horizons in a quite succinct way, including the case of horizons exhibiting the Meissner effect.

WAdS/WCFT correspondence is an interesting realization of non-AdS holography. It relates 3-dimensional Warped-Anti-de Sitter (WAdS$_3$) spaces to a special class of 2-dimensional quantum field theory with chiral scaling symmetry that acts only on right-moving modes. The latter are often called Warped Conformal Field Theories (WCFT$_2$), and their existence makes WAdS/WCFT particularly interesting as a tool to investigate a new type of 2-dimensional conformal structure. Besides, WAdS/WCFT is interesting because it enables to apply holographic techniques to the microstate counting problem of non-AdS, non-supersymmetric black holes. Asymptotically WAdS$_3$ black holes (WBH$_3$) appear as solutions of topologically massive theories, Chern-Simons theories, and many other models. Here, we explore WBH$_3\times Σ_{D-3}$ solutions of $D$-dimensional higher-curvature gravity, with $Σ_{D-3}$ being different internal manifolds, typically given by products of deformations of hyperbolic spaces, although we also consider warped products with time-dependent deformations. These geometries are solutions of the second order higher-curvature theory at special (critical) points of the parameter space, where the theory exhibits a sort of degeneracy. We argue that the dual (W)CFT at those points is actually trivial. In many respects, these critical points of WAdS$_3 \times Σ_{D-3}$ vacua are the squashed/stretched analogs of the AdS$_D$ Chern-Simons point of Lovelock gravity.

We consider the low-energy effective action of string theory at order $α'$, including $R^2$-corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert gravitational action and non-trivial dilaton coupling. By means of a convenient field redefinition, we manage to express the theory in a frame that enables us to solve its field equations analytically and perturbatively in $α' $ for a static spherically symmetric ansatz in an arbitrary number of dimensions. The set of solutions we obtain is compatible with asymptotically flat geometries exhibiting a regular event horizon at which the dilaton is well-behaved. For the 4-dimensional case, we also derive the stationary black hole configuration at first order in $α'$ and in the slowly rotating approximation. This yields string theory modifications to the Kerr geometry, including terms of the form $a$, $a^2$, $α'$ and $aα'$. In addition, we obtain the first $α'$ correction to the C-metrics, which accommodates accelerating black holes. We work in the string frame and discuss the connection to the Einstein frame, for which rotating black holes have already been obtained in the literature.

We study extremal surfaces in a traversable wormhole geometry that connects two locally AdS$_5$ asymptotic regions. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we use these to compute the holographic entanglement entropy for different configurations: First, we consider an extremal surface anchored at the boundary on a spatial $2$-sphere of radius $R$. The other scenario is a slab configuration which extends in two of the boundary spacelike directions while having a finite size $L$ in the third one. We show that in both cases the divergent and the finite pieces of the holographic entanglement entropy give results consistent with the holographic picture and this is used to explore the phase transitions that the dual theory undergoes. The geometries we consider here are stable thin-shell wormholes with flat codimension-one hypersurfaces at fixed radial coordinate. They appear as electrovacuum solutions of higher-curvature gravity theories coupled to Abelian gauge fields. The presence of the thin-shells produces a refraction of the extremal surfaces in the bulk, leading to the presence of cusps in the phase space diagram. Further, the traversable wormhole captures a phase transition for the subsystems made up of a union of disconnected regions in different boundaries. We discuss these and other features of the phase diagram.

We present a direct computation of the three-point function, the simplest to the best of our knowledge, and give expressions for the $N$-point functions in terms of integrated Liouville theory correlators. This leads us to discuss the relation to the $H^+_3$ WZW-Liouville correspondence, especially in the case in which spectral flow is taken into account. We explain how these results can be used to study scattering amplitudes of winding string states in AdS$_3$.

We study static black hole solutions with locally spherical horizons coupled to non-Abelian field in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Chern-Simons AdS$_5$ supergravity. They are governed by three parameters associated to the mass, axial torsion and amplitude of the internal soliton, and two ones to the gravitational hair. They describe geometries that can be a global AdS space, naked singularity or a (non-)extremal black hole. We analyze physical properties of two inequivalent asymptotically AdS solutions when the spatial section at radial infinity is either a 3-sphere or a projective 3-space. An important feature of these 3-parametric solutions is that they possess a topological structure including two $SU(2)$ solitons that wind nontrivially around the black hole horizon, as characterized by the Pontryagin index. In the extremal black hole limit, the solitons' strengths match and a soliton-antisoliton system unwinds. That limit admits both non-BPS and BPS configurations. For the latter, the pure gauge and non-pure gauge solutions preserve $1/2$ and $1/16$ of the original supersymmetries, respectively. In a general case, we compute conserved charges in Hamiltonian formalism, finding many similarities with standard supergravity black holes.

However, the determination of the mass of such black holes remained unclear as many different results were reported in the literature presenting discrepancies. Here, by using a robust method that permits to tackle the problem in the strong field regime, we determine the correct mass of the Lifshitz black hole of the higher-derivative massive gravity and compare it with other results obtained by different methods. Positivity of the mass spectrum demands an odd normalization of the gravity action. In spite of this fact, the result turns out to be consistent with computations inspired in holography.

We study non-Einstein Bach-flat gravitational instanton solutions that can be regarded as the generalization of the Taub-NUT/Bolt and Eguchi-Hanson solutions of Einstein gravity to conformal gravity. These solutions include non-Einstein spaces which are either asymptotically locally flat spacetimes (ALF) or asymptotically locally Anti-de Sitter (AlAdS). Nevertheless, solutions with different asymptotic conditions exist: we find geometries that present a weakened AlAdS asymptotia, exhibiting the typical low decaying mode of conformal gravity. This permits to identify the simple Neumann boundary condition that, as it happens in the asymptotically AdS sector, selects the Einstein solution out of the solutions of conformal gravity. All the geometries present non-vanishing Hirzebruch signature and Euler characteristic, being single-centered instantons. We compute the topological charges as well as the Noether charges of the Taub-NUT/Bolt and Eguchi-Hanson spacetimes, which happen to be finite. This enables us to study the thermodynamic properties of these geometries.

We study stationary black holes in the presence of an external strong magnetic field. In the case where the gravitational backreaction of the magnetic field is taken into account, such an scenario is well described by the Ernst-Wild solution to Einstein-Maxwell field equations, representing a charged, stationary black hole immersed in a Melvin magnetic universe. This solution, however, describes a physical situation only in the region close to the black hole. This is due to the following two reasons: Firstly, Melvin spacetime is not asymptotically locally flat; secondly, the non-static Ernst-Wild solution is not even asymptotically Melvin due to the infinite extension of its ergoregion. All this might seem to be an obstruction to address an scenario like this; for instance, it seems to be an obstruction to compute conserved charges as this usually requires a clear notion of asymptotia. Here, we circumvent this obstruction by providing a method to compute the conserved charges of such a black hole by restricting the analysis to the near horizon region. We compute the Wald entropy, the mass, the electric charge, and the angular momentum of stationary black holes in highly magnetized environments from the horizon perspective, finding results in complete agreement with other formalisms.

These solutions realize a variety of physical processes, from the decay of a cosmic string by a black hole pair nucleation to the creation of a black hole pair by an external electromagnetic field. Here, we show that such geometries exhibit an infinite set of symmetries in their near horizon region, generalizing in this way previous results for smooth isolated horizons. By considering the limit close to both the black hole and the acceleration horizons, we show that a sensible set of asymptotic boundary conditions gets preserved by supertranslation and superrotation transformations. By acting on the geometry with such transformations, we derive the superrotated, supertranslated version of the $C$-metric and compute the associated conserved charges.

This consists of deforming the worldsheet action, namely the action of the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ WZW model, by adding to it the operator $J^-\bar{J}^-$, constructed with two Kac-Moody currents. The geometrical interpretation of the resulting theory is that of strings on a conformally flat background that interpolates between AdS$_3$ in the IR and a flat linear dilaton spacetime with Hagedorn spectrum in the UV, having passed through a transition region of positive curvature. Here, we study the properties of this string background both from the point of view of the low-energy effective theory and of the worldsheet CFT. We first study the geometrical properties of the semiclassical geometry, then we revise the computation of correlation functions and of the spectrum of the $J^-\bar{J}^-$-deformed worldsheet theory, and finally we discuss how to extend this type of current-current deformation to other conformal models.

I revisit the calculation of infinite-dimensional symmetries that emerge in the vicinity of isolated horizons. I focus the attention on extremal black holes, for which the isometry algebra that preserves a sensible set of asymptotic boundary conditions at the horizon strictly includes the BMS algebra. The conserved charges that correspond to this BMS sector, however, reduce to those of superrotation, generating only two copies of Witt algebra. For more general horizon isometries, in contrast, the charge algebra does include both Witt and supertranslations, being similar to BMS but s.str. differing from it.

The method of topological renormalization in anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity consists in adding to the action a topological term which renders it finite, defining at the same time a well-posed variational problem. Here, we use this prescription to work out the thermodynamics of asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (AlAdS) spacetimes, focusing on the physical properties of the Misner strings of both the Taub-NUT-AdS and Taub-Bolt-AdS solutions. We compute the contribution of the Misner string to the entropy by treating on the same footing the AdS and AlAdS sectors. As topological renormalization is found to correctly account for the physical quantities in the parity preserving sector of the theory, we then investigate the holographic consequences of adding also the Chern-Pontryagin topological invariant to the bulk action; in particular, we discuss the emergence of the parity-odd contribution in the boundary stress tensor.

We study representations of this algebra in the Hilbert space of the CFT, as well as the action of the finite transformations obtained by exponentiating the charges. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we propose a bulk holographic description in semi-classical gravity that reproduces the results obtained from CFT computations. We discuss the implications of our results regarding quantum hairs of asymptotically flat (near-)extremal black holes.

We investigate whether supertranslation symmetry may appear in a scenario that involves black holes in AdS space. The framework we consider is massive 3D gravity, which admits a rich black hole phase space, including stationary AdS black holes with softly decaying hair. We consider a set of asymptotic conditions that permits such decaying near the boundary, and which, in addition to the local conformal symmetry, is preserved by an extra local current. The corresponding algebra of diffeomorphisms consists of two copies of Virasoro algebra in semi-direct sum with an infinite-dimensional Abelian ideal. We then reorient the analysis to the near horizon region, where infinite-dimensional symmetries also appear. The supertranslation symmetry at the horizon yields an infinite set of non-trivial charges, which we explicitly compute. The zero-mode of these charges correctly reproduces the black hole entropy. In contrast to Einstein gravity, in the higher-derivative theory subleading terms in the near horizon expansion contribute to the near horizon charges. Such terms happen to capture the higher-curvature corrections to the Bekenstein area law.

We consider string probes in a traversable wormhole geometry that connects two locally AdS$_5$ asymptotic regions. Holographically, this describes two interacting copies of a 4-dimensional gauge theory. We consider string configurations whose endpoints are located either in the same boundary or in the two different boundaries of the wormhole. A string with both endpoints in the same boundary is dual to a quark-antiquark pair charged under the same gauge field, while a string extending through the wormhole describes a pair of colored particles charged under two different gauge fields. When one considers a quark-antiquark pair in each boundary, the system undergoes a phase transition: While for small separation each pair of charges exhibits Coulomb interaction, for large separation the charges in different field theories pair up. This behavior had previously been observed in other geometric realizations such as locally AdS$_5$ wormhole solutions with hyperbolic throats. The geometries we consider here, in contrast, are stable thin-shell wormholes with flat codimension-one hypersurfaces at fixed radial coordinate. They appear as electrovacuum solutions of higher-curvature gravity theories coupled to Abelian gauge fields. The presence of the thin-shells produces a refraction of the string configurations in the bulk, leading to the presence of cusps in the phase space diagram. We discuss these and other features of the phase diagram, including the analogies and difference with other wormhole solutions considered in related contexts.

Holography relates the quasinormal modes frequencies of AdS black holes to the pole structure of the dual field theory propagator. These modes thus provide the timescale for the approach to thermal equilibrium in the CFT. Here, we study how such pole structure and, in particular, the time to equilibrium can get modified in the presence of a black hole hair. More precisely, we consider in AdS a set of relaxed boundary conditions that allow for a low decaying graviton mode near the boundary, which triggers an additional degree of freedom. We solve the scalar field response on such background analytically and non-perturbatively in the hair parameter, and we obtain how the pole structure gets affected by the presence of a black hole hair, relative to that of the usual AdS black hole geometry. The setup we consider is a massive 3D gravity theory, which admits a one-parameter family deformation of BTZ solution and enables us to solve the problem analytically. The theory also admits an AdS$_3$ soliton which gives a family of vacua that can be constructed from the hairy black hole by means of a double Wick rotation. The spectrum of normal modes on the latter geometry can also be solved analytically; we study its properties in relation to those of the AdS$_3$ vacuum.

From the worldsheet perspective, this corresponds to a marginal deformation of the $σ$-model on AdS$_3$ that yields a string background that interpolates between AdS$_3$ and a flat linear dilaton solution. Here, with the intention of studying this worldsheet CFT further, we consider it in the presence of a boundary. In a previous paper, we computed different correlation functions of this theory on the disk, including the bulk 1-point function, the boundary-boundary 2-point function, and the bulk-boundary 2-point function. This led us to compute the anomalous dimension of both bulk and boundary vertex operators, which first required a proper regularization of the ultraviolet divergences of the conformal integrals. Here, we extend the analysis by computing the bulk-bulk 2-point function on the disk and other observables on the sphere. We prove that the renormalization of the vertex operators proposed in our previous works is consistent with the form of the sphere $N$-point functions.

The insertion of the spectral flow operator in a string scattering amplitude on AdS$_3\times \mathcal{N}$ produces a change in the winding number of one of the incoming (or outgoing) states, making it possible to compute amplitudes of processes in which winding number in AdS$_3$ is not conserved. The insertion of such operator, however, might seem artificial from the worldsheet theory perspective, as it appears as an unintegrated vertex operator of conformal dimension zero that does not represent any normalizable state. Here, we show that the spectral flow operator naturally emerges in the Liouville field theory description of the WZW correlation functions once it is combined with a series of duality relations among conformal integrals. By considering multiple insertions of spectral flow operators, we study the dependence on the moduli for arbitrary number of them, and we show explicitly that the amplitude does not depend on the specific locations of the accessory insertions in the worldsheet, as required by consistency. This generalizes previous computations in which particular cases were considered. This can also be thought of as an alternative proof of the WZW-Liouville correspondence in the case of maximally winding violating correlators.

In general relativity, traversable wormholes are possible provided they do not represent shortcuts in the spacetime. Einstein equations, together with the achronal averaged null energy condition, demand to take longer for an observer to go through the wormhole than through the ambient space. This forbids wormholes connecting two distant regions in the space. The situation is different when higher-curvature corrections are considered. Here, we construct a traversable wormhole solution connecting two asymptotically flat regions, otherwise disconnected. This geometry is an electro-vacuum solution to Lovelock theory of gravity coupled to an Abelian gauge field. The electric flux suffices to support the wormhole throat and to stabilize the solution. In fact, we show that, in contrast to other wormhole solutions previously found in this theory, the one constructed here turns out to be stable under scalar perturbations. We also consider wormholes in AdS. We present a protection argument showing that, while stable traversable wormholes connecting two asymptotically locally AdS$_5$ spaces do exist in the higher-curvature theory, the region of the parameter space where such solutions are admitted lies outside the causality bounds coming from AdS/CFT.

It has recently been shown that, in the vicinity of their event horizons, black holes exhibit an infinite-dimensional symmetry. This symmetry captures relevant physical information about the black hole, and in particular about its thermodynamics. Here, we show that the same holds in a cosmological setup. More precisely, we show that around the de Sitter cosmological horizon, an infinite set of diffeomorphisms preserving a sensible set of boundary conditions emerges. These boundary conditions are similar to those considered by Price and Thorne in the context of the membrane paradigm, and permit to accommodate interesting gravity solutions. As for other boundary conditions considered previously, they are preserved by an infinite-dimensional asymptotic isometry algebra that includes supertranslations and two copies of the Virasoro algebra. This symmetry has associated a set of Noether charges that turn out to be conserved, finite, and integrable. We derive these charges explicitly using the covariant formalism and analyze their physical meaning by evaluating them to the case of de Sitter space. In this case, the zero-mode of the charge is found to account for the Gibbons-Hawking entropy of the cosmological horizon. We then consider a much more general set of solutions, including asymptotically de-Sitter black holes and asymptotically Taub-NUT-de Sitter black holes.

In a recent paper [arXiv:1806.06254], we explored the space of solutions of the exotic massive 3D gravity theory proposed in [arXiv:1806.04179]. We showed that the theory admits a rich space of vacua, including asymptotically Anti de-Sitter (AdS) geometries obeying different types of boundary conditions. The examples include black holes dressed with low decaying gravitons. Based on what happens in other theories of massive gravity, we conjectured that such geometries appear on a curve of the parameter space (chiral curve) where the exotic massive gravity on AdS with sufficiently strong boundary conditions results dual to a 2D chiral conformal field theory. Here, we show that this expectation is consistent with the conserved charges and thermodynamical properties of the black holes of the theory, which have recently been computed [arXiv:1812.09525]. When the boundary conditions are relaxed relative to the standard Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions, the theory exhibits solutions consistent with the definition of the so-called Log-gravity. The asymptotic behavior of these solutions presents a logarithmic term in the Fefferman-Graham expansion that, nonetheless, is compatible with the AdS asymptotic symmetries. This long range interaction is due to a mode of the massive gravity that becomes massless precisely on the chiral curve. We construct exact solutions exhibiting this behavior, which admit to be interpreted as fully backreacting gravitational waves propagating on an extremal black hole, and carrying non-vanishing gravitational energy. We also discuss other vacua of the theory, such as Warped-AdS$_3$ black holes, gravitational waves on such backgrounds, AdS$_2\times S^1$ spaces, and black holes in dS$_3$ space.

We compute the memory effect produced at the black hole horizon by a transient gravitational shockwave. We compute the memory effect produced at the black hole horizon by a transient gravitational shockwave. As shown by Hawking, Perry, and Strominger (HPS) such a gravitational wave produces a deformation of the black hole geometry which from future null infinity is seen as a Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) supertranslation. This results in a diffeomorphic but physically distinct geometry which differs from the original black hole by their charges at infinity. Here we give the complementary description of this physical process in the near-horizon region as seen by an observer hovering just outside the event horizon. From this perspective, in addition to a supertranslation the shockwave also induces a horizon superrotation. We compute the associated superrotation charge and show that its form agrees with the one obtained by HPS at infinity. In addition, there is a supertranslation contribution to the horizon charge, which measures the entropy change in the process. We then turn to electrically and magnetically charged black holes and generalize the near-horizon asymptotic symmetry analysis to Einstein-Maxwell theory. This reveals an additional infinite-dimensional current algebra that acts non-trivially on the horizon superrotations. Finally, we generalize the black hole memory effect to Reissner-Nordström black holes.

For such models, we explicitly construct a family of black hole solutions with both electric and magnetic charges, and with different horizon topologies. The solutions exhibit some features similar to those of self-gravitating monopoles in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, which we discuss. When higher-curvature corrections are switched off, our solutions reduce to charged $p$-brane solutions previously studied in the literature. Novel qualitative features appear due to the $R^4$ terms, though. Such is the case of the emergence of branch singularities for charged solutions that, nonetheless, can be shielded by the event horizon.

We give a novel definition of gravitational energy for an arbitrary theory of gravity including quadratic-curvature corrections to Einstein equations. We focus on the theory in four dimensions, in presence of negative cosmological constant, and with asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) boundary conditions. As a first example, we compute the gravitational energy and angular momentum of Schwarzschild-AdS black holes, for which we obtain results consistent with previous computations performed using different methods. However, our method differs qualitatively from other ones in the feature of being intrinsically non-linear. It relies on the idea of adding to the gravity action topological invariant terms which suffice to regularize the Noether charges and render the variational problem well-posed. This is an idea that has been previously considered in the case of second-order theories, such as general relativity and which, as shown here, extends to higher-derivative theories. Besides black holes, we consider other solutions, such as gravitational waves in AdS, for which we also find results in agreement. This enables us to investigate the consistency of this approach in the non-Einstein sector of the theory.

We continue the study of a recently proposed solvable irrelevant deformation of an AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence that leads in the UV to a theory with Hagedorn spectrum. This can be thought of as a single trace analog of the $T\bar{T}$-deformation of the dual CFT$_2$. Here we focus on the deformed worldsheet theory in presence of a conformal boundary. First, we compute the expectation value of a bulk primary operator on the disc geometry. We give a closed expression for such observable, from which we obtain the anomalous conformal dimension induced by the deformation. We compare the result with that coming from the computation of the 2-point correlation function on the sphere, finding exact agreement. We perform the computation using different techniques and making a comparative analysis of different regularization schemes to solve the logarithmically divergent integrals. This enables us to perform further consistency checks of our result by computing other observables of the deformed theory: We compute both the bulk-boundary 2-point and the boundary-boundary 2-point functions and are able to reproduce the anomalous dimensions of both boundary and bulk operators.

We show that this theory has a rich space of vacua, including asymptotically Anti de-Sitter (AdS) geometries obeying either the standard Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions or the weakened asymptotic behavior of the so-called Log-gravity. Both sectors contain non-Einstein spaces with $SO(2)\times \mathbb{R}$ isometry group, showing that the Birkhoff theorem does not hold all over the parameter space, even if strong AdS boundary conditions are imposed. Some of these geometries correspond to 3D black holes dressed with a Log-gravity graviton. We conjecture that such geometries appear in a curve of the parameter space where the exotic 3D massive gravity on AdS$_3$ is dual to a chiral conformal field theory. The theory also contains other interesting vacua, including different families of non-AdS black holes.
