Near- to mid-Infrared observations (from Spitzer and JWST) have revealed a hidden population of galaxies at redshift z=3-6, called optically-dark objects, which are believed to be massive and dusty star-formers. While optically-dark sources are widely recognized as a significant component of the stellar mass function, the history of their stellar mass assembly remains unexplored. However, they are thought to be the progenitors of the more massive early-type galaxies found in present-day groups and clusters. It is thus important to examine the possible connection between dark sources and merging events, in order to understand the environment in which they live. Here, we report our search for close companions in a sample of 19 optically-dark objects identified in the SMACS0723 JWST deep field. They were selected in the NIRCam F444W band and undetected below 2mu. We restrict our analysis to the reddest (i.e. F277W-F444W> 1.3) and brightest (F444W< 26 mag) objects. We have identified an optically-dark source showing a very close companion (<0.5"). The spatially resolved SED fitting procedure indicates that all components lying within 1.5" from the dark source are indeed at z~5.7. Tidal features (leading to a whale shaped morphology) corroborate the hypothesis that the dark source is the most massive (log(M/Msun)>10.3) and dusty (Av~3 at the core) system of an ongoing merger with a mass ratio of ~10. Similar merging systems are identified in the SERRA simulations, allowing us to reconstruct their stellar mass assembly history and predict their molecular gas properties The discovery of mergers within dark galaxies at the end of the Epoch of Reionization underscores the importance of conducting a statistical search for additional candidates in deep NIRCam fields. Such research will aid in understanding the role of merging processes during the obscured phase of stellar mass accumulation.

Critical non-linearity for some evolution equations with Fujita-type critical exponent

Abstract:
We consider the Cauchy problem for a class of non-linear evolution equations in the form \[L(\partial_t,\partial_x) u=F(\partial_t^\ell u), \quad (t,x)\in [0,\infty)\times \mathbb{R}^n;\] here, $L(\partial_t,\partial_x)$ is a linear partial differential operator with constant coefficients, of order $m\geq 1$ with respect to the time variable $t$, and $\ell$ is a natural number satisfying…

We consider the Cauchy problem for a class of non-linear evolution equations in the form \[L(\partial_t,\partial_x) u=F(\partial_t^\ell u), \quad (t,x)\in [0,\infty)\times \mathbb{R}^n;\] here, $L(\partial_t,\partial_x)$ is a linear partial differential operator with constant coefficients, of order $m\geq 1$ with respect to the time variable $t$, and $\ell$ is a natural number satisfying $0\leq \ell\leq m-1$. For several different choices of $L$, many authors have investigated the existence of global (in time) solutions to this problem when $F(s)=|s|^p$ is a power non-linearity, looking for a \textit{critical exponent} $p_c>1$ such that global small data solutions exist in the supercritical case $p>p_c$, whereas no global weak solutions exist, under suitable sign assumptions on the data, in the subcritical case $1<p<p_c$. In the present paper we consider a more general non-linear term in the form $F(s)=|s|^pμ(|s|)$; for a large class of models, we provide an integral condition on $μ$ which allows to distinguish more precisely the region of existence of a global (in time) small data solution from that in which the problem admits no global (in time) weak solutions, refining the existing results about the critical exponents for power type non-linearities.

We study a class of weakly hyperbolic Cauchy problems on $\mathbb{R}^d$, involving linear operators with characteristics of variable multiplicities, whose coefficients are unbounded in the space variable. The behaviour in the time variable is governed by a suitable "shape function". We develop a parameter-dependent symbolic calculus, corresponding to an appropriate subdivision of the phase space. By means of such calculus, a parametrix can be constructed, in terms of (generalized) Fourier integral operators naturally associated with the employed symbol class. Further, employing the parametrix, we prove $\mathscr{S}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$-wellposedness and give results about the global decay and regularity of the solution, within a scale of weighted Sobolev space.

Aims. To explore the chemical pattern of early-type stars with planets, searching for a possible signature of planet formation. In particular, we study a likely relation between the lambda Bootis chemical pattern and the presence of giant planets. Methods. We performed a detailed abundance determination in a sample of early-type stars with and without planets via spectral synthesis. Results. We compared the chemical pattern of the stars in our sample (13 stars with planets and 24 stars without detected planets) with those of lambda Bootis and other chemically peculiar stars. We have found four lambda Bootis stars in our sample, two of which present planets and circumstellar disks (HR 8799 and HD 169142) and one without planets detected (HD 110058). We have also identified the first lambda Bootis star orbited by a brown dwarf (zeta Del). This interesting pair lambda Bootis star + brown dwarf could help to test stellar formation scenarios. We found no unique chemical pattern for the group of early-type stars bearing giant planets. However, our results support, in principle, a suggested scenario in which giant planets orbiting pre-main-sequence stars possibly block the dust of the disk and result in a lambda Bootis-like pattern. On the other hand, we do not find a lambda Bootis pattern in different hot-Jupiter planet host stars, which do not support the idea of possible accretion from the winds of hot-Jupiters, recently proposed in the literature. Then, other mechanisms should account for the presence of the lambda Bootis pattern between main-sequence stars. Finally, we suggest that the formation of planets around lambda Bootis stars such as HR 8799 and HD 169142 is also possible through the core accretion process and not only gravitational instability [abridged]

Decay estimates for a Klein-Gordon model with time-periodic coefficients
Authors:

Abstract:
In this paper we consider a Klein-Gordon model with time-dependent periodic coefficients. The aim is to investigate how the presence of the mass term influences energy estimates with respect to the case of vanishing mass, already treated in [18]. The approach is based on a diagonalisation argument for high frequencies and a contradiction argument for bounded frequencies.

In analogy to the chiral-linear multiplet correspondence we establish a relationship between the 3-form (or gaugino condensate) multiplet and a coupled non-minimal (0,1/2) multiplet, illustrated by a simple explicit example.

This report provides a pedagogical introduction to the description of the general Poincare supergravity/matter/Yang-Mills couplings using methods of Kahler superspace geometry.
