Deep learning approaches require collection of data on many different input features or variables for accurate model training and prediction. Since data collection on input features could be costly, it is crucial to reduce the cost by selecting a subset of features and develo** a budget-constrained model (BCM). In this paper, we introduce an approach to eliminating less important features for big data analysis using Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). Once a DNN model has been developed, we identify the weak links and weak neurons, and remove some input features to bring the model cost within a given budget. The experimental results show our approach is feasible and supports user selection of a suitable BCM within a given budget.

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the world in an unprecedented way, causing enormous loss of life. Time and again, public health authorities have urged people to become vaccinated to protect themselves and mitigate the spread of the disease. However, vaccine hesitancy has stalled vaccination levels in the United States. This study explores the effect of vaccine hesitancy on the spread of disease by introducing an SIRS-V$_κ$ model, with compartments of susceptible (S), infected (I), recovered (R), and vaccinated (V). We leverage the concept of carrying capacity to account for vaccine hesitancy by defining a vaccine confidence level $κ$, which is the maximum number of people that will become vaccinated during the course of a disease. The inverse of vaccine confidence is vaccine hesitance, $(\frac{1}κ)$. We explore the equilibria of the SIRS-V$_κ$ model and their stability, and illustrate the impact of vaccine hesitance on epidemic spread analytically and via simulations.

Comet C/2016 R2 (PanSTARRS) has a peculiar volatile composition, with CO being the dominant volatile as opposed to H$_2$O and one of the largest N$_2$/CO ratios ever observed in a comet. Using observations obtained with the \textit{Spitzer Space Telescope}, NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility, the 3.5-meter ARC telescope at Apache Point Observatory, the Discovery Channel Telescope at Lowell Observatory, and the Arizona Radio Observatory 10-m Submillimeter Telescope we quantified the abundances of 12 different species in the coma of R2 PanSTARRS. We confirm the high abundances of CO and N$_2$ and heavy depletions of H$_2$O, HCN, CH$_3$OH, and H$_2$CO compared to CO reported by previous studies. We provide the first measurements (or most sensitive measurements/constraints) on H$_2$O, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, C$_2$H$_6$, OCS, C$_2$H$_2$, and NH$_3$, all of which are depleted relative to CO by at least one to two orders of magnitude compared to values commonly observed in comets. The observed species also show strong enhancements relative to H$_2$O, and even when compared to other species like CH$_4$ or CH$_3$OH most species show deviations from typical comets by at least a factor of two to three. The only mixing ratios found to be close to typical are CH$_3$OH/CO$_2$ and CH$_3$OH/CH$_4$. While R2 PanSTARRS was located at a heliocentric distance of 2.8 AU at the time of our observations in January/February 2018, we argue that this alone cannot account for the peculiar observed composition of this comet and therefore must reflect its intrinsic composition. We discuss possible implications for this clear outlier in compositional studies of comets obtained to date, and encourage future dynamical and chemical modeling in order to better understand what the composition of R2 PanSTARRS tells us about the early Solar System.

Upconversion luminescence was observed from the 3H4 level of Tm3+ under 1586 nm pum** into the 3F4 level. The quadratic dependence of the up-conversion luminescence at 800 nm on the 1800 nm luminescence from the 3F4 level confirms that the 3H4 level is populated by a two photon process. Two possible processes are proposed as mechanisms responsible for the up-conversion: excited state absorption and energy transfer up-conversion. The decay characteristics of the luminescence from the 3H4 level were studied under direct and indirect pum** at 786 and 1586 nm, respectively. By comparing the decay waveforms to the solution of a simple set of rate equations, the energy transfer up-conversion process (3F4, 3F4 ! 3H4, 3H6) was established at Tm2O3 concentrations greater than 200 ppm.

The spectroscopic properties of Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped silica fibers under excitation at 980 nm are reported. Three distinct up-conversion fluorescence bands were observed in the visible to near infra-red regions. The blue and red fluorescence bands at 475 and 650 nm, respectively, were found to originate from the 1G4 level of Tm3+. A three step up-conversion process was established as the populating mechanism for these fluorescence bands. The fluorescence band at 800 nm was found to originate from two possible transitions in Tm3+; one being the transition from the 3H4 to 3H6 manifold which was found to dominate at low pump powers; the other being the transition from the 1G4 to 3H6 level which dominates at higher pump powers. The fluorescence lifetime of the 3H4 and 3F4 levels of Tm3+ and 2F5/2 level of Yb3+ were studied as a function of Yb3+ concentration, with no significant energy back transfer from Tm3+ to Yb3+ observed.

Covariant Energy-Momentum Conservation In General Relativity
Authors:
Philip E. Gibbs
Abstract:
A covariant formula for conserved currents of energy, momentum and angular-momentum is derived from a general form of Noethers theorem applied directly to the Einstein-Hilbert action of classical general relativity. Energy conservation in a closed big-bang cosmology is discussed as a special case. Special care is taken to distinguish between kinematic and dynamic expressions.

String Partons and Multiple Quantisation

Abstract:
I consider an algebraic construction of creation and annihilation operators for superstring and p-brane parton models. The result can be interpreted as a realisation of multiple quantisation and suggests a relationship between quantisation and dimension. The most general algebraic form of quantisation may eventually be expressed in the language of category theory.

The hope is that this may lead to an algebraic formulation of string theory. In the conclusion I speculate that the step** process is a form of quantisation for which the most general form must be sought. By applying the quantisation step a sufficient number (possibly infinite) of times we may construct an algebra which is equivalent to its own quantisation.

Abstract:
It is sometimes said that there may be a unique algebraic theory independent of space-time topologies which underlies superstring and p-brane theories. In this paper, I construct some algebras using knot relations within the framework of event-symmetric string theory, and ask the question "Is string theory in knots?"

This motivates a search for a universal string group for discrete strings in event-symmetric space-time which unifies space-time symmetry with internal gauge symmetry. This is partially successful but the results are incomplete and I speculate on the use of quantum groups to define a well behaved theory which would resolve the discrete/continuum dual nature of stringy space-time.

Abstract:
Open and Closed super-string field theories are constructed in an event-symmetric target space. The partition functions of Statistical and Quantum models are constructed in terms of invariants defined on Lie-algebra representations. An attractive feature of the closed string models is the elegant unification of the space-time symmetries with the gauge symmetries.

In the event symmetric approach to quantum gravity it is assumed that the fundamental laws of physics must be invariant under exchange of any two space-time events. The fact that this symmetry if obviously not observed is attributed to the possibility of a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism in which the residual symmetry is diffeomorphism invariance on a continuum. The approach has a discrete nature while dimensionality, continuity of space-time and causality are abandoned as fundamental principles. Consequently space-time is a dynamical object which may undergo changes of topology or dimension. A number of different types of Event Symmetric model are described. The most interesting models are event symmetric superstring models based on discrete string supergroups.
